The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Just completed my first workout since starting this woe so I felt justified in having a drink tonight. Glass of wine? Don't mind if I do Smile

Recipe coming alert * Wink

Cheese and pineapple squares.

Prep time 20 mins.
Cooking time 10 mins.
Makes about 10-12 squares.

225g/8oz self-raising wholemeal flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
A pinch of salt (worked fine without)
40g/1.5oz butter, diced.
1 teaspoon mustard powder.
85g/3oz mature cheddar cheese, finely grated.
55g/2oz ready to eat dried pineapple, finely chopped (Aah, that is why it was hard to cut into squares when I came across large pieces of pineapple HmmGrin)
About 150ml/1/4pint milk, plus extra for glazing.

Preheat oven to 220C, 425F, Gas mark 7.

Grease or flour a large baking tray.

Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Lightly rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the mustard powder, cheese and dried pineapple and then add enough milk, mixing to form a soft dough.

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently. Lightly roll out the dough until about 2cm thick. Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into 5cm squares and place them on the baking sheet leaving a little space between each one.

Brush the tops with milk, then bake for 10 minutes or until they well risen and golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Can be eaten hot or cold.

Variations

Use chopped ready to eat dried pears or apricots in place of the pineapple. Use 1 beaten egg in place of some of the milk, if desired.

My poor brain cant cope with all the information thrown at it from catching up on this thread and I need a wee so will make this short.

tip that mindfulness link looks good but I stopped looking as it was making me want chocolate, so will look when I next have some.

toffee yes those squares sound delish. I've got loads of black strap molasses and dates, do you know of any recipes using those?

BCF those pics rock, I too love techno, nods head appreciatively and punches the air euphorically. I did my first full on fasting gym session today, which used to make me feel sick, way back when I started, but I loved it today. Thanks for the inspiration.

betsy and Melanie great reviews. Ive decided Im not weighing in until 21 feb which is my anniversary, its given me a real incentive to be well into the tens. Ive been sticking around low 11s since September, but its mainly due to NFD piggery which has to end.

helles hi good to see you again.Smile

still need that wee, must dash!

OurAveline · 17/01/2014 20:36

Evening all. I am really new to this and just wondered what your experience has been? I have just completed my second full week of 5:2 and am enjoying it in a way. I got weighed this morning and have lost 11lbs in 2 weeks. Presumably this is just an good start and the weight loss tends to slow down after the first week/fortnight? Thanks in advance.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 20:39

Toffee I have only white self-raising in - can I use that for now; also, how long to knead for? Thanks for the recipe - it's something I can do. I will sub in dried apricots though as DD loves them.

turkeybaby · 17/01/2014 20:39

thanks zed i've bookmarked that page. a plate of veg was actually lovely and didn't need the meat

mmm i like the look at that cheese and pineapple bread too i think i'll make that over the weekend.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 17/01/2014 20:46

Peplum - give me a few minutes.

Bssh if it was me I would give it a go now I have made them as they didn't rise that much using bread flour so I would chance it with SR.

zedzedzed · 17/01/2014 20:47

Wow...our Aveline that's crazy!

Mind if I ask what your TDEE is and whether you've been eating up to it?
Also are you exercising too.

XXX

OurAveline · 17/01/2014 20:51

Hi zed
I've never looked at TDEE so will have to go and investigate. I've been trying really hard to eat vaguely sensibly on my non fast days but all I want to do is eat. I reckon I manage 3 healthy days, 2 bingey days and 2 disciplined fast days. No exercise as I either can't find the bloody time or am knackered due to 500 measley cals on fast days!
Will be back with TDEE

turkeybaby · 17/01/2014 20:53

aveline - 11lb in 2 weeks!! that's amazing!

i still can't stop scanning things. i need to get a job in sainsburys

OurAveline · 17/01/2014 20:54

TDEE is apparently 1715 which I reckon I go over, at least slightly, on most non fast days. Might have to start getting better at controlling diet on those days. I really don't want to go backwards or plateau

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 17/01/2014 20:56

Peplum - I can offer date and muesli tea bread and date and walnut loaf. Also cheese and date bread.

No idea what blackstrap molasses are but I think I might have a muffin recipe with molasses in.

Just found apricot and date breakfast loaf, banana and date tea loaf, orange and date muffins.

Off topic Festive fruit snails are what I imagine you all mean when you talk about earslaps.

Peplum41 · 17/01/2014 20:57

OH toffs don't go to any trouble, you seem like a walking delish recipes book so thought you'd know something off the top of your headSmile

OurAveline wow!!! That's amazing, love the bread ref, I want it on a tray!

OurAveline · 17/01/2014 20:58

Haha turkeybaby it sounds like you're putting a lot more effort into your fast days than me. I buy EVERYTHING ready prepared as I'm too lazy/scared to cook anything with the right number of calories in

Peplum41 · 17/01/2014 21:02

Flowers toffee mmm to date and muesli tea bread....

turkeybaby lol Grin

Usually its dead on here on a Friday night as everyone gets their heads down early or they're troffing infront of the tv and don't want to think about fasting until Monday morning.

Peplum41 · 17/01/2014 21:07

Oh and the blackstrap molasses was something I bought for mild anaemia,Weetabix its quiet strong though, treacle-ish. Thing is I buy in bulk from suma and Ive got about 4 jars to get through. I know bread likes it on porridge, might try that tomorrow.

TalkinPeace · 17/01/2014 21:32

OI
Toffee .... instead of taunting us on here, could you start a thread called "toffee's deeply moreish baked stuff"
and I'll support baked stuff because if ladies get into the habit of baking copies of your beautiful stuff rather than shop processed carp, we are all onto a winner
xx TiP

MazzleDazzle · 17/01/2014 21:32

Cheese and date bread sounds delish!

FD here. Haven't drunk nearly enough and I am HUNGRY.

Had a WW risotto ready meal and a grilled sausage. Came in at under 500.
Cannot stop fantasising about food...pizza, cheese, steak, olives, roast veg...

And all the bread recipes are seriously making my tummy rumble!

Don't want to drink any more at this time of night as don't want be up through the night having to go to the loo.

It's my official weigh-in tomorrow! Pray for a SV for me, please!

Lilliput · 17/01/2014 21:35

I am going to have a decaf coffee and head to bed.
We are going for Chinese buffet tomorrow for birthday lunch. What shall I have that us not too naughty??

Bumblebeejumble · 17/01/2014 21:36

Second fasting-at work day went amazingly well. Surprised myself with an unplanned LOF until just now. Wasn't really hungry, but I know I can't sleep on an empty tummy, so had a banana and an apple. And a sneaky granola bar. Am still 150 cal under but just can't be bothered to think of something that's under that and then go and get it!

Weighing in tomorrow morning after wee, will post in. I feel better but I don't think I feel thinner.

Unexpected bad bit of today: dd had to take loads of measurements like handspan, height, armspan etc. I let her measure me and I came in at a whole inch less than I've always thought I was! Obviously, I told her she must have been measuring inaccurately, so did it myself. Had to eat my words, and revise bmi, tdee, and goal weight Sad

Bumblebeejumble · 17/01/2014 21:38

Lilliput chicken sweetcorn soup (the kind with the egg white floating about in it) is really low cal but filling. Eat some of that first, then you'll naturally pick healthier foods (or healthier portions) from the buffet. I do love a good buffet, have fun!

Bumblebeejumble · 17/01/2014 21:41

I haven't explicitly told my colleagues that I'm fasting, but they all laughed today when it came out that they're worried that I'm sick because they noticed that I went to the loo more than TEN times just in the morning! All the water and black coffee literally goes straight in and out again on aa fast day! I feel like a sieve.

Peplum41 · 17/01/2014 21:47

liliput when faced with something like that, I skip brekkie to save on cals for the day. You prob will ingest a lot anyway, just enjoy but aim to stop when you feel full or you will feel uncomfortable later. Its like having a gastric band fitted this woe! oh yeah, and drink water !!

bumble I used to think I was 5'4, til I got measured at the docs, Im 5'3. Have you measured all the important bits that you want to see shrinking? You will be glad you did as scales are notorious for showing no loss when there is a loss on the tape measure.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 21:55

On the Maintainers thread everyone's posting tips on bumping calories up so we don't lose more weight - so avocados, butter, macadamia nuts galore - and on this thread we're gushing over calorific baked goodies. I love this WOE Grin.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 21:57

Lilliput skip a meal then enjoy everything you want at the buffet. Why deprive yourself on a NFD! That's what I do anyway...
