The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

FD survived yesterday. I spent approx two hours debating with myself whether I could go 50 cals over and just have some chocolate. For some reason my cravings for chocolate were unbearable. Then I discovered mini milks are just 30 cals. Came in under 500 and ended the day quite satisfied Smile

Eatriskier · 17/01/2014 07:39

wannabe Its natural for weight to fluctuate like that, as it will depend on what is in you system and what isn't. MM recommends weighing once weekly after the second fast. Please don't weigh daily unless you aren't likely to get disheartened by the fluctuations. If you want to weigh daily some people here recommend the happy scales app which will smooth out the fluctuations and show you an overall trend.

Eatriskier · 17/01/2014 07:42

peplum I've given the filters a good wash out. TBH I hadn't stayed on top of that. Will see if that helps and if not I may try getting some new filters. Really need to clean out the old dyson's filters out too. The old dyson has always been better but its massive and completely impractical in our little house and also sounds like its planing our wood floors...

CinammonGirl · 17/01/2014 07:43

Thanks toffee :)

Well first weigh in this morning - I've lost 4lbs!! I'm so so pleased! I know every weigh in wont be as successful as this one but its given me such a boost :) I can do this!

Well done to all yesterday's fasters and good luck to today's!

positively9something · 17/01/2014 07:43

Morning all good news I'm down to 10.0.8 this morning after my fat day Grin only one pound to go to reach my 9 something that I was before Christmas. I just need to be careful over the weekend not to go over tdee.

Hmm what's everyone having for breakfast?

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 07:46

Well done all of today's losers, especially to Toffee for getting off her plateau.

1 lb down for me this week. So 1.6 lbs away from my goal of 125 lbs :) 5:2 is still definitely working for me one year on.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 07:47

Hmm what's everyone having for breakfast?

DH has the day off so I'm trying to persuade him to join me for brunch later. I fancy a black pudding and scrambled egg stack on marmalade toast that my local cafe does so well.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 07:49

Welcome to the madhouse WannaBeCareerWoman :)

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 17/01/2014 07:54

BigChocFrenzy - you say the same as my Wii about eating mainly in the mornings and early afternoon.

PavlovsCat - Good luck!

CinnamonGIrl - it is great, isn't it?! Well done.

I am feeling peckish but don't want to eat yet. Need to leave in 10 minutes to take the kids to school then a quick stop at Asda so home about 9.45. No idea what to have to eat but might wait until lunch as having some polenta I made for the kids that didn't work out so have left it to firm up. Apparently I have to fry it and melt some cheese into it so I have been waiting for a NFD!

Jacket potato and home prepared prawn cocktail for dinner. I was going to buy it but it is really easy to make and probably less strange things on the ingredients list.

BsshBossh Thank you! I am so relieved. Feel Blush about my tantrums though Grin.

zedzedzed · 17/01/2014 08:05

bssh ack! You actually made me gag! All those components are lovely, but all together? I'd need to taste that to believe it.

Thanks to peplum and to all for the insomnia advice, I went to bed later than usual after a lovely salmon/cous-cous dinner, 350cals, with an options hot chocolate with a splash of milk (so still under 500) and slept pretty well...though my dreams are pretty lucid!

Looking forward to 3 NFDs now.

To all those concerned about having to count calories on NFDs, it's an AMAZING education and a tool you can use, then dump, then come back to later if you go awry...and if you feel cheated that you still have to count cals on a nfd while on 5:2, just remember your TDEE is based on maintenance calories, (set MFP to maintain weight) there're a lot more 'allowed' than on a calorie controlled diet, which is what stops you (me) binging.

But if you're going way over regularly, yes, you'll make up your FD deficit and gain. But it's SOOOOO much better than eating low fat crud everyday of your life...forever!
I'm saying this with no clue whether I'm losing yet or not, just based on how in control and happy with my choices I feel!

DH did FD with me yesterday, very proud of him.

Eatriskier · 17/01/2014 08:05

toffee I missed that you'd lost weight too. der. well done!

well done too to cinnamon and positively

I'm having deviant porridge (jam and peanut butter in mine) for brekkie. What else would I possibly have Wink.

I have a good splurge day planned. Lunch will be warburtons thins with butter, wholegrain chilli mustard, ham and scrambled eggs followed by a yoghurt. Dinner is homemade pizza, dessert is some scrummy chocolate and a few Wine later.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 08:11

zedzed Grin. Truly, it tastes amazing.

MrsFlorrick · 17/01/2014 08:20

Woohoo!!!
The looooooong stall is over.

A sudden and unexpected loss and today I am 154.5lbs!! GrinGrin

That makes my BMI 21.2 GrinGrinGrin

Soooooooo close to goal. Literally 2lbs away Grin

I still need to get rid of cold and get my wobbly arse and tum back to Bigchocs exercise threat and firm up some more.

But still GrinGrinGrin

Nuff cheering. Back to enter the school run zone!

BetsyBell · 17/01/2014 08:24

I've decided on having breakfast as I want to get most of my calories in the first half of the day so I've got no food sitting around in my stomach at TaeKwonDo later (6.30). I don't like to have anything too sweet or grainy at breakfast after a fast so today I've had 2 boiled eggs, with half a slice potato and a slice tomato all heated briefly in a bit of olive oil in a pan. Lashings of pepper.

In retrospect I probably would have preferred my vogel toast, marmite and avocado combo - but the avocadoes are less than ripe. And I didn't want toast.

I'd have bssh's brunch though. Yum.

BsshBossh · 17/01/2014 08:24

MrsF woohoo! We're back to being weightloss twins :)

lubeybooby · 17/01/2014 08:30

well done MrsFlorrick :o

So that's my two FD's totally rocked this week. I found the second one easier apart from when I could smell my dinner cooking.

NFD's now til Tuesday - I feel like I've won the lottery, oh heavenly heavenly TDEE I love thee...

nouvellevag · 17/01/2014 08:40

Well done everyone! I have just weighed and (for what it's worth a few days in) am 3 lbs down from the beginning of the week. Grin Mostly fluid or not, it's just nice to see the scales headed in that direction after a long while of them doing the opposite.

AngieM2 · 17/01/2014 08:48

1lb gone today.....but feel I should claim more as I haven't had a poo for 3 days.....no doubt I'll be cured following my champagne breakfast later!

BobPatSamandIgglePiggle · 17/01/2014 09:11

Bloody toast

BobPatSamandIgglePiggle · 17/01/2014 09:17

Bloody Hell - I've done 4 fast days (in 2 weeks) and my jeans are really loose - even DP noticed (and he doesn't know I'm fasting - keeping quiet about it for now!)

I've decided not to weigh myself as this is more about how i feel rather than numbers on the scales. I'll be happy to go down to a 14 (from a strained 16) but would LOVE to be back in my size 12s!

MrsFlorrick · 17/01/2014 09:23

Bssh. Grin Yes. Well done on your loss. Grin

We're all motoring this week.

So many amazing losses. Grin

Lubey. Well done on your 3lbs. That's amazing.

So many new face here. I'm still catching up with you all.

Zedzed. How are you doing.

Toffee. Well done on loss. Grin

Where's Turkey??

Bigchoc. Love you choc covered exercise photos. That's very funny although it does make me want some choc (sneaks off to basement to check on choc stash). Wink

MorrisZapp · 17/01/2014 09:32

Deviant porridge :) Love it! FD here today. I made some veg soup last night, that'll do for lunch.

Dinner tonight is waitrose 'you count' fish pie with cheesy mash on top. Last week I had the meat version and I have no idea how they make it come it at 300 calories. It's witchcraft.

Breakfast was a banana and a cup of tea.

Gluezilla · 17/01/2014 09:42

Morning!
Completed my first week - NFD until Tuesday.
Have really enjoyed this weekConfused

I feel so much better and its triggered lots of discussion within the family about our eating habits, sleeping, life balance etc.
The main issue being tiredness and using food to try and counteract this.
My DS has stopped his energy drinks and is going to bed at a reasonable time Shock
We are all going to eat our dinner earlier and cook less elaborate meals during the week - fish, veggies ,salad and go to bed earlier.

NFD today - not feeling very hungry as I still have a cold .
Thank you everyone for such an inspiring thread Flowers
and well done !!!

Should I weigh now or wait until next week ?

RavenousRunner · 17/01/2014 09:44

Breakfast report - fried egg between two slices of seeded toast with 30g mature cheddar melted on, with loads of pepper. It was very good, and after making it through the miserable rain this morning I was happy to have something hot!

Bit of a FD fail last night - got home and as predicted couldn't resist and ate normal dinner with family. It was chicken with white beans and tomatoes, and salad, so nothing terrible but way more than than 300 calories I had left. Oh and wine...oops. Still, was down a bit this morning so wasn't all for nothing. I was feeling quite bad by that point - I'm not sure Thursday fasts are going to work for me, my work is very stressful and I find my brain doesn't work very well when I'm fasting. Mondays seem fine as I have more than enough in reserve from the weekend! Will aim for 800 calories next Thursday and see how I get on.

Weekend of eating awaits...roast chicken tomorrow night, Byron burger for Sunday lunch, DS2 and I are making chocolate chip cookies tomorrow. Hello, NFD heaven (though I'm already putting it all into MFP to see how much I have to run to make up for it).

WannaBeCareerWoman · 17/01/2014 09:55

Thanks all. I'll be lurking a bit more... So inspirational to read all your comments, but not sure I can contribute yet...
