Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

gecko interesting about the light sleeping. Hasn't bothered me till now - mind you it's only my 4th day.

mummyof2 sorry he's being an arse, they all have their moments. The things that dh does to annoy me are hoarding and procrastinating. Drives me bonkers but he is a good bloke, I still feel lucky to have him after 15 years together.

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 08:35

Well done gecko

Poor mummyof2 Perhaps you should design some sort of Man Casserole, with or without sautéed testicles atop, depending on your TDEE.

TalkinPeace posted her routine like this:(thanks!)
^Monday : no food till supper, 500 calories
Tuesday : TDEE less 10% - no brekky so 16:8
Wednesday : as Tuesday
Thursday : as Monday
Friday : TDEE plus 10% wine but in 16:8
Saturday : relax
Sunday : breakfast and lunch so over TDEE but 16:8^

I found this really helpful, I wonder if anyone else (especially those like me who have/had LOADS to lose like Bsssh) could post their typical week, ESPECIALLY AS IT WAS FOR THE FIRST FEW MONTHS.
Maybe with a wee note about activity and pounds lost and over how long?
I'd reall appreciate it as I'm still unsure I'm doing it right for my size.

I've done my 2 FDs at under 300,yay!

And 2 NFDs at about 1600 (my TDEE's 2264 but I was saving up for the weekend)

I had about 2000 yesterday (goaty cheese salad lunch and small wine in Prezzo, lots of walking on the beach then steak salad dinner and SMALL Butterkist at the cinema).

Today I'm trying, vaguely the 16:8 thing and will aim for about 1800, does 16:8 make a difference to loss has anyone found? (I take it you just stop eating at say 8pm on NFD and don't eat again till say 12pm the next NFD, ie miss night snacks and brekkie?).

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 08:36

Don't know why there's a sad face in the middle of that sentence...

LilyJoAndMe · 12/01/2014 08:36

Morning .
NFD here. Need to get on. But, I like reading the thread before. When I check in I feel part of a team. It's good to feel supported.

Like you say mummyfor2 we're not always able to get that need met from the people around us. EmotIona? eating has definately been one of the reasons behind my weight gain. And so,without the comfort eating I am finding that I have to deal with issues differently. If my feelings are very strong I can find it more difficult to deal with them- food is less of a comforter . So what to do instead ?

Not2bObvious · 12/01/2014 08:38

Morning all. V windy where I am this morning. Just did a read through new entries, everyone seems in good humour, apart from the odd errant dh but that's par for the courseWink
Anyone else got a shocking weekend treat list on the go. Did my mfp for yesterday and before I fessed up, I would have said I thought yesterday was good, eh no-uh. Close to 1000 calories between wine/choc/crisps. The vast majority of my intake was junk, apart from the wine cause that's like fruit rightGrin Gotta stop with the excessive junk buying. Back to 1 bar at a time, and not 200gr bar!!!!
About to make pancakes for brekkie, kids all time favorite, then off to the cinema. Nice relaxed tdee day before what I hope will be a good FD tomorrow. Anyone else up to anything nice?

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 12/01/2014 08:53

Hi all!

Again so sorry no time to read whole thread but did read zed's post and agree posting a synopsis of the week might be useful?

I completed 3rd fast day of the week yesterday, and am down 3.25 lbs! So nothing dramatic, but still something. As far as I am concerned that is me weighed in for the week, as I find it too depressing to weigh after nfd, so won't be weighing tomorrow! Didn't count at all on nfds, so my week went:

Monday: fd - tea and coffee then dinner
Tuesday; nfd no counting
Wednesday: nfd no counting
Thursday: fd - same as mon
Friday: nfd, lots of biscuits and ate out!
Saturday: fd - as others

I am not drinking ATM for dry jan, so that makes weekend fasting easier. I know I can improve things by being more careful on nfds, as I have been a bit of a piggy! But part of me hates having to count of nfds when the previous fd is such hard work! On FDs I tend to drink tea/coffee with skimmed milk & sweetener where poss, then use remaining calories for dinner. On nfds I tend to eat all three meals because unlike others I am ravenous!

I am going to start cooking from my Patrick holford low gl cookbook a lot more. I would highly recommend it, I have never cooked anything that tasted bad from there! That way if I cook from this on nfds I can count the calories in the recipe and save portions for good fd meals.

I am also going to ease myself back into running on Monday. I have had a run of illness since the end of November so have been doing no exercise since then!

Good luck to all for next week! Grin

Darnley · 12/01/2014 08:59

Morning all.

Should fast today as had pizza and lots of wine last night, but will have 4 fast days from tomorrow instead. Really fancy a Sunday roast.

Seem to be getting some heartburn since starting this, is it something to be expected?

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 12/01/2014 09:02

Oh and regarding ready meals, I have used them on fast days before and find them very useful, especially if padded out with a bag of salad!

I intend from now on though as mentioned before to cook low gl meals on nfds, work out calories on mfp, then save appropriately sized portion for a fd meal, so I have something instant and calorie counted.

I can't bring myself to shop or cook on FDs if I can help it! It is hard when you have a family to feed though! Pasta and a jar of good quality sauce has been a lifesaver, and dp just has to sort himself out! He quite enjoys this, as when I cook for him it is always veggie and he isn't!

I make a point of us all sitting down to eat together on nfds though.

ELR · 12/01/2014 09:05

Morning all, just caught up on the thread. Great pic bssh
I'm disappointed not to see one clench come on guys pelvic floors need work!!
Well I've def eaten over tdee fri and sat made a choc and pear cake, kids didn't link it as too rich and DH declared he doesn't like choc cake! So have had to eat nearly the whole thing myself and I'm am seriously not that fond of chocolate cake but it is delish!!
So yesterday DH said he was going to cook the next thing I know we are sitting in the curry house! Was quite good though had a poppadom and one onion bahjee and then only ordered 2 main courses, 1 rice and 1 naan for me DH and 2 dc 's to share and DH had more I actually left slightly peckish!! First time ever.
Thanks for the info bigchoc on the fast exercise looks good. Its DH birthday in a few weeks so will get him the book and will have a proper read when he's done with it.

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 09:06

tossedsalad thanks for that, really interesting. Have you always done 4:3 not 5:2 and did you/do you have a lot to lose?

Over 3lbs lost in a week? That's AMAZING! Well done to you! Hope you enjoy your NFD today.

mummyof2girlsx · 12/01/2014 09:07

Thanks WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted me and DH have been together for nearly 13 years so I guess we're doing something right, but yes he does drive me mad at times!

zedzedzed hmmmm I'm thinking a cookery book.....100 'bloke' recipes Grin

LilyJoAndMe I have always been an emotional eater but 5:2 has definately helped me control it, although I do still have the odd binge when I'm feeling down Blush

Not2bObvious cinema is good call for a cold sunday afternoon, what are you going to watch?? Chilled day at home for us I think, my first day off since last sunday so plan to be very lazy and watch films with the DC

ImABadGirl · 12/01/2014 09:13

Morning all, NFD for me today and I'm planning a lovely breakfast of croissants and eggless fluffy pancakes with a bit of golden syrup and banana Smile

2nd weigh in and total weight loss is 8lb, am very happy especially as I've been eating my TDEE on NFD Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/01/2014 09:19

BigChocFrenzy - BoyCat not yet home but DS2 has said he has seen him today. It was definitely a bite as I asked the vet if it was from jumping and he said no. I have no idea where he is and I am worried he has acquired a second home somewhere that he likes better. I might have to look at tagging him so I can see where he is on line!

Still no weight loss. Will eat today, might have breakfast if I want. Shepherd's Pie half ready for lunch and then we are going out this afternoon and I won't eat again until I am genuinely starving.

Southeastdweller · 12/01/2014 09:25

Darnley You're planning on fasting four days this coming week? Please reconsider. You don't need to and you're going to put your body under too much stress.

Southeastdweller · 12/01/2014 09:29

lily Exercise is great for dealing with issues as well as obviously weight loss and maintenance. I also write in my diary when I can.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 12/01/2014 09:44

Hi zed, the reason I do more than 2 FDs a week is that I regain too much on nfds and lose nothing if I do 5:2!

I am trying to do adf, but last week idid two nfds in a row due to plans etc.

So will attempt 4 FDs this week. l don't have loads to lose, but just before Xmas my bmi was just under 25, now I am about 10lbs heavier! So I want to get rid of that quickly as I feel horrid!

MazzleDazzle · 12/01/2014 10:00

Salivating at I'maBadGirl's breakfast! 8lb is a fantastic weight loss.

Mini FD here for me - aiming for under 900 cals, between hours of 1-6pm. Will make up for yesterday's NFD, which I must say I enjoyed Smile.

I find that even if I really pig out, it helps to count up the cals on MFP. I get a sense of drawing a line under things and feel enthused about the next day.

Thanks Bssh! Just kept on tapping and low and behold, a wonderful pic of you, looking 10 years younger and just so happy Flowers! A real inspiration.

Toffee I hope Boycat returns. I have had many a sleepless night anxiously worried, only for the cat in question to come sauntering in without a care in the world. I view it as preparation for when my 2DCs become teenagers!

MazzleDazzle · 12/01/2014 10:05

And yes, many DHs are not DHs at all and are in fact knobheads. You'll find plenty of support on mumsnet though Smile.

In fact perhaps every marriage certificate should come with a link to mumsnet!

Jobyloo · 12/01/2014 10:17

Lol Mazzle about the link to MNHQ with every marriage certificate! Finding sticking to TDEE easy on NFD's at the mo because I'm having a dry January too. The real test will come in Feb when I usually fall off the wagon in a spectacular fashion, am hoping that I will have good habits ingrained by then (she says crossing fingers).

Sorry can't remember who suggested the squat challenge but have started that and loving it!

Bssh all I can say is wow! What a transformation, you've really inspired me by showing that this 5:2 lark works

Have a great day peeps Smile

ImABadGirl · 12/01/2014 11:31

I can confirm that my breakfast was fabulous, although it was a whopping 980 calories worth but I watched my portion sizes and normally would have scoffed 3 croissants no problems and eaten 3 times that calorie intake, now I know why I'm 2 stone overweight!

noddyholder · 12/01/2014 12:20

What can you have on a fast day? Do you feel really starving by pm?

CheshireSplat · 12/01/2014 12:20

Hi Lily, Joby and Morris. Pleased there are lots of other newbies too. Morris we do sound like body twins. May I say you are looking mighty fine! Wink We sound similar in that the only way we've been at correct BMI is by practically starving ourselves. So, it'll be interesting to see what 5:2 can so. I don't find getting under 500 too difficult to be honest - we cook from scratch usually so it can be a bit time consuming to work out all the calories. Good luck!

zedzedzed · 12/01/2014 13:10

vimeo.com/50912488

Anybody lurking who has NOT watched this and thinks this is a fad diet (me, a week ago) please watch, it's not long and is very reassuring and explains a lot about what's been written on these threads.

After watching it again, I really think I HAVE to rope my OH into trying at least 6:1 as he has high cholesterol, is 10yrs older than me and is a little overweight too.

My first NFD where I've tried this 16:8 today has gone a bit FD by mistake ...I think once I skip brekkie I'm just not that interested. How funny.

frenchfancy · 12/01/2014 13:20

Noddyholder read This and This then feel free to come and ask any questions you have.

postmanpatscat · 12/01/2014 13:21

I am STUFFED! We had brunch at Frankie and Benny's Smile Think that will keep me going for many hours to come.

Good to see that all our new fasters are getting on so well. My typical week when I started was 2x 500cal FDs, 4 days at TDEE which was about 1700 at most, 1 splurge day plus 3x gym visits per week. If we ate out I had whatever I fancied because the exercise would offset it. I lost 21lbs in 12 weeks.

bssh you're looking great!

toffee hope cat reappears soon.
