The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Thanks bumbums, will keep a look at for the noodles.

I agree graceholl about the guilt on NFDs. I had one can of lager tonight with my dinner and I'm well within TDEE, but did feel a bit regretful. It's silly really because the reason why this woe appealed so much to me is that I could enjoy the things I didn't want to give up. I suppose its just about your head around it. (Still, didn't feel any guilt about the cheese in my omelette though ha ha)

Hope you are ok toffee x

MrsFlorrick · 15/01/2014 20:05

(((((Toffee))))). You poor sausage.

Bigchoc. Once I've kicked this current cold away, ill be back over on your exercise thread.

I am going to go for it in a massive way! I have an incentive. We've booked our holiday and unlike last year where I was constantly asked when I was due or mistaken for a whale shark by other snorkellers, I want to look smoking hot and fit. And not a wobble fat 40ish lady.

So yeah Bigchoc I seriously need you to help me. It's mostly my stomach. Legs are good and not wobbly arms are excellent and quite toned. Backside needs work but my stomach is a fecking disaster!Shock

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 15/01/2014 20:05

Hugs for toffee I know how you feel, I spend half my life wondering if I've done the right thing parenting wise. The other half is spent realising I fucked it up.

this too will pass has to be one of my favourite mantras to get me through tricky times.

It's quite a good day for me, the scales say 11 stone 6 which is still far too big but it is a loss and means I am officially no longer overweight

My BMI is now 25, aim is to lose another stone and get it to 23.

mummytowillow · 15/01/2014 20:15

HI everyone

Sorry I've not been around for ages, I'm a rubbish 5:2 friend!

I'm on my 4th FD tomorrow and need to ask a weigh day question please.

I started this WOE on a Thursday with a FD, so do I do my weighing in on a Thursday before FD or Friday morning a after FD?

Well done to all my fellow 5:2ers,your all doing great xx

Slightly random question but am going shopping tomorrow to stock up on FD essentials - could anyone tell me what miso soup tastes of? Have never had it before!

TalkinPeace · 15/01/2014 20:54

cinnamongirl
do not buy miso soup
buy a pot of miso paste
a packet of knorr vegetable stock post
and a plant of fresh chives

then make your own WONDERFUL miso soup for a fraction of the price and a multiple of the flavour

CinammonGirl · 15/01/2014 21:19

Ooooh ok thanks guys I will try and find miso paste tomorrow!

mscnile · 15/01/2014 21:56

Busy afternoon/evening so haven't read thread yet
End of FD check in at 450 cals, bit of a headache so off to drink water and sleep, then weigh first thing
Out for NFD dinner tomorrow with some lovely friends Smile

Will try to catch up with thread in bed!

Chocupid · 15/01/2014 21:57

Hmmm, Miso paste... Will also have to try.

I finally had a successful fast day... First for ages... Yippee!

Well done to all who got there today!
Mine only happened as yesterday was another fail.

Hugs toffee chin up.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 15/01/2014 22:10

Thanks grace BMI still needs work but I plan to get there.

I once tried miso soup at a Japanese restaurant, I was on a table with 12 people, every single one of us declared it to be so vile it was undrinkable. Any chance the chef had an odd recipe? I've never tried the stuff again since that night.

Southeastdweller · 15/01/2014 22:15

Miso soup is a divisive thing and I agree with tip that it's better to make your own but if you like them and you're out and about in London or Oxford on a FD then Itsu sells the best ones though they're a bit salty.

lubeybooby · 15/01/2014 22:41

really enjoyed my NFD today, took it right up to TDEE thanks to celebrating with a friend & alcohol involved. Definitely ready to tackle my second FD tomorrow. Feeling positive. Lots of fruit/herb tea in, water, miso soup, it it will be tuna with loads of salad for dinner.

Jimjamatron · 15/01/2014 23:11

Hi everybody. Just checking is as I didn't post on my fast day. I didn't find my first FD back as bad as I was expecting. Think I had about 550 cals in all. I enjoyed the non bloaty and empty feeling this morning- not felt like that since well before Xmas!!

It was a NFD today and though I feel full have only had 1400 cals. Probably just as well as on Friday I am having a takeaway at a friends house And may go over tdee (1777) a little.

Good luck anyone fasting tomorrow- I am going to do a 1000 cal mini fast as my next available day to fast is Monday.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/01/2014 23:16

Food hates:

  • Miso soup, tastes like fish vomit
  • Those godawful zero cal noodles, taste like geriatric fish droppings

Errol Obviously a zero-cal FD needs to be LOF, but a 500-cal LOF is just a personal preference, probably no advantage for 5:2.
For me at least, taking shake cartons plus a cup of veg juice:

  • requires no preparation and can be consumed whenever I have time
  • gives exact calorie count
  • very low carb, so I have a day of low insulin levels
  • unexciting, so no temptation to have extra
  • rests my tum from solids
The Mattson study used the same shakes, probably for similar reasons.

Marking my place. It's a FD here for me. Feeling very tired after a very unsettled night. I slept in my DS's bed as I had a row with my arse of a "D"H.

Despite my tiredness I am planning to stick to the fast day, otherwise I probably won't get another chance until Monday, and I's really like to do two this week. I'll have a nap later, which I am sure will help.

Toffee, don't beat yourself up about parenting. It is just the hardest job going. From your posts you sound like a really great mum. I too have the mantra,"this too shall pass", but not so sure it will work today with DH. I am just so tired of his childish ways and lack of communication skills. Seriously, you'd think after 23 years of marriage he'd have learnt how to talk to me? I imagine he'd say the same about me! Hmm It will blow over I suppose, but in the meantime I feel tired and cranky. Doesn't help that it is TOTM soon...

That's probably why I went over TDEE by about a hundred yesterday. I made a banana cake with cream cheese frosting. Who knew it would have SO many calories!!!Shock T'was very yummy though and I am amazed at how full I felt after eating it. I guess if I hadn't also had a G&T at the end of the day I might have stayed closer to TDEE. But I am not going to obsess about it.

It's just a bit of a light bulb moment : cake really does have a shitload of calories, so all that cake over the years has probably helped me pile on the weight! Cake is now for special occasions, not every time I meet someone for a cuppa!

Happy FD for those fasting today. Thanks

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2014 00:13

Sorry to hear about your DH in knobhead mode, hopeful.
At least with your DCs you can hope they'll grow out of it !

annielewis · 16/01/2014 00:24

Marking place. Still here but unable to get online much at mo.

vvviola · 16/01/2014 04:07

Already at my 500 today thanks to inhaling 3 slices of bread while I was making the DC their afternoon snack, before I realised what I was doing. Hmm Lunchtime til 5 really is my danger time, I had managed til 2 before I had lunch (and getting my 16:8 as a result) but I really struggle in the afternoon.

I'm not able to skip dinner as otherwise I'm really cranky at bedtime for the kids but I'll try to keep the calorie count as low as I can by skipping the rice at dinner and loading my plate with veg instead.

Next FD not til Monday (when DD2 is at daycare for the morning)

Breadandwine · 16/01/2014 05:50

Hi vvviola

Not a good idea to eat bread on a fast day, I'm afraid. It just kickstarts the appetite and uses up all your allowance.

If you must eat something, have some carrot sticks - or my favourite, a raw mushroom or two. Very few calories and very filling.

Then you can have all your calories in the evening. I used to have a small baked potato with a huge veg curry - and I was always stuffed!

LilyJoAndMe · 16/01/2014 06:15

Morning all,
FD for me here. I'm nervous about it as it's going to be a really long day today. I'm finishing really late and will be very tired tonight .
I think my hardest times will be be late morning and early afternoon . Then I'm going to be at my quietest. But, I've got lots of work to do and I'll be on my own.I'll really need to concentrate but I'm scared I'll be tempted then.
Anyhow, good start to my day. Got up and did 20 minutes of exercise. Now sipping on tea and going to put some music on. Smile
So, thinking about you all. Can I have some encouragement from any of you today please ?

Darnley · 16/01/2014 06:26

NFD for me today. Got brought yesterday, although felt more hungry than the first two FDs.

Pizza tonight, so will only have soup for lunch. Will try and resist the temptation to weigh in, but it will be hard.

frenchfancy · 16/01/2014 07:01

mummytowillow weigh yourself on Friday morning after a fast day. That way the figures are not skewed by your body processing food, and you are furthest away from any weekend bloating. (well that is what I do anyway)

vvviola · 16/01/2014 07:08

Yep breadandwine I can see how it's a problem.

I think next FD I'll pre-prepare some veg for such moments
