The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Think about tomorrow, Angie - not just eat but drink champagne!

NSV - Hello hipbones! Knew you were lurking in there somewhere. Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 16/01/2014 13:09

Hello everyone

My Wii tip yesterday was it is harder to lose weight from eating in the evening so best to have bigger meals morning and lunch. This goes against what I think would work for me but I might try it if I get stuck again.

FD today. Had just water. Went to do the food shop and DH wanted pizza so I treated myself to a butternut squash risotto that is 346 calories iirc. I knew pizza would seem like a nice meal but I would feel too full up after and would probably set off the munchies.

Feeling anxious about DS2 too but have spoken to MIL who has given me good tips to deal with him if anything bad happens again.

AngieM2 · 16/01/2014 13:09

Thanks Errol, I find most of this WOE is in the head. I can have it tomorrow!

curveballs · 16/01/2014 13:10

Before I make this miso soup, I work on an open plan office, with kitchen in it. Is it going to smell???

AngieM2 · 16/01/2014 13:10

In fact I'm going to cheer myself up with some fizz.....sparkling water here I come.

CinammonGirl · 16/01/2014 13:13

AngieM2 you can do it! FD for me here too. Just think about tomorrow, drink a big glass of water, stick on your favourite music and get stuck in with your decorating :) sending you positive vibes, you can make it!

MrsFlorrick · 16/01/2014 13:18

Big choc. Gym photos? Shock Wow. I'm so behind on my MNing!!

You'll have bear with me 24 hrs or so.

Toffee. I'm very interested to know more about the best time to eat big meal. Off to google.

Not2bObvious · 16/01/2014 13:24

Checking in, same as everyone, can't keep up with pace if post but just popping in on fd2 for this week.
Going really good so far, did a JM workout(banish fat, boost metabolism - really good) on waking, and just finished a 30 min brisk walk. Time to break my fast! Hungry but not ravenous. All that water/clenching/no snacking must be working Grin
Wi tomorrow morning after ignoring the scales all week. Here's hoping!

RavenousRunner · 16/01/2014 13:39

Toffee and MrsF - isn't it the standard advice to eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a something, and dinner like a pauper? I always thought it was true, because you're active during the day so burn off what you eat, whereas a big meal before bed just sits there while you snooze. However it only works if you have the self-control not to eat a lot in the evenings, which I don't. If I save up calories during the day I'm bound to eat less overall. I tend to eat a fairly big breakfast (maybe two slices of buttered toast, two eggs plus a banana before my run), a very small lunch like soup, and a good-sized dinner. It seems to work for me.

RavenousRunner · 16/01/2014 13:42

Only the banana before the run - if I ran after two eggs I would be very very sick. Ick.

NotAsTired · 16/01/2014 13:59

Had to abandon FD2 today as I feel so poorly. But did manage 19 hours of fasting though.

Mumraathenoisylion · 16/01/2014 14:00

on a fast day here too. I'm really happy with myself as I had a horrible experience earlier in a baby class with 7 others and one of them was my ex's wife (he was violent and abusive). I could quite easily have given up and gone straight to starbucks for a calorific hot chocolate but I didn't....

I came home for my two pieces of ryvita with cottage cheese and I'm looking forward to my weight watchers beef casserole later....even with both of these I'm still under 400 calories.

zedzedzed · 16/01/2014 14:23

mumraa what a fecking nightmare, well done even more than usual!

FD number 2 here for the week here, good so far, just mint tea and black coffee and water, saving calories for salmon fillet with ginger/chilli/teriyake and thai flavour cous-cous, then a WW dessert yoghurt for pud and that should bring me in under 400 (saving the other 100 for later in case I get night ravenous like last FD and can't sleep).

DH is doing it again too! YAY!

The night is way too long once the kids are in bed for me to reverse fast and eat all my grub for brekkie...I like to sit down, relax, eat dinner with DH (even if it's measly). But it's great that this WOE is so flexible for people.

RavenousRunner · 16/01/2014 14:25

Ended up with a salad with tuna for lunch, coming back from a meeting and supervisor said we should pick up something. Couldn't eat nothing without explaining why...now I'm really hungry. Ugh. I don't like having so little control!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 16/01/2014 14:28

RavenousRunner - Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dinner like a pauper is the phrase I have heard.

NotAsTired- hope you feel better soon.

I feel fine atm with only having had one large beaker of water all day. I am cold though. Going to leave in half an hour for the kids then home to cook them pizza and veg. Not doing garlic bread - why torment myself?!

almostthereagain · 16/01/2014 14:40

Hi can I join please? Have been successful on 5:2 before but relaxed quite a lot over Christmas & reining in a bit is not doing it (although dh almost back to pre Christmas weightHmm Think I need the discipline of logging on to kick start myself with fasts again. I hope to lose 7lbs & tone/fitten up too. Had lost 1 1/2 stone, but put some on over Christmas as well as little exercise since the end of summer. Well done to all, will read back through the posts later, got to go on school runSmile

NotAsTired · 16/01/2014 14:44

toffee thanks.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2014 15:07

Toffee, if you're cold have a hot drink - even if its only hot water. Apart from ingesting it, you'll warm your hands.

I'm enjoying an illicit coke zero at the moment... doesn't half cause burps on an empty stomach! Grin

BsshBossh · 16/01/2014 15:12

Goodness, today's fast is hard. I'm not hungry or feeling faint, just feeling like greedy.

I can eat it tomorrow, I can eat it tomorrow, I can eat it tomorrow

MelanieCheeks · 16/01/2014 15:28

How on earth can there be 70 calories in one digestive biscuit!!!!

(No, reader, I did not eat themit)

Dotty342kids · 16/01/2014 15:28

Yup BsshBossh you can, and it'll taste great (tomorrow!) too Grin

hasn't just eaten a small piece of fruit cake at all

I'm finding it really hard today as well - speculating that I should stay at work late enough that I can grab a soup or something, as if I go home and have to watch DH eating a nice dinner with wine the odds of me only having a tiny portion with water are next to nil.

Miso soup soon I think - I love it and the saltiness is a huge help.

lubeybooby · 16/01/2014 15:40

bovril is my savior today

and the 'I can have it tomorrow'

and knowing I have a guilt free weekend ahead - get in!

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2014 15:45

drat, I meant to get some Bovril in asda just now. Did get some more miso soup (the wakame sachets, that's all they had). Haven't felt like it yet though (full of coke... amazing tummy rumbles, good thing I work alone!)
