The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Hello.

I'm new to 5:2 and fairly new to MN. I'm on my first fast day. Planning to do Mondays and Thursday every week.

I haven't eaten anything yet today. I'm going to snack on fruit this afternoon and then have a couple of poached eggs with ham, tomatoes and wholemeal bread tonight. My tummy is grumbling but I feel fine. I think the evening will be the hardest. I hope I'm not so hungry that I can't sleep.

Eatriskier · 20/01/2014 12:52

Oh elr that's awful, and here's me moaning about not being warm enough with my heating going. If internet hugs can warm you here's a big one from me
((((((hug))))))

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/01/2014 13:05

Afternoon everyone.

Highlights today - weight up (ignoring and not letting it get to me but will ask a question later). Kids delivered to school. Bit of shopping bought. Mouse disposed off courtesy of neighbour who came over seconds after I found it. Washing mostly done. All ironing done. Letter done. Dinner planned as fasting - roasted red peppers with feta with home made ish coleslaw on the side. FD going okay. Won't have anything at all until dinner otherwise the munchies are set off.

Yesterday we walked a lot, I ate lunch (chips while out) dinner (roast chicken, etc) , 2 slices of marmite on toast, and when will the results of all my walking translate to weight down? I guess I am asking how long it takes for damage to show with an increase in weight and progress to show after FD and exercise?

I plan to not weigh again until all my FD are done this week. I plan to do three this week for a change.

almostthereagain · 20/01/2014 13:07

Don't know how all of you with little ones do it I lived on bread & pasta when mine were little! Big well done to youSmile

TalkinPeace · 20/01/2014 13:07

((( ELR ))) you poor thing with no heating.
Bundle up warm and find a sunny corner of the house to sit in.
Eatriskier DH bought me a pair of "yoga socks" for Christmas and messing about I put them on after my bath yesterday. Hole moley fanoly did they keep my toes warm. Splendid things ...

Another one who is fasting today.
Better get on with my housework after my morning at the gym.

Megrim · 20/01/2014 13:10

Hello everyone, I've been lurking on this thread for the last couple of weeks, having started 5:2 just after the New Year (well 4:3 really, to get my metabolism kick started).

Currently doing FD on Sundays and Mondays, and another on Thursdays. I'm generally managing about 600 cals on an FD, using MFP to log on FDs only, and lots of exercise (8 mile walk this morning for instance). Surprised at how well I'm feeling and sleeping - I have early starts (5am) on Tuesdays and Fridays and don't usually sleep well on those nights knowing that I have to be up early, now I'm finding I sleep right through until the alarm.

Thanks for all the tips on here - lots of great ideas (although not sure I can bring myself to try miso soup from some of the descriptions).

curveballs · 20/01/2014 13:22

Hi megrim. I bought some miso soup before reading some of the descriptions and was then dreading it. Was pleasantly surprised when I did try it though

MazzleDazzle · 20/01/2014 13:25

ELR & eatriskier I am cold too! I just can't take heat. Boiler is playing up, heating is on and off and hot water is few and far between. Getting fixed tomorrow though. Does anyone else get really cold after a work out?

Welcome to all first time/nearly new fasters! Like Bread said, it's the NFDs that become the hard ones!

On both Sat and Sun I was roughly 400 cals under TDEE and feel great about it. (Obv. I didn't get round to making one of Toffee's recipes!). I am hoping that if I get my NFD calorie intake under control I can go down to 5:2 rather than 4:3. Usually I do 2 x NFD followed by 1 x FD.

Skipped breakfast today and contemplated a fast, but just didn't feel like it. Just had 1/2 can of Heinz 5 Beanz on 1 slice of toast, which was delicious.

Planning on baking said cheese and date bread with youngest DC and my wee niece and later on, trying out my new Raclette! Bought Raclette cheese from Lidls over Christmas time and its past its date, but it looks fine. My DH is a stickler for sell by dates. He binned half of my dry spices Angry. He doesn't even bloody cook!

zedzedzed · 20/01/2014 13:25

megrim hiya, glad you've un-lurked, I'm new too!

I'm not sure back to back fasts are a great idea, I think your body's supposed to recover for at least a day in between? I'm sure one of the old hands here can be more specific, and it's tricky to get it right what with work commitments etc.

Hope it all goes well.

Marrow · 20/01/2014 13:28

Can I join you? I have three stone to lose and have been inspired by the inspirational thread! I started 5:2 last week so today is my third fast day. I weighed myself this morning and I lost 5.5lbs last week so that has been a massive incentive to keep going. I'm struggling a bit today though so just about to take the dog for a walk so I can stay away from temptation and burn off some calories.

Dotty342kids · 20/01/2014 13:30

oh ELR poor you! Is there a plan / timescale for getting it fixed. When we had the coldest winter for years (3yrs ago I think), we were without heating and hot water for nine days and I remember only too well the bone chilling horror of it!
Hope you can get to a neighbours for a hot bath or something?

MrsFlorrick · 20/01/2014 13:33

Hi Marrow. Welcome. Grin

5.5lbs already! Wow that's a cracking start.

Anything you want to ask about 5:2, lots of excellent advice here.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/01/2014 13:37

Welcome Marrow!

curveballs · 20/01/2014 13:46

Welcome marrow, and congrats on the great start!

Just wanted to thank everyone for helping me get through this morning. I know now I can manage the rest of the day. Soup was filling and cold tablets definitely worked a treat.

I've just two and half hours left at work, then we have a new estate agent coming to value our house (current estate agent is hopeless), so it's going to be dinner time before I know it! Smile

zedzedzed · 20/01/2014 13:47

yay curve!

I just have to get through toddler spaghetti-meatball lunch and I'm on the road home to FD dinner.

MaeveWest · 20/01/2014 13:50

quick question to mayu noodle users! I had those 15 calorie a pack slim noodles as part of my lunch, but after I ate them I noticed that the fibre is "indigestable". That's what it says on the packet! 3.5g of indigestable fiber! is that bad? it doesn't sound good. But i@ve eaten them now. And googling them, they seem to be part of an asian diet, and lower cholesterol.

Megrim · 20/01/2014 13:50

Hiya Zed, the Michael Mosley answer is that you can do FDs either consecutively or non-consecutively, whichever works best. So far, I'm finding doing Sunday and Monday and then again on a Thursday works well for me. I'm also officially weighing in once a week, first thing Sunday morning (ie after two NFDs). I have about 25 lbs to lose ideally, although I would happily settle for a 21 lb loss (stone and a half).

My jeans feel looser already Smile

MaeveWest · 20/01/2014 13:52

two days in a row! wow.

I do monday and wednesdays and that kicks it off early in the week with one day to recover in between. I work wednesday and managed to do it at work.

Tiredemma · 20/01/2014 13:53

lost another 2lbs this week. Thanks for motivating me. Smile

mscnile · 20/01/2014 14:30

soooo cold and soooo hungry Sad

clarinetV2 · 20/01/2014 14:32

Just checking in with the Monday fasters. I'm making a really determined effort today to 1) drink lots of water and 2) not use up my calories too early in the day. I've had about a litre and a half of water so far which I think is about two and a half pints, and that's in addition to two cups of tea. I'm struggling, though, with stopping myself from eating. I've had about 200 calories so far, and as I need to work late tonight I've brought my tea-time meal with me - cold meat and salad. I'm trying not to eat it until 5.00, but it's hard. I keep finding myself counting down the hours till bedtime and hopefully some blissful oblivion not thinking about being hungry! curve, I'm loving the positive attitude - I hope your new estate agent is more satisfactory than the existing one. My last move I made the classic mistake of going with the agent who gave me the highest valuation, and the house was on the market for ages with no interest.

Well done to Marrow, Tiredemma and everyone else who's lost weight/inches this week. I'm off to have another glass of water.

clarinetV2 · 20/01/2014 14:34

Crossed with you, mscnile. I feel your pain. Really, I do. I'm trying hard to make myself believe that the lovely glass of water I've just poured myself is the thing I most want right now. Confused

TalkinPeace · 20/01/2014 14:44

how to deal with cold : JUMP AROUND !
or do some manic tidying or cleaning : exercise warms you up
and fasted exercise burns visceral fat even faster!

mscnile · 20/01/2014 14:44

Hi clarinet we can help each other through! I've had some tomato and basil soup and a few cups of coffee so far, will have another hot drink once I've picked DTs up from school in half an hour. I usually fast on Mondays and do fine with it, I think it's the cold that's getting to me, plus I'm working at home this afternoon and I'm not usually here when fasting. I'll be out all day tomorrow so will do at least 16:8 I think.

I really need to do some work!

mscnile · 20/01/2014 14:45

TIP I went for a run at 1pm but despite this am now frozen.
