Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Ds is such a happy chap even when ill he's quite easy to look after, he's busy laughing at a light fitting at the moment. He has a real obsession with light fittings Hmm

TalkinPeace · 11/01/2014 18:28

lillipu
Basically its skipping breakfast!
eat only during an 8 hour window of each day
so no snacking and effectively doing a 16 hour fast every day
but the lunch and supper can be up to your TDEE

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 11/01/2014 18:34
Confused

I am sure I posted Confused.

TalkinPeace · 11/01/2014 18:34

you did, I saw it

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 11/01/2014 18:37

I mean between that one ^ and the one this morning.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/01/2014 18:38

toffee ^^
Try not to worry. Sounds the feline equivalent of a twisted knee or pulled leg muscle. He may have misjudged a jump or got in a scrap with a bigger moggie over whose mouse it was.
Don't be disappointed about your 2lb either: Remember your water weight or what is waiting to 'come out' or totm can cause up to 6lb fluctuation. See what happens over the next week.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/01/2014 18:40

Well done on your thin pants NSV, Mazzle

BigChocFrenzy · 11/01/2014 18:44

Congrats on your NSV, too Time.

Special Flowers to BadGirl (who obviously isn't) for giving blood.

Lilliput · 11/01/2014 18:45

When would one do 16:8?

ImABadGirl · 11/01/2014 18:49

TalkinPeace · 11/01/2014 18:54

Lilliput

Breadandwine · 11/01/2014 18:59

We are hoping to retire soon and want to be able to enjoy it for a long time and do lots of travelling.

Darnley, get your dh to check out my 5:2 experience on my blog. I'm well into my retirement - and, after nearly 2 years of IFing, I've never been so fit!

Lilliput · 11/01/2014 19:02

Wow that sounds like hardcore fasting.

BsshBossh · 11/01/2014 19:12

Lilliput essentially all TiP's doing is skipping breakfast most days, slightly undereating her TDEE on weekday NFDs and then going over TDEE on weekends. I do the same as I'm not a breakfast person and I love eating out loads on weekends.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2014 19:17

Basically its skipping breakfast!
and no evening snack if that's something you do - a habit I need to break. So having said that, I'm going to go and have some yogurt now instead of at bedtime.

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 19:46

Good to read you all again.
Tonight either I'm out for a meal with DH or I'm making a curry. Either way, I'm looking forward to a nice meal-not too much so's to undoe my recent hard work. I'm not into all the under-cutting well enough to know how to splurge out at the week-end .
I was thinking of having some peanuts. Damn good job I looked at how many calories they are first !
100g = 600 cals WHAAT !
Will give them a miss I think- though must admit I will miss them Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2014 19:53

Nuts and seeds are so easy to overdo - nutritious but I had a shock this morning when I decided to calorie-count my default breakfast - yogurt with seeds and nuts. I'll be using a smaller spoon to scoop them out from now on! (I hate calorie counting on NFDs) If you like nuts as a snack, either count them out (eg 6 almonds) or weigh them - if you find a little pot which holds say 15g of peanuts you won't overdo them.

DottiestDoris · 11/01/2014 20:15

A question for those of you who use mfp.
Do you fill in the exercise bit? I mean, if you had a tdee of 2000 and burnt off 300 calories walking, would you eat 2000 calories or 2300?Confused

BsshBossh · 11/01/2014 20:17

If you calculated your TDEE as sedentary then you could eat back exercise calories I guess; if your TDEE includes some level of exercise then no you don't eat back.

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 20:18

Hey that's a really good idea Errol . Thanks :)

DottiestDoris · 11/01/2014 20:24

Ah, makes sense Bssh. Thank you. Saw your profile update earlier... wow. Just wow.

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 20:25

Just found that 1 midget peanut is 11 calories ! So , that's like 1 glass of white wine is the same as 6 peanuts. OK so I know what I'm having for apéritif tonight !

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 20:26

That scribble read 'aperitif'' Smile

MazzleDazzle · 11/01/2014 20:57

Sitting here in my 'thin' clothes having just scoffed 2589 cals today!

No guilt or shame though as I'll fit in 2 FD before Thurs.

Enjoy your meal Lily!

I can't seem to see anyone's profile pics. Is it because I'm on an iPad?

TimeToPassGo · 11/01/2014 21:02

Thanks Exhausted and BigChoc Smile Just had 4 Lindt sweets. I normally love them but feel quite sick after them tonight.
