Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Congrats fox

Well done all this weekends losers and fasters.

Very indulgent weekend this weekend, definitely in need of today's fast. DD is 3 tomorrow, so there is cake everywhere and I love birthday cake, which is also part of the reason for the mega over calories! Trying desperately not to have any. Wish me luck.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/01/2014 10:52

Morning all.

FD for me today and so far going fine. I had some chewing gum in the car as I am convinced that makes my stomach think I have eaten.

I have been cleaning the kitchen and just tided out my baking cupboard but still no room for TiP so I will have to bake something in a minute.

BoyCat brought a live mouse in. He took it out when I told him too and GirlCat asked to go out once she had clocked it. They both played with it for a while, best bit was when the mouse went towards BoyCat and he backed off Grin. Eventually the mouse died Sad and GirlCat brought it in once - took it out when I shouted at her - and tried to bring it in again so I have locked the cat flap as I have had enough now. Hopefully they will realise and stop bringing in flipping mice.

Just heard noises upstairs and scared myself silly as I thought someone was there. Found nothing other than shoe polish all over my landing carpet courtesy of my 12 year old Angry.

My nerves are shot. Should serve me well for fasting.

Kids having roast chicken, veg and mash for dinner. DH and I are having prawns, rice and spring greens. Hoping that comes in under 500.

Have a good day everyone.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/01/2014 10:56

I just checked and it comes in at 266 calories.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 11:36

Morning all - FD for me too, so far water and one black coffee and my exercise (shred plus other bits) done.

Positively - what sort of exercise/activities do you like when you do feel like it? It sounds like you're asking for a bit of a kick up the butt, so would help to know which direction to aim you for.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 11:50

Grace Some of us know this problem of weekend Frenzies !

3 possible tactics to counteract weekend over-eating sabotaging weight loss:

  1. Build in a calorie allowance by going say 10% below TDEE on the other 3 NFDs. E.g. if your TDEE is 2000, then
  • 3 x NFDs on 1800
  • 2 x weekend NFDs on 2300
  1. Make either Saturday or Sunday a mini-FD (i.e. sub-1000 cals) in addition to your 2 FDs

  2. Make either Saturday or Sunday one of your 500-cal FDs.

FD8 here, just having my lunch of canned soup Blush

Then dinner will be tofu scramble, which I discovered for the first time this weekend (BIG vegan English brekkie)

Congrats Fox Grin

Very interesting to read another thread about portion sizes, and to see some long-time 5:2ers contributions. It's early days but I am quietly hopeful that this WOE is helping appetite on NFDs....

Particularly enjoyed being able to bake peanut butter chocolate cupcakes and enjoy 7 a few guilt free over the weekend Smile

Chin up FDers, we're in it together Wink

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 12:53

Second cup of black coffee and more water. I can't say I like the coffee much but I think its probably better for an FD than starting with tea. Not crying out for my miso yet - could do with some more water I think.

My sainsbos didn't have buttermint tea - got some blackcurrant and vanilla which is OK but I think fruit teas need a tad more sweetness to taste nice. maybe a little bit of splenda will do it.

Dilidali · 27/01/2014 13:09

Ok, I'm trying this today for the first time ever.
So far I had lidl porridge sachetx2 with water and a banana.
For the evening I have two boiled eggs and an oat biscuit/ryvita.
Went for a walk and a swim.

I'm not hungry, but all I think about is food.
A pint of water I think :)

alabasterangel · 27/01/2014 13:19

Saying hello.... First ever FD here. Heard about 5:2 a year ago but dismissed it when my neighbour tried and failed miserably. Since then I've encountered two other colleagues who have had dramatic results (2 and 3 stone respectively). I'm giving it a go, and DH is doing it with me. I desperately want him to loose a bit because he snores and when he's lighter he doesn't.

I'm 5ft 3 and 13.5 stone. Way too heavy. Dress size 18. I've not been smaller than a 14/16 since 22 but I'd much rather be that than this, so I'm aiming small. If I can loose a stone, I'll be thrilled. I lost (thorough illness) 9lb last spring and put it back on over the year. Only 9lb but I felt so much better. I've got loads of clothes which are uncomfy, and i want them to fit. I'm hoping it'll work for me because I'm not very good at total deprivation. I like to food shop, bake, and drink wine. I like the principle that I can do that stuff, but 'tomorrow'.... Not never ever.... Never ever makes me so miserable that I give up before I've started.

I'm trying to split my 500 into a 200 lunch and a 300 supper. Yesterday I made a batch of chunky soup/ casserole which I calculated to be 190 per portion. DH and I had a portion each and one left in the freezer for me later in the week on the next FD (assuming I survive this one!) and I caved for easiness and got us a ready meal each for supper, just for this first day. got plenty of sugar free lime and soda, tea, etc.

Just saying hello.....

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 13:28

Hello Dili and Alabaster!

I desperately want him to loose a bit because he snores and when he's lighter he doesn't.

That's fantastic motivation for you to do it - if it helps him to! Grin

Chunky veg soup sounds like a good place to start. Sometimes people need to experiment to find out what suits them and it tends to get easier once you've done it a few times. Most people find deferring eating for as long as possible to allow a decent meal in the evening works well - but others prefer a good brekkie and then less later. One of the main things to remember is DRINK LOADS - water, herbal teas, tea and coffee - if you like milk put an allowance for the day in a jug. I like Sainsbury's no-sugar lime squash with fizzy water too.

Walking and swimming excellent too!

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 13:29

Just had my miso, and some warm water - seems to go down easier than cold at the moment.

Dilidali · 27/01/2014 13:36

Thank you Errol. I can feel my stomach shrinking Grin.
Aha! Miso soup. Got lots of that! I love it, personally. Sip it whilst it is hot. I have the pumpkin one. I'll check how many calories that has.

zedzedzed · 27/01/2014 13:54

What's your idea of FD Fun? Watching OH eat two slabs of tiger bread with bubbling cheese on top?

Grrrrrrrr.

I will DEFINITELY eat that tomorrow.

Ginger and honey salmon fillet with lemon-grass cous-cous and sprouting salad for dinner tonight, LO fast till then and, due to last night's much interrupted dinner, I'm not able to have my FD dinner till late...hope I make it close to my 24hrs.

Tea, tea, butter-mint tea.
Gum, gum, sugar-free gum.
Coffee, coffee, black-black coffee.

Three separate people told me I look 'slim' 'well' and 'trim' today. Yay!

Still...cheese on toast...

Tomorrow.

mscnile · 27/01/2014 13:56

Having a bad FD today. Cold and tired. Will try to keep cals down as low as possible though.

Will now read through for inspiration...

zedzedzed · 27/01/2014 13:57

Hi dili and *alabaster hope today goes well for you; I'm on my 4th week of this W.O.E and totally LOVE it so far, I hope you do to.

Stay busy, drink tea, go out, drink more tea and most importantly; you can have it tomorrow.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/01/2014 14:00

craggyhollow - I hope your dd is feeling better now. Count the calories and see if your FD is still on course. If not, we call it rescheduling Smile..

alabasterangel - Hello and welcome Smile.

FD still going okay, resisted the urge to have coleslaw for lunch as I knew it would set off the munchies and want to really enjoy my dinner as I did last week when I had fish and salad. Have to confess to having to lick my fingers of vanilla and chocolate buttercream when I was icing my muffins and the bag split but I didn't enjoy it and will be cleaning my teeth in a minute to get rid of the feeling.

Hope everyone is okay.

No more mice..

15 cups of green tea - are you bouncing off the walls? Sounds like a lot of caffeine. I may need to get some of that tries to stay awake after lunch, dribbles on papers

BsshBossh · 27/01/2014 15:42

FD going well. Only water, herb tea and black coffee so far. Had a hot bath and DD, who's home poorly, is sleeping so I managed a nap too. Plan on having my usual veg soup (carrot & coriander) for dinner tonight with some buttered bread slice.

Oh, DD stirring to life. Must go.
