Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Just popping in after a terrible day with a non-sleeping teething baby and a tantruming toddler! Anyway, despite that I have not resorted to treating my frustration with food and have completed another fast day.

Since last week, I've lost another 0.6kg so this WOL does really work!

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 21:54

Hi Peplum,
You're do right. I'm still waiting...
Smile
Well no, I'm not better yet. So I'll have to get to sleep very soon.

One more peek and if she's not there then I'll leave Toffee to Sausage and just hope for the best.Grin

Southeastdweller · 13/01/2014 21:55

I'm fasting tomorrow so this old-timer will gladly try to keep the newbie Tuesday fasters in check Grin.

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 21:55

Should say 'you're so right'

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 21:56

Well, DH is away from home for work, staying in a B&B tonight, he very sweetly offered to try a FD today (I said to wait till he's at home and I'll cook him something yummy within FD cals, but he insisted).

He only had coffee and water all day (since 9pm last night) and finally ate at 8pm...a beef curry...and rice AND a half Guiness!

I can't stop smiling, bless him, what a plank, I think he panicked when there was no salad on the old man pub menu. But he really did do brilliantly...right up until his 1100cal 'healthy' choice dinner.

He's game though and will try again on Thurs, but WITH me this time. Good boy, I feel so positive for him as this may really help his cholesterol, heart and maybe even his wee man tum. Lifestyle victory for Zed's Boy. Smile

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 22:03

Great news zedzed.Smile
I'm away now zzz zzz (waves good night ) from me

BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2014 22:21

Toffee If you are not hungry, don't eat on an FD. You can have those Lindt balls for dessert tomorrow - no snacking
Just hide them from everyone !

For NFDs, you should aim to average your TDEE over the 5 days, or at least the TDEE of your goal weight (since there won't be a really big difference in your case)

Poor Dino, what a nightmare, but you womanfully resisted comfort eating. Well done, you.

Zed Your DH, bless him ! Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2014 22:24

Toffee That choc Options drink is only 40 cals, if you have some, or unsweetened cocoa made with water and just a splash of milk.

hopefulgum · 13/01/2014 22:27

Have just caught up on 5 pages of reading and it seems there's lots of patting on the back to do!

BigChoc - wow! Amazing SV and NSV's there! Woo Hoo! I am so inspired!

Congratulations to Newbies on completed fast days, and other scale victories. Zed, great news that you have DH on board. My DH is on board too, which does make it easier. Though he finds the fasting very easy where I actually do get rather hungry, especially near dinner time. He eats whatever I eat plus a glass on wineShock I hope it helps him lose his man-tum. It has grown substantially over the years and I worry about his chances of diabetes, cancer, stroke or heart disease as he has all those in his family history. I think if I stick with it he will too.

Another FD completed for me. For lunch I made a soup with onion, leek, zucchini, cauliflower and watercress. Was very delicious and at only 60 calories per bowl, I had two bowl fulls! No deprivation there. Dinner was a beautiful Laksa made with seafood and miracle noodles (which, though smelly when I opened the packet, once rinsed, where fine and enjoyable in the laksa). I was quite full after dinner and clocked in at 490 calories for the day. Yay!

Today I am planning to stay within TDEE, but will make room for a rhubarb clafoutis from Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall's recipe. Can't wait!

I have just read the Michael Mosley thread about exercise and now I feel more motivated to give it a try. I shall buy the book and have a read of it asap.

Good luck to fasters today Smile

BsshBossh · 13/01/2014 22:31

Well done today's fasters (especially MrZedZed) and losers. My FD is now complete, liquids only all day then veg soup, apple and slice of wholemeal. 2 NFDs now whoop!

Jobyloo · 13/01/2014 22:37

Just catching up, well done if you've managed to fast today and good luck if you're doing it tomorrow.

Have managed my first 500 fast ...well it was 496 ...so that's another first for me. The other fasts I've done were 600-650. Was really hungry when I woke up but managed to keep distracted and then went for a 90min walk to get me out of the house and away from the kitchen. Lunch was homemade leek & potato soup and didn't have that until 4pm and then a smaller version of Sunday lunch (leftovers) minus the carbs for my supper. Lol there might be some unwanted side effects from the amount of veg that was on my plate Wink Blush but I certainly haven't felt deprived.

Jobyloo · 13/01/2014 22:39

Bssh such a lovely feeling to know tomorrow is a NFD Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2014 22:40

devoncreamtea , Amelia lots of shredders over here. Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2014 22:41

I'm under 500 so far but have some milk left for my bed-time decaf tea. Smile.

ShyGirlie · 13/01/2014 22:46

2nd fast finished!! Ate the exact same as my first one (porridge, chicken stir fry) as I know that " worked". Need to try to think of something different for 3rd fast though cos I know I'll get bored soon.

Any nice lunch and dinner combos? Exact recipe / measurements and calories needed as really only finding my way! And I'm not a natural cook!

Really hoping for a SV on thurs to motivate me...

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 13/01/2014 23:13

curved thanks for the sympathy. The child just doesn't seem to need sleep. She only sleeps 11 possibly 12 hours and dropped her daytime nap well before she turned 2.

We try getting her back and get her sleeping through the night but the slightest thing cocks it up again - colds, change in bed time routine, itchy feet (give me strength). Anyway she'd better sleep tonight tomorrow is a much needed fast day.

Remind me to throw miso at zed tomorrow, in my sleep deprived state I may forget Grin

EarSlaps · 14/01/2014 06:53

Mine aren't big sleepers either exhausted, it's tough. Oh well, people tell me it's a sign of intelligence!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/01/2014 07:33

LilyJoandMe - Hello! I did post that I had survived my FD but then went off as watching 24 with DH. I had 6 peanuts while watching but....

drum roll

I finally have got off the stuck ladder and have lost.

Yesterday I was 11 stone 8.2.
This morning I am 11 stone 5.6 ShockShock.

Today I will eat mindfully and do some Wii once I am back from the school run then crack on with cleaning the bathrooms.

Good luck chocupid.

Well done DinoSnores. That is a NSV!

BigChoc - I think my TDEE is about 1700.

Well done Jobyloo!

Good look to all fasters.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 14/01/2014 07:37

That's great news toffee it's quite a decent loss too. Well done.

frenchfancy · 14/01/2014 07:40

Well done toffee

zedzedzed · 14/01/2014 07:41

Grrrrr...breakfast TV has been mis-informing/rubbishing this woe without providing any evidence for eg; a GP saying, it's just another fad and you don't lose fat on it just water and glucose. No mention of the extraordinary health benefits.

Doc V is on it later, maybe that'll redress the balance, just in the interest of fairness.

Grrrr. Almost put me off my NFD toast.

zedzedzed · 14/01/2014 07:44

Mega congrats toffee

CinammonGirl · 14/01/2014 07:46

Good luck chocupid and south! I'll be posting here later if im struggling!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2014 07:49

Wow, if you only lose water and glucose, some of you must have started out as bags of syrup. Grin

turkeybaby · 14/01/2014 07:49

I woke up this morning (after my first FD) feeling like i had a hangover. I think it was dehydration but has anyone else felt this?

Good luck to everyone fasting today
