Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Bssh you look amazing! Just right for your petite frame, well done!
Had two NFD here and am depressed how low my TDEE is ( short, small frame, near target) 1500 ish.... I definitely need to add more exercise into the mix
Have indulgent couple of days away next week, so planning two low-ish 16:8 days in preparation.

EarSlaps · 11/01/2014 09:49

MrsF- wrote a post earlier and it got lost. 3 lots of Jillian in a week is great, and it's three lots more exercise than most people do I a week. I've done my three lots of ripped for the week now and might try and squeeze in a killer tomorrow.

frenchfancy · 11/01/2014 10:47

waswondering- you can still use MFP if you cook from scratch, though I sometimes use caloriecount.about.com instead as I prefer the recipe analyser on there.

I second using the tape measure instead of the scales, especially in the early days.

Not2bObvious · 11/01/2014 11:17

I cook most food from scratch too WasW so I started to add my recipes in, takes a bit if time but if you're struggling to see why your efforts aren't paying off, it may help

Coveredinweetabix · 11/01/2014 11:38

Yay! Back below 11st. Also means I have lost 6lbs of the 12lbs I put on over December so am on track to be about the same weight on 1st Feb as I was on 1st Dec. Then I can get on with losing the next couple of lbs and being a healthy BMI.
Good luck to anyone fasting today

MazzleDazzle · 11/01/2014 11:47

Well done Covered!

Waswondering I cook from scratch and it's easy to work out cals. of things. Remember to weigh food and read packets where poss. as sometimes online calculators aren't accurate.

I have a pair of skinny, low waist cords that I use as a gauge. They have only been on a handful of times, and not at all in the last 18 months, as they NEVER close.

Tentatively tried them on today and they fit! I am delighted Grin

frenchfancy · 11/01/2014 12:31

Well done mazzle Feels good doesn't it!

Not2bObvious · 11/01/2014 13:00

Delighted for you covered and also Envy Wink
In good'ish mood after 3.3 mile run (and walk) On a 16:8 today after a massive 2100 calories yesterday. I'm kinda in the humour to do some more working out, toying with the idea of a walk to the shopping centre if I can persuade my eldest to come with. She's a bit of a shopaholic, I could appeal to that side if herGrin
Mazzle that's a great boost, tangible proof you're on your way to a slimmer you! The scales can say whatever number but if you can't get into the clothes you want, what's the use? Sez she, scale' bitch extradinaireWink

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 11/01/2014 14:00

Hi somewhere and dottiest it's a really busy thread so people don't respond to all the posts. I might set up a 5:2 bf thread if this one stats so busy.

Having a fast day today so far only had 88 calories Shock Grin. I'm not using many though, I'm not feeling well so have taken ds to bed with me while dh plays with dd.

mazzle well done getting into your thin pants.

Where's everyone gone?? Are you all off having fun elsewhere?? I'm beginning to worry I'm seriously addicted to this thread if I'm concerned with lack of thread'age

Quiet in here today!

Breastfeeders! Somewherebecomingrain springs to mind, argh, forgotten who else (I know you're already on there whenshewasbad- there's a 5:2 breastfeeding thread with questions on - maybe it would be a good place to pool your collective knowledge? There's a post on hints and tips somewhere I'll copy and paste in if I can find it.

Geckos48 · 11/01/2014 17:31

I am sat here waiting the final 6 minutes for my dinner to be ready.

Today I've had

2 small cups of tea with milk (around 30kcal)
A can of diet fanta 10kcal
A can of diet dr pepper 3kcal

And am just about to have smoked river cobbler with steamed veggies and a medium roasted sweet potato for tea.

TimeToPassGo · 11/01/2014 17:33

Quiet?! You guys are a hoot! It has still been at the top of my TIO list all day :o

NSV: I am back in my normal jeans, not my 'fat' jeans. So far my hybrid WW / 5:2 approach is working. Another high points day today, hurrah!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2014 17:34

Enjoying the sunshite, yes indeed - a short (4mile) but quite hilly walk this afternoon, with DD carrying an 8kg pack - just bought it for DofE later this year so try it out. Including a thermos of tea for us an biscuits for the dog - nice to have a Sherpa. Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2014 17:35

Er, sorry about the typo! the sun was not shite!

ImABadGirl · 11/01/2014 17:48

Hi all, FD for me today as I had to swap my days around (love the flexibility of this woe) I gave blood yesterday and my iron was high, I have been taking berocca so hopefully I'm not missing out on vitamins and minerals (last time I tried to give blood I couldn't as my iron was too low)

Anyway, have managed to fast since 1530 yesterday so will keep going until tomorrow morning, that will be roughly 36 hours, my appetite has reduced massively and I'm just not hungry.

BsshBossh · 11/01/2014 17:49

We were out all day too. Just back from a busy day at the Science & Natural History museums, including pizza, scampi, chips and ice cream for lunch. DH is making roast chicken for dinner tonight which we'll follow with a slice of tarte citron.

Geckos48 · 11/01/2014 17:55

Comes up at 475 calories all in :)

Bit of butter but we used butter to cook the fish and then had that with the spuds!

Eatriskier · 11/01/2014 17:58

Thanks to errol all I have going round my head is in the sunshite ala oasis...

I've been out at the football all day, being the feminine woman I am Wink and now I have the bloody hiccups

DottiestDoris · 11/01/2014 18:14

whenshewasbad that is really NOT a lot of calories! Even if I were laid up in bed I think I'd really struggle on that. You need energy to get better!
Anyway, I really hope you feel better soon. Thanks

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 11/01/2014 18:22

time well done getting into your normal jeans. I'm a bit new to the lingo but I'm guessing that's a non-scale victory.

Lilliput · 11/01/2014 18:25

Talk to me about 16:8 please.
