Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

This is the miso soup recipe I used, it seems great for a fd miso broth

I drank two litres of water today, 5 herbal teas and two pints of carbonated water....I'm not sure how much more I can drink but I will try on my next fd.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2014 21:14

Mumra - that sounds like enough liquid TBH. Do you normally drink tea or coffee? If so, do have it on FDs as well, you don't need caffeine withdrawal!

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2014 21:18

I just had one of these sachets in boiling water - no extra stuff, for a princely 18 cals. (got it from sainsbos, not online!). I think that's the one ... it had tiny pieces of seaweed not like that picture.

BsshBossh · 09/01/2014 21:23

Fat burning kicks in after 12-18 hours of fasting according to a recent interview with Drs Mattson, Mosley and Longo - the IF guys!. So if you can hold off eating to around that period you'll start burning body fat more quickly.

Successful FD for me today. Broke my fast earlier than usual at 5pm (20 hours) with a banana as I felt really weak and still had two more hours until DD's bedtime. Have now also had a bowl of pea and ham soup. Delicious. Now 3 NFDs in a row - whoop!

MorrisZapp · 09/01/2014 21:35

I have a question too! (Waves hand)

Once we reach target weight, logic would suggest we can eat tdee every day and stay the same? If not then tdee isn't really tdee?

Hope this makes sense.

CJMommy · 09/01/2014 21:35

Ok so nearly at the end of second FD and have had 548 cals which included a delicious sirloin steak and salad for tea Smile. I am feeling hungry now and would happily eat my arm. However, off to bed instead!

Having difficulty keeping up with this thread as it moves so fast but will do my best!

Looking forward to my NFD tomorrow!

TalkinPeace · 09/01/2014 21:43

Morrisszap
I hit target weight a year ago
I still fast because my TDEE is now very low
so to enjoy wine at the weekend I fast in the week

BobPatSamandIgglePiggle · 09/01/2014 21:45

I have a question - when does nfd kick in?

Just done 2nd fd - had dinner at 7.30 last night, lemon water all day then dinner (grilled chicken breast, a few oven chips (naughty?? But had nothing else in) and some leftover salad)

What time do you start nfd? Do i have nothing else tonight then start nfd tomorrow?

First fd on Tuesday was totally easy - today I've though about food more but not bad and feel great.

I'm too lazy to mess on with calorie counting during the day so think fasting straight through is better for me. Going to investigate the miso soup though!

BetsyBell · 09/01/2014 21:48

nfd starts tomorrow bobPat

Mumraathenoisylion · 09/01/2014 21:50

I only drink decaf tea so definitely not caffeine withdrawal. I just read an interesting article about how it may be linked to low blood sugar levels and my body needs a little more time to adjust but after two fasts the headache should fade. Fingers crossed for the next fd.

MrsFlorrick · 09/01/2014 22:05

Just checking in.

This thread is mega busy Grin I do love the chat here and the support. Thanks To you all.

Not fully up on thread yet.

Impromptu mini fast here. Not intended but I was 16:8 so no breakfast. And I forgot lunch as was busy with guinea pigs laundry and rearranging some lounge furniture.

Dinner was a 275 cal Waitrose spinach cannelloni. And a handful of almonds. All in at 700 cals.

Just as well as DH and I are going to a special dinner with private chef on Sat and I expect to clock up mega calories Grin

MrsFlorrick · 09/01/2014 22:11

Part way to catching up on thread. Shit are you all so hungry you'd get the little piggies!???!!

Grin

Cuckoo. What are you like? Stuffed piggies. Just think of my 4 yo DD and the stream of tears down her little
Face (guilt guilt). Wink

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 09/01/2014 22:15

ELR - you did better than me. I have had chocolate, some home made bread and some peanuts tonight. I will cheekily claim a NSV though as I haven't felt guilty.

ZZZ - I started in August, weighing 12 stone 4lbs.

BsshBossh - I didn't think I HAD a familiar weight but come to think of it I went from 14 stone at 9 months pregnant to 11 stone something when he was 9 weeks old and I am not stuck at 11 stone 6....

DottiestDotty - don't worry, you won't feel crap every FD. Your body gets used to it.

BobPatSamandIgglePiggle · 09/01/2014 22:17

Thanks Betsy :-)

Off to bed before i kill DH then. He's a skinny mini and has munched his way through 2 packets of crisps, a crunchie, a bread roll with chocolate spread and the last of the Xmas cake since his dinner!

MrsFlorrick · 09/01/2014 22:17

Bigchoc. I've had the piggies out this afternoon on our home made assult course. The DC are training them in ninja tactics.

They are currently taking the first watch over the choc stores (vastly increased with Xmas choc!).

BigChocFrenzy · 09/01/2014 22:30

Thanks, Cuckoo.
It'll be a fiddly job shoving enough choc up 2 guinea pigs bums, but I'll give it a go - sans butter, as you remember that nauseates me.
Must buy a culinary syringe. Anyone measured a guinea pig's aperture lately ? Don't feel I can ask MrsF.
Hmm
Well done all FDers who managed today.

BetsyBell · 09/01/2014 22:30

BobPat I think it would perfectly acceptable to smother DH while he sleeps after all thatShock such cruelty!

I'm even more impressed with you now - you've shown such restraint!

OP posts:
RavenousRunner · 09/01/2014 22:32

Hmm, was doing very well till I got home - DH made very nice chicken and barley soup, and I couldn't resist the bread and wine along with it. Not much of either, but definitely not a proper FD any more. At least I'm still pretty hungry so I can't have gone that far astray.

Monday is another day.

MrsFlorrick · 09/01/2014 22:33

New people. I will greet you all individually once I've caught up.

I just want to say that you don't have to go for the 500 cals hell for leather.

I'm a big wimpy person. And when I started I started doing mini fasts. Ie under 1000 cals and worked my way down towards 500. I still lost weight. And there were obvious health benefits. I used to have high blood pressure and its now low.

You can ease yourself into this. Don't make yourself ill (to Bumbum) by going at it too hard.

And you work your way into it. I can now easily do liquid only fasts (24 hours only not 36 like the hard core long term 5:2ers). And I can slip in an extra FD without barely noticing.

It quickly becomes a way of life without having to obsess and plan and worry about.

Chin up to those of you who feel your starting/current weight is really high and you won't get there. You WILL and it will be so much quicker than you ever imagine not to mention easier.

The poster today who went for a weigh in. 5'10" and 17st. To you I say I started out at same weight and same height (twins). And that was after DS was born so less than 2.5 years ago.
I tried lots of different diets. I've been 5:2 since August. I can stick to it and I am now 11.4st whic is 6lbs off goal weight (would be similar for you).

At first you lose weight much more quickly so you will reduce your size. I know you will find it hard to believe but take heart.

And while you make progress we are all here for you. Grin

Do pop over to Bigchocs workout thread and get some tips. Working out (what ever type of exercise you choose) really helps.

MrsFlorrick · 09/01/2014 22:36

Yeah yeah Bigchoc. All the brave talk. But can you face off the Florrick Ninja piggies??!! Wink

zedzedzed · 09/01/2014 22:49

That was me Mrs F That's an amazing loss.

Yeah, I guess now I've stopped snotting I've figured out that it took nearly 3 years to make my two babies and the fat that came along for the ride, so it may take that to lose it.

I guess it's really hard to believe it will work as I'll be eating so much more on NFDs than any 'diet' ever. But this is for my lifetime, not just for a season so slow and steady is the way...just hope it's not so slow I get all snotty again as misery loves cheese...which I can eat tomorrow! But the fasting's fine really, I'm ok with nothing, knowing I can have it tomorrow, (I'll probably do liquids only and eat a snack in the evening as I get too hungry once I start otherwise!) Thanks for posting, really good to hear. How much of that incredible loss has been on the 5:2 since August when you started?

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 09/01/2014 22:53

dottiest good luck for tomorrow's fast. Definitely try a 1000 cal fast, bf a small baby uses a lot of calories. I found Wednesdays fast went quite well as I was out most of the day with dd so didn't think about food too much.

cuckoo your recipe ideas have finally proved to me what I have long suspected - I will consider eating anything asking as it involves chocolate Grin

toffee sorry you and your dd are sick, it sucks being ill. Your soup recipes sound great.

I might try a fast day tomorrow as I'm planning another busy day. Need to buy some soup though - I think soup will be my saviour on FDs

BigChocFrenzy · 09/01/2014 23:03

MrsF I will plyometrically kick the ass of any Florrick ninja watch-piggies, because I do hundreds of BigGirl press-ups and I box with the hunks !

You've just provided juicy piggies to dip in the choc fondue I shall make from your stores.

< Cuckoo, you twerk away and distract her - we'll share the choc & the piggies >

MrsFlorrick · 09/01/2014 23:08

Zedzed. Only 20lbs.

Buuuuuut. And this is the big but. I tried lots of other diet. Amongst others I lost over 3 stone on Dukan when DS was about a year old.
I fell off the wagon and put 2 stone back on. So this time last year I still had just under 3 stone to lose.

In 2013 I started with 6 months of low carbing then just over 3 months of calorie counting and then 5:2.
Low carb and cal counting was hard work. 5:2 is easy.

And bear in mind the last stone is the hardest to lose. Just ask anyone else on here who have reached goal weight (TIP, Postmanpatscat, Earslaps, Betsy)
And Bssh who is sort of my BMI twin with just a few lbs to go.

Zed zed. Hang on in there. Grin
