The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Morning everyone

Lilyjoandme sending you lots of positive vibes and PMA for today.

I think this parenting lark is so hard at times. As the children get older I don't think that worrying about them gets less but that you I worry about different things! Also it's amazing how 2 boys can come from the same gene pool have same guidance but be sooooo very different. My 11 yr old runs rings round the 17 yr ok. I also feel a lot of the time that I get it wrong so you're not on your own toffee

Well done Darnley on getting through yesterday. I had a FD yesterday and was really chuffed was at 20hrs before I knew it and then finished the day off with a fab spicy prawn stir fry and was under 500 cals. Had SV this morning down 2.25lbs taking it to 8lbs from NYD. Now just need to stay within TDEE and not go silly. Really like your idea Bssh of mixing up the TDEE over the week so you can have a no counting day on Saturday. Do you think that would be ok for a newbie to do?

Have fun today wether you're FD or not. hopeful hope "D"H sees the error of his ways.

Hmmm must check for typos before posting!

Happy to report that DH has seen sense and we are friends again. I know we still need to clear a few things up but not today.

I just had a sleep and feel much better though it has made me feel a bit hungry. So I am sipping a lovely vanilla tea.

I had some soup, a slice of toast and some cottage cheese for lunch. Very filling and satisfying. I don't know what we're having for dinner but I have about 300 cals left. It will have loads of vege . I might try a cauliflower pizza base with vegies and a bit of bocconcini . I have a recipe somewhere.

How's the fasting going Lilyjo ?Hang in there. You will be glad you did.

CinammonGirl · 16/01/2014 07:48

Second FD here and not feeling hungry this morning! Going to try and make it til about 1:30pm then have some soup (I have to pop to the supermarket for a couple of things so don't want to be mega hungry - not a great idea to go today but its the only day I have the car!) Scrambled eggs for tea with a little grated cheese if I have enough cals. Positive vibes and good luck to all of today's fasters! Thanks

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 16/01/2014 07:55

Hi I did my first FD yesterday but by the time I got home from college I had a stonking headache and was in bed by 9.30! I ended up having less than 500 calories (not worked it out yet)

I am NFD today but only have £10 until Wednesday and the food I already have in (which isn't very much)!

Will drink plenty of water and hope for the best!

curveballs · 16/01/2014 08:09

Morning. FD for me today, and already in a grumpy mood - why is getting everyone ready in the morning such a chore? I will not let this deter me.

Bought some miso soup for my lunch, but now scared it will rank after some of the posts I have read. So glad I read them now and have a spare leek cuppa soup in case I hate it!

Hope you all have a good day!

Lily Long days at work whilst fasting require plenty of water and low cal hot drinks that last ages. My own favourite is hot water with lemon. You can do it and remember, it's nearly the weekend.

Good luck to everyone else today too Smile

Southeastdweller · 16/01/2014 08:16

Postman Sorry for not replying earlier but yes I'm much happier in my new place and pretty much settled in. It's more expensive than where I lived before but worth it.

Have things at home calmed down now with your eldest DC?

MorrisZapp · 16/01/2014 08:18

Miso soup, no thanks. I'm all about a big mug of beefy Bovril for ten calories :)

Jobyloo · 16/01/2014 08:18

Have only just worked out that I can set my daily net calories to what I want on MFP! So set it today for 10% less of TDEE. I can eat with confidence and not worry about having to do mental maths... it's the small things like this that makes it that bit easier for me to stay in control Grin

mscnile · 16/01/2014 08:24

Hopeful glad you and dh are friends again!

Down to 10st 10 today, lowest since being a teenager I think Grin looking forward to my meal out later.

Good luck to fasters today, remember, you can have it tomorrow!

curveballs · 16/01/2014 08:30

Morris I tried bovril on my FD last Thursday, I did not like :-(

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2014 08:43

Congrats on your new pad, SouthEast. Sounds like you should be very happy there.

Glad you and DH friends again hopeful NFD here and I've had a couple of boiled eggs with buttered soldiers. Feeling tired after yesterday but going to walk the 40 mins up hill to work to try and get myself moving. Got 2 nights out this weekend - both 40th birthdays! - so gonna try and keep calories low today so I can get good and drunk this weekend! Happy fasting or not fasting everyone!

somewherebecomingrain · 16/01/2014 09:08

Hola! Marking place

RavenousRunner · 16/01/2014 09:28

FD today and already an NSV - DS1 looked at his two slices of toast with peanut butter and honey and shouted 'SEEDED BREAD! DISGUSTING! I'M NOT EATING THIS!!!'. I didn't eat them. I gave them to his skinny-as-a-rail little brother, thus not having to make his usual second round (four slices of toast a morning and he's still hungry by 11, he got my sister's amazing metabolism). Made DS1 scrambled eggs instead and had some water. Yeehaw.

That said, now at work freezing cold with rumbling stomach. Come on coffee!

RavenousRunner · 16/01/2014 09:30

MrsFlorrick maybe one for the exercise thread, but have you tried pilates mat work for your stomach? I did it for about a year a long time ago and it not only sorted out all the wobbliness, my muscles have never gone back to being slack even when I do no exercise. Maybe something about training yourself to keep them engaged most of the time? Anyway I highly recommend it and it works very quickly. I used a book and did it at home (pre-youtube days, frighteningly!) so no need for classes.

lubeybooby · 16/01/2014 09:37

FD for me today

RavenousRunner · 16/01/2014 09:38

Anyone hear 'Thought for the Day' on Radio4 this morning? It was about IF/5:2 and made me laugh very hard. Apparently fasting is good for your soul because it reminds you you're not just flesh and blood (no, I am also a massive pit of hunger) and makes you more empathetic as you contemplate your fragility. Clearly this woman has never been near me at 5 o'clock on an FD, when I would mug an old lady for her last Werther's Original.

BsshBossh · 16/01/2014 09:39

Jobyloo the mixing TDEE across the week is something TiP talks about alot but nonetheless I've been doing it for 2 years (even pre-5:2 when I was simply calorie counting). It makes for a flexible week and makes sense if you socialise more on certain days (for me that's the weekend). But BigChoc and others also mix up TDEEs. Certainly even newbies can do it (I did it right from the start of my weightloss journey in Feb 2012).

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2014 09:45

FD for me - one cup of tea and quite a bit of water, some of it hot so far.

Morning all! Well done on that weigh in mscnile. :) Dreaming that one day that'll be me...

It's my second FD today and I'm definitely less hungry than I was this time on Tuesday. I realise it's only half nine and I have plenty of time to fade, but right now I'm feeling pretty positive. Looking forward to dinner - going to bake two flat mushrooms each for DH and me, measuring out some olive oil to brush on them so I can be accurate about the calories, and plonk them on top of a salad with all their mushroomy juices. Mm.
