The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

FD for me too but already finding it hard. I didn't eat much yesterday (NFD) which doesn't help but nonetheless it's not physical hunger/grumbly tummy I'm feeling but a mental desire for food, the tactile sensation of it in my mouth. I'm only 2 lbs away from my goal weight but I've already shifted into maintenance mode of thinking so that's probably not helping.

I need to plan a long walk today I think. Just need to check when it will start to rain today.

LilyJoAndMe · 16/01/2014 10:12

Thanks for the helpful comments. Just hitting my hard patch- got to keep going for the next 3 hours then I'll be too busy to be able to do anything about food.
Lovely reading about 'Thought for the Day' . I laughed out loud at the thought of a 5:2er losing the plot at the end of a FD.
ShockOMG (stops laughing ) This could be me tonight !

Gluezilla · 16/01/2014 10:19

FD for me today .
Have a sore throat (thanks DH) and don't feel hungry so decided to go for it !
Mango and green tea for breakfast, need to get some soup?
? Miso for lunch as Im intrigued as to what it tastes like and then will have grilled sole and some veg tonight.
Bssh that's why I have some fruit - I enjoy the texture .

Dotty342kids · 16/01/2014 10:26

c'mon Bssbossh you can do this (motivational voice!)

mscnile that is really good, well done!

Second FD of the week for me and have already prepared dinner Grin. It's harissa coated chicken breasts with oven roasted squash and red onion. To have with a heap of salad too. Just got to get to 6.30pm to have achieved a nice 22hr fast!

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2014 10:37

I'm feeling but a mental desire for food, the tactile sensation of it in my mouth

yes... my mouth is a bit bored. Think I'm going to have a vigorous tooth-clean to distract it.

Gluezilla · 16/01/2014 10:55

Do most 5:2 ers fast completely during the day then? (gulp) don't think I can cope with that Sad

Am aiming for 100 cals breakfast 100 cals lunch and 300 dinner.
Green tea to drink .

MelanieCheeks · 16/01/2014 10:59

Phew, catching up with you lot is hard work!

I dont think I could completely fast, but I like to have little drinks to break up the day - a variety of herbal teas, flavoured black coffee (currently on a roast hazelnut one which smells gorgeous), and I ring the changes between Bovril, Marigold bouillon, oxo and marmite as a drink.

I use the Wakame miso soup sachets for lunch as that's handiest in the office.

Tonight I will be going for the shaksouka that I didnt make on Monday - eggs poached in a spicy tomato and pepper sauce.

Pickled onions and gherkins are my nibbly snacky saviours on a FD.

nouvellevag · 16/01/2014 11:08

I'm only a beginner, Gluezilla, but I'm shooting for 200 cals at lunch and 300 at dinner, with lots of water, black coffee and herbal tea through the day. And I can munch a celery stalk in an emergency, but then I love celery!

Hello

Could I join you please? I started 5:2 on Monday and have completed two fast days, both just scraping in under 500 cals.

I've been reading the threads and picking up on all the tips, including making the chorizo and butternut squash stew at the top of the recipe thread on Monday. It was delicious and I've now got another three portions in the freezer ready for fast day tea when dh and the dcs are having something more calorific!

I have to say I'm loving this WOE and feeling full of energy today (NFD), so much so that I'm quite disappointed not to be fasting again til Monday! Am considering doing a 16:8 on Saturday as dh and I are going out to eat Saturday night.

Anyway hope to join in regularly on the thread Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2014 11:35

*Ravenous] lol you on FDs !
Grin
Nouvelle That shall be you with an SV if you persevere a while.

Bssh Grit your teeth, that woman ^^.
I'm glad of the FD today: Yesterday's boxing class was cancelled at the last moment after I had already allowed myself the extra 20% over TDEE; then we went for pizza & salad instead - I ended about 1500 over TDEE !
OK, mini-FD Saturday required as well.

Gluezilla, you may need to ease your way into it to find what suits you, and to allow your body to adjust. Most of us seem to find that deferring eating till afternoon/evening and just drinking (plenty, including caffeinated drinks if you usually have them) during the day works for us. I'd suggest to start with you try holding off having breakfast for as long as you can - you may surprise yourself and find you get to lunchtime near as dammit before really feeling you need to eat. Don't worry if you really can't stick to the 500 for the first few FDs, don't feel like you've failed and then binge.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2014 11:44

To encourage everyone to exercise, I posted my gym photos

Cuckoo, MrsF Why don't I see your gym photos ^^

Gluezilla · 16/01/2014 11:45

I don't think I can go without breakfast - I feel sick if I don't have something and I have to take my medication in the morning with food.

I guess we are all different - the thought of not having anything during the day makes me feel miserable and that's not the point !
I will keep to 100 cal breakfast and lunch and 300 dinner for now and see how it goes.

Eatriskier · 16/01/2014 11:45

glue when I first started coming on these threads I thought all these people who fasted and saved their calories until the end of the day were nuts. But then it made me brave enough to try to eliminate breakfast and only a few more fasts before I realised that for me it was easier to join these nutters and save my calories for an evening meal.

Eatriskier · 16/01/2014 11:47

Cross posts - DH is more of a brekkie eater than dinner eater and started out using most of his calories in the morning, basically doing a reverse 24hr fast

lubeybooby · 16/01/2014 11:54

Caved and having my FD lunch

tenderstem broccoli, asparagus and two carrots... all cooked and in a 'soup' made with bovril. Yum. 63 cals

Gluezilla · 16/01/2014 11:58

Eat I am a real breakfast fan so I might do the reverse fast .
Thanks for your suggestionSmile.

I often have big breakfast, cooked lunch and soup/salad in the evening .

LilyJoAndMe · 16/01/2014 12:04

1 more hour to go before my crisis time is over .

Not starving, but worrying about how I 'm going to feel later on. I hope I'll be able to concentrate properly on my work and that I won't get a headache . I won't be able to eat until about 11pm, but I sipping on hit drinks as suggested.
Good luck to all other fasters today.
Smile

Dotty342kids · 16/01/2014 12:39

Welcome vodkagirl, sounds like all going well so far. Nothing to stop you throwing another fast day into the mix if you want to you know Smile, just as long as they're not consecutive fast days. I occasionally did a Saturday one and as awful as that sounds, weekend days are often busy so going through to teatime wasn't that hard, though I didn't necessarily restrict to 500 cals Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2014 12:47

Glue - if you've got to have meds in the morning with food then obviously you need to find a different approach - it's all about finding what works for you. Smile

Gluezilla · 16/01/2014 12:54

Yes Errol
Im reversing Grin

nouvellevag · 16/01/2014 12:55

I do think everyone's different. I actually feel bloody great today on no breakfast, but DH can't do that at all, so he's having eggs for breakfast on FDs, banana or something for lunch and then I'm doing us a ~300kcal supper.

AngieM2 · 16/01/2014 13:01

I am NOT feeling the FD love today. Have been to the gym, just got home and have decorating to do so a very busy afternoon but I'm just not wanting to play! And no deferring as tomorrow I have a big girly day out with champagne brekkie and a show in the evening that involves a VERY slinky dress. God get me through the next 9 hours to bedtime.
