Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Just coming to the end of my fourth fast.

Daydreaming about making a choccy cake tomorrow and having a fat pot roast!

CheshireSplat · 11/01/2014 21:22

Hi everyone.

I'm another newbie. Have done 2 FDs so far and strangely this morning was a bit disappointed that the next one isn't until Tuesday!

I've always been a bit overweight but always done lots of running so haven't worried about it. 5' 3" and was always somewhere around 10 stone 10. After DD I've plateaued around 11 stone 3 ish which means my clothes don't fit properly. To have a normal BMI I'd need to be 10 stone exactly which I have never been as an adult. Even for my wedding when I was really good I only got to 10 stone 3 for one day only!!!!!

I love food and drink (more important to me than being slim) but I'm really confident this is the solution to get to 10 stone.

This thread seems really friendly (if scarily long!) and is an inspiring read! I look forward to joining the gang.

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 21:38

Mazzle - just finishing a lovely meal.
I planned to eat much more but just can't face it! I'm too full . Haha 5:2 - just something else this !

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 21:39

To see profile's you need to go on a computer Mazzle.

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 21:41

Know what you mean Cheshire and

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 21:44

Know what you mean Cheshire and Gheckos. One of the things I enjoy about this WOE is that I feel excited about the next day. In the past, any diets I've been on meant I felt just the opposite when I thought about the next day - just miserable.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2014 21:53

Yes - I look forward to being able to 'eat tomorrow' - but I also quite look forward to my FD on Monday after the weekend. The other on Thursday not so much.

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 22:08

Tomorrow I'm going to get my FD meals organised for the week and I love the feeling of being sure of myself about these meals . Already looking forward to tomorrow now.
Going to bed now .Speak soon. xxxx

Jobyloo · 11/01/2014 22:12

Cheshire I'm a newbie too and love running. Just getting over surgery and can't wait to get back out there. Really enjoying the feeling of being back in control though with 5:2 so just hoping the exercise will boost the losses. Next FD Tues as well.

Bsh really like the idea of setting MFP to sedentary and then having exercise cals as a cushion on NFD's, hadn't thought of that!

BsshBossh · 11/01/2014 22:13

Mazzle I'm on an iPad too. You just need to keep clicking on a username - eventually it'll click.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/01/2014 22:16

Mazzle, Lily I nearly always use my iPad and I can see everyone's (public) photos. Like now:

Great pix, Bssh. A marvellous inspiration to newbies, especially those with a lot to lose.

NotAsTired · 11/01/2014 23:13

Ooh, bssh you have a new photo. You are looking great. Why did you get rid of the other photo? What was your BMI on the photo you got rid of, because I can see that there's a big difference since then.

MorrisZapp · 11/01/2014 23:23

CheshireSplat, we are body twins! I'm same height and weight as you, want to lose a stone.

I was thin once as a teenager (obsessive dieting) and once as an adult when I had PND and couldn't swallow. Other than that, I'm strong and curvy but I have insane muffin top and the beginnings of back fat too.

I'm in it for the long haul, I can't lose it quickly so no point setting myself up to fail. If I lost a pound every fortnight I'd be thrilled.

I've decided I don't want to eat diet food, it's too depressing. So my next fd will consist of mini portions of normal food. I can't see me getting below 600 cals but it's something to aim for.

mummyof2girlsx · 11/01/2014 23:32

posting in case anyone wants to respond??

Unrelated to 5:2 but husband is being an arse, he has just gone to bed after being a total !!!!

On the plus side, I have lost most of my Christmas gain after 2 fasts Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 00:06

Sorry to hear about your knobhead DH, Mummyof2, but good that you are losing some other pounds of useless flab.
Flowers
You and MrsF should get together. Her DH is a permanent knobhead to her and the DCs. Hence my request for a braised testicle recipe we could give her.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2014 00:11

I downloaded Dr Mosely's new book "Fast Exercise", i.e. HIIT for 5:2
Very informative about the science and useful practical info.

I posted my 1st notes on the ExerciseThread and will add more tomorrow.

BetsyBell · 12/01/2014 00:27

hopeful looks yum, recipe saved, thank you x

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 12/01/2014 06:03

mummyof2 sorry your dh is being an arse. Hope this is a one off and he's normally a decent bloke.

I've been wide awake since 5am. No idea why, could be due to yesterday's fast but I think my sleep pattern is just a bit messed up.

Geckos48 · 12/01/2014 06:19

Yes! It's Sunday morning! I completed my 4th fast yesterday and am very much looking forward to a latte!

Geckos48 · 12/01/2014 06:20

P.s I sleep really lightly on fast days!

MelanieCheeks · 12/01/2014 06:51

MorrisZap, you dont have to eat diet food, most of us dont!

Now, I know ready meals are a hot topic of debate on the Facebook 5:2 page right now. My opinion is, they have their place. Some people dont like cooking on FDs, or like to have something handy and calorie counted to reach for. But there's absolutely no reason to go for low-fat, WW products or their ilk.

BsshBossh · 12/01/2014 07:19

NotAsTired I couldn't work out how to put multiple photos up. The previous "after" shot was BMI 24.

mummyof2girlsx · 12/01/2014 07:34

Grin BigChoc braised testicles....now thats a thought!

Sorry for the moan but I was so angry I just needed to tell someone. He is mostly a nice bloke but he can be very selfish at times Angry. Never mind there are people much worse off than me!

Well done Geckos48 on your 4th fast, how are you finding it? Yum Latte, enjoy!

NFD for me today and already looking forward to Sunday lunch Grin.

farrowandballs · 12/01/2014 08:01

Hi
Not been online much so just catching up with the thread. I went crazy on Thursday after 2nd FD - went way over 3000 calories but felt good to know that I could mellow things out over next few days and I think my average for the week will work out at around 1400 per day. Whats even more interesting is that my big blow out was actually just pretty representative of how I normally ate. Think ive been compulsively over eating by at least a 1000 calories a day for about 6 months..
Just catching up with thread -suxh inspiring profile pics!
3rd FD tomorrow. Like others, IM actually looking forward to it!!!

Geckos48 · 12/01/2014 08:02

My latte was amazing, truly a thing of joy!

Today is all about the food, looking forward to lunch very much!
