Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Eatriskier, my DH loves eggs but only if they're really fresh, good ones (I think he hypersensitized himself to hydrogen sulphide doing 'stinks' in his garage as a boy!) - he really can taste the difference in eggs that seem perfectly OK to me. So don't buy a box and then leave them for a week before trying, in case you're like this. Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2014 17:34

Spilson - if you want some support on the Shred, come on over here. Smile

RavenousRunner · 09/01/2014 17:37

zzz the loo is a good three minute walk, so I figure I'm burning a few extra even without the magic powder Wink

BetsyBell · 09/01/2014 17:38

I've had to boil some eggs to go in mine and DH's fast day salad!

Hello All, jumping in here as am giving 5:2 a go as had shock of my life when I went on scales yesterday after months avoiding them.
I am using MFP to help me keep on track. I am on my first FD today and feel fine. However, I read somewhere on MN about having a 16 hour fast, so I was clear of food between 7pm last night and 11am today. Can someone please explain to me what the 16 hour fast is all about?

Thank you Smile

positively9something · 09/01/2014 17:51

Fast day today And I have already had over 600 cals HmmHmm

I've been eating like crazy all week and it's tom I should probably go to bed now so I can't eat any more. Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2014 17:53

If you've got a sedentary job, getting up every half hour is really good for you... I should drink more just to force me to do it.

ShyGirlie · 09/01/2014 17:56

Thank you erroll!

I thought that's what you meant, but just checking it wasn't something fancy and crucial to the diet that I hadn't heard of!

Is soup better than porridge at lunch time then? Would it be ok just to use shop bought soup e.g. Covent garden or similar - is it only a matter of reading the calories on the packet ? Would save me a lot of faffing around making soup, weighing everything etc!

Pleased with how I got on today, first ever FD! Again, thank you for tip to eat at lunch and dinner instead of breakfast, really don't think I could have managed afternoon stretch otherwise!

Just about to start getting chicken stir fry ready now!

Reading all of this thread carefully to make sure I'm doing it right.

Anticipating eating whatever I fancy tomorrow, guilt free! Smile

BsshBossh · 09/01/2014 18:01

ShyGirlie New Covent Garden soup is fine. Waitrose Love Life ones are yummy too.

bumbumsmummy · 09/01/2014 18:06

Marking place second fast this week doing 5:2

I've just eaten a 315kcal chilli ready meal and its made me sick this is new to me any ideas

TalkinPeace · 09/01/2014 18:17

peanutbutter
Can someone please explain to me what the 16 hour fast is all about?
Its about giving your digestion a break and forcing it to draw on reserves rather than a constant stream of new food.
Its about teaching your insulin regulation system to do its job properly.

how long had you fasted for beforehand?
is it a meal you are familiar with?
how much had you drunk in the hours beforehand?
it may be unconnected

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 09/01/2014 18:26

EatRisky - you really should get in on the egg action. If nothing else because they are the best hangover food! Something in the yolks apparently!

Looks like my fd could come in under 50 cals for first time ever! Hadn't intended it to. In fact was going to change my fd to tmw.

But now, on account of feeling like shite I am off to Bedfordshire with dd for an early night of stories followed by sleep hopefully.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 09/01/2014 18:44

madhairday - welcome.

ZZZ - you remind me so much of my posts when I first started. Obviously I am an expert now losing weight by the second and gaining health benefits constantly HmmGrin. I have lost almost a stone but am currently stuck. Boo.

ELR · 09/01/2014 19:02

Wow finally got to the end!! Clicked on thread 34 a few hours ago and saw new thread so clicked on that and it was on pg 3 every time I reached the end of a page there was another, but finally made it!!
Welcome all newcomers ZZZ you are def in the right place those ponds will be gone before you know it. Whoever over shared made me spit my tea out, so keep the over shares coming it really brightens the day.
toffee Ive been having a blue day today too! really just wanted to eat a big fat cake but resisted and I'm so pleased I did.
betsy I know what you mean about Thursday fast being not quite as controlled as the Monday one, think I've finished on around 700 today but trying not to let that bother me too much.
Roll on tomorrow for normal eating day and weigh in, off for a lovely wRm bath now.

zedzedzed · 09/01/2014 19:11

Ha toffee really? How long have you been doing this?

BigChocFrenzy · 09/01/2014 19:17

Chin up, Zed, you've come to absolutely the right place. Bags of support, expert advice.

Something else to help your health: our 5:2 exercise thread has walking exercises etc for beginners with high BMI or other issues; it's not just for gym bunnies. Pop over and see us sometime.

We're all rooting for you !

Very rarely do we get flabbergasted by a question, so congrats to Eat - you managed it, chum !
NFD eggs taste best fried, with the white firm, the yolk slightly runny. Of course, a fried egg or 2 or 3 should be accompanied by their DPs: fried bacon, mushrooms, toms, wholegrain toast.
Eggs are such a high quality protein that they are the "gold standard" against which all others are measured. Go to work on an egg !

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 09/01/2014 19:28

FD3 and urghhhhhhhhhh, feeling pretty sorry for myself.

Waiting for DH to come back and have dinner together a bit later, so am hungry! Got to the gym and did 10 minutes of abs class but then absolutely couldn't face the treadmill (keen runner!), so came home Sad

Also putting undue pressure on myself for tomorrow's weigh-in at office fat club. Just want a good result after 3 FDs... It also means I have wait to have breakfast at work, when on the last two fast days I was up an hour early to cook myself a yummy breakfast.

eatriskier do you eat pinenuts? Because I personally think pinenuts have an eggy taste! or am I just telling myself that because I don't have eggs on my salad now I'm vegan?

NotAsTired · 09/01/2014 19:28

eatriskier I haven't eaten eggs in their pure form a long time too, but not quite since childhood. I get really bad stomachache after I eat them in pure form. Sometimes, also with cakes and other eggy things like egg fried rice or pancakes.

If you haven't eaten them for a long time, eggs can taste/smell really strong. Like others have said, soft boiled eggs are probably the way to go. Good luck!

BigChocFrenzy · 09/01/2014 19:31

Tip Thanks for the Carbonara recipe, that actually looks sufficiently simple to be BigChoc-proof.

Cuckoo So good to have the 2nd half of our double act return.
Gimme a CLENCH !
Smile
MrsF says she has bought guinea pigs and trained them to guard the choc stores on her cellar.
Well, I know venison with chocolate goes well.
With your creative gastronomic talents, what would be your recipe for roast guinea pig with chocolate ?

BetsyBell · 09/01/2014 19:32

ELR I've been picking away at nuts and seeds and berries, oh and 2 crackers with butter Blush while clearing the kitchen. Frankly I'll be lucky if I come in at under 1000 today. Ah well.

mscnile · 09/01/2014 19:34

Nearly 200 posts before I even get here, you guys talk too much!

NFD here, been a bit of a pig, club sandwich and fries for lunch (employer paying, seemed rude to refuse!) plus a couple of biscuits and now wine but still around TDEE so it'll do.

Need to catch up with y'all now...

mscnile · 09/01/2014 19:36

Incidentally, the lunch made me feel really ill afterwards so I won't be doing it again

BsshBossh · 09/01/2014 19:37

Toffee do you always get stuck on your current weight? My average adult weight is around 11.5 stones - that's the weight I've most constantly been for the longest part of my adult life. Last year, after having lost a good amount of weight, I stalled for 4 whole months. Guess what weight I stalled at? Yep, 168 lbs or 12 stones. It's like my body reached that weight and thought "Hello familiar weight, it's comfortable here; think I'll stick around here for a while!" It must have been my body's setpoint weight. I didn't change a thing, just carried on dieting my usual way (this was pre-5:2) and after 4 months I suddenly lost 2 lbs.

madhairday · 09/01/2014 19:39

Thanks for the welcome and advice re low carbing - this is going to be so helpful and inspiring.

I have 1.5 stone to lose, decided it was getting daft when my jeans wouldn't do up after christmas Blush

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2014 19:39

what would be your recipe for roast guinea pig with chocolate ?
I bet somewhere in the pre-Colombian south/central American civilizations they would have had some.
