Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Bumblebee, Yes! I can squash my calves into my wellies, but it's not a good look, especially if I'm surrounded my other wellie-wearers. I can but dream that one day I too will have a 'gap' between my calves and wellie-tops!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 25/01/2014 12:42

woodchuck - I have scales that remember each separate person's weight. You input your height and it tells you weight, fat content and water content. I got them from Asda and I think they are Salter ones. I can check if you want.

Recipe posted later. I am about to make it and will see how it goes first Grin.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/01/2014 13:08

I'm FDing today - anyone else ?

Sat or Sun is always one of my FDs. I usually do LOFs, with low carb shakes, because it is so quick and I'm so lazy

I'm currently relaxing with my iPad while the cleaning crew get my dump sparkling clean again and my laundry churns around.
Afterwards I will go to the gym and stay there about 3 hrs. I only lift and spin for 1-2 hrs, but I relax afterwards with sauna, stretching and more iPadding.

This weekend routine works for me, as it keeps me occupied, entertained and away from temptation.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 25/01/2014 13:27

Oh my! It is delicious. Fruit and cheese scone with curried parsnip soup. The soup is under 200 calories, no idea the scone but check out my recipes and make them. You won't regret it Smile.

BB enjoy your sauna later. I might go shopping as a cousin had a baby yesterday so I need so buy teeny tiny clothes for him and chocolate for mum.

woodchuck · 25/01/2014 13:30

Giving blood on Monday. Is fasting a bad idea? Monday is my usual FD, I am busy Tuesday so cannot swap

Could I do a fast period maybe after lunch on Sunday, and then eat normal lunch and tea on monday (blood donor session at half 5) or woild I be best to forget it altogether kn Monday, and fast on Wednesday. I like to fast in Thursdays too and a bit nervous of this option as I have never done 2 FDs in a row

mazzledazzle I don't have a welly gap yet. Still dreaming of that. But they're in, so I no longer fear the puddles Grin

non-5:2 query alert. At what age did your DCs stop napping? toddler has just turned 3, so will be going to school 2 1/2 days from Easter. But she still naps for 1 1/2-2 hrs in middle of the day. Is this weird? My other two didn't stop napping until they were 4 or 5, but they only did half days when they started school, so they just napped in the morning.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/01/2014 13:48

Woodchuck Definitely move your FD. Nobody should fast the day they give blood. Well done, you, for donating,
Flowers

BigChocFrenzy · 25/01/2014 14:00

WasWondering Most reliable method is to calculate your TDEE for your exercise level and average that over NFDs. So, don't eat any exercise calories back then.

Best for fat-burning is high intensity exercise, not hours trotting at a moderate speed on a treadmill or jogging outside
Try HIIT classes such as advanced spin or martial arts.
If you don't belong to a gym, then create your own high intensity interval routine with sprinting / cycling / skipping etc

Plenty of ideas and support on the 5:2/IF Exercise thread Pop over and see us.

The absolute best exercise program is the one you like and can fit into your life on a regular basis.

Its interesting how we view our activity/excercise levels. I work 2 days in a hospital, 13 hours on my feet, and do at least 4-5 hours in the gym doing high intensity such as spin, pump, circuits. However, for calculating my TDEE on MFP I say I'm lightly active, this gives me a TDEE around 1800. I've only recently changed this as I was putting sedentary and just adding 300 odd cals each time I went to the gym. Certainly when I was at home with my younger kids I would rate this as sedentry even though I was movjng around all day. Maybe I'm a massive under estimator but just a thought

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 25/01/2014 16:22

Back from walking 1.5 hours to the shop and around the shop. I walked so that I could have some chocolate later after our curry without fretting. I am shattered now!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 25/01/2014 16:26

woodchuck - BCF is 100% right. I once gave blood having not eaten anything that morning. It wasn't pretty BlushSad.

Talking of wellies , I treated myself to some Hunter boots a couple of years ago and bought the men's ones as the women's were a bit too snug. They are now too big!! I still wear them though as £80 is too much to replace them when they are still fine.

DorisAllTheDay · 25/01/2014 17:18

Angie, I never know what to put re activity/exercise levels. I do a lot of walking in a day but no other exercise. I usually put lightly active, and if I do more than 100 minutes' walking in a day I count it separately as exercise. I think I might be under-counting because I do lose weight eating my TDEE calculated that way. But I don't mind - I'd rather get a nice surprise on the scales because I've underestimated than a nasty shock because I've gone too far in the other direction. You sound much more than lightly active to me, though. If you're on your feet all day that's a lot of calories used, and 4-5 hours (weekly, I assume?) of high intensity in the gym seems huge to me.

I've just been looking up this month's bank statement online. My food bill (I live alone, dcs are grown-up and away) is about half what it would be in a 'normal' month. Not exactly an NSV, but it's helping with the traditional January cash-flow problem.

TalkinPeace · 25/01/2014 18:03

woodchuck
yup, the bit where you are going wrong is the "technically my fast has ended so I have supper"
you have no deficit if you are having a meal only an hour later ....
the whole point is that you are missing meals and calories, not just deferring them.
Think in terms of 16:8 ie that you only eat in an 8 hour window in every 24 hours
its great for suppressing the appetite.

almostthereagain · 25/01/2014 18:21

Will be way over TDEE today, just one of those daysSad Woke up late with a head ache so not enough time to pack my salad. Felt ill whilst out so had the best coffee shop option I could go for. Picked up a good M&S salad option then snaffled some french bread that was going begging then shared a pkt crisps with DS on the way homeHmm Still got a meal to go & want a drink IT'S THE W/E!
Tomorrow's another day. Will have to be a good day as out for pizza on mon...I see myself taking a step backwards next week...

almostthereagain · 25/01/2014 18:26

I am not eating back/counting any exercise & have logged as sedentary, as last time I think it was detrimental to me mentally iykwim. I could almost kid myself that I had spare cals, 'it says I can have it on mfp!'Hmm I would prefer feel virtuous under control, stay under TDEE & count any exercise as a bonus. However, I am not doing anything strenuous but would describe myself as active.

AngieM2 · 25/01/2014 18:45

See Doris I dont lose easy - just 1lb a week - but not got much to lose. Have only just done TDEE with activity this week, but I think I'll go back to sedentry and not count any exercise calories in at all. This would give me 1600 cals on my 5 days or less if I need to get another 5lb off (currently 10.3 and would like to be 9.10 for room to manoeuvre) but at 44 not sure my face will take much less!

vvviola · 25/01/2014 18:47

Hoping for a light day today to make up for going over TDEE yesterday. But we're going to a seafood festival I think, so it may be a little tricky! I'm itching to try another FD but it will probably be Tuesday before I can do that as it's a bank holiday weekend here and DH wants to do lots of stuff, which always includes brunch/coffee/icecream no wonder I put on weight

Bumblebee - DD1 napped until she was nearly 4 because they had nap time at her pre-school. DD2 is 2.5 and probably only naps every other day (and seems to sleep better at night if she doesn't nap during the day)

Jobyloo · 25/01/2014 19:01

Hi all, have been lurking over the last 24hrs, I've been a bit of a mardy bum if I'm honest. Everything was going so well and you know that pride comes before a fall...well thought I could have a FD and make a lemon drizzle cake for a friend...nuff said. I think about 3/4 of the mixture actually made it in to the tin. Then thought to myself well can have a NFD and rearrange the fast day until Sunday. Didn't eat anything else until 5pm where the beast was released...OMG...TDEE was well and truly blown.

So have given myself a serious talking to, can't expect to be perfect at this WOE all the time, back on track today and not going over TDEE. Back to the gym tomorrow and fingers crossed that this blip won't affect WI next Fri.

Some great posts on here today, thanks guys because you've helped me sort my head out!

Megrim · 25/01/2014 19:27

I used to have a pair of Hunter wellies too - they lasted me 25 years! The ones in shops now are too narrow for my calves, but the old ones fitted OK? I think you can buy Huntress wellies, which are a wider fit round the calves, so maybe that's what my old ones were - I've always had muscular calves from riding and cycling.

Bumblebeejumble · 25/01/2014 20:15

Blagh. Bad evening. Started on the pasta, the garlic bread, then a movie with popcorn and have just eaten nearly all the bloody cookies the kids made this afternoon. Sailed waaayyyy over tdee. And the lunchbox biscuit bars are calling me too. Tell me I haven't undone all the good stuff I've done in the last two months? I thought I had learned some self control! Sad Angry

Ps why are there a bunch of icons with hats on all of a sudden?

DorisAllTheDay · 25/01/2014 20:44

Icons with hats? Nope, can't see them. Are you sure there wasn't a little something extra in your kids' cookies, Bumblebee? I wouldn't worry too much about the odd blip. Just put it down to experience and start again tomorrow. Someone either way up this thread or maybe on the tips and hints thread said it's not what you eat on any one day that counts, it's what you eat in a month. So I gather we can have the occasional melt-down so long as it doesn't get to be a habit.

I've just had my first experience of a NFD when I haven't particularly wanted to eat. Others have written about them and I've been jealous! But today I've experienced it for myself, hooray. I did 16:8 and broke fast with some fruit salad at about 10.00, then I had a big bowl of thick vegetable and lentil soup with a roll (defrosted from the freezer to stop me buying and eating an entire loaf of bread) for a late lunch. And since then I really haven't felt hungry. It's the weirdest feeling and not something I'm used to!

Not2bObvious · 25/01/2014 20:45

Don't worry Bumble, 1 high cal day won't matter, as long as it doesn't turn into 7! That was always where I yo-yo'ed in the past, I'd be super strict for a few days, then crank - eats rings around myself, feel guilty and continue the eating for another few days. Close the kitchen now and maybe do a 16:8 tomorrow if you want to repentWink
Day 2 with no chocolate, not too bad. Had some fruit after dinner, not that I was particularly hungry but wanted to up my fibre and also remind myself that fruit can be a nice treat too. Stopped after 2 glasses of low alcohol wine too. Goodness me, so well behaved for a Saturday night. Kitchen now closed in my gaff
