Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Did you persuade them, or did they find it themselves, or even introduce you to it ?

Does persuading a DH/DP to change their lifestyle ever work?

Mine observed me - cheerfully having just tea sometimes when we stopped at the café in the park while he needed cake or lunch, and he may have noticed the 'fast diet' book atop the stack in the loo. Not sure if he's read it. And then again he reads the Times which has loads of stuff about it from time to time.

Lili Sounds good. You are having plenty of veg and I presume enough protein to keep hunger at bay.
You will soon tune 5:2 to fit your lifestyle and find your preferred FD meal plan to keep hunger controlled.

zedzedzed · 10/01/2014 22:31

Some stupid/hopeful maths before bedtime: so...apparently it takes about a 3,500 calorie deficit to lose 1lb.

My TDEE is 2264, x 7 days = 15,848 (my weekly allowance to maintain fatness as is)

So far I seem to be eating between 1,600 and 2,000 of my TDEE on NFDs and under 300 on FDs.

That would add up to a weekly total of between 8,600 and 10,600.

That's a deficit of between 5,248 and 7,248 cals.

Divided by the magic 1lb=3,500 should equal a weekly loss of between 1.49 and 2.07lbs

Yeah. In theory. Let's see shall we!

Night all.

FWIW
I do read the whole thread but I cannot respond to every post
if nothing else because as a long term maintainer I think its more useful if those still losing weight support newcomers
but please, do not ever think we are still not watching and supporting.

If you read through threads you'll see I have an emphasis
pop my (or any long standing posters) name in bold in your post and we will respond

you newcomers cannot possibly realise how good it feels to me to see Toffee, Florrick and Cuckoo among those advising you ThanksThanksThanksThanks

Lilliput · 10/01/2014 22:34

I think I need to work on more protein because fruit and veg does make my tummy bubble a bit. I am kind of avoiding carbs in my 500 allowance. I am also anxious about non fast days especially since my next fast day is probably not til Wednesday next week. I feel like I will have undone the good work of the fast days this week by then.

Msdunny · 10/01/2014 22:52

CuckooAtchooUhoh hi thanks for the welcome! I realised I was too excited about my loss that I forgot to put on stats and say much else! Blush
5'2 start weight was 11st 13 Ib and after 4 fasts 11st 9, and calorie counting on nfd's has helped me to educate myself on portion control and realised I was living on sugary teas and coffees and too much olive oil! Lol
I love the fact I don't feel so bloated now. I know it mostly water at the start but it certainly does give you a boost! Grin
Looking forward to joining in on this journey with you all

MrsFlorrick · 10/01/2014 23:01

TIP GrinThanksThanks

To the new people. I luffs TIP. Amongst many on here she has been an amazing support through my weight loss journey and personal as well.

And not forgetting my pals Bigchoc cuckoo and toffee. Always there if you need a chat.

If you need sensible advice Bssh Eatrisker Betsy and Earslaps are here.

Blush I've had some WineGrin

BsshBossh · 10/01/2014 23:08

mummytowillow you went over by 1000? In my book, that's no biggie - on weekends I've regularly gone over by double that and my TDEE is around 2k. I just adjust the rest of the week by skipping a meal here and there or simply eating less overall. It's life so you just balance it out.

BigChoc my DH started 6:1 soon after I started 5:2. He has no weight to lose but we chatted loads about it (I shared all the research with him) and he's convinced by the science of fasting. He's a science by training (PhD) like you and a lawyer by trade and is ultra rational so his continued enthusiasm for fasting after 11 months keeps me going too.

Not surprised you need the Wine MrsF, hope dd, and consequently you, sleep better tonight. Haven't seen you on the JM thread for a bit. Are those new guinea pigs disrupting your exercise.

NFD here but skipped breakfast. Made a cake with the toddler and homemade nasi goreng and a glass of wine tonight. Got croissants for breakfast tomorrow- I always like to have a fancy breakfast on the weekend, usual pancakes or croissants.

Having our kitchen done soon, we'll be three weeks without a kitchen. Be interesting to see whether that makes me lose weight (eating less) or gain (takeaways).

BetsyBell · 10/01/2014 23:15

I must admit I'm having trouble keeping up with the thread while it's travelling at high speed but I do look through frequently and will always respond to my name in bold!

Also, if anyone has introduced themselves and not received a response, please don't be put off - we are friendly but it's hard to keep up (see above Grin ), just keep posting!

Great to see the thread so busy and for so many people jumping to offer fab advice to new starters.

Oh and anyone who's worried about asking too many questions or whatever (zed I'm looking at you!) Don't, because in a few weeks you'll be dishing out the advice like a seasoned pro, because that's what you'll be.

Flowers all round.

Earslaps. I've only done my JM workouts 3 times this week. So I am too Blush to show my face on Bigchocs workout thread Wink

Fingers crossed next week will be more productive.

Sorry about your dad curve that's going to be tough for you and your son Sad

dottiest glad your 2nd fast day went better. I'm going to try and drink more on my fast days too.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 10/01/2014 23:23

Thanks TIP Thanks struggling to keep up with the thread too.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/01/2014 23:43

Lili Many of us avoid fruit on an FD. Yes, I know it's healthy and low-cal, but it can upset an empty tum or spike the blood sugar levels and make you ravenous.
Eat plenty of veg with sufficient protein. Chunky soups and stews make a good lunch. Just choose low cal ones so you have enough cals for a supper - ready meals are ok.
Have your fruit on NFDs and relax.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/01/2014 23:46

MrsF Come and confess your sins on the exercise thread. We'll encourage you, via a gentle supportive kick in the arse, to do more next week.
Smile

hopefulgum · 10/01/2014 23:50

I am really struggling to keep up with the thread as I read just once a day, and so don't really comment on what everyone else is talking about. But I do enjoy all the support and information, so I keep coming back and skim reading.I don't intentionally ignore what everyone is talking about.

Up thread, others were talking about doing the 5:2 to have good health, particularly later in life and with family histories of illness. I am also doing it for those reasons, (plus am tired of being overweight, and would love for once, to feel really good in my own skin, to put on clothes and feel they hang right and that I look nice. I actually over spend on clothing because I am always looking for something that looks and feels good, but am never satisfied because of my body size and shape).

My parents have a laundry list of illnesses and medications. Everyt ime I speak to my mother I hear all about everything that is wrong with her and my dad. It is so depressing, so I rarely call her (we have other issues too). The crazy thing is she was always shaming me about my weight as a child, and I got great praise when I dieted and lost weight. It's sad, I think my first diet was when I was 10 years old Sad

Anyway, my DH and I have 5 children and had our last one in our forties, so we really feel it is very, very important to stay healthy so that we can be around to see him grow up, be there to support him when/if he has a family of his own. My DH's parents are also unwell. FIL has skin cancer and has limited time, and MIL has had a stroke and cognitively isn't doing very well.)

As I said yesterday, I had a NSV of inches lost Grin and funnily enough, after a second weigh in (first weigh-in was depressing - no change), had lost 900gms - nearly a kilo (1.9lbs)! Hurray!
But then I had a huge blow-out as I was busy cooking all day (and tasting) for a dinner we had with friends last night. I also drank about 4 glasses of moscato/sparkling shiraz/reisling!

The dessert I made was a triump. I made chocolate hazelnut gelato and pistachio gelato, served with almond meringues and sugared hazelnuts. OMG! It was divine!

So I reckon I went well over TDEE, and plan to go low today to make up for it. Next fast day is Monday, though, if there's nothing going on I might do it tomorrow as on Monday I am taking the kids to swimming lessons and could have a big swim (which I cannot manage on a fast day).

This WOE is really taking off isn't it? We invited two couples over last night, and all of them are doing 5:2 too.

Breadandwine · 11/01/2014 01:15

In the 15 months I've been on these threads, this is the fastest they have moved, which I find very heartening!

The best thing about this WOL - apart from the mantra 'You can always have it tomorrow' - is its flexibility. So, for anyone who is worried that several NFDs on the trot might undermine the gains from FDs, you can always throw in a 16:8 - miss breakfast, or miss breakfast and lunch either side of a planned or an unplanned binge.

somewherebecomingrain · 11/01/2014 06:43

This thread has gone too fast for me for ages!

somewherebecomingrain · 11/01/2014 06:48

And everyone ignores me! But I'm presuming that's the rapid speed plus the fact that I don't name check much because of the speed plus I'm in a breastfeeding situation which most aren't.

Talking of which my dd has done a ninja move and is bf all night so things have taken a step back.

I am wondering if the breakfast manufacturers are quaking in their boots about 5:2

Xx

BetsyBell · 11/01/2014 07:00

We seem to have loads of BFeeders at the moment somewhere! Any tips to pass on the those newer starters? There should be a dedicated thread for it really but I suspect you're all a bit busy for that!

I like to read your nightly (for me!) musings gum. I remember drooling when I heard about your gelato making - I'd love the recipe if possible, sounds divine. Can't believe all your guests were 5:2ing! Do you think everyone ate more because it was guilt free? Or was everyone suddenly too full because of shrunken stomachs?!
