The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Oh dear, DS has horse and lick disease. No, foot and cow. Something that sounds like foot and arse? No, hang on...heads, shoulders knees and toes plague? Anyhoo, Hand Foot and Mouth is a contagious virus which presents with ulcers in mouth, dots on hands and NON EXCLUSION from pre-school...that's the most important symptom to remember people... NON EXCLUSION, thank God! Nobody lick my kid, in case you were planning to. Poor boy.

turkeybaby · 17/01/2014 14:26

helloo

in the middle of my 2nd FD today. i've been really hungry today but still really motivated so its not bothering me. the fact that i can eat what i want tomorrow is a big motivator to me. and i will!!!

just caught up with the thread while eating my Glorious Skinny north african spiced veg soup - would recommend it is lovely. this is all i'm having until this evening i'm saving up to have a big plate of steamed veg at the same time DP has his dinner. otherwise I'll have to go and have a bath when he eats dinner like i had to on monday Smile

i'm starting to realise how many calories there are in stuff! i'm a complete novice i haven't really paid much attention to calories before. well not for many years anyway i probably did when I was a teenager. cashew nuts have LOADS! i get through bags of them no wonder i'm fat Shock

and the fact that 2 slices of hovis seeded toast, butter and marmite (which I would eat quite innocently) is the same as a huge bag of walkers crisps (which i would avoid as fattening) is a bit of a revelation too..

well done all of you on FD today. keep it up and dream of hot cross buns for breakfast tomorrow (that's what I'm having anyway)

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 17/01/2014 14:28

Wow mrsF that's a big loss, very envious of your bmi.

errol that recipe sounds interesting, although I'm like ravenous don't like Nutella

Sounds like a lot of us are doing well losing

On a fast day today, have a cold so feeling a bit miserable. Even worse ds (3 months old) has it too and is miserable. But much more importantly I'm still 11 stone 6 after 2 non fast days of not particularly mindful eating.

I've had 250 cals so far, aiming to come in at 750 - slowly dropping down my fd allowance.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 17/01/2014 14:32

zed your poor ds. I can't believe how sick kids get. I swear mine are ill 50% of the time and well 50% of the time. Thankfully it's just coughs and colds, nothing worrying so far.

turkey I know what you mean about realising how many calories are in my favourite foods I knew chocolate wasn't a health food but I didn't know it was quite so calorific
My first fast made me realise just how much I eat a day, seriously scary stuff.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/01/2014 14:34

Welcome, ILovemyDogs

Fat loss on 5:2 is driven by the weekly 3000 calorie deficit; very few people can lose weight by exercise alone.
However, exercise is important for health and to retain muscle while losing fat, so we do recommend it. Once you get used to 5:2, try boosting your exercise.

Sounds like you are a sugar junky in need of help. Many of us here had exactly the same problems and have found that FDs help reduce bad eating habits.

Choose a suitable day to start fasting, plan and calorie count those meals in advance, then go for it !

turkeybaby · 17/01/2014 14:41

mmm ilovemydog your lunch sounds yummy

LilyJoAndMe · 17/01/2014 15:22

Keep on you Fasters ! Smile

ImABadGirl · 17/01/2014 15:57

NSV today, went to shop for lunch, picked up some sweets then thought about it and put them back, got some chicken and vegetable broth instead, am on fast day and have had 422 cals so probably won't have anything else until tomorrow. I havr a kids party to go to so thank god for NFD Grin

well done to fasters and non fasters you lucky things

postmanpatscat · 17/01/2014 15:59

Phew, I had about ten pages to read to catch up with you all!

Well done to this week's losers, especially MrsF

turkey I sort of had hot cross buns for lunch, but not toasted or buttered, just eaten at my desk accompanied by a large pile of work. My mum is not generally old-fashioned but she refuses to buy hot cross buns except at Easter!

southeast we are still being driven slowly round the bend, but 'keep calm and carry on' is our motto along with 'I can eat it tomorrow' for me! Glad things are working out for you although living costs in our part of the world are ridiculous, I agree.

zedzedzed · 17/01/2014 16:03

Yup...nearly 400cals in a measly co-op vanilla cheesecake slice I discovered today, but the millionaire's shotbread pud has less than 280 (I think). We're having homemade melted chocolate pots instead of either. Still feels so naughty!

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2014 16:12

DontbeBlue - as others have said, losing muscle while on 5:2 is certainly not inevitable. I'm more muscular than I think I've ever been (esp in the upper arms) - because in addition to 5:2 I'm doing 30dayShred type things. I'm over 50, which your DH might also think would have me tending to decrease muscle.

Most of us find that 5:2 is very compatible with exercise! Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2014 16:21

After late brekkie, only had some Covent Garden soup shared with DH - the Tomato, veg and lentil 'skinny soup' which was really nice and not as salty as a lot of bought soups which is good for him. He's doing an FD - I think he's aiming for 800-1000 cals which is realistic for him at this stage. He's calorie counting other days and undershooting his TDEE - he says he's feeling good on this approach and his belt is comfortably one hole tighter! Smile

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 17/01/2014 16:54

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme - I was terrified of feeling hungry. Honestly it is fine, you soon get over it and you realise you don't have to eat the second you feel hungry and even if you do feel hunger you realise it isn't genuine when a drink suffices.

I enjoy full fat lurpak and purposely did not buy the "lite" version of something yesterday but I am feeling guilty about the odd lemonade and coke I have as I know it isn't good for me.

Jacket spud with home made prawn cocktail in 2 hours. Looking forward to it very much.

For anyone who lies to know, I made Cheese and Pineapple Squares today.

RavenousRunner · 17/01/2014 16:58

Oh, I am in trouble - just found a website with American foods for sale. All the terrible things I have been better off being away from. Cheetos, Hersheys chocolate, proper chocolate chips...the list goes on.

I have ordered a number of things and am going to ration them out as motivational treats on NFDs. I swear.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2014 17:06

You'll probably find Hersheys horribly sickly because honestly, it is - much better get some nice Green and Blacks.

Lilliput · 17/01/2014 17:10

I am fecking starving and can't eat til 7. Husband had declared felafels for dinner but they are 67 calories each and I only have 350 left and 3or 4 of them is not going to leave me satisfied. Hmm

RavenousRunner · 17/01/2014 17:14

Errol Hersheys is the only "bad" chocolate I like - it must be some hangover from childhood. I love G&B but they're not even versions of the same food in my mind; sort of like how hot dogs are not sausages really but every so often they taste really good.

I eat very few sweet things, just not that interested, but a bit of Hersheys every now and then sounds very good right now.

clarinetV2 · 17/01/2014 17:21

May I join you? I'm new to IF, I've done three fast days so far. The first two were OK, but the third one (yesterday) was very hard - I felt like I spent the whole day either thinking about how hungry I was going to be, or being hungry. It was really difficult to distract myself. And today I've eaten loads - about 500 calories over TDEE already. I do hope this gets easier.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 17:23

Toffee what are cheese and pineapple squares?

MrsFlorrick · 17/01/2014 17:32

Don't be. You're DH calling Bigchoc weak!! ShockShockShock Run for the hills! Yikes. That's brave.

Postmanpatscat. Grin Thanks.

As you can all see I've not got enough smileys for how I feel today. Grin

I LOF since dinner at 5pm last night.
About to break my fast with roast chicken broccoli and a few roast tatties. It's been a 0cal LOF so far.
Been saving it up for WineWineWine later tonight.
I've decided to try to kill my hideous cold and hacking cough with hot mulled Wine Grin It usually works.

Well done on all the losses this week.

It's fantastic to see all the new people getting stuck in and managing full FDs and losing well.
And equally fab to see the experienced folk to continue with lots of losses and NSV. Grin

I will come back later and tell you all about the most ridiculous thing which has happened to me this week.... It's so odd you just won't believe it. Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2014 17:36

RR - yes, the analogy between proper sausages and hot-dogs is apt!

BetsyBell · 17/01/2014 17:38

lilliput 3 falafels with a plate loaded with veg and salad might though... time to get creative with the contents of the salad drawer!

BetsyBell · 17/01/2014 17:40

mrsF - forgot to congratulate you on your loss this week. No more plateau for you! Well done :)

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 17/01/2014 17:49

Thanks BigChocFrenzy that's great. Smile

zedzedzed · 17/01/2014 17:53
