The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

This is devotion. So hard to remember who said what, I am reading on my phone and posting on my lap top so I don't miss anyone out Grin.

curveballs - are the mini milks you talked about the lollies?

Thanks eatriskier. Smile

Well done MrsF!!! I am about 2lbs off no longer being over weight but it isn't my goal so we are half twins Grin.

RavenousRunner - remember we don't fail on this WOL. We rearrange! And you still lost. If I have had a treat in the evening and still lost I feel even less guilty. The guilt is going quickly. No point feeling guilty about eating.

WannaBeCareerWoman - we don't just use this thread for 5:2 talk so anything you want to chat about is fine Smile.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2014 10:05

I'm enjoying that 'Its an NFD but I'm not really hungry yet' feeling right now.

And also rather pleased with the scales showing 1.2kg (~2.5lb) down from last week, 59.4 kg. So that's all of xmas and a bit more off, and cracked that 60kg mark which was my goal for last year (I just made it but xmas put it over again). And this means that my BMI is now 24.7 - yay I'm back into the 'normal weight' band! Smile

MazzleDazzle · 17/01/2014 10:07

Well done Mrs F! That's incredible. You should be very proud of yourself.
How much weight have you lost in total, may I ask? Sorry if you've already said, but I'm on my phone and it's a bit difficult to read the whole thread.

Another FD for me today. I can't help but admire myself in the mirror! Yes, I still have a long way to go and I'm bigger than most, but I look so much slimmer. And my legs look younger! Not nearly so lumpy and wobbly.

I'm in this for the long haul, but I have a holiday booked for Easter with lots of friends who are younger and thinner than me and I really want to be looking my best.

Off to the gym now!

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2014 10:10

RR - Mondays are easier, aren't they? Maybe you need to do one full fast, a mini-fast with maybe some 16:8 type days. Its nice that this IF isn't prescriptive and you can adjust to suit your lifestyle.

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 17/01/2014 10:11

Friday weigh-in: -1lb for the second week in a row Grin Two successful fast days and all planned workouts complete - wooooop!

And I'd spent the whole walk to work convincing myself that I'd have gained and looking for reasons why!

Just one problem: how can I convince my DH that I won't lose muscle. I sent him loads of links from the OP, as well as other stuff from MM's website and Google. But he somehow believes cutting calories leads to muscle loss rather than fat loss.....! Not sure if it's something to do with his MSc in Sports Science. Humpfff.

Happy FD or NFD all, the weekend is coming Thanks

mscnile · 17/01/2014 10:17

wow well done mrsf and bssh and errol and angie and bobpat and loads of others I've missed - what a bunch of losers Grin

I've been for my first run this year Angry

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 17/01/2014 10:18

Just read through last few pages, well done on all the losses all GrinSmileGrin

MelanieCheeks · 17/01/2014 10:37

No loss for me this week, but that's OK. My FDs this week were only so-so.

Deviant yoghurt for breakfast here - 0% Fage Greek stuff which I love, a handful of salted peanuts, and a tsp of cocoa powder. Stir well together. Tastes not unlike Reeses peanut butter cookies Grin

HandMini · 17/01/2014 10:40

Hurrah to everyone! Especially those mad enough to do a FD on a Friday - good on you.

Thank you for all the inspiring stories, they are fab.

I am only 17 days in to the 5:2 WOL, so I haven't seen any weight loss yet and I still seriously wobble round the middle BUT I am totally amazed at how much more energy I have and how my milky coffee and bread addiction has been curbed.

Feeling really positive today (maybe that's because I've had a coffee and croissant for breakfast (NFD!)).

I don't own any scales (have hopped on the ones at work a few times) - is anyone else in this position and if so, do you measure weight loss / change in body by looking in the mirror at your naked self (!) or do you see if clothes fit more tightly / loosely. Can't afford any scales at the moment.

Eatriskier · 17/01/2014 10:44

melanie I think you've given me another thing to try! That sounds delish

Well done on all the losses and maintains - don't forget the weeks you don't lose, as long as they're not gains you're still doing fab.

dontbe I think bigchoc is the lady to answer that.

MrsFlorrick · 17/01/2014 10:44

Mazzle. I've lost over 6 stone. Not all on 5:2. I've tried a whole variety of diets and woe.

Put the weight on during pregnancy and gestational diabetes. It's 2.5 years since DS, my youngest was born.

I've effectively done this journey twice. The same happened when I was pregnant with DD. although I didn't lose the full six stone before falling pregnant again with DS 14 months after DD was born.

5:2 is by far the easiest and has had dramatic health results for me. Blood pressure gone from sky high to normal.

And I am never deprived with 5:2. I do what Betsy and Bssh do. Two FDs. And three week days of eating under TDEE and blowout Saturday night and sometimes Friday night too Grin

RavenousRunner · 17/01/2014 10:47

MC your yogurt sounds delicious - do you mean drinking chocolate powder, or unsweetened cocoa powder? I may have this for breakfast tomorrow. One of the many foods I'm glad I can no longer get after moving to London from the US 13 years ago is my favourite sundae at our local ice cream shop: chocolate ice cream with hot fudge and hot peanut butter sauce, topped with whipped cream and a peanut butter cup. They were sooooo good, and a total calorie bomb.

Oh dear, now I'm thinking I could probably make one myself if I used natural PB - must stick to the yogurt.

almostthereagain · 17/01/2014 11:07

Morning everyone, I'm struggling to remember who's who so will just say a huge well done to all losers, very inspiring, enjoy your nfd, sounds like lots of yummy stuff planned. I ate late last night so still only had coffee this am, wondering if I can manage a friday fast to kick start things a bit. Off to work out my TDEE, didn't do that last time, & re log on to MFP. Don't think I use it in the best way as I find it quite time consuming but then I'm hopeless at any gadgetty thingConfused Will try to find time to inspire myself to exercise on't tother thread too. Have a good day, anybody else mad enough to join me in a friday fast? Sorry can't remember who said they were fasting on previous page & don't want to lose my post, as I said, hopeless.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2014 11:14

that yogurt does sound weirdly good ... think I'll stick to my normal onken set with fruit(blueberries today), nuts and seeds. Which I probably should go and get about now.

If you want chocolate ice-cream but feel you shouldn't, you could try this (an idea I picked up from CMOTDibbler, incongruously, not a name usually associated with edible foodGrin ) - freeze slices of banana - then bung in a food processor with a blob of nutella and process till smooth. OK, its got nutella in it but the rest is one of your five a day. I'm thinking of experimenting with the banana plus cocoa powder (not drinking chocolate) and maybe some yogurt.

EarSlaps · 17/01/2014 11:17

Just scanning thread, but woohoo MrsF- well done, so close!

MelanieCheeks · 17/01/2014 11:27

Green and Blacks cocoa powder - definitely not drinking chocolate.

RavenousRunner · 17/01/2014 11:29

Errol ooh I will try that, though maybe with regular choc spread as I don't like Nutella. My sister has a good recipe she used when bfing my nephew who's allergic to everything - melt 100g dark chocolate, cool, and throw in the food processor with a packet of silken tofu and a dash of vanilla. Then chill it in individual bowls, and it's quite a good substitute for chocolate mousse.

Errol - I just made banana and cocoa smoothie for my children (needed to use up gross bananas) they loved it! I snuck a sip too - yum. Be nice with greek yogurt...or even coconut milk if no dairy.

Hooray42 · 17/01/2014 12:03

Hi, I'm new to mumsnet, this thread and the 5:2 diet. But thought I would try the 5:2 after a long time doing strict calorie counting then having horrible carb filled binge days when I ruin it all again.
Just a quick question I'm doing my first fast day today and wondered do people avoid diet coke on fast days? Or is it ok to have one to get me through my predicted horrid 4'o clock diet slumps? Thanks

Eatriskier · 17/01/2014 12:07

hooray I never avoided diet drinks on FD. In fact I have a pepsi max obsession that really isn't very good, though I try to limit myself to water during the day everyday and a treat pepsi max or two in the evening! I found diet drinks really helped me on some fast days. Presumably because the taste makes you feel like you've had something. Some people find they make them hungrier though, so if you find that yourself its best to avoid. Never happened to me though, but we're all different.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2014 12:10

hooray - the usual advice is to avoid 'diet' drinks - artificial sweeteners can make you feel hungrier. But you can drink tea or coffee, with milk (I put a days allowance in a jug), or herbal teas or sparkling water. Or something like miso soup, Bovril or a hot stock-powder/cube drink.

Having said that, I did have a coke zero yesterday ... caused a lot of burping and tummy rumbles but otherwise I was ok with it. If you work with other people I'd avoid it for that reason!

Hooray42 · 17/01/2014 12:18

Ok thanks both for the advice- good to know its not off limits completely though. Fingers crossed I can get through the first FD ok- have planned out exactly what to eat which often helps me.
Looking back over this thread it sound like everyone is doing really well.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 12:27

Welcome to Mumsnet and the 5:2 thread Hooray. I spent my first few months drinking Coke Zero on fast days with no negative affect on either making me hungry or weightloss. The interesting thing though is that after a few months my desire for diet drinks disappeared and I hardly ever have them now.

lubeybooby · 17/01/2014 12:31

If I can manage an FD anyone can. 500 on my first one and 450 yesterday. I am a big girl (18 stone 6) with an enormous appetite and until this week very scared of hunger (not now!)

Having said that I lost 31lb last year cal counting and kept over a stone of it off. Was intending to maintain but not quite managing it as a stone went back on over the last 6 months of the year BUT I had definitely conquered my binge eating and huge portions before coming to this WOE.

I am confident now that I can tackle the rest and maintain long term with it being a total way of life. I have seen the light!

By 'the rest' I mean about 4/5 stone of it. I don't want to be below a size 14, I have a huge frame and hourglass figure somewhere under all this curvy suits me well.

The beneficial blood pressure and cholesterol effects are what I'm after too :)
