Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Good Morning from down under.

Thanks for the good wishes for Aussie day. It was very nice. I even found time to do Trudy Styler's yoga workout. It is pretty good, I like the fact that there's a lot of movement in it. I may even do it again today. We had a lovely BBQ with friends, I stayed off the wine but had a couple of G&T's, and enjoyed beautiful pavlova. I was pretty restrained and didn't feel too stuffed afterwards. However I am pretty sure I went over TDEE, but I'm not stressing.

I am very pleased to have found that the scales have gone down again.Hurray. Not the lowest since starting 5:2 but a kilo lower than Friday morning (and that was before - ahem - morning ablutions...). So how is that possible? Obviously there was a glitch in Friday's weigh-in Confused Another fast day today. I was going to do Tuesday, but I have been invited out to lunch tomorrow, so will fast today.

I am thinking about spending the day sewing so I that will keep mind and hands busy, so hopefully I will have another easy fast day.

Congratulations foxsticks. Fabulous news. I hope all goes well for you.

TimeToPassGo · 26/01/2014 23:09

Congrats Foxsticks! Lovely news :)

A question about weight loss in pregnancy. I did read something before that said if you are obese there is no harm in losing weight while pregnant as long as it is done sensibly and through a healthy balanced diet. In my case I lose weight when I cut out crap and junk food and eat healthily - which could only be a good thing in pregnancy! Anyone have any info on this?

BigChocFrenzy · 26/01/2014 23:10

Re BMI / weight range and frame size: We also need to consider % muscle and body fat, so maybe waist size.
My wrists are 6", so I'm theoretically on the border for small / medium frame. However, my forearms, biceps, shoulders ... well, I'm a mesomorph who exercises, 'nuff said. My abs are defined, but I can still pinch an inch at the love handles, so I think BMI 21.5 and just below 26" waist would be ideal. Takes patience as I don't want to lose any muscle.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/01/2014 23:23

TimeToPass From scientific papers, although it is good for overweight women to diet before pregnancy, once pregnant it is better just to eat healthily to maintain and not try to lose weight, unless advised by doctors to do so.

This holds for all diets that reduce calories or complex carbs in some way, i.e. standard CR just as much as IF / 5:2 or low carb.

Epigeneticists say there is evidence that restricting calories, especially carbs, in pregnancy modifies the expression of the baby's RXRA gene, increasing the risk of the baby being obese from childhood onwards.
This epigenetic change is hereditary, so grandchildren etc affected.

Woah Jobyloo! I can't imagine ever not wanting a Yorkshire or stuffing ball Grin well done you!

BigChocFrenzy · 26/01/2014 23:26

So, in pregnancy, don't force yourself to over-eat, but try to eat healthily to TDEE for the 2 of you and obviously no fasting.

LilyJoAndMe · 27/01/2014 06:18

Morning All,
I'm not pregnant but it's definately interesting to read about the heriditary stuff related to dieting and pregnancy.
Just finished Jillian Michaels here. Didn't phone in - haven't got her number anyway ! ( I took a while to get why she was telling us that Smile).

Anyway FD here for me. Only had some 800cals yesterday so I'm a bit nervous about making it through till tonight. I'm already feeling hungry but I'm on my second tea and I'll keep going.
Ok - I'm really hoping for weight loss this week. Last week they didn't go down. So everytime I drink I'll just try and remember that goal today. ( pours another tea)

So, to all other FDers - good luck - thinking about you all.

somewherebecomingrain · 27/01/2014 07:24

Hello!

Just moves house so been quiet and quietly pigging out.

Fd today. Lots to read up on.

mummyof2 if you are lurking I did see your post about always being ignored! High five from this mummyof2

curveballs · 27/01/2014 07:44

Hello to fellow fasters, and all on NFDs.

So this week for me is all about creating a significant calorie deficit in order to celebrate my birthday without guilt at the weekend. FD's Monday and Wednesday and healthy NFD's Tuesday and Thursday. Absolutely zero treats! Am even determined to fit in a few workouts this weeks after an exceptionally lazy week last week. It's all about the Brew and water for me, until Saturday and then its all about the Wineand the rugby! Grin

BiscuitBribery · 27/01/2014 07:46

First weigh in, 2lbs down 42 to go Smile but most importantly I've lost 3" from my waist!

positively9something · 27/01/2014 07:56

Morning all!

Well I've still been fasting twice a week and I'm still over eating on non fast days Confused and I'm still not loosing weight. I can't seem to get in the frame of mind to do it properly. But also 1570 cals seems quite low. If only I could be more motivated to exercise my tdee would be higher. I really want to exercise but I never seem to get round to it with one thing or another. I know it all sounds like excuses but that's just how I feel at the moment Hmm

I guess maintaining is better than putting on weight

somewherebecomingrain · 27/01/2014 08:05

Oh Blimey just seen the stuff on pregnancy. I lost weight this pregnancy and my daughter is tall and v v heavy - have a whole thread on it - though not visibly overweight for a 10-month old baby.

I didn't low carb iirc.

Southeastdweller · 27/01/2014 08:08

In a year of doing this and now maintaining I've never felt as much in need of fasting as I do right now. Had a few indulgent days last week and came back from a weekend away in Yorkshire last night where the carb monster was well and truly unleashed. It's a good job the owners of Betty's say they'll never have a branch outside the county because my waistline couldn't take the inevitable frequent trips to stock up on their Fat Rascal scones! Clothes feeling that bit tighter right now.

Good luck today everyone else who's fasting.

zedzedzed · 27/01/2014 08:09

Morning all, hope everyone's groovy, FD-ers ready to do battle, NFD-ers munching away?

1st FD of the week here today. Due to an emergency phonecall that stretched out till 9.30pm my dinner didn't get finished till 10pm last night...does that mean I can't eat my FD dinner till 10pm tonight?! Don't think I'll make it, I'll aim for 8pm instead, so it won't be a full 24hrs but close enough to call it I reckon and my first cheat.

So, last week I did: 2xFDs under 500 and 5xNFDs at 1400, 1600, 1900, 1700, 1500 (TDEE is 2360). So even after Cupcake Gate and a 11 Giant Chocolate Buttons and a creme brulee yesterday (totm is wreaking its normal sugary havoc but is nearly over thankfully)...I think I was still 7,500 under my WEEKLY TDEE, which I hope means a loss of around 2lbs...maybe. Can't wait to weigh in...am dreading and longing to know.

But my knee boots are DEFINITELY baggy!

I'm eyeing up Jeans Number One on the back of my door (size 16) and am THINKING of trying them on at the end of the week...

Megrim · 27/01/2014 08:13

Wow Biscuit - 3" off your waist is fantastic. Well done you!

BetsyBell · 27/01/2014 08:39

3" trumps 2lbs biscuit! Woohoo, fantastic - that measurement is a key one as it means you're getting rid of visceral fat - the stuff that coats your organs.

positively 1570 is pretty low - are you on the short side? Maintaining is excellent, especially if you done it while over-eating on 5 days.

You must be getting close to your goal weight?

zed Baggy knee boots sounds like a victory whatever the scales say!

OP posts:
positively9something · 27/01/2014 09:06

Betsy - I am only 5'2 so yes very short Hmm

I still have a stone to go to goal, I would be very happy with half a stone for now but a stone is my ultimate goal.

It works out since I started beginning of November I have only lost 7.5 lbs it's better than putting on that amount but I really want to be under 10 stone which I just managed before Xmas.

The thing is it's my mindset at the moment I'm very miserable fed up, broke and not interested in exercise.

Megrim · 27/01/2014 09:16

positively if you can manage even a brisk walk that should release some endorphins and give your mood a lift.

Yikes, that was a busy weekend! Fair amount of eating but can tell my appetite is seriously reduced already. What a relief.

NFD for me today as I have a big boozy dinner for work tonight - though the menu is pretty low calorie for one of these things thankfully. Thought about fasting until then, but the odds that I'd get immediately pissed and say something inappropriate are too high to risk. Will have a nice hungover FD tomorrow.

Good luck all lucky Monday fasters!

Stokey · 27/01/2014 09:49

Hello everyone,
my third FD today. have so far struggled to do more than one a week - I start off OK but end up eating too much in the evening. don;t think I'm going too far over but probably 700 rather than 500.
Still even only doing one "proper" fast day, still feel I have been eating less on the other days - except Thursday when had big night out with large dinner, wine & G&T.

Positively am also small and my TDEE is 1560.

Oh & despite eating a big lunch yesterday am stil feeling peckish already. Other FDs I've been fine til about 11, think I may struggle.

Not sure what to eat for supper as have nothing in the house except eggs, cheese, bread & carbs. Actually may be some beans in a cupboard soemwhere.

BsshBossh · 27/01/2014 10:01

graceholl why don't you deliberately undereat your TDEE on weekdays to allow for guilt-free indulgent weekend eating? That's what I do.

Southeast welcome back to London :) Your York visit sounds yummy!

Morning all. FD for me today. First day of TOM so feeling bleurgh plus my DD is poorly so home today too. But she's playing happily in her room right now so I'm managing to veg out on the sofa with MN. My mum is coming over later so I will try and get a soak in the bath in. I've never ever suffered during periods but now I'm 43 I'm finding them much more draining these days.

BiscuitBribery · 27/01/2014 10:04

Cheese omelet and beans Stokey?

Thank you Megrim and Betsy Smile I worry about how much weight I carry on my belly, it's the main reason I wanted to give this WOE a go, so I'm thrilled to see such a difference so soon!

almostthereagain · 27/01/2014 10:06

Lovely news fox Enjoy your pregnancy, such a special time.
southeastdweller I went to school in York & we used to have fat rascals for lunch! Blush Too delish!
Had a crappy w/e, all gone tits upSad Have done something terrible to my back so all exercise is halted, even walking is painful. Lack of sleep & family life has meant I have been over tdee, stupidly weighed myself this am to find I'm back where I started. Have done my sums & it will be really tricky to manage much deficit this week, doesn't help that I've promised to take ds to Pizza Express tonight. 3 weeks today til I get my bikini on yikes!
All I feel like doing is drinking tea, eating white toast & watching netflix but am trying some self restraint, wish me luck!

Megrim · 27/01/2014 10:25

Almost have you seen MrsF's advice for your back on the exercise thread? DH follows this (has a big foam roller) and it really helps his back.
