The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Jobyloo I put the scales away for the week, did quite a lot of exercise and the blasted thing still gave me nothing to smile about! I do feel I need the scales to keep me in check but these days all it's doing is piing me off. Maybe, personally, I need to weigh every 2 weeks, after my 4th FD. Surely a drop would be seen then? How often are you weighing in J?

ErrolTheDragon · 19/01/2014 19:04

Curveballs, I've added that curry to the recipe thread.

curveballs · 19/01/2014 20:00

Bril, thanks errol Smile

vvviola · 19/01/2014 20:01

At the start of 3rd FD for me. Definitely avoiding bread today after I sabotaged my last FD!

After my breakfast cup of fruit tea I'm going to head upstairs and weigh/measure myself.

I think I'll have to keep very busy today to get through it, I had a bad night with the DC last night (DD1 woke at 1 and 2 am, DD2 woke at 3 and 5am and we were up for the day by 7) which is usually the trigger for a carb heavy snacky day.

lubeybooby · 19/01/2014 20:24

Hi all

went over TDEE just slightly on both fri and sat but that was mostly due to booze. I am 1000 under it today Shock which is great because it more than makes up for the rest of the weekend (only had about 500 to catch up on)

I've got some nice soup, lean chicken, peppers and cucumber in ready for the next FDs tues and thurs. Be excellent if I find those easier this coming week. I will do my first weigh in on weds morning.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/01/2014 20:30

Toffee Good to hear you enjoyed your roast lunch. That's how an NFD should be. If you did the cooking it must have been delicious.

vvv sounds like last night was a nightmare. Good luck with your FD.

n2bo have been weighing daily. I thought it would help me to get an idea of the pattern of weightloss but I think it's making me down, so not going to weigh until the end of the week. Sounds like fortnightly might work (got my fingers crossed), why is it so difficult to give the darned weighing scales up?? The numbers going up in between are no fun especially when you stick within TDEE and flipping work your butt off exercising. But...fingers crossed the numbers will be down at the end of the week.

Hooray42 · 19/01/2014 20:57

Bit of advice needed please- I did my first FD on Friday- all fine and stuck to the 500 calories and drank loads. I had a normal breakfast (2 x poached egg and 1 x brown bread) but about an hour later I started getting an irregular heart beat on and off until about 3.00pm (had lunch and snacks etc before) and nearly fainted whilst sitting down.

I am usually quite robust and not prone to light headedness- to be honest I expected to feel odd on the FD not the next day when I started eating again. Any one else had this or any advice? Second NFD today and all fine again.

A friend suggested the heart beat thing might have been electrolyte imbalance or lack of potassium but I would not think this would happen from just one day of fasting?
Thanks

MazzleDazzle · 19/01/2014 20:59

Joby I am currently staying away from the scales! Trying to weigh once a week only, but it's tough isn't it?

Long term fasters say measurements are more helpful. A friend took my measurements 2 weeks ago (I don't know what the results were!) and they're taking them again in another 2 weeks. Really hoping for a good result!

zedzedzed · 19/01/2014 21:01

Big celebration this weekend; first night spent together in our building site new house! Not moved in yet, just a night away from the babies, some DIY and a meal out. Lovely! And after dinner....I left a piece of pecan torte with chantilly cream on my plate, a big bit.Absolutely unprecedented!

This yummy three course dinner was the first time I felt brave enough to eat, almost,up to my TDEE since starting this woe, as it feels like way (weigh) too much (I've been consistently 600 under).

So after my wee torte victory I had a bacon bap and tea for brekkie in the cafe by the sea (NOT a giant full English with bread and latte as I would've before), I skipped lunch completely, still full up, and had a mini roast at my MILs (1 slice of lamb, 2 potatoes, LOADS of broccoli and carrots, no wine, no pud). YAY ME!!

FD tomorrow and no DH for 5 days; I'll be baby-frantic and lonely so this may be a testing week. Loved catching up on everyone's news tonight, very inspirational so well done all and thanks for being here. XXX

zedzedzed · 19/01/2014 21:03

Oh dear hooray how horrid, I'm new to this myself and haven't had that, but I'm sure one of the old hands will be along soon with some suggestions for you. X

Hooray42 · 19/01/2014 21:50

Thanks zedzedzed yes it was a bit scary as I didn't want to pass out in sainsbury's cafe! I'm now panicking and wondering if I'm diabetic or something. Glad to hear you're enjoying the diet though, x

TalkinPeace · 19/01/2014 21:54

hooray
how do you mean "irregular heartbeat" how could you tell, what did you feel like?
diabetes is unconnected with heart rate

sounds more like a blood pressure crash, the most likely reason for which is dehydration : when I used to have those I'd drink a pint of milk in the shop

BetsyBell · 19/01/2014 22:00

Hello Hooray - sorry to hear you've had an awful day. I used to get a little bit dizzy after eating post-fast day but nothing to the extent you're describing. It stopped once my body got used to fasting (after a 2 or 3 weeks I think) but something I found helped was eating fairly light the next morning - a bit of fruit and yogurt rather than toast.

Did you keep yourself hydrated on Saturday?

How are you feeling now - 2 days later?

Hooray42 · 19/01/2014 22:05

Thanks Talkinpeace I could sort of feel it beating in my chest- then when feeling my pulse in my neck it was like a delayed beat or an extra beat was put in def not a normal rhythm-only lasted a minute or so but came back at intervals later. But yes the dizzy thing my well have been blood pressure related.
I'm going to try another FD tomorrow and see how it goes. The heart beat thing may of course be unrelated to the diet I guess (maybe the kids were stressing me out more than normal!)

Hooray42 · 19/01/2014 22:09

Hi betsybell yes feeling great today but you might be right may be a smaller less carby breakfast might be better after FD -think I was quite excited to be eating again!

BetsyBell · 19/01/2014 22:13

Try a lighter breakfast and loads more (uncaffeinated) fluids post-fast next time Hooray. Glad you've felt great today :)

Jobyloo · 19/01/2014 22:28

hooray it may have been a one off but if it happens again it might be worth getting checked out by your Gp. Your heart's really sensitive to potassium and sodium, and if you were dehydrated from a FD or strangely enough over done drinking water on a FD you may have been a bit depleted in these. This may give you palpitations, make you feel dizzy as well as making your blood pressure a bit low. You could always have a chicken oxo as a drink on a FD which would help with the sodium and won't break the bank in cals (this will also help with headaches on a FD) and then maybe break your fast with a small banana the following morning for the potassium or incorporate this in to your FD. I echo Betsy in not taking too much caffeine as well. Glad you're feeling better now Smile

mazzle great idea about measurements!

hopefulgum · 20/01/2014 00:27

hooray, sorry to hear you have been feeling unwell. Seems to be loads of good advice from people.

jobyloo, my scales are all over the place (actually, it isn't my scales, it's my weight). I expect to see a loss, but get on the scales and it is varying from 78kg to 75.4 kg (the lowest one was after last week's second fast day, but since then it has gone up, this morning was 76.5!). So I am only logging the weights I have on the morning after my second fast day.

However, there are good losses in my measurements, so I take strength from that. It sounds like you are doing a lot of exercise, and if you are consistently under TDEE I would expect you would see a loss. Perhaps it is just one of those weird things, and the weight loss will show up in a large amount all at once? I think some of the more experienced fasters do have some theories on this and hopefully will come along and make sense of it. I wonder if staying under TDEE will slow down loss, or is that a myth? Anyone able to clarify that??

Even without the scales showing a loss, I feel different, and am a bit amazed at how much flatter my tummy is. Are you feeling a difference in your clothes?

Another fast day for me today. Although I go through hunger pangs in the morning, they always pass, and I keep telling myself it is another day closer to living a longer more healthy life, and a day closer to goal BMI!

I'm off now to have a long walk on the beach. Not sure if I'll run part of it today, I actually feel a bit sore and stiff from the running I did 2 days ago. Perhaps I'll just walk really fastGrin

That cauliflower based pizza looks delish! I think I might make it on a NFD. I am guessing my toppings of choice will make it a bit calorie heavy, so I'll save it for NFD. Today I'll make a vegie soup for lunch and perhaps have some fish for dinner.Always so satisifying.

Have a great day!Smile

MrsFlorrick · 20/01/2014 00:57

((((Elr))))

Hope you continue to perk up and we are all here for handholding.

On that note, I've had huuuuuuuuuuuge amounts of it here. (Looking at you TIP, Eatrisker, Betsy, Earslaps and Bigchocfrenzy) Grin
And ELR is correct, it's a bloody life saver at times.

vvviola · 20/01/2014 01:59

As I feared I was way too tired to make today a viable FD. Was feeling wobbly by 10am so abandoned the idea and shall try again tomorrow. There was no point in being daft about it.

bluestar2 · 20/01/2014 06:34

Well it's FD 1 for me and the supposedly lovely veg chilli I made is awful! Had wanted to plan to make it easer but guess I'm resigned to omelette for tea. I have 250 cal to play with so hope it's enough.

The cauli pizza sounds nice so maybe for FD 2.

Joby - are headaches normal on FD?

curveballs · 20/01/2014 06:41

Last night really was one of the worst nights sleep I have ever had. I think I saw every few minutes on the clock. Now having to get up for work and not feeling the love for an FD today. Of course I will give it a go, but have a feeling this may be my hardest one yet Hmm

zedzedzed · 20/01/2014 07:39

Oh dear curve me too!

(Got the babies back from my MIL and the littlest woke FIVE times last night...she NEVER wakes up but sleeps 7-6.30am like clockwork; it took me ages to work out she was starving! I guess the good ol' MIL told a porky about feeding her all her feeds at the right times...turns out they didn't even get up till after 8am yesterday, so yeah, I guess my whole day's gonna be a bit wonky and cruddy as I'm exhausted already and my baby is too...COFFEE!!!)

We can do it, come on, let's do it together, log in here once an hour for 2mins with a tea/ coffee/pint of water and talk rot to me when you feel yourself wavering! XX

curveballs · 20/01/2014 07:42

Thanks zed, certainly gonna take you up on that.

Do you think you'll be able to get a but of rest when your Lil one naps later? May make you feel a bit better

We'll get through Shock
