The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.
Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

WooHoo indeed, MrsF, good for you !
^^
You demonstrated again that all plateaux will budge - eventually, if you keep going.

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 12:41

So MrsF how long did your plateau last for? Am I still the thread winner with 4 months? Grin.

curveballs · 17/01/2014 12:59

Toffee - yes they are the mini milk lollies - vanilla (I think), strawberry or choc - I headed straight for the choc. I know they aren't exactly healthy. But at 30 cals, it was bril for my FD emergency.

Haven't had a chance to completely read thread today yet, but it seems everyone is doing brilliantly. Collective congrats to all Smile

After second week, and fourth successful FD yesterday I have lost a total of 4 lbs and I am dead chuffed.

Thank crunchie its Friday!!! Happy weekend everyone Smile

LilyJoAndMe · 17/01/2014 13:02

Great news on the weight losses.
Good Luck on your first FD Pavlov's Cat and your re-start Wannabeacareerwoman.

I can really identify with the habit of using food to respond to tiredness Godzilla. This has definately been one of my long standing habits. Anyhow, now I'm beginning to make in roads into that and- yes - talking about it at home . That is a big thing for me. I now don't feel that I'm having to do all this on my own. :) Slowly, slowly... catch your monkey!

BigChocFrenzy · 17/01/2014 13:08

Well done, Errol, healthy BMI and under 60 kg !
Now carry your dachshund around an hour a day and you're on the way down.
Hmm, then you're about 5'1", then. I'm glad someone here is even shorter than I am. Too many 5' 10" Amazons like MrsF.
Smile

curveballs · 17/01/2014 13:09

Big choc, I'm 5' dead on, so even shorter again

LilyJoAndMe · 17/01/2014 13:10

Love the less wobbly legs Mazzle.
That's happening to me too. One of my downfalls can start kicking in here though.
This is when I start expecting to be instantaneously ready for the warmer weather and the skimpier clothing that'll be coming in a couple of months. I feel like I need to rush myself along without giving myself any credit for the small successes along the way.

TalkinPeace · 17/01/2014 13:22

Dontbeblue
get your DH to look at Bigchocfrenzy or Bssh or Betsey or my pictures and THEN persuade himself that we are all fat and no muscle because of 5:2 ( but he'd better duck as breadandwine will throw a kettlebell at him)
We're still waiting for Southeast's no shirt picture ...... that might settle the argument

MrsFlorrick · 17/01/2014 13:22

Bssh. You're still the winner. I was part way my week 14 of stalling.

Given goal is so close I hope the stalling doesn't return.

It would be lovely to get to goal soon. Just from a mental point of view. Grin

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 13:27

DontBeBlueBeARainbow there are a fair few fasters on here with excellent muscle tone. Please do show your DH our profile photos. My DH fasts once a week too and, alongside a weight training programme, he's increased his muscle mass since starting fasting(this was verified by a doctor who measures such things - bodypod/Dexascan?). Moreover, Dr Varady of ADF fame says that if you eat up to 500 cals on fast days (ie not zero or too low cals) then you will maintain muscle.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 17/01/2014 13:32

Just watched 2 programmes on catch up and both had me in tears and I have now put the news on and the 3 year old boy is still missing and that set me off again.

Eatriskier · 17/01/2014 13:32

dontbe I wouldn't show him my photos, as I don't have great muscle tone. But I never did, its not a 5:2 thing!

anyone else getting a little concerned that they've just lost a mass of muscle, sugar and water and are now just fat on a stick Wink

Junebugjr · 17/01/2014 13:33

I don't update much but just an update for those looking to see if this works or not. Started at 10- 8lb ish, possibly more in early October. I'm down to over 9st. I haven't been very strict though, and missed two weeks of fasting over Christmas. Am about to get back to it seriously next week, with maybe some exercise! I'd like to lose another stone maybe considering I'm short.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 13:34

Eatriskier LOL.

Gluezilla · 17/01/2014 13:34

Grin@ Godzilla !

I do sometimes feel like Godzilla when DH is annoying me
LilyJo
I have noticed I have less desire for coffees to keep me going, Wine and chocolate - all past pick me ups when tired.

Don'tbeblue,
Why not watch the original Horizon programme together with your DH?
The link is at the top of this thread. It could help discussion ...

RavenousRunner · 17/01/2014 13:49

Small NSV for me - went to lunch in hall at my inn of court, which has brilliant food and always fish and chips on Friday. Skipped the fish and chips as I knew I'd feel rubbish all afternoon if I ate it - Spanish tortilla and salad instead, and just coffee after. Some day I will try the suet pudding. I don't even know what this is!

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 13:53

Oh I love suet pudding. Takes me back to school dinners (which I loved!). I must make or buy some suet pudding (and spotted dick - remember that?).

RavenousRunner · 17/01/2014 13:54

BsshBossh Now I'm determined to have it next week - will help motivate my Thursday FD! All their puddings come in massive puddles of custard which cracks me up.

zedzedzed · 17/01/2014 14:04

eatriskier* pffft, hahahaha!

I had a bacon roll today, first time I've eaten merit-less food on a NFD. It was delicious, especially minus my usual guilt sauce. A small victory followed, my son didn't like his ham and eggmayo bloomer so I............. PUT IT IN THE BIN!
This is unprecedented; today I stopped being his bin.

No idea how I'm going...my boots feel looser! I think my tum is smaller, it's hard to tell when your mummy apron is this big!

I am still determined not to weigh-in till the 4wk mark at the earliest...am hoping I'll lose something though as I've managed all my FDs under 500 and not gone over my TDEE ever (usually 5-700cals under during the week and still 200 under on the weekend as I'm less hungry now that I'm fasting and eating more protein and fat and less carbs...seems to be what my body prefers now).

Happy NFDs to all.

DRINK WATER and CLENCH

And to all FD-ers:

YOU CAN MAKE IT!

BigChocFrenzy · 17/01/2014 14:07

Don'tbeblue Show DH my photos and tell him that some of that muscle was gained on 5:2. The boxing gloves may give him a clue as to how "weak" I am.
Angry

Hello, marking my place as I would like to try this. No idea how I'll get on, as someone up thread said I am scared of feeling hungry. Blush

Do you need to exercise as well? I walk the dog every day and I have a dancing DVD that I do occasionally and I swim once a week.

I was running on a treadmill every other day. I lost over a stone but it took me a year and I bloody hated running. I stopped it and now I've put the weight back on.

I don't eat well. I've just had a white bread chicken sandwich with loads of mayo, crisps and a chocolate bar for lunch. I know I shouldn't eat like that but I absolutely crave it.

Here goes.
