Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And Toffee with a medium build you wouldn't suit the lower end of the range. So don't worry so much!!!

Over the next few days I will dig out a fat photo of me and stick it on profile next to a current snap. Just to show you what is possible.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/01/2014 19:35

I am 5 foot 5.5 - 6inch. Depends who measures me.

I think my BMI is 25.2.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/01/2014 19:37

I can't get my head around me being this weight when my baby was 2 months old, I must have had bigger breasts as was a J cup in my feeding bra yet I still am over weight really but feel slim as I was so fat before and now I am annoying myself so do ignore Blush.

MrsFlorrick · 26/01/2014 19:42

Toffee

65kg is 10.3 st and that is 23 BMI for you

That's just one small measly stone to lose before you reach a weight which will suit you.

Your lower end at 22BMI is 62kg which is 9st 12.

So yes Toffee you will do this easily!!

See you there before Easter. Grin

Bumblebeejumble · 26/01/2014 19:43

toffee sounds like someone needs an early night? Nothing wrong with a couple of biscuits...just don't eat the whole pack. Says hypocritical me, after yesterday!

ErrolTheDragon · 26/01/2014 19:56

Just started using MFP today, because despite my dislike of calorie counting, I need to do it for DH (not keeping track of him, I mean working out how many cals per portion of home cooked food).

That wrist measurement thing puts me at medium frame, I'd always assumed small. So... if I want to aim for mid-range BMI I should be 52.25 kg, about 8st 5. Roughly a stone to go then for that.

BiscuitBribery · 26/01/2014 20:07

My FD has turned into a mini fast at 917. Feeling so much better for it after last nights carb fest!
Hope your day is going well Jobyloo!

That wrist thing is very interesting! Has confirmed that I'm a large build. I already thought that because at my thinnest (unhealthily thin for me) I was a size 12. I would look awful as a 10 or lower.

BiscuitBribery · 26/01/2014 20:08

Oh and congratulations Fox!

zedzedzed · 26/01/2014 20:10

FOXXXXXXXXXY Yay! How exciting, fingers crossed for smooth sailing.

And hey, I'll still be here in a year...maybe seeya back here then!!

Woo-hoo!

Foxsticks · 26/01/2014 20:14

Thanks everyone Smile

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/01/2014 20:14

I'm getting snappy with DH. He is being annoying though. I had 3 stone to lose once I finally realised I was fat and so far I've list two.

LilyJoAndMe · 26/01/2014 20:20

Wildwater - beautiful post and very encouraging too . Thanks
Great idea Bigchoc for the 50cals of milk.
Contrats to Foxsticks - lovely news :)
Really interesting about the wrist stuff.
And Toffee - go get away from your DH- go read a book - go to bed- read some other threads on MN- just don't start munching or giving him too much energy .

HandMini · 26/01/2014 20:20

Hi everyone, I've sat out of the thread for the last few days, but have some good things to report - went to Pizza Express on Saturday and had a fucking SALAD!! I never thought that would be me. It was not a fast day. Also just had salady stuff and cheese for supper tonight.

Fasting will be tough this week - I think work commitments mean I have to do Tues and Thurs and will be working late those nights as well. Must steel myself.

Toffee - get thee to bed ASAP. Take a good book and a cup of tea and start all over again tomorrow!

MrsFlorrick · 26/01/2014 20:22

SeeToffee GrinGrin one small measely stone to go Grin

2/3 of the way there Grin

Something to celebrate.

You're doing great.

Curve. Glad you got to the bottom of it with the dehydration. Bssh and TIP are more the experts re FD and dehydration. All to do with less food intake which means less fluid (as in what you would otherwise have eaten) so you need to drink more than you would on a NFD.

Not2bObvious · 26/01/2014 20:23

congrats Fox that's fabulous news! Sending positive vibes your way for a lovely 9 months.
Toffee off to bed with you, sure fire way to stop the nibbles/potential arguments/fix the tiredness. I'm zonked myself, but watching Call the Midwife which I love. So enjoyable, but god I'm glad my 2 were born these days - got to love the drugsWink
Big big feed today, close to 3000 but one day a week is fine since I've been under all week. Hard week ahead but hoping to start the day with Jillian, and then a 500-600 FD. I'm sure it'll be v busy here tomorrow! Sleep well all

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/01/2014 20:27

It's the hormones. I have realised I am smack bang in the middle of my cycle give or take 2 days, ovulating and wish DH would bog off. Now I know it is biology I am less cross Grin.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/01/2014 20:29

Hard week ahead but hoping to start the day with Jillian, and then a 500-600 FD.

Me too. Smile. Quite a restrained NFD today for me though.

LilyJoAndMe · 26/01/2014 20:29

Here long day doing DIY stuff. Went to the cinema too. It was a great film- Yves Saint Laurent. Usually I'm really tempted to get sweets but I focused on the film and that was enough.

Now I'm on my way home and I've only eaten 850 cals. I'm tired and would like to stop there but I'm a bit nervous too because tomorrow's a FD and I'm scared of waking up hungry in the mo?ning. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions anyone ?

Not2bObvious · 26/01/2014 20:57

Lily don't be scared, just start the day with a pint if water and see how you go. Not sure how you stagger your FD but for mine I skip breakfast and eat a lunch if about 200, the dinner of 300. Plenty of black tea and water throughout the day but on v hungry days I eat lunch a little earlier. Just keep busy busy! Good luck, there'll be plenty of support here tomorrow I'm sure Wink

LilyJoAndMe · 26/01/2014 21:07

Cheers Not2
Yup - I'm scared. On FD's I wait to eat all my 500cals at the end of the day.
Ok I'm going to try and stick to a herbal tea tonight and then drink loads during the day.
Also scared because I'll be starting the day with Jillian Michaels.
Ok - eyes down eh!

TalkinPeace · 26/01/2014 21:32

Just spotted this .....

eating mindfully and in a controlled manner during pregnancy is GOOD FOR YOU

Not2bObvious · 26/01/2014 22:17

Seems there's of few of us with an appointment with Ms. Michaels in the morning - no phoning it in/finish strong/show intention etc etc. My muscles have only recovered from my last session and that was on Wednesday! Must be doing me good if it hurts, rightConfused

Jobyloo · 26/01/2014 22:22

Congratulations Fox that's fab news.

Biscuit well done on mini FD. I was aiming for 1000 today but before I knew it, it was dinner hadn't eaten all day thanks to DP making cups of tea all day. am totally hooked on peppermint & liquorice tea at the mo thanks to someone's recommendation on here. Can't remember who it was but thank you! Couldn't eat all my dinner so saved 1 sausage and rest of The veg for tomorrow's lunch. Didn't fancy the Yorkshire or stuffing ball so have ended on 340 cal. Cannot believe how my portion sizes are changing Smile

Toffee feeling your pain with hormones, they're a right royal pain in the ar$e aren't they. 4 biscuits are nothing!

BsshBossh · 26/01/2014 22:35

Foxsticks wonderful news Thanks.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/01/2014 22:48

What a lovely surprise for you, FoxSticks. Congratulations.
