Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Hi everyone. Not been on for a while.

Dr Michael Moseley was on Sunday Brunch this morning. Anyone see him? I think he is bringing a new book out about exercise. I didn't catch it all, but I think he was saying that you do a little bit every day. I'm thinking just like BigChoc so excellently advises us. [Grin]

Anyway weekly weigh in today and I can confirm that I have lost 1.5 lbs Grin after my first proper week. This week I did the following:

Sun - NFD 16:8 sticking to TDEE of 1900 calories
Mon - FD
Tues - NFD 16:8 sticking to under 1700 calories
Wed - same as tues
Thurs - same again
Fri - mini FD (was supposed to be a FD, but I just couldn't resist a piece of birthday cake that someone brought to work so ended up being 964 calories)
Sat - anything goes (I ate among others 3 donuts, cake and 3 bottles of beer Blush )

The only 2 things I'd like to change this week is a proper FD on Friday and not have as much crap on Saturday.

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 13:32

Thanks for the summary postmanpatscat so was that TDEE what the calculator recommended or less? And WOW 21lbs in 12wks is fabulous, you must be really chuffed.

Thanks too biscuits 1.5lbs is what I'm hoping to achieve weekly too.

Do you thing that 16:8 improves your stats much?

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 12/01/2014 13:39

I'm not sure how much the 16:8 has helped. I just do them because I haven't had breakfast for months so all I've done is stopped eating on a night, but I assume it's had some help.

postmanpatscat · 12/01/2014 13:44

zed I used the MFP calculator and lowered it as my weight reduced. This was almost a year ago though...I'm close to celebrating my 5:2 anniversary 2st lighter!

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 13:53

postmanpat so does that mean you were eating the amount MFP recommended you eat to LOSE weight AND doing two FDs on top of that??

Or were you getting MFP to calculate what to eat to maintain then adding two fast days? Like on this: thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/

Sorry for all the questions! Thanks!

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 14:00

Ah...I guess you set MFP to maintain? Sorry, got it now!

postmanpatscat · 12/01/2014 14:02

Yes, zed, to maintain. I tracked everything for the first four months or so as I needed to do that for my own peace of mind.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 14:07

Darnley, TossedSalad, as SouthEastDweller advised, please don't do 4 FDs in a week. More is not always better.

You should not go beyond ADF. For newbies, stay with 5:2 at least until you get used to FDs and better eating habits

When I have too many huge meals out, I just add a mini-FD of 1000 cals, like today. I did ADF just over the holidays as a temporary tool, before reverting to 5:2.

Just for info: I started 5:2 partly to stop the huge junk Frenzies - boomeranging from years of low carb (shows the danger of too much restriction). So, my first 10 lb lost were in spite of several 4-5000 cal choc junk Frenzies, but I never went beyond 4:3.
5:2 cured me of junk Frenzies, but I still enjoy a few treats every week.
Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 14:12

Biscuit I posted earlier (difficult to see on this BUSY thread !) that I have Dr Mosely's new Fast Exercise book for 5:2ers and I am posting snippets on the 52ExerciseThread

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 12/01/2014 14:27

Sorry BigChoc it's over on page 1. I've not been on the exercise thread for a bit. Will have a read. I've not read the book I got before Christmas yet Blush just wondering what he was saying really as I missed most of it. I assume it's in his new book.

BIG SHOUT OUT TO Somewhere and Mummyof2 (waves like mad woman) Grin
I always read your posts Thanks . Think sometimes it's just pot luck who is replied to, because to include all, would mean epic posts and I for one don't need any encouragement there!
But I can honestly say, that every contributor plays a role in the support this thread offers. For me anyway!

Bsssh Can't think of suitable enough words to sum up your story in pics. But I'll start with WOW! and you look absolutely AMAZING! I can't wait for the day I look like that, and have that same definition on my face (again). So inspiring!

Was where are you in cycle? It can really mess things about. But keep up the work you may just be a slow starter. Thanks

Covered Well done! Excellent work!

I'mabad 8lb Woohoo! Grin

Hello to all Newbies!! Welcome, get stuck in and Good Luck!

To everyone else Cake Brew I was trying to keep up on Friday evening from my sick bed and was mightily cheered to feel the buzz radiating from everyone.

Regardless of who posts, or who is name checked in those posts, I suspect I may speak for the majority of people watching this thread when I say, it is silently working so much more than will ever be typed about on here!

Hope that made some kind of sense. Brain bone is definitely NOT connected to the hand bone today!

Tip Thanks X

Am off to cook a roast. Lamb today. Need pudding inspiration though. Toffee if you're out there. Inspire me Grin

It all starts proper tomorrow Fasters, so look out!!

MazzleDazzle · 12/01/2014 15:06

Straighten you back!

Well, before I knew it it was 2.30pm and I hadn't eaten today! So might as well make it a fast as opposed to the under 900 cals I was aiming for.

Just had one grilled sausage, spoon of mash and spoon of beans for 300 cals.

Clench!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/01/2014 15:20

Hellooooooooo

BoyCat came back so we went out for a lovely but muddy walk. I was clean as I sensibly wore wellies. Not impressed with DS1 deliberately making himself more muddy on purpose which the washer couldn't cope with so had to run it empty to clean it and now rewashing everything. I pre-rinsed it too.

Cuckoo - normally we have a crumble but I have been using my new recipe book and did vanilla cupcakes for pudding today with vanilla frosting and butterflies/Christmas iced toppers/ice cupcake topper. We had our roast dinner yesterday and I made mango and strawberry cupcakes. They had fruit in the centre and frosting on top. We had shepherd's pie with sliced crispy potatoes on top instead of mash for a change.

I feel I have completely lost my way. Feel a failure and upset. Just pointless ate some crap quality chocolate. Want toast and crackers and cheese - pure comfort as not hungry.

postmanpatscat · 12/01/2014 15:27

toffee good news about the cat but do NOT beat yourself up about your food intake. Wanting something but recognising you are not hungry, so not eating it, is a massive achievement. Are you fasting tomorrow?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/01/2014 15:42

I really need to fast tomorrow and will have to make myself as I am feeling pretty useless at the moment.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 15:42

Toffee You are absolutely not a failure. You just need to chill and not let things get to you.
You cook delicious meals for your family (lucky devils !) and you run around doing everything for them (and for that tyke Boy Cat). I hope you eat these yummy meals yourself on NFDs, so you have some treats too.

Just keep doing 5:2, try to get some sleep and your plateau will shift. I think Bssh said she plateaued for months at one stage.
We are all rooting for you.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 15:45

I finished my notes on Mosely's exercise book, so several epic posts (!) on the exercise thread.
I recommend the book, lots of explanation about science, so not dumbed down like Varady's ADF book. His original 5:2 book was quite good for science background too.

postmanpatscat · 12/01/2014 15:58

bigchoc is the book worth getting even for serious exercisers like you and me? Grin

Eatriskier · 12/01/2014 16:13

Thought I'd best let you all know, given that I tried to break the internet starting with this thread Wink, that I tried out scrambled eggs at lunch time. Decided to take some inspiration from a few posts so lots of butter and used some chorizo and other bits figuring even if I didn't like them too much the chorizo would keep me happy - also didn't cook them until they looked fully cooked iygwim. Well it turns out they were lovely, especially with chorizo! Very filling and have kept me quite full (along with the soda bread that also accompanied them). So thanks everyone for attempting to answer my unanswerable question!

Am keeping busy batch cooking myself some fast day meals. Love the convenience of a ready made meal but homemade and yummier.

TalkinPeace · 12/01/2014 16:27

Darnley and tossedsalad
two fast days per week is more than enough to lose weight if you eat reasonably on the other days.

I am concerned that you are treating the "fast days" in an almost bulimic way to counteract gross overeating on the other days.

Please, please, please
go back to the start.
Watch the MM film on BBC
read the starter thread
read the "tips and hints" thread

the whole point of intermittent fasting is that it is about health, not weight loss.
The overweight happen to lose weight, but that is not the reason it has been researched since the 1930's

if you aim to lose more than 1lb per week you will fail and damage your healh

Lecture Over

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/01/2014 16:45

BigChoc - I was less panicking about the stuck weight as I had read others had stuck for a while but what is more upsetting is my head is not in the right place and I am scared of food again, scared of not being able to eat and feel like food is in control of me again Sad.

Baloostika · 12/01/2014 16:56

Welcome to all the newbies.
I do agree wit Tip and BCF more fasts is not better nd does not hasten weightloss. It's a recipe for total failure
It will interest all those wanting to do more fasts that from my experience, I hardly lose 3kg after fasting for a month (spiritual fasts) and eating sensibly during that time.
Wishing us all a great week ahead filled wit God's favor and blessings.
