The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Hello gang,

It's a FD for me...so far just two milky coffees and a cup of Marmite drink (i don't eat Bovril) plus usual gallons of water. Feeling ok - today was helped by getting to work really late around 1030, so avoiding usual breakfast cues of desk etc.

Last night I baked a chicken breast cut into thirds as American chickens are huge with onion, chickpeas, olives, lemons and parsley last night and will have the leftover third (sans yesterday's couscous) for my FD supper.

Will be quite late getting home though as have waxing appt at salon - FDs are easiest when I delay eating AND keep busy :). I'll be too busy with the pain to worry about food!

I have not seen anything change on the scales since starting a week ago though...although I feel as though I'm slightly less podgy around the middle and it is my TOM starting tomorrow.

good luck to everyone else who is Fding today :)!

positively9something · 16/01/2014 19:20

wow this thread is moving so fast, I honestly can't keep up.

So fd today, I have had soup about 4ish, lots of water all day, coke zero and a hot ribena.

I am going to have something else soon, I really fancy porridge so I think I will have that.

So i started this beginning of november, lost weight slowly, finally managed to hit 9 stone something just before christmas (9.13.8) then after christmas I had put on one pound which I was happy with. But after new year I was upto 10.3.8 Shock

I only missed about 1-2 fast days during the festive period, I have continued to fast but i have been greedy on nfd so I'm not loosing any weight Sad

help me to get back on track, I was doing really well before christmas.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 16/01/2014 19:30

curve Smile at your toddler, mine is a feeder too but she would have eaten the chocolate herself. She loves feeding me grapes though.

She's truely trying my patience today. It's a battle for control in the when household and I'll be in serious shit in 10 years time if I let her break me now.

Fast day planned for tomorrow, dd is in nursery but ds is poorly sick with a hidiously snotty cold.

positively9something · 16/01/2014 19:31

also Ive started to notice my eating patterns have changed, if I have porridge for breakfast, I can managed to work through the day without lunch, I work 9.15-3.15, and I'm not overly hungry but do fancy something to eat. Then when I get home I start eating junk and carry on eating it all night

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2014 19:35

Toffee - yes, coke zero has aspartame and another sweetener - hence me terming it 'illicit' Grin.

PavlovsCats · 16/01/2014 19:37

Hello

I'd really like to start doing this, I set a date for my wedding today (Sep 2015) and I have a fair chunk of flab I need to shift before that, about 1lb a week between now and then

I'm going to start on 4:3, is that right? Would appreciate any help anyone can give?

Oh my god that was so nice... and get this, I'm stuffed and couldn't eat it all Shock

I even left a bit of the burger Shock Shock

I am however saving it for later to make sure i don't go to bed with the rumblies. Should mean I don't need my olive fix either, so 450cals today :o

Beware of calorie counts on diet products as legally the calorie count has to be right within ten per cent. So something that claims to have 99 cals could well have 109 if it is marketed as a diet product.

BsshBossh · 16/01/2014 19:40

Inspiring reviews Betsy and Melanie Thanks. My 1 year review is due in a fortnight. Can't believe I've been 5:2ing for a year!

Covered I've not suffered from anaemia due to fasting that I know of. I feel generally tired since last November due to various low-level illnesses but I don't put that down to fasting. You should get a GP's opinion I think, get some blood tests. I know some people who swear by Floradix.

BsshBossh · 16/01/2014 19:41

lubey that venison burger sounds delicious, just my kind of thing.

Maeve789 · 16/01/2014 19:42

Ive fone two fd this week, so i am done til monday.

Dotty342kids · 16/01/2014 19:43

Oh, nothing tastes as good as a FD dinner (well, maybe a slab of Dairy Milk Grin )

Normal day tomorrow and got the last of DH's homemade millionaire's shortbread to look forward to. Oh, I'm salivating already!

Maeve789 · 16/01/2014 19:43

Phew. I shouldnt feel this much relief! I might just do one more week of two fast days then go down to one fast day a week for a while..
In case i crack.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2014 19:43

Woohoo, you ! Well done over the year, Betsy.
Important healthy NSVs, an excellent SV and a lovely review.

Well done to Melanieas well.
Marvellous that you inspired family members to join you on 5:2

Ouch, ELR, today sounds rather painful and you had to worry about looing too, while being lasered.
It's impressive that you womanfully resisted the comfort of cake.

OP posts:
Maeve789 · 16/01/2014 19:44

Bshbosh, have u managef it twice a week for a year? Have you had to tell everybody? !

BsshBossh · 16/01/2014 19:44

Pavlov welcome! Why don't you start off with 5:2 as generally the average weekly loss for that is 1 lb, then 4:3 can be your fallback option if, after a month or so, 5:2 is not working for you. Two fast days a week are easier as a newcomer and you're less likely to fall off the wagon so soon (three days must be hard!).

TalkinPeace · 16/01/2014 19:45

coveredinweetabix
I've not had anaemia that I'm aware of ..... I had it really badly during both pregnancies and had regular blood pressure crashes (hence the faint and the rebuilt nose) but the main thing is to stay really well hydrated.
It might be worth you drinking more milk and having more fish - both of which give lots of accessible iron

lubeybooby · 16/01/2014 19:45

BsshBosh they are beyond gorgeous and 113 cals a piece. Stocked in Tesco

However if you use the myfitnesspal barcode scanner it doubles it for some reason, I nearly had kittens til I checked the packet myself and could see that MFP had it wrong. Everything else I've scanned so far has been ok it was just that.

zedzedzed · 16/01/2014 19:48

I still have 125cals left!

But they're for emergency night-time pangs, anyone else feel all empty-bellyish and insomniac through the night on FDs (despite saving all cals for dinner?) Any tips Ye Oldies?

Tesco delivery arriving in a minute so I'll get to LOOK at all the lovely things we can eat this weekend (expensive blue cheese, duck breast, smoked salmon, sirloin steak, chocolate mousse makings...as I'm eating much less than before I figured we should splash out on better quality, if less food...can't wait!)

Hope all the FD-ers are happy-ish with what they've accomplished...it's GOT to be better than what you used to shove in your gob and much better to know you can relax tomorrow and try again another day and STILL see things trending downward overall. Well done us.

ShyGirlie · 16/01/2014 19:50

so disappointed today....

started this WOL last week on thurs and fasted again on monday. Both successful days, kept strictly to 500 cals.

Weighed myself this morning (weekly weigh on on thurs morning) and the scales are the EXACT same Sad Sad

so i've had a pretty miserable fast day 2day, felt like giving up (havent so far)

have never taken any measurements so cant compare that

was just really hoping for even 1lb off to encourage me to keep this up. maybe its just not going to work for me? Sad Sad Sad

BsshBossh · 16/01/2014 19:51

Maeve yes, twice a week for a year excluding a bit of the school summer holiday when I thought I'd reached goal at BMI 25. My immediate family know I 5:2 as some of them do it too; my friends who are and always have been slim are not interested in diet talk so they know I fast but we never chat about it; my overweight friends ask about it then say Oh my I could never do that! so I don't bother mentioning to them anymore (the evidence of its success is right there before their eyes Grin. The person I chat regularly about intermittent fasting with is my DH as he does 6:1 for health reasons only and as a scientist he loves discussing the research.

TalkinPeace · 16/01/2014 19:53

shygirlie
a week is nothing : try to think in months
are you staying within TDEE on non fast days?
have a read through the tips and hints to see what ideas you can apply

But remember, this is not a rapid weight loss programme.
Its a way of eating for the rest of your life that will gradually bring your head and body into a healthy place.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2014 19:55

shygirlie, I don't think you can tell much from just a couple of weighings - there can be a lot of variation depending on (no polite way to put this ) gut content and amount of water in you. Go and weigh a mug of water and oh, maybe a banana to see what I mean.

Presumably you didn't overeat on the NFDs?
