The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Thanks Dotty. And I didn't see you snaffle fruit cake so you're off the hook

Ooh, I seem to be having one of those euphoric fasts today (hooray!) It didn't start out that way so I'm more than a bit pleased to feel so delightfully cheerful this afternoon.

I should get my year review on here as I'm such a good mood. Will sort out a post :)

TalkinPeace · 16/01/2014 16:09

golly you lot are busy
and lovely to still have new people piling in ...

Thought for the Day on R4 - yes I listen to it every day while washing up - silly sanctimonious cow Grin

I'm doing a "mini fast" today - because I REALLY wanted lunch - but will keep supper at around 500 so 800 for the day
which if I counted back my exercise calories would be zero
tries to justify self

BetsyBell · 16/01/2014 16:26

Betsy's 1 year in review - started 15th January 2013:

I have spent most of the year doing 5:2 with 2 meals on fast days - a small lunch at 12.15 plus small dinner at 6pm. Sometimes just one meal in the evening. I usually have the 500 calories, occasionally more on my second fast of the week.

My BMI has reduced from 26.1 to 22.6. My stats are on the com/Talk/fasting_diet/1908144-The-Inspirational-5-2-Thread inspiration thread so I won't post all those details again but I did want to look at how my appetite and attitude has changed:

No fear of hunger
Smaller appetite and fill up very quickly
Eating is more mindful
More likely to make healthier choices and rarely buy or have junk in the house
Prefer healthier food
Can barely tolerate over-salted food
Far less enjoyment of highly sugary foods
Unlikely to eat lower quality chocolate if offered and never buy it
Less tolerant of alcohol
More moderate with alcohol
No longer dependant on hi-carb foods
Less enjoyment of most hi carb foods (except bread)
Still love bread but eat less of it less often and can usually eat it in moderation

I now acknowledge that my TDEE is quite low and I don't need an extra piece/slice of anything
Acknowledged to myself that actually my DH and DSs should eat more than me and follow their lead/let them eat the biscuits (should there be any)
Acknowledged that I am now a slim person (that took a surprisingly long time to do)

I am very happily maintaining around a weight that suits me. I will continue to 5:2 in the same way for life. If I stop I know my appetite (and therefore weight) will incrementally increase if there are no fast days to punctuate my eating and reset my appetite. Christmas and holidays when I pause the 5:2 have shown me this. I prefer how I feel when I fast twice a week.

2014 target: To take fitness more seriously.
Adhoc-ness worked really well when I had loads to lose but now I need to streamline and focus. I'm currently on track for this target (though it is only January). Doing 5:2 for a year has made me realise I can stick to a task and therefore I feel confident I can make a significant and permanent change to fitness regime too.

MelanieCheeks · 16/01/2014 16:44

MC's review of the year:

I started out by eating 3 meals a day and snacks - tricky, but doable. I learned that salad and veg were good, so much can be had for very few calories.
Then I dropped the snacks.
Then I reduced the lunches to very light soup.
And then I dropped breakfast - I never thought I'd be able to do that!

I've got my bmi down to under 25 - just. I'd like it a little lower, but this isn't a quick mehtod, and I'm happy to continue for benefits other than just weight loss. I'm delighted that I persuaded my sister and husband to try it - they've both done brilliantly - and even my mother is having the odd fast day.

I recognise how different foods will make me feel, especially sugars and carbs.
I'm less tolerant of alcohol.
I can say no to temptation...well, most of the time.

lubeybooby · 16/01/2014 16:44

that's brilliant Betsy, I really hope to have the same attitude changes. I'm already not afraid of hunger after the first FD, it was really manageable.

Now tackling my second FD I have promised myself I'm going to keep this going for at least a year. Intending on 6:1 for maintenance at some point

I've only been going three days with one FD, NFD then FD again today but I already think this is do-able long term for me. It's just a day and I can have it tomorrow...

TalkinPeace · 16/01/2014 16:50

Betsey and Melanie
could you pop those posts over onto the inspirations thread because they are excellent ....

ELR · 16/01/2014 17:08

Evening all, lovely 1 year story betsy.
bigchoc love your pics especially the chocolate bars blocking your face!
I had to eat early today at 11am as was going for some laser hair removal around lunch time and fast days make me need the loo so much if I havent eaten I was worried I'd need the loo half way through the treatment, anyway it wasn't too bad but was quite painful so kind of a no scale victory resisted a big slice of cake with my cuppa afterwards.
Got drenched picking the kids up from school and our boiler is broken so was freezing when we got in so my fast day went out the window had a banana a cuppa and a few chocolate hazelnuts from hotel chocolat, planning a stirfry for tea so will make it a 16:8 mini fast with 1000cals instead.

Eatriskier · 16/01/2014 17:29

Love the sound of the vegetable/bovril soup.

betsy and melanie - like tip says, get those on the inspirations thread. Really nicely written posts that say so much more than just weight loss!

FD here today, am shattered. Did my 3 mile run and 4 mile cycle (on my cross trainer - I am not mad enough to leave me house!) before 7, hula hooping that I missed out on yesterday by 11 and have spent my first child free afternoon in ages doing a top up shop (walking there and back) and making my house less dirty spotless. I am calling it a day with dusted surfaces and clean floors all over, but just clean floors in the bathroom and kitchen - they can have their own deep clean on sunday. Our dyson isn't sucking up as well so we got the old one out, and the euphoria of the clean look you get with a working dyson made me go cleaning mad or its the FD madness.

Keep on in there all of today's fasters, we're all nearly there.

zedzedzed · 16/01/2014 17:37

Do you get £200 when you pass Go/Toddler Teatime?! Wish it was 200cals!

Keep on trucking FD-ers!

We can eat it tomorrow.

And CLENCH

And DRINK WATER

Dotty342kids · 16/01/2014 17:51

ELR I had boiler "issues" on Monday (FD) and it broke me! Tuesday ended up being a replacement FD after I took refuge in Dairy Milk on Monday afternoon Smile

lubeybooby · 16/01/2014 17:57

Eatriskier it totally hit the spot. I'll definitely do that again, maybe vary the veg a bit.

I am rocking this FD - just done my daughter's dinner, quite a lot of prep and grating cheese and was absolutely fine. She's 17 so usually sorts her own out so that was a big test!

Now sitting with a huge mug of cherry fruit tea and waiting as long as i can before my own dinner. I really can't sleep til late and also can't sleep hungry so want to leave it as late as poss

curveballs · 16/01/2014 18:04

Help, my 2 year old is literally trying to shove chocolate past my lips. Gosh this is tough. Lol

AngieM2 · 16/01/2014 18:14

Nearly time for food, and I've survived.....now I'm definitely feeling some love for this FD! Bring on that slinky dress and champagne for tomorrow's NFD....and not forgetting the weigh in tomorrow.

Coveredinweetabix · 16/01/2014 18:18

TiP, Betsey, BigChoc, Bssh, MrsF and all of those who have been doing this for a while - sorry for the shout out but I didn't want my question to get overlooked in the traffic. Have any of you who have been doing this for a while got anaemic? For the last five or so days I have really struggled with massive waves of tiredness when I just have to sit down and would like to sleep but can't as I'm either at home with the toddler & pre-schooler or at work. The only time I have ever felt like this before, I was anaemic. I'm wondering if by having less of everything in general, I'm also having less iron. Although I'm not sure if that logic can actually work as I was calorie counting for the best part of a year so generally eating less and wasn't anaemic then. I'm feeling dreadful. I don't usually take any vitamins or supplements but perhaps I should introduce a general one as my nails have been dreadful this winter too.

Also, those of you who no longer crave sweet foods etc, how long did that take? I haven't managed one NFD below TDEE since Christmas. I think that's partly as we still have Xmas junk in the house so it's there and because I got the taste of it again over Xmas.
Sorry for this being so me, me, me but I've been quite concerned over the past few days.

Betsey - a brilliant summary of your year. Well done!

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2014 18:23

just had my dinner - I have a weekly phone meeting with my boss at 6:30 thurs and wouldn't want to subject her to tummy rumbles. asda Thai chicken noodles with extra spinach, and some extra cooked lime-and-something chicken. Got a Satsuma and some tea, and enough milk in my jug for the bedtime cup. Smile

BetsyBell · 16/01/2014 18:31

covered Do you eat at all in the day or do you save all your calories for the evening? I haven't encountered symptoms you've described but I do feel wonky if I fast longer than 20ish hours. I can get through if I have to but it is a slog. If it's happening every fast day then you do need to investigate. Definitely start with a good vitamin supplement to see if that helps. It could be a virally thing - plenty of weird, non-specific illnesses out there at the moment. Vitamins wouldn't do any harm in any case.

Hope you feel better soon x

lubeybooby · 16/01/2014 18:32

I've scrapped my tuna salad idea and I'm having a venison burger (no bun) with onions and mushroom and loads of veg. Wanted something I could shove in the oven and have it take a while to cook to force me to wait longer... half an hour to go, come on 7pm... leaves me enough cals for half a pot of olives before bed too.

my last FD I got to 6.40pm so this will be a slight improvement :o

BetsyBell · 16/01/2014 18:32

Thanks for the nice words about my summary - hope it's useful for anyone struggling.

Eatriskier · 16/01/2014 18:33

covered From what I can tell my iron has been ok throughout doing 5:2 plus I've seen big improvements in my B12 anaemia. Sorry. Though I am trying very hard to make sure I take vitamin supplements especially on fast days. Having said that any iron anaemia I've suffered from has always (other than during pregnancy) been pretty random and never tied to changes in food habits.

BetsyBell · 16/01/2014 18:36

Sounds lush lubeybooby :)

lubeybooby · 16/01/2014 18:40

and now I can smell it cooking I'd happily fight a pack of wolves to get to it... come on 7pm!!

Gluezilla · 16/01/2014 18:54

Had a second good FD

Mango and a couple of strawberries chopped plus green tea for breakfast.
Miso soup ( half a sachet of paste otherwise too strong and cheese and chive rice cake for lunch
Half a chicken breast plus green salad and a tsp of salad cream for dinner.
Tons of Pukka tea .
Came in at 508 Smile

Really enjoyed the inspiring stories up thread .
I agree that this WOE is making me more mindful of what I am eating generally.
Have stocked up on fish and some lean pork for this weeks NFD.
Have yet to tell DH there will be no shepherds pie, bolognaise or fish and chips any time soon!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 16/01/2014 18:59

Errol - zerocoke - is that zero calories but full of aspermante? (can't spell it, I mean the fake sugar stuff.)

CoveredinWeetabix- I have the odd day where I could cry I am so tired but it isn't every day and isn't necessarily a FD.

I have had my butternut squash risotto from Waitrose. It tasted amazing because it was lovely and amazing because no food all day other than 2 small cake things I was giving the kids and wanted to try - minimal calories. My dinner was 345 calories I think.

2 minutes lubeybooby!!
