Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Thanks tip I have watched it again today already as I want to have my OH try it for health reasons and wanted to understand the science part thoroughly.

I understand the importance of differentiating between health/longevity implications and weight-loss; it's a minefield when dealing with people who have already,(me included) got previous for extreme/faddy dieting and are desperate or temporarily vulnerable. It's quite a responsibility not to mis-inform or allow misinformation to spread like mass hysteria through a thread. So thanks for being here, moderating a little...I'm not saying it was needed here just that it's lovely to know there's a moderate underpinning here from most posters just in case a wee 16yr old with body issues strays in, skim reads, and thinks she has to fast 5 days a week!

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 18:58

I don't mean you tossed!

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 12/01/2014 19:04

Don't worry zed!Grin

I do get the faddy tendencies thing, however I find when I am on IF I am most relaxed about food, rather than spending 90% of the week sticking to slimming world or some such bollocks and leading a miserable food obsessed life!

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 12/01/2014 19:05

Frumpet - have you got myfitnesspal ? Download the app, they have the calorie count for pretty much everything on there.

ImABadGirl · 12/01/2014 19:08

tossed I do ADF and I have 4 fasts one week and 3 another, it got messed up last week but will be back on track this week.

I make sure I have right up to my tdee on NFD so this feels like I'm not depriving myself at all.

Although I also incorporate 16:8 into every day, this just feels natural cause I've not eaten breakfast for years and close the kitchen at 8pm.

Geckos48 · 12/01/2014 19:22

I only fast a maximum of 3 days a week. That is enough for me right now.

I do it because I am a compulsive over eater and right now it is easier for me to 'allow' that side of me to do its thing (really only one day a week) the rest of the time I am moderate with food.

I also find calorie counting tedious and soul destroying.

I think that people should be encouraged in what they are doing, not told they aren't doing it right or that they need to work out their TDEE and count every calorie again (a bug bear of mine on the Facebook page)

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 19:23

Mosley initially did a 4-day fast to see if doing so every couple of months would bring the health benefits he wanted. When he found those benefits didn't last long enough, he moved to weekly 5:2.

The health benefits of IF mainly come from hormesis:
i.e. a high load, alternating with recovery periods, can switch the body to repair mode provided:

  • the load is not too high
  • it is not applied too long or too often
  • there are sufficiently long and frequent recovery periods in between

If someone is doing regular IF, then several of us here worry that 4 FDs in a single week may be too much stress for the body.

Tinkertaylor1 · 12/01/2014 19:23

Hello all!

I'm a jump shipper! Started the low carb /paleo diet. Did it fir a week , but struggled. I'm a complete sugar addict so really struggled, head aches and feeling shit. Also had did a shop for the rest of family and didn't plan for me so was starving half the time.

I must say, I did see a difference in just a week but can't see its longevity - for me !

This one does seem better, I could enjoy a biccy with my tea ect. I can easily get to lunch with out anything so I think I'm gonna climb on board ...if y'all have me?

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 19:25

Regular ADF is different, since Varady has done many scientific studies to show it is safe. However, she moves to another system for maintenance.

TalkinPeace · 12/01/2014 19:25

zedzed
I have a 15 year old daughter who is built like her dad - ie pretty solid - lean but never petite
I am therefore acutely aware of the pressures to "be skinny" on those who never will be.

Over the last few months I've also been watching a girl at my gym descend into anorexia - all of us just have to bite our tongues, its horrible

I am therefore pretty pedantic about taking the long view
after all, I've not lost any weight in 13 months now Grin

Geckos48 · 12/01/2014 19:26

Welcome tink x

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 19:27

Welcome, Tinker.
5:2 cured my massive choc junk frenzies, so I'm sure you can have the same success. I still enjoy treats, just in much smaller quantities.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 19:31

Errol, Tip In case you miss it ( busy exercise thread too, ) I posted a ref re isometrics and high BP. I found several other refs, so do warn off any nearest & dearest with high BP.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/01/2014 19:31

Welcome Tinker! Good luck with it all.

BsshBossh · 12/01/2014 19:33

Yes, welcome aboard Tinker. It took many months but eventually 5:2 has definitely helped me naturally eat more healthily: I still eat sugar, white processed carbs etc but a lot less of it without even trying. 5:2 has naturally reset my appetite and "cravings".

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 19:37

I hear you 'TIP' my stepdaughter is 16 and built like a whippet...I used to watch her very closely/secretly as there's even more pressure these days...luckily she still eats like a horse, is morbidly terrified of vomiting so no worries bulimic-ly speaking and has a stash of chocolate she picks at...only moderately... she's got it far more sussed than I do! But some of her friends...jeez, one of them is a diabetic but thinks she's fat so is wasting away to a size 4-6...it's very hard to watch and very hard to intervene.

X

Tinkertaylor1 · 12/01/2014 19:38

Hello!

I'm going to try every other day fasting , if it doesn't happen I'll still reach that 5:2.
A killer for me is that dh like take away or eating out on weekends so me sitting at the side of him while he is tucking in to a chow main was AWFUL!

I do yogalaties while dd2 is sleeping and that helps massively .

Going Cuba in September so by then all us posters should be ready to wiggle round in bikinis Wink

Well done ladies x

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 19:38
BsshBossh · 12/01/2014 19:48

Tinker if DH orders takeaway on one of your weekend NFDs then you can eat it too!

Tinkertaylor1 · 12/01/2014 19:53

I know this bssh I'm excited!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/01/2014 19:53

I am struggling as the cupboard is full of all the Christmas treats we didn't eat due to being ill.

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 19:54

Have just eaten a 'whatsinmafridge' dinner...scrumptious.

GREEN BEEF:
One sirloin steak with some of the fat removed, cut into strips and marinaded in teriyaki, soy, ginger, chilli, garlic & honey; quick fried rare with 6 halved cherry tomatoes.
Served over steamed, shredded purple broccoli and spring greens, tossed in 2tsp garlicky olive oil with mixed seeds and old limp coriander on top.

Serves 2 at about 525cals each.

Not a FD today but it's what I fancied and I'm trying to persuade OH to try this with me for health/cholesterol reasons. He said it was fecking delicious. NSV?

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 19:57

Toffee if you feel you can't eat them and feel ok about it, or ration them to NFDs, maybe pack them into a cardboard box, tape it up and pop it round to an elderly/appreciative neighbour's house?

Poor you, you seem all scattered.

((hugs))

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/01/2014 20:11

Most are things I bought DH.

I am feeling flat as I haven't taken my tablets today, why I haven't learnt to prioritise it I don't know Hmm.

I have been getting anxious quite a lot lately and while I do have stuff on my mind it is getting a bit much.

BsshBossh · 12/01/2014 20:22

Toffee make sure you remember to take your meds! I'm on thyroxine and have to take it daily so, to remember, I place them next to my hairbrush on my dressing table. This way I remember to take them first thing.
