Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

BUURRNNSS night
had haggis in my pie at lunchtime ...
that'll do

and utterly blowing the TDEE
yeah well, and
or in English : so what if its only sometimes
just be strict for the rest of the week and the calories will flush through rather than settle

Lilliput · 25/01/2014 21:04

We've had haggis neeps and tatties. You've got to have plenty if butter and black pepper in your neeps. It was bloody delish.

DorisAllTheDay · 25/01/2014 21:36

Oooh, Bumblebee those are Burns Night icons! I take it all back.

Lilliput · 25/01/2014 21:50

I've been trying on jeans. 12 a bit too big and 10 too tight. Grrrr.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/01/2014 22:04

FD finished at 565 cals, which is fine after HIIT.
I fancied some broccoli and white bean soup, which I make by mixing 2 tins - that's as much cooking as I do normally Blush Kitchen is closed.

Now looking forward to my FD tomorrow, after fasted abs and more HIIT spin.

Oof Choc,
Yes, what you've told me about exercise and water rétention does seem to fit. I really appreciate the info.
I felt kind of bloated whilst I was doing my exercise seriously - even relugiously - and watching my WOE too.
I kind of felt that my body was holding on to something and that there was not much point fighting it.
I've still found it hard to go with the flow - waiting is not my usual WOL.
So thanks for the info.

Bumblebeejumble · 25/01/2014 22:14

Thanks guys, kitchen closed. I didn't quite eat the whole bag of mini eggs, and have firmly vowed to fast tomorrow. And fix the chicken shed door, which got blown to smithereens in that storm this afternoon. Let's hope the foxes don't come out tonight, because I don't think the bin bag I taped over it will keep em out...

Burns night, eh? Hope everyone enjoyed their haggis and whisky!

hopefulgum · 25/01/2014 22:20

Just marking my place, otherwise I can't remember where I got up to.

I have noticed that although I am able to go to sleep easily after a fast day, I wake at about 1-2 am. Is that the ancestoral blueprint at work: being more aware in case there's a deer to catch? Somebody mentioned that after fasting we may be alert to catching food?

Anyway, I manage to go back to sleep reminding myself that I can have breakfast when I wake...This morning I had plum clafoutis for breakfast. I had made it for dessert a couple of night's ago, but didn't eat it as I wasn't hungry, then couldn't have it yesterday, so I decided to have it for breakfast. And I am glad I did. It was bloody divine, and only about 204 calories.Less calories than the bloody gluten free bread I had during the week.

It is Australia Day today. Hurray for us! Thanks

So we'll be celebrating with a BBQ tonight, followed by pavlova.I will try to keep calories down today so that I can have lamb chops, pavlova and a couple of glasses of champagne.Wine

TalkinPeace · 25/01/2014 22:24

water
more water
ideally a pint before sleep
nothing wakes you up better than dehydration

vicariously enjoying the Southern hemisphere sunshine

Megrim · 25/01/2014 23:14

If I drank a pint of water at bedtime I'd be up weeing all night.

I'll secretly admit to quite liking waking up at 1 am and thinking that I can either have another 4 hours or another 6.5 hours sleep.

BsshBossh · 25/01/2014 23:15

hopeful yep I'm a FD middle-of-the-night-waker too - even after nearly 12 months of 5:2ing. I manage to get back to sleep with the help of a very grateful obliging DH Blush. It's all as nature intended Grin.

BsshBossh · 25/01/2014 23:16

Happy Burns Night & Australia Day folks!

TalkinPeace · 25/01/2014 23:17

megrim
not if you are dehydrated : which most women are ...

bssh on the other hand I'd get a gold medal at snoring : I can snore when sober, underweight and facing downwards
DH and I are only parents and married due to effective use of the spare room ....

Megrim · 25/01/2014 23:28

TiP - I must be a rare breed. The only time I'm dehydrated is when I've been out on the lash.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/01/2014 23:41

Happy Australia day to you and your family Hopeful
Flowers Cake Wine

Breadandwine · 26/01/2014 01:15

I've just demolished 2 thick slices of bread* and a load of cold leftover mashed potatoes (curried, with bouillon powder and nooch added!) - which I did not need!

I can't do my usual trick of missing the following morning's breakfast, since it's Sunday - and we always have breakfast in bed (porridge) with the papers on a Sunday morn!

Ah, well, roll on Monday, when I might do a complete LOF!

*Cut from the Mumsnet Loaf!

almostthereagain · 26/01/2014 08:34

Was it full moon yesterday? So many of us gone over TDEE!
Better day today everyone.

BiscuitBribery · 26/01/2014 09:05

We had an impromptu Indian take away, I've no idea how but I managed to stay just under TDEE! Feeling sluggish today though (too many carbs) so I'm have a 3rd FD to finish off my first week. Steak and lots of green veg planned for tonight Smile

Hope everyone's having a great weekend!

Jobyloo · 26/01/2014 10:11

Morning all
Biscuits having a 3rd FD too today. Will be having sausage without the mash potatoes but replaced by my favourite mashed swede and carrot and loads of broccoli.

I will get to the gym at some point today as well but for the moment am rather happy having another cuppa in bed snuggled up, whilst it's so wild and vile out there.

hopeful happy Australia Day, enjoy the barbie! Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/01/2014 10:41

Morning all.

I got confused and put the chicken in too soon so it will be ready at 12.23 now instead of 12.30. So that just proves I can't add up either as I thought it was going to be ready about 11.50 when I started typing this pointless paragraph.

Have a ham joint in the oven which will be sliced for DS2's sandwiches, raisin and orange muffins cooling on the table for packed lunches and tea time dessert and a husband who is meant to be clearing out the garage but I suspect is ironing after I told him off Grin.

I plan lunch then a 24 hour LOF. Then next time I make soup I am doing French Pea.

Enjoy your days everyone.

My highlight will be when DS2 comes home. He is at PIL and I haven't seen him since 11.20am yesterday and the house feels all wrong without him.

mscnile · 26/01/2014 11:01

Another member of the way over TDEE gang here, totm is my excuse but the cramps have now subsided and I'm feeling almost human again. Shredded this morning rather than running as it's pouring with rain and the wind is howling.

Toffee you are a amazing to have done all that already, all I've managed is shred and shower!

TIP our marriage succeeds on a similar basis, holidays are always a struggle...!

hopeful have a great oz day in the sunshineEnvy

So glad it's not just me that's struggling this weekend, it really helps having you guys to touch base with! Good luck today everyone.

NotAsTired · 26/01/2014 11:09

Hello

Haven't done any fasting for well over week. I caught a cold, then got laryngitis and then if I was not feeling rundown enough, I got UTI and now I have flu with associated fever/chills. Antibiotics have left me feeling sick and I am worn out. Sad You know when you feel as if you are never going to feel better? Well, that's how I feel. Am exhausted.

Sorry for the pity party here but I feel miserable.

NotAsTired · 26/01/2014 11:17

One piece of good news is that I am maintaining my weight quite well. Maybe I should go over to the maintainers thread .

DorisAllTheDay · 26/01/2014 11:49

That sounds very nasty, NotasTired*. I do hope you can hunker down in this revolting weather and get some rest. Sending you Thanks for a swift recovery. And I think you should eat whatever you want at the moment - the priority is to get your strength back.

I'm on a train to a work event - three days away, will be back Tuesday night. I've already eaten far too much, there's nothing like hours of enforced idleness to get me eating. And I know I'm going to struggle at the event itself because the food won't be at all healthy and there will be regular breaks to eat/drink some more. I'll do my best not to go mad, but I'm resigned to some weight gain. Next Wednesday, Friday and Sunday will be FDs which is probably the best damage limitation I can do.

Hope your chickens are safe and sound, Bumblebee.

Good luck anyone fasting today. Happy Australia day hopeful and anyone else who is celebrating it.
