The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Morning. Another one here who slept terribly but I'll get through today with caffeine. So I see zed, toffee, dotty, curve, maniple, hooray and biscuits are also fasting today. Who else is in the Monday crew?

Jobyloo · 20/01/2014 08:11

Morning all, am joining the Monday fasters. Curve & Zed you can do this but it's amazing how tiredness throws you off kilter. Planning on LOF until 8pm then a bowl of last nights stew.

Hopeful thanks! yes can see that my stomach is flatter but I guess it's the retraining of the mind that's taking the time. The habit of jumping on and off the scales I will break but I guess it's just going to take time! Saying that haven't jumped on this morning and have no intentions until the end of the week. Think I perhaps need to move my focus to other numbers and look at measurements Smile as well as remembering that I'm in this for the long haul and the health benefits not just numbers Grin

bluestar some peeps have reported headaches on fast days, I did for the first couple but made sure I drank plenty and the oxo cube drink does the trick for me! I tend to have one 4-5pm at my most vulnerable time. good luck on your first FD and let us know how you get on!

zedzedzed · 20/01/2014 08:14

Yeah curve I've NEVER managed to do that 'nap-when-they-nap' thing! I always end up doing laundry/dishes/emails etc.

And my Aunt's getting results from a possibly cancerous investigation today...so am pretty on edge anyway. A nice solid fast would be a good rock to cling to. And if it's bad news, we'll deal with that too. Gulp.

Go Monday crew! Under 12hrs left, which is only 4 lots of 3hrs and 3hrs flies by; working, cleaning, walking, shopping, changing bums and...bang! Another 3hrs have gone by. And if we just make it till after lunch/baby naptime we're half way there already!

zedzedzed · 20/01/2014 08:17

Yes, good luck bluestar and any other First Ever Fasters...
or any secretly Lurking First Ever Fasters? Come out come out wherever you are!

Dotty342kids · 20/01/2014 08:21

Gawd, I seem to have put 3lbs on over the last few days. Far too much over indulging on cakes, kids sweets cupboard and snacky things I think.
Fast day today and got to make a concerted effort to rein in my NFD habits. I feel a return to MFP is necessary Smile
Check in with all the Monday fasters later

ErrolTheDragon · 20/01/2014 08:27

FD for me - have had my obligatory tea first thing, but then when I got back from taking DD to the bus-stop wanted something hot and didn't fancy any of my herbal teas or plain hot water. So I infused about half a teaspoon of Chinese 5 spice powder for about 5 minutes, then strained it through muslin - that hit the spot. Smile If you fancy trying it, note you want pure 5 spice mix not the Schwartz powder which is full of salt.

HandMini · 20/01/2014 08:41

Morning all, I'm joining the Monday fasters. I think this is my 6th fast day, so I'm about three weeks in.

I'm not weighing myself (no scales) but for the first time in YEARS I wore an old shirt at the weekend that I love and didn't feel myself popping out of it around the belly, so I am holding on to that as my fast day inspiration.

Having a ginger and lemon tea for breakfast. Has anyone tried Slimsticks? They are 1/3 off in Boots and I am considering it...

Eatriskier · 20/01/2014 08:45

Where are my slippers? I'm thermalled up, the heating is on, I've done my mega run and cycle session, its not even 9 and my toes feel like they're about to fall off. This does not bode well for the rest of today's FD

BetsyBell · 20/01/2014 09:00

Handmini Well done on the NSV!

I had to look up 'slimsticks' - still don't know what they are but they look pointless. If you want a satisfying drink beyond tea/coffee/water/herbal teas etc etc you could try a bit of stock (eg Marigold Bouillon - 1 tsp in hot water is 12 calories, £2 for an entire tub), miso soup at around 30 calories per cup/small bowl, a few quid for a jar of paste that will last ages... all options that are less calorific than one of those 40cal sachets.

Aim for real food options where you can. This is not a quick fix but a way to change your eating for ever.

Fasting here today and COLD. I'm mustering up enthusiasm to get out and do an epic cycle ride. Maybe some coffee first...

BetsyBell · 20/01/2014 09:01

(When I say 'epic' I mean a 6mile cycle to the shops and back, not particularly epic really Grin )

Dotty342kids · 20/01/2014 09:06

eatriskier, lots of layers needed today! I am about to go to zumba then will leap into a hot shower and put on as many clothes as is possible Smile
Betsy sounds pretty epic in my book! Make sure you've got some good gloves, it's freeeeezing out there.

HandMini · 20/01/2014 09:07

Sounds pretty epic to me!

Will check out the contents of Slimsticks before purchasing. I do like miso soup and find that or Sainsburys BGTY cup-a-soups are a life saver.

BetsyBell · 20/01/2014 09:22

Handmini Try the bouillon route too - it's surprisingly satisfying (as much as a cupasoup) but for hardly any calories at all. Cupasoups are pretty much nutrition-free but use up a fairly large amount of your FD allowance. Don't just aim to fill up but consider how much good it's doing your body - that mind shift really helps with weight loss and getting healthier in general.

I always ask myself now if those calories are really worth it and as a consequence I don't eat things I don't really enjoy. Sounds obvious I know, but I used to do plenty of mindless eating - I remember eating things I didn't like faster to get it out the way quicker! How pointless! Why not just not eat it! No need to act like a human dustbin.

^ That does not relate to your cupasoup HM but wondered if the idea of it resonated with anyone else?

BetsyBell · 20/01/2014 09:25

Dotty, Handmini - someone on the maintainers thread regularly pops out for 50 mile cycles Shock

I've got some good gloves but I might see if I can dig up my silk glove liners too.

Am already wavering - it does look really cold out there. Might have to be the shorter to-the-shops-cycle...

BsshBossh · 20/01/2014 09:32

Brrrrrrr. So icy cold this morning. I'm planning a long walk with DH across Hampstead Heath today so am layering on the layers. And we're both fasting today too. Definitely need to give my digestion a break today as I have a dicky tummy from too much chilli in my Korean lunch yesterday.

hopefulgum · 20/01/2014 09:41

My fast day turned into a 16:8 day as I had a call at about 11 from a friend inviting Dh and me to dinner. I had just bought hot chips for DS and cousins, so I had a few to keep me going! I haven't eaten much else - tuna and some vegies with cheese sauce for lunch, and an ice cream. I am hoping I don't overdo the calories tonight, but I will just enjoy it all and have a fast day tomorrow.

handmini well done on the NSV.

curve and zed, I hope the day wasn't too long and hard. It is difficult when you haven't had enough sleep.

Betsy, that's a really long ride for me Shock What you said about eating things quickly because you didn't really like them - yep- I have been a human dustbin can relate. I still do at times, and I am working on being a lot more mindful.

Sounds like it is very cold in the UK? I hope you can find a warm spot to enjoy.

Eatriskier · 20/01/2014 09:43

Ok - slipper boots on, draught excluder repositioned and dressing gown on over my multiple layers - still freezing. May have to break out the hand warmers.

curveballs · 20/01/2014 09:43

Zed, southeast and all other fellow bad night sleepers. How you getting on?

I've managed to find a juicy bit of work to distract me. However feeling really achy and fuzzy head so I think I am coming down with something. Will see how I feel by lunch

RavenousRunner · 20/01/2014 09:44

Joining all you Monday fasters - feeling quite inspired as mysteriously, despite overeating my roast dinner on Saturday and having a burger for lunch yesterday, I lost nearly two pounds over the weekend and am back to pre-Christmas weight. No idea how this happened, but makes me determined to keep going and try to get to my goal weight. Only 6 pounds to go, I can sort that in a few months surely.

Lots of work to get through today and can't afford to be distracted by hunger, so going for three very small meals. Breakfast was 100g each tomatoes and courgettes, roasted with two tiny sausages, topped with a fried egg, for about 180 calories. It was tasty and I'm so much warmer having had a hot breakfast!

MelanieCheeks · 20/01/2014 09:45

Very cold here in Norn Irn - ice on the windscreen this morning.

Black coffee (I only drink coffee on FDs), and a mug of Bovril so far.

zedzedzed · 20/01/2014 09:49

Hi curve have done the frozen school run, have an illegally napping baby on my hands (guessing she's knackered after last night's exploits...wee blighter!) I'd normally use this opportunity to have some sneaky toast with no interruptions but...I've decided to paint up another old chair (for the building site house we are renovating and hope to live in...eventually!) So it's hard to drool on toast with the stench of gloss paint in your nostrils. Actually, smelling something non-yummy does help sometimes!

And gum, lots of minty gum. Am going to try the buttermint tea someone suggested in a minute.

Keep at it curve it's almost 'lunch' time!

PavlovsCats · 20/01/2014 10:04

Morning everyone!
On my 4th day in so far, 2nd fast day, its going ok I think.
Was DS1s birthday yesterday bit didn't have any cake, did have some fish and chips though (at his insistence, he's 3 and doesn't need to know Im trying to lose weight!) but I did count it in mfp so only ended up about 140 calories over which Im hoping won't make too much difference
Also did a couple of mile walk (a lot for me, I have spd still!) to look at a wedding reception venue so that might help too!

zedzedzed · 20/01/2014 10:05

PS buttermint tea is YUMMY! Like Murray mint pudding!

I've just made the baby a batch of mush; carrot, strawberry and banana ...very odd not tasting it, but I know it'll set me off. Smells lush. sniffs paintbrush to get a grip

lucyintheskywithdinos · 20/01/2014 10:07

Morning! Another 16:8 for me today (currently 16:8ing every day with one FD a week).

NSV in that I went away with my friend and our DDs this weekend and still managed to 16:8. It really suits me and I love the simplicity of it.

Sympathy to the tired people, DD3 is being a pest at the moment too.

BetsyBell · 20/01/2014 10:10

Well I've now run out of time to do a long ride now - I've got time on Wednesday so I'll save it for then - it's probably a bit icy on the roads this morning anyway (excuses, excuses)...

I've managed to get loads of admin done though so that's good Grin

Going to put on a thinker jumper and brave the cold now - to the closest shops round the corner, I think I'll speed walk it.

ravenous SV- well done! That's the thing, they often sneak up on you when you least expect it so it's worth persevering! A big eating day at the weekend does often help speed everything along - keep that metabolism guessing Grin
