Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

MORNING SOMEWHERE.
How old is your dd? I remember my ebf ds1 had a sleep setback at about 5 months. It's so much worse after they have been sleeping ok. Anyway, I started to introduce solids and we eventually got our sleep back.
ds2 is ebf and 12 weeks and sleeping ok, touch wood. How old is yours?
How many calories have you been eating in fd for the bf?
Whenshewasbad is bf too

mummyof2girlsx · 11/01/2014 07:17

somewherebecomingrain you are not alone, everyone ignores me too! Grin. Therefore I mostly lurk in the back ground and try to keep up with the speedy thread! How old is your DD? x

hopefulgum · 11/01/2014 07:27

Hi Betsy, I am actually popping back onto the thread for a second time today!

I put all my food into MFP for yesterday and it wasn't too bad, only 200 over my TDEE (which I actually have a bit under anyway),so I don't think there's too much damage. A NSV for me was that I ate half a T-bone steak, where before I'd have eaten a whole one.

All my guests have been 5:2-ing for about a year, and they all seem to eat a reasonable amount, but not pigging out. To me it was a reasonably normal meal, though I don't normally start with crackers and dip, and don't drink alcohol much, and don't do dessert, but the main meal: meat, salad and roast potatoes, wasn't too over the top. It's all the extras that add up the calories.

One good thing about MFP is it spurs me on to exercise. When I see that I've burnt calories, which then equates into more food, I am very motivated!Hmm

Somewhere - those sleepless nights are a killer. I hope you can get some rest in the day? I remember my babies doing similar things - often it was a growth spurt or teething. How old is your L.O now? I am still trying, in the 2ww now, but really starting to think it is time to move on.Isn't easy though...Sad

Anyway, for you Betsy and anyone else who'd like a calorie bomb to enjoy. Totally worth it in my opinion!

Gelati recipes:

this recipe makes a lovely creamy gelato and is very easy. It is also delicious as a custard (Mmmm)

The pistachio gelato required a bit more work - I made the paste to start, and didn't seem as creamy as the other one, but very yummy.

frenchfancy · 11/01/2014 08:02

Thanks hopeful they look great.

LilyJoAndMe · 11/01/2014 08:15

Morning all,
Oldies and Newbies alike. I'll be thinking about you during my NFD. Looking forward to catching up on the news a bit later today ... On thread 36 by the way things went yesterday ?

zedzedzed · 11/01/2014 08:16

Mmmmmm gelati...thanks hope

First ever weekend NFD today. Yay! Let's see what happens, will be having a rare baby-free night tonight to go to the cinema

Something odd's happening, I know it's early days but on my NFDs, with all that freedom, I'm actually only eating between 1500 and 1800 of my TDEE and seem to fancy more protein than carbs. InconCEIvable!

Firstly, is that number ok? Will it mess me up?
And secondly, is that because of decreased appetite/shrunken stomach?

All very interesting (to me, not the rest of the world!).

Right. Butterkist.

zedzedzed · 11/01/2014 08:25

WOAH! 200g of toffee Butterkist is over 850cals. Think I'd rather have a drink or three!

Darnley · 11/01/2014 08:27

Wow. So much to read since my post...

Thanks for the replies and the info. Think I will continue to weigh in daily as a check on progress.

Getting dh to do this aswell was easy as we are both at risk of some serious health issues and the time felt right. We are hoping to retire soon and want to be able to enjoy it for a long time and do lots of travelling.

Going to friends tonight for pizza and a film. No doubt some wine will be consumed, so already planning on 4:3 next week as balance.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 11/01/2014 08:34

Morning all Smile.

Will catch up later. Head spinning at the moment as I am waiting to ring the vet as BoyCat is limping still, he started last night and hasn't slept it off. DS2 just came in and said he looks wonky. I would cry. We lost our cat and two guinea pigs in 6 months last year and I don't want any more worry.

I am fat this morning and scales confirmed what I could see. 2lbs on. I know it isn't much but what always happens is happening again. I lose a stone. stick for a while then start going up.

Wish BoyCat healthy vibes for me please. He is only 2 Sad.

DottiestDoris · 11/01/2014 08:47

Toffee - Get well Boycat. They're made of stern stuff these critters. He'll be absolutely fine im sure

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 11/01/2014 08:58

Thanks DottiestDotty. Nearly time I can ring.

Mummyof2girls and Somewhere - honestly no one ignores anyone on here Smile. The threads just move so fast and it is hard to keep up.

mscnile · 11/01/2014 09:00

Morning all, regretting the excesses of the last 2 days here! Never mind, I will 16:8 today and tomorrow and fast on Monday so should be back on track. I love that about this woe, I don't get the sense of despair or deprivation that other weight loss plans give.

Toffee, hope boycat is ok, we have 2 who are always getting into scrapes, I'm sure he'll be fine. We have to take puppy to vet this pm though, poorly tum.

Like lots of people I can't keep up with all the posts here but good luck, well done and keep it up to you all!

BsshBossh · 11/01/2014 09:04

zedzed if you're generally undereating your TDEE because of shrunken appetite that's perfectly fine IMHO as eating according to physical appetite is normal healthy eating behaviour. But it does mean you can eat a 200g pack of Butterkist popcorn if you fancy it Grin.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 11/01/2014 09:07

Got the last appointment for 2.40pm.

Hope your puppy is okay mscnile.

Southeastdweller · 11/01/2014 09:08

Welcome to the many newcomers this week and I also can't fully keep up with everyone but anyone starting out, please do keep reading as much as you can because these threads are great for motivation Smile.

Broke 35 hour LOF at half 8 this morning with 2 slices of toast.

NSV: I now start every day with a wee bit of exercise, a coffee and a water. Most days, that's all I need.

Reading everyone else's posts really keeps me going and I love to hear about all the other stuff going on in your lives. I am currently potty training my youngest. It is not going well, she is rather stubborn, but hey ho! We'll get there in the end.

Southeastdweller · 11/01/2014 09:30

Was Did you log your calorie intake on NFD's or was it noted in your head?

MazzleDazzle · 11/01/2014 09:30

WasWondering take you measurements! Apparently lots of 5:2ers see a marked diff. in inches rather than pounds.

Also, weigh yourself once a week only she tells herself first thing in the morning, after you've been to the loo. Oh, and naked!

zedzedzed · 11/01/2014 09:35

Poor toffee's cat. Hope you get good news, it's such a worry when they're poorly.

Thanks bsssh yeah, I'm always wary of setting up that whole starvation thing as it's been my undoing before, but I guess as all I'm doing is counting the cals not actively limiting them...just not feeling too piggy for some reason...hopefully like you say, it'll be ok. See how it goes re Butterkist!

Toffee cat woes aside, I know I'm new but 2lbs seems a very small amount to me compared to your huge achievements, and is probably just a wee blip and I guess a couple of mindful days and you'll be back on track? It's so hard no to feel shite when it's up not down though eh...I won't have scales in the house as I'm not good with bad weigh-ins.

Fingies crossed for good cat health. X

Not2bObvious · 11/01/2014 09:37

Wow Bssh it's like looking at a different woman.
WasWondering you worked out your tdee? Are you tracking your cals/sure you have the right portion sizes? Have you noticed any slight change in how your clothes fit. It's only been 1 week''ish, don't despair or get discouraged. This is the only program I've ever followed that worked and it worked cause I just kept at it, yes it's not fast but fast never worked for me after the first few pounds. Now, I'm going to drag my slightly more inflated post Xmas butt out of the bed and go for my first jog of the year!
Having a crap week but hey, there's no better alternative to this WOL, time to get back in the game. Have a good morning all. Day 2 of avoiding the scales since it gives me the rage, my skinny/stretchy jeans were marginally less stretched yesterday so I'm taking that as a good sign

zedzedzed · 11/01/2014 09:38

Bsssh woah! You are proper fit now! WELL DONE YOU! You make me smile as you look so chuffed in the 2nd one!
