Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Had a massive fail on my FD yesterday Sad did fab all day then had a slice of pie for evening Meal - so far so good then dd1 brings dh a giants millys cookie for his birthday and I eat about a hands size shape and TWO Terry's chocolate orange segments, which are 130 calls each Sad

Because I've been off sugar any way for past week I've not got banging head ache because of overload. Shit.

Don't know whether to try again today or leave t till tomorrow Sad

MelanieCheeks · 14/01/2014 07:53

BBC Brekafast is so lightweight.

Comment from a viewer "I tried it for one day, and felt faint"

One whole day? Wow, thats a valid scientific study then Hmm

Jobyloo · 14/01/2014 07:56

Wow toffee great result! errol nearly choked on my tea with the syrup line! turkey could it be carb withdrawal? Probably not dehydration if you drank enough yesterday. Well done on doing your first FD Smile

Just having a coffee then hitting the gym! OMG chock what a fab exercise thread. You've all really fired me up!!!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/01/2014 07:57

It isn't a DIET!! Angry.

Tinkertailor1 - don't feel bad. We all have days where things don't go to plan. It isn't a failure.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 14/01/2014 07:58

Thanks for the sympathy earslaps it would be nice to think the lack of sleep is in a way a good thing.

Trying and failing not to weigh myself everyday so I don't get annoyed by fluctuations.

Tinkertaylor1 · 14/01/2014 08:04

turkey I feel like this too , but I had plenty of carbs last night ! Blush
I'm going to put it down to dehydration.

Thanks toffee was really shocked how I felt after eating the choc , maybe I need to be on a all out ban on it like that as I could have happily ate the lot. Had to get dh to move them!

I like the lightness I felt yesterday , now my head just feels swollen!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/01/2014 08:04

Has anyone else found the 5:2 helps with PMT? Completely unexpectedly I have come on this morning but I checked my calendar and I am due today. I don't remember having my day from hell I normally do the week before (though if I remember to take my Agnus Castus enough that does help) and had no clue I was due Confused.

3ismylot · 14/01/2014 08:04

Hi all I am going to give fasting a try and would love to join in with you guys :)

I am going to do things slightly different to start and see how I do and give eat stop eat a go, this means that I will eat normally up until 4pm today and then stop eating until 4pm tomorrow night, then I will eat normally all day on thursday and then stop eating at 4pm on friday night etc.
I was trying to do paleo and as much as I love it I really miss having a nice cup of tea or having the option of a treat so thought this might be a good idea plus I like the idea of the health benefits Grin

If the eat stop eat doesnt work then I will try traditional 5:2 x

postmanpatscat · 14/01/2014 08:08

Welcome 3ismylot Are you trying to lose weight? There's a risk of not creating a calorie deficit with that system, unless you are careful.

I'm 2lbs down after yesterday's fast which puts me back where I was a week ago. And it also puts me back where I was six months ago...have definitely got the hang of maintaining!

Good luck to today's fasters.

southeast how's life in the new pad?

postmanpatscat · 14/01/2014 08:09

Hooray toffee told you not to give up hope!

BetsyBell · 14/01/2014 08:13

Yay, Toffee - you just had to keep the faith!

frenchfancy · 14/01/2014 08:13

tinker don't beat yourself up, give it until tomorrow before you fast again. The fact that you did well all day is the important part, it shows that you can do it. The pie for evening meal was probably your downfall, it would be difficult to resist cookies and chocolate after that. Try having a more vegetable or protein based meal and see if it helps your will power.

zedzedzed · 14/01/2014 08:21

I may need a talking to at some point...I feel like I'm going to discover I'm a very silly cult member, brainwashed by this positive thread and shunned by 'sensible society' for adopting this way of eating.

I know I shouldn't care, I know it's not a diet and I know the way I feel, so far, is miles better than on any fecking 'fad' diet over the last 30yrs, especially much better than on a traditional Calorie Restricted diet...but I've been hoodwinked before (Atkins for 9months, plenty of science backing that up, totally unsustainable, what an idiot).

I also know how idiotic and slow on the uptake the mainstream media and medical fraternity can be (you only have to look at the backward and snail-paced rate of change within maternity care and how anything out-with the 'norm' is treated as crunchy and radical despite having centuries of experience to draw on).

Still, I feel wobbly, more than just my blubber would account for...

Birdies · 14/01/2014 08:22

Hi everyone, I'll be starting soon hopefully. Please can I just ask a couple of questions - with the 500 calorie fast days, is it ok to spread the 500 out over the whole day?

And when I've not eaten much in the past, my stomach actually aches with hunger - does that happen to you each time or do you get used to it?

Thanks

Geckos48 · 14/01/2014 08:24

Fasting today! Wish me luck!

Eatriskier · 14/01/2014 08:26

You only lose water and glucose? I must have been carrying around about 6 stone of sugar water then. Nice to know it was never fat eh? Wink Wink Wink

ELR · 14/01/2014 08:26

Morning all, haven't caught up on the thread yet, but just wanted to vent!! Scales are showing a 2.5 gain!! Don't think its right but it's still annoying! We had a new bathroom floor fitted on Friday so the surface is different moved scale around the house and it was different in every room some even by as much as 4lb, it was the same for DH too. It's just so frustrating as now I don't know my weight. Yes I know I can measure which I have done and I'm the same well maybe 1/4 inch less on waist but I want to see a loss!!! Stamps foot like a two year old!
Right off on school run then I've got the chiropractor, hope it doesn't hurt.....
Will catch up on thread later this morning, good luck to all fasters and enjoy your lovely food non fasters.

Tinkertaylor1 · 14/01/2014 08:26

Thanks french the pie was actually supposed to be for dh birthday tea but tbh I think I purposely chose it as its high carb content IYKWIM .

Is there any therapists on the thread Wink

Gah, I'll eat sensibly today and start tomorrow but then I'll be rushing to get a FD in but over weekend will be tough, as when weekend arrives, I vacate the kitchen and dh will take over do usually take away or home made curry Blush

Onwards and up wards!

Eatriskier · 14/01/2014 08:35

birdies my advice is start slow. Split your calories into 2 or 3 meals to start. It isn't easy at the start but once you get your first fast under your belt the feeling of achievement will get you through the next ones and then eventually you'll find hunger pangs just irritating. Try to remember that hunger comes in waves, it isn't a permanent state

Birdies · 14/01/2014 08:46

Thanks eat. Do you find being hungry keeps you awake at night (so on fast days it's harder to get to sleep)?

Eatriskier · 14/01/2014 08:50

I did get it occasionally at the start birdies but after a few weeks I started to sleep like the proverbial baby (not the real life ones we hear about a lot here Wink). But I think a lot of that is about finding your own balance. You need to experiment to find what suits you best. I quickly realised for me it was saving my calories for an evening meal, and finding what is the most filling for those calories, which helps stave off the night time hunger. Though fasting also resets the appetite so many of us are quite satisfied after our 500 cals (and some one a lot fewer).

Geckos48 · 14/01/2014 09:02

Back up to 116 this morning :( gutted

Darnley · 14/01/2014 09:06

I also have gained, but compared to my starting weight, it's an overall loss, so YAYYY...

nFD for us today, but planning on being sensible. Still off the wine and feeling very virtuos (polishes halo).

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2014 09:10

zedzed, lots of us are members of 'sensible society'. I'm so sensible that I don't watch breakfast TV Wink. My TV was on this morning for the sole purpose of shred DVD - try that instead (hey, two cults for the price of one! Grin)

nouvellevag · 14/01/2014 09:18

Morning all! First FD today, eep. I normally do the nursery run and then eat when I get home, so my stomach is unimpressed with me right now. Placating it with a mug of Options at 38 cal, then will be a couple of eggs with lettuce and celery at lunch, and carrot soup for dinner. Here we go.

Cursing DH for buying three boxes of reduced mince pies.
