The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

Oh it doesnt dishearten me to know I have more to lose than most, I just think that having a separate support group for people with a lot to lose would be helpful :)

gecko i know what you mean, but I personally like the mixture and especially the former biggies who are now maintaining/approaching their long-term goals. It gives me hope for the possibilities of achieving AND sustaining this.

I've over 100lbs so I'm here for the long haul like you. X

Cuckoo-hope you feel better soon-there's so many nasty bugs around. Tough when you have to stay strong for the troops.

And Mrs F-Big cuddles for your dd, how nasty for a tot to have to deal with that.

Well I owe several of you a very largeWine because I felt RUBBISH after my first fd. I woke in the night thinking I might actually have flu. 2nd fd today and I drank roughly my body weight in water, as per your collective advise, and I feel energetic, happy and unhungry. I haven't eaten anywhere near what I thought I'd have to.
So those who've missed the wise words of those experienced 5:2ers...DRINK WATER!

Bsssh Missed your post earlier, thanks and yeah, what you said! I lost my Dad when I was first pregnant 3 yrs ago, heart attack at 67 (he was an alcoholic and heavy smoker) so having quit the fags myself when I got preggo (never looking back), yeah, I don't want my kids to lose me so soon, even if I'm feeling fat but fine now.

But I also REALLY don't want my daughter to be fat-shamed by her Mum the way I was or to have the same food and body issues as me, so I have to sort this pattern quick before she starts noticing Mummy's yo-yo-ing or self-loathing!

Hi all. Just reading all the messages regarding wanting to do this for health benefits. I have a lot of weight to lose but ultimately the health side is my main motivator.

My step father is overweight and has smoked for years. After nearly dying of pneumonia last April, he was then diagnosed with kidney cancer in July, last week he was told that it is inoperable and he has 6-12 months left yet.

My ds is just 2.5. He loves grandad. I absolutely do not want to have the same health problems and my ds to go through this with me. I am doing this for my ds.

On a positive note, it may only be 2lb, but I have lost 2lb after my first two FDs and I'm chuffed - as every lb counts!!

Know how that feels zed. Lost my dad fairly recently. He was 52. I was 7 months pregnant. It is with me every day.

Also the fat shaming from my mother too.

Gosh curveballs just read your last post properly. So sorry for you and well done for tackling this WOE at such a horrendous time.

My eldest was 2 when she lost her grandfather, so I understand a bit of what you're going through. It's their loss that is harder to bear.

There's nothing I can say that will make it any better, I know. Take care of yourself xx

Curve - I am sorry to hear your news. Your son can continue to have some wonderful times with his grandad over the next few months and build up some wonderful memories.

Mrs F - my DD had a lot of UTIs a few months ago. I now pay a lot more attention to how much she drinks, have taught her to look at her wee and ask off a drink if it's yellow and, most importantly I think, revised how to wiped her bottom. She was using the same bit of loo paper for both front & back & would often wipe from back to front which must have contributed to it. Touch wood, she's been OK for a while now.

when to weigh questions - I weigh every morning, just after I've done a wee & taken my PJs off. I take my official weight as Saturday morning as that is after my third fast of the week. During the week my weight will fluctuate as I tend to lose a lb on a fast day and then put most of it on on a NFD but, gradually, over the course of a week, those little losses mount up and by a Saturday I will have a loss. It may not be a whole lb and rarely the 2lbs I dream of, but it will still be a loss. Unless its TOTM.

I've had a roller coaster of a week it feels with this WOE. I can't believe how much it feels as though I am completely starting again when I had thought that the behaviour was completely ingrained. Neither DC has slept well this week so there have been a minimum of four interruptions a night and some of them have lasted the best part of an hour so sleep deprivation isn't helping. The lowest point was at 5am on Wednesday morning when I woke up starving despite Tuesday being a NFD! Wednesday was a FD and I was really nervous but, by keeping busy in the morning, I got through the day on about 700 cals.

Two big NSVs for me (provided I can stick to them)

  • I do not need to buy chocolate when it is on offer. Yes a pack of 4 crunchies for £1 is a bargain when an individual crunchie is about 65p but we are not breadline and I do not actually need to worry about the price difference. Also, it may appear a bargain as I have four of them but I do not need four of them. I just need one at TOTM and therefore have actually spent 35p more than I would have done if I'd just bought 4. These offers are continuous. If I ever have to ebf a newborn, I will indulge. Until then, lay off. Same goes for best before today cakes etc marked down in the supermarket. Why would I need 5 apple doughnuts?
  • I need to learn to stick to my TDEE on NFD. If I overeat consistently on these, then the weight will pile on when I move to maintenance.

She hasn't been well today. After the second dose of AB she perked up a teeny bit. Fingers crossed she won't be in pain tomorrow. I'm wincing just thinking about it.

She has acquired this UTI because she withholds poo and some times wee. I'm way beyond sticker charts etc. we're into big time bribery. Like a moshi monster and a 5p for her jar every time she poos. She already has every Little miss and mr Men book as they were used as toilet bribery. Sad

I've learnt lots of 4yo go through it. Still it makes me feel awful especially now its actually made her unwell.

Zed The high BMI-health issues exercises probably are not for you. I intended them for people exercising for the first time since school.
Choose something you think you can do, but that will stretch you.

I know an obese woman about your size, who runs marathons at age 60+. Ok, it takes her 7 hrs, but no way she isn't pretty fit and a damn site healthier than a 25 BMI couch potato.

The best indicator of life expectancy is the ability to do exercise, rather than a particular BMI or even %body fat.
You can be healthy well in advance of reaching your goal weight.

My DH has started 5:2 this week too - not sure how he'll do with it, he's a bit of a carbo addict - his DM was a type II diabetic so I think he knows he really needs to do something about it. But he's got some other health issues too ... he probably should have talked it over with a doctor but you know what men are like.

Still, he did ok Tuesday and today - helped by me giving him the TDEE calculator and telling him to try for a quarter of that, so 700 rather than 600 which I think really wasn't enough for him.

His idea of FD food is rather fabulous! As we're going to save money on all the odd teashop cakes and lunches out we'd been indulging in, he went to the farm shop and got 4 fillet steaks - he had one at lunchtime (don't know what with) and then for dinner I did stirfry veg (with some noodles and Chinese sauce for DD) he cooked the steaks - result we got excellent low-calorie dinner, fussy DD got more veg and protein than she'll usually eat. Its an NFD for me but I didn't want the noodles Shock.

I wouldn't want to split 5:2 main support into different groups.
We are a great mix of people; we benefit so much from our interaction:

-women / men
-age range early 20s to 76
-mums / not
-straight / gay
-newbies / old hands
-those with a lot / little to lose
-gym bunnies / just dipping a toe into their first Nikes.

Also, those with just the last few lb can plateau forever, while those wanting to lose several stone just whizz along.

Main thing is we're doing 5:2 together !

I started this week after reading the book but just want to check I am doing it right. My fast days this week were Wednesday and today. On both I had my usual evening meal the night before and then on FD had a cup of tea at breakfast, nothing to eat until between 12 and 1 I had a bowl of berries and a yoghurt. Dinner at about 7 consisting of mostly veg. This means that in theory overnight and til lunchtime I have a food free period of 16/17 hours.
So far I have coped with the hunger if busy though the water bubbling tummy rumbles were a bit embarrassing today at work.
