Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

That sounded smug didn't it? Blush I'm genuinely shocked I'm not overheating, I'm a massive over eater! (My 4st was put on solely by emotional eating caused by PND; I've recently finally come off my meds so losing the weight is the final step to being 'me' again Smile )

BiscuitBribery · 24/01/2014 16:28

That sounds brilliant Grace, you're doing so well! It sounds to me like you'll be putting muscle weight on as you're losing fat. What wonderful progress Smile

frenchfancy · 24/01/2014 16:37

Didn't sound smug at all biscuit

Well done MrsF; it is even better than going shopping isn't it.

grace yes you are right to look long term and think about how you feel as well as look. You may not lose 2 stone in 5 weeks on 5:2, but this time once you've lost it you will never see it again.

I've just had 90 60 cals of cake batter - yum (NFD so not a problem)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 24/01/2014 16:48

MrsF what an absolutely amazing NSV - well done! Grin

Pizza for tea tonight, and wine. Yum.

I have eaten nowhere near as much today as I have been doing, nowhere near. Even though I gave myself permission to eat when I was hungry etc etc.

:)

MrsFlorrick · 24/01/2014 16:54

Thanks everyone GrinGrinGrin

Biscuits. Not smug at all Smile

And listen to TIP. No snacking. It really really helps. And I know its not what the new folk want to hear.

Your body will learn to do without snacks and it will stop screaming for food.

The combination of exercise and 5:2 does seem particularly good for reducing flab and increasing muscle/fitness. Which matters more to the way you look and feel than a number on a scale, IMO.

BsshBossh · 24/01/2014 17:08

Great NSV MrsF and two very inspirational posts grace.

Megrim · 24/01/2014 17:10

I felt my heart was about to fall out of my arse

Shock

Thank you for that very vivid mental picture Grin

Getting towards the end of Week 3 for me, and I'm already feeling so much better, and apart from some grumpiness at the end of my second FD (but mainly due to DH and kids all sitting around waiting for me to cook them food the minute I walked through the door) I've felt remarkably calm and relaxed. Most unlike my normal state of mild annoyance at everyone and everything.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 24/01/2014 17:29

mrsF amazing results. 2lbs off your bmi and looking good in a size 10.

grace really pleased this is working for you. I know what you mean about problem areas and how that's always the last place you lose it from. Mine is my thighs, saddlebags and arse. Top half used to be ok (pre kids) but the arse was always an issue.

dd is OK huge thanks to you all for wishing dd well. It's been a funny bug. Didn't upset her at all really. She was up chatting in the night after puking, same again after second puke - she just seemed really chilled out. Only thing that bothered her was needing a bath again.

I'm getting the washing sorted and have even resorted to using the tumble drier - I'm too stingy to use it normally but this is an emergency.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 24/01/2014 17:30

zed good idea on the progress report.

Pre Xmas 11 stone 12
Yesterday 11 stone 4.5

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/01/2014 17:52

Brilliant NSV there MrsF. Grin.

Yesterday I had on my gap jeans and when I bought them they were a bit snug. Then they fit for a while and then didn't again. Now they are too big and make me look fat. Down side of 2 stone loss (most clothes I have now are from 2012 when I was that much heavier, though one pair of jeans is 9 years old) is that a lot of my clothes are now too big. Reminds me when I was a teenager and bought baggy clothes to hide my (non existent) fatness but just served to make me look bigger. Now I don't know what to do about my clothes that are too big to wear without making me look bigger. I hate waste, I don't intend to get obese again, they can't be altered or worn with a belt so what do I do? What is everyone else doing about their too big clothes? I feel like I am throwing money away when I get rid of clothes.

Fabulous loss there WhenShe.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/01/2014 17:59

Now I am confused. I planned to fast Mon, Wed and Fri but have done Mon and Wed only as I am down and I made love soup. I don't fast on a Saturday or Sunday so now I am looking at 4 days of NFD on the trot. Does that sound okay to do or am I going to put loads od weight on in that time?

DorisAllTheDay · 24/01/2014 18:19

Well done, MrsF - great news there. Grace, that's a fabulous post. My problem area is also tummy. I'm already supposedly within a healthy range BMI, but I have a muffin top and a large pot belly, with a waist measurement that hovers around half my height, sometimes more and sometimes a tiny bit less. I'm passed the age of worrying too much about how I look at the weight I am now, but I know I'm carrying fat in the most unhealthy place and I hope that I'll shift at least some of it on this WOE.

Toffee, I'm a relative newcomer so I'm sure others will know better than me. But I can't see why you should put on weight if you don't overshoot your TDEE on your NFDs even if they are four consecutive days. Someone upthread a bit posted about their total 'calorie deficit' over the week, and I thought that was a good way to think about it. You might not want to weigh yourself on Sunday night though, just in case!

DorisAllTheDay · 24/01/2014 18:21

I meant to say, that's brilliant, whenshewasbad. I've still got a couple of pounds to go to reach my pre-Xmas weight, let alone lose any from there. Very impressed!

TalkinPeace · 24/01/2014 18:31

MrsFlorrick
Size ten at your height is slinky well done you. I hope your delightful husband compliments you - if he does not, kick him in the goolies shin from me.

Southeast they let you north of Watford ..... blimey.

Maketea I know you won't want to hear it, but you need to log your food on MFP on non fast days so you can check you are staying within your TDEE - UK restaurant pizzas are lethal things ; goodness knows what they put in the dough but Dominos I can tell by taste is chock full of sugar and salt so knackers your system.

I forgot to weigh in today (was showing off to my yoga teacher doing wacky balances on a bosu) BUT my waistband does not lie : feelin' good

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/01/2014 18:44

Thanks DorisAllTheDay. I have decided not to weigh myself every day any more as I want to enjoy feeling as I do now. I will weigh myself after my second fast day each week only.

whoop, whoop, TiP dances round the room

MrsFlorrick · 24/01/2014 18:48

Thanks TIP Grin and Toffee. And everyone else.

Toffee. Re clothes. My old pre DC clothes fit again so I charity shop my bigger ones. No loss as most of them were inexpensive high st ones.
All my old clothes are high end high st or designer classics so no need for new ones as such (other than the famous leather trouser Wink).

I guess if you are needing to invest in a whole new wardrobe too that's an expensive adventure.

Anything you can eBay? Or make a large enough collection and take to a boot sale to recoup some of your outlay for new wardrobe?

I've sold on eBay but not a mega experienced evayer. Just my maternity clothes and a few bits. Pretty much everything goes. You need to start auction at max £5 (for a big item) but best at 99p.
And take photos of it hanging up ironed on a nice wood hanger against a nice background (I have a beautiful exposed brick wall in the master bed room with Flos light fittings which looks very smart) a white wall will do too.

I've sold Jigsaw stuff, hobbs etc and it all goes quite well. Maternity stuff flew out of the door at massive prices but don't expect non maternity to be the same sadly.

Be prepared for a £150 item to sell for £15 to £20 max if virtually unworn.

No magic tricks sadly and it won't buy you an entire wardrobe but it will help.

And just think how happy someone will be with the stuff you send to the charity shop.

You can always supplement your new or in between wardrobe with eBay or charity shop bits too.

I have a friend who is car boot mad. Her entire brood are car boot kitted out. They all wear top labels and look amazing but it costs her very little and she resells all the time too. It's a hobby for her. It needs to be as its time consuming and you have to spend many a Saturday in the rain.

Her main tip is to buy bundles of clothes for sale in your size. Take home and pick out best bits you want and resell what you don't.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 24/01/2014 18:49

Well done Toffee - that is such a victory for you Grin

Megrim · 24/01/2014 18:50

Yup, Domino's uses sugar in its dough. My homemade dough uses only flour (I use one part white to two parts whole meal), olive oil, yeast, salt and water (1.5 tsp salt goes into the recipe to make two 12 inch pizza bases.

MrsFlorrick · 24/01/2014 18:51

TIP GrinGrin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/01/2014 19:23

BlushBlushBlush.

I have felt ashamed sometimes it has taken me so long (3 months to lose a stone, then 8 months of not really trying then 5 months to lose another stone) but then I think - correct me if I am wrong - that if it comes off slowly it is more likely to stay off.

MrsF - ebay scares me and tbh I am not sure anything would sell. My highest end item would be Wallis so nothing high end at all Grin!!

Is it true though that clothes that are a size too big will make you look bigger than you are?

This is the reason I haven't been buying anything new other than layering plain t-shirts as I need to lose another stone and don't want to waste money on clothes that won't fit for longer than a few weeks/months.

TalkinPeace · 24/01/2014 19:28

Toffee
Go back to the threads last summer and see how far you have come ...
am deeply impressed
because ( for those who have no idea what I'm on about )
to learn how to manage lifelong ED issues, while raising kids, while losing weight, while thinking up fab recipes, while working through a court case is IMHO pretty effing amazing ...

Clothes : tbh I just do Charity shops now : donate and buy
got a lovely pair of Phase Eight trousers for £4.50 and a Kaliko jacket for £3.75
I've even done "Oxfam dress rental" = buy something for £15, wear it and donate it back - cheaper than rental Wink

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/01/2014 19:47

I will have to investigate where the nearest charity shop is. Normally they go in bags to school for them to sell to raise money but that isn't an option at the kids current school. We do have skips/bags through thr door nearby for clothes but I have heard less than good things about what happens to money raised - doesn't go to the needy so haven't used them for a while.
