Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I can't believe how easy 5:2 really is! I know I can stick with it because of it's (IMO) two best points. 1) It really does reduce my appetite overall, so I'm not always thinking about food. 2) It doesn't come with a massive list of things to buy in order for it to be successful. In fact I'm saving money on my food bill because I'm not munching mindlessly.

All good stuff, SoreLip! But you missed out the main one, in most people's minds - the mantra, "I can have it tomorrow!"

And there are many more reasons why this is such a healthy and easy WOL. How about we all add our own to the list - cutting and pasting as we go - and then, when we think we have a comprehensive list, post it on the Tips and Hints thread, or the Inspirations thread?

So, here we go (in no particular order):
We're not deprived of anything - we can always have it tomorrow
It reduces appetite overall - so we're not always thinking about food
It doesn't come with a massive list of things to buy in order for it to be successful
It saves money on food bills because a) We're not munching mindlessly, and, b) We buy less food.

Anyone - please feel free to edit the above - and perhaps change the tense/pronouns etc! And, of course, add your own favourite. Smile

(Just to add - I'm not having it tomorrow, since I'll be fasting, so I'm having it today! A couple of squares of Lindt's chilli choc with a cup of coffee. Won't be able to have anything after six!) Grin

Breadandwine · 26/01/2014 16:30

Make that two and a half squares - the coffee and the chocolate have to finish together! Grin

TalkinPeace · 26/01/2014 16:53

I just want to hide in the cupboard in Toffees kitchen as I suspect it permanently smells yummy
cooking ham for sarnies : OK I'm a fail as a mum xx TiP

ErrolTheDragon · 26/01/2014 17:00

Its my rest days from my normal exercise, but as the weather has been a bit rubbish, I excavated the rowing machine we have in our garage and did a bit on that. Sorta HIIT - 5 mins steady row to warm up, (30 secs as fast as I can get it, 1 minute slow)x5, then the rest of the time to 20 mins at my normal pace.

MelanieCheeks · 26/01/2014 17:06

Planning my FD meal for tomorrow - I have half a celeriac in the fridge. I can use it to make a sort of mash, yes? Quorn suasages will accompany.

Felix90 · 26/01/2014 18:19

Hi everyone. Just been reading a few threads on this board and thinking of joining. I've done IF before (4:3) and did quite well, and I'm not entirely sure why I gave it up!

My DD is 5 weeks today and I have a hell of a lot of weight to lose (around 5st ideally). I am no longer breastfeeding her but I am still expressing so she's being combi-fed formula and expressed milk. Does this rule me out of being able to follow 5:2? I've found that now I'm no longer directly bf, I'm not as hungry as I was before so I don't think I'm burning half as much energy as I was when I was bf.

Hoping someone can reassure me if I'm still able to follow the plan? Even if it means upping my calories slightly on fast days.

Thanks in advance!

MelanieCheeks · 26/01/2014 18:24

Hi Felix, welcome along! The book says no while BFing, but there are many members on here who successfully combine the 2. I'm sure some of them will be along shortly.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/01/2014 18:28

Give me a few days, TiP. My baking cupboard is so full things often fall out so there is no room for even a teeny tiny Lego person at the moment. I am only cooking the ham for sandwiches as I am fed up of having 20 choices in the shop and not knowing which one to get, plus paying £3-4 for about 3 slices is getting a bit much.

I am shattered. It is annoying me tbh and I have no idea why I feel so tired but I get days like this quite often. I wasn't hungry but came up with some food I wanted so I have had it, loved it, but feel like I have let the side down. I am always wondering why I was all showy offy about doing a 24 hour LOF as I have eaten tonight, will fast tomorrow and won't eat until dinner so it would be a normal NFD-FD situation Confused.

I need to make sure I don't get carried away thinking as I am at my lowest I can slacken off a bit as it wouldn't take long to be up 3 or more pounds.

Another thing I have been pondering. My ideal weight range is 8 stone3lbs to 11 stone 2lbs. How is that possible? it is ridiculous. I am 11 stone 2lbs now and if I lost 3 more stones I would be severely thin. No way would it look right.

MelanieCheeks · 26/01/2014 18:30

Toffee, that range is cos Everyone Is Different.

Felix90 · 26/01/2014 18:32

Thanks Melanie. I've posted on another existing thread about 5:2 whilst bf but it's about 10 days old so thought there would be more traffic here Grin

Hopefully I can do it and start on Tuesday! I'm feeling motivated for once...

Foxsticks · 26/01/2014 18:35

Hi all, I'm not sure if you remember me but I popped on early last week to ask if a raging thirst and feeling tired was common with 5:2 as I had just started and the only time I'd felt like that before was when I was pregnant. Well I said I'd update you and I POAS today and got a positive! I'm so excited!!!! A bit gutted that I didn't lose a bit more weight before getting pregnant but I'll just have to be careful not to splurge too much over the next few months. Good luck to everyone with their WOL!

MrsFlorrick · 26/01/2014 18:36

Toffee. That wide range is down to build. If someone is small build (usually very small wrists, ankles hands and feet) they would essentially be over weight at the higher end of the range.

Whereas someone with a large build (wide/big wrists ankles etc) would be perfect at the higher end of the range but very thin at the lower end.

You can usually work out your build type based on wrist measurement.

Ill have a google for you and come back as there are several.

MrsFlorrick · 26/01/2014 18:41

Here
www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/imagepages/17182.htm

This has me as a small which I knew already.
My GP told me that with me small frame she would consider me overweight if my BMI was over 23.

Perhaps you have a large frame and your ideal BMI may be 24?

MrsFlorrick · 26/01/2014 18:47

In fact my frame is very small!

I'm 5'10.5" but my wrists measure less than 5.5". This body frame would have even someone at 5'2" at a small
Frame.

This is why I'm aiming to keep my BMI under 21. Pref around 20. That's 66kg for me. CW is 70kg. My "goal" is just under 69kg as that's 21 BMI. But long term that's where I'm heading
Pre - DC my weight always bounced between 65 and 68kg. So that's probably where it's good for me to be.

Have a look at your wrist measurement Toffee and see where you come
Out

TalkinPeace · 26/01/2014 18:51

Tofeee
18.5 to 24 is te range that includes all builds ...
anglaise is a t BMI 19 : she' look like the michelin man at 24 ....
I'm at 21 : I'd look scrawny at 18.5 and lardy at 25
a friend at the gym is a triathlete - all muscle and is 24 : because that suits her build

BMI is a proxy for body fat.
you need to learn to listen to your body and see which weight is right for you

MrsFlorrick · 26/01/2014 18:55

Fox!!!! ShockShockShock GrinGrinGrin

MrsFlorrick · 26/01/2014 18:56

FoxGrin. So excited I forgot to write congratulations!!! Grin

BetsyBell · 26/01/2014 19:03

toffee I'm approx BMI 23 and it seems to suit my small to medium frame and I look pretty tiny tbh. I don't seem myself getting anywhere below 22, especially as I'm trying to get some muscley stuff going on now!

Congratulations Fox! How exciting Grin xx

OP posts:
Foxsticks · 26/01/2014 19:04

Grin thanks Mrs Florrick! I'm so pleased but a bit scared too as I mc last year. Fingers crossed all goes well with this one. Start 5:2 and hopefully end up with a baby - it isn't bad really Smile. I'm so pleased though that I'll know how to shift the baby weight when it comes to it!

Megrim · 26/01/2014 19:13

Foxsticks - congrats!!!

I put on 1.5 stone with DS1 (pigged out!) and it took me a while to lose it (did the Scarsdale Diet, if anyone remembers that one). I was determined not to do the same thing with DS2, so ate more carefully and didn't put any additional weight on at all (just as we'll as I also had the separated abdominal muscles thing).

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/01/2014 19:17

Apparently I am medium build. My wrist was 6.5inches. So what does that make my ideal weight? I was 10 stone 2lbs when I got pregnant. I was 9 stone 3lbs when I was 21. I am 41 now and would be worried about losing another stone Hmm. Who knew being too thin would scare me Confused.. It so is never going to happen, is it?

Congratulations Fox. Flowers.

curveballs · 26/01/2014 19:20

Firstly huge congrats to fox!! Grin

Haven't posted for a couple of days, and not had chance to catch up with thread properly

Been poorly this weekend. Think mrs f was right about possible dehydration. Was so busy stressing at work last week, that didn't feel hungry during fast days at all. Unfortunately forgot to keep drinking as well. Massive slap on the wrists, and lesson learned. Thanks mrs f Thanks

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/01/2014 19:29

What do you all do when you knackered to make it go away?

I am sat here so tired I could cry. I have just eaten 4 biscuits. Enjoyed them very much but I ate them to wake me up which is ridiculous and all I want to do now is stuff my face. I want white bread, lurpak and the ham I cooked for DS's packed lunch. DH has annoyed me by asking if I wanted anything, me saying don't know what I want, he comes back with wine for him nothing for me and tells me to get it myself as I will burn calories off walking to the kitchen. Anyone convict me? Hmm.

MrsFlorrick · 26/01/2014 19:31

Toffee. ((((Hugs))))). Relax!!!
You're currently 25bmi? Correct?

With a medium frame 22 to 23 BMi would probably suit you.

Not sure how tall you are exactly. Tell me and i will work it out for you

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/01/2014 19:32

Can't even type properly with the tiredness. Of course I meant, ....when you are so knackered to make it go away.
