Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Phew on the blood orange wee!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 10/01/2014 15:49

Papayasoup - just scrolled quickly as on my phone but yes , I of have a slow cooker and did dinner in it last night. I have 3 recipe books and would probably rec 2 of them as I use them the most. The other is lovely but more fancy pants. I'll post a link once I'm home.

Papayasoup · 10/01/2014 15:51

zed just looked at your profile and those babies are gorgeous. I know they have ravaged your body but you will get you back. But a better you or in any case a stronger you. And a great role model. Totally understand your motivation

Papayasoup · 10/01/2014 15:58

darnley re weighing. You need to find what works for you. However if you choose to weigh every day you need to accept that here are a lot of fluctuations over the course of a week and just look at the trend

Personally I weigh every day (morning and night) but it is more out of interest. My mood is not affected by these normal fluctuations. If these impact your mood and how you face the day be it a fast or non fast day I suggest you put the scales away!
At the same time I also chose some jeans as a gage of my weight loss and that was the most motivating of all

Papayasoup · 10/01/2014 16:00

Thanks toffee

Eatriskier · 10/01/2014 16:08

Lots of running around happening here today. Not just in dd's chase me game. Ds has discovered how to get on the sofa. This means every time I leave the living room I have to run, do whatever I need to quickly and leg it back. I have found him on top of the cupboard next to the sofa too. He's bloody quick. I'm going to have to bring him into the toilet with me aren't I? Now I'm going to have 2 of them staring at me throughout peeing. Sad

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 10/01/2014 16:18

Gecko a few points...

This could really turn your life around so don't let anything dishearten you to the point of giving up.
This is a 5:2 thread, not specific to people with more than a certain amount to lose, so yes, you will find all sorts of cases on here.
I do understand what you mean, but bear in mind two things... some of those with only a little left to go are at the end of a long weight loss journey; and also, a lot I imagine, are here for the typical post Christmas weight loss frenzy and will start to drop off over the coming weeks as they either reach goal, or lose interest.

You have too much to lose, and everything to gain (by losing!), so I suggest going through (if haven't already) the inspirational thread and seeking out those names you can identify with. You will soon build relationships with those you feel you have common ground with and it will help you massively!

Good luck!!

luciangal1 · 10/01/2014 16:22

Good afternoon all, Have been eyeing you all for a while now but haven't taken the time to full integrate myself on what seems to be a very friendly bunch! so can I join in? I've been doing 5:2 since October of last year, when on holiday also with Christmas I'm looking forward to getting the final stone(s) off! I gym everyday apart from weekends and do a combination of cardio and weights. My stats: 5' 2, weight 157lbs, looking to get to around the 135lbs mark .

TheBitchesOfWeestick · 10/01/2014 16:22

MrsF your poor DD :( UTIs are the pits. Hope she feels better soon.

Took DD to her dance class this morning, so sweet to see all the toddlers bouncing about. I joined in with everything Grin

Venison stew for tea tonight, and it appears to be only 277 calories per portion! Which is good because I want to drink wine.

MrsFlorrick · 10/01/2014 16:23

To the new people with a fair bit to lose (8 stone some of you say).

I've lost 6 stone now. I lost that more than twice. First after DD was born and then now again after DS (2.5 years old now). And during the journey this time I slipped up last autumn (fell Dukan wagon) and regained 2 stone Hmm.

I've still got another half stone to go.

Not all of it on 5:2 but I've tried lots of different diets and always happy to tell you my tale. Grin

Hopasholic · 10/01/2014 16:34

Hello everyone, I'm more of a lurker but have been 5:2ing for a year now. Went to maintenance after loosing two stone but I'm trying once agin to loose half a stone after I gained over Christmas. Sad took my eye off the ball and drank far too much Wine

Anyway just wanted to give you heads up that I've just seen that Dr Michael Mosely himself is in for a live web chat on MN on Monday. It's related to his 'Fast' exercise programme rather than fasting, but thought it might be of interest Smile

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 10/01/2014 16:34

Oh and sorry if I totally misunderstood your post! Just gone back and re read so now I'm not sure if I did or not?!
I'm blaming being ill, head like cotton wool, sorry if I did!

Still valid points though for anyone it does apply to Smile

Slow cookers - I love mine, can't beat bunging a load of root veg, pack of mince and sprinkle of herbs, s&p, bit of liquid, first thing in day. Make up some dumplings and pop on top 20 mins before serving. Serve with chunks of butter slathered crusty bread. Perfect Irish stew.

Am sooooo hungry! Need Toffee to send me a meal. I've got to drag my sorry arse to kitchen to feed the troups soon. Not so appealing with a banging head and stiff body :(

Oh and quick rant to iphone keyboard ... Aaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!! Why does it change every single effing word!!!!!

Eatriskier · 10/01/2014 16:36

gecko don't feel disheartened. Grab this opportunity to change things. I've lost over 5.5stone on this alone and it's been easy. OK it's taken a bit of effort but compared to some things it's been a breeze. And I want to carry on fasting even though I've got to my target, because it makes me feel better.

morris you made a point about eating to tdee and not having to fast a while back didn't you? In theory that should work. Though I think most people tend to end up wanting to stick with fasting once it's been successful. My reasons for continuing it is that it's the only thing that's made a difference to my pernicious anaemia symptoms. And that for me is worth more than the weight loss.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 10/01/2014 17:16

eatriskier - watch the company when in the loo. When I had a 18 month, 2.5 and 4.5 year olds I took the middle one in with me and locked the door. Locked us in. Oldest one due to be picked up from school and a free range toddler. He got me out! DH took the lock off and now I never lock myself in anywhere. For a long time I took the phone to the loo with me!

Papayasoup - These are what you get when you look in Amazon. 75 pages of them!

A 5:2 slow cooker book. I don't have it.

I Have This One.

I also have this and it is good.

Two books from Lakeland. Mine doesn't seem to be on there any more but I suspect these two have the same or similar recipes.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 10/01/2014 17:23

Msdunny Hello & Welcome!

Wow! 7lbs that's brill! Thanks Cake

My first ever 3 fd resulted in 5lb loss and it certainly helps to get you going mentally, even if it is largely water weight and bloat. I haven't looked back and am a stone of my 4+ stone to lose, in.

Care to share a little more about yourself, your current stats and where you want to get to as well as motives for 5:2??

TalkinPeace · 10/01/2014 17:38

Gecko
I'll let you in on the secret of this way of eating and why so many of us stick to it.
You have rather more to lose than I do
BUT
On a Monday our calorie allowance and meal plans are identical
We are all in the same boat - tummies rumbling before our main meal.
And that is how it will stay.
I see no reason to stop fasting and therefore those of us who are old hands know exactly how you feel on those two days a week.

BsshBossh · 10/01/2014 17:41

Oh cuckoo big hugs and get well soon!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 10/01/2014 17:45

Cuckoo if you were near me I would definitely send you a meal and mixed berry muffins to finish.

zedzedzed · 10/01/2014 17:48

Thanks 'papaya'! They're totally worth it...but I miss my old clothes so much!

Was it big choc about the high BMI/beginner exercises on other thread? Cheers, will check 'em out.

Um...you know what's weird, despite what the scales say (shocking still) I don't feel like I'm in that club, know what I mean?

I don't have to shop in special shops, as if that matters, I don't have any actual weight-related health worries or any other health worries (besides psoraisis and wibbly post-preg ligaments) no diabetes problems, no breathlessness etc etc. I feel pretty healthy really, just fat. The idea that I'd have to do special high bmi exercises is shocking to me even if it's true! (though I'm not sure it is).
I don't struggle with any of my many daily activities, there's no chaffing or waddling...I think the word obese has floored me as I associate it with those poor giant Americans who can't get out their houses. Not me, I'm just a chubster...yeah, right, with ONLY 100lbs to lose...

AND I'm 'only' a size 18! How do I weigh this much...am I lead-lined? Anyhoo, am dealing with it now, regardless of the words I use to describe myself.

Thanks again for all the support everyone. I'll bend your lugs less soon, fear not, I don't intend to dominate the conversation forever!

TalkinPeace · 10/01/2014 17:48

RAvenousRunner
re office drinks .....
the easy way to not eat any of the crisps or nibbles ....
ask yourself how well each of your colleagues washed their hands before dipping their fingers into the bowl
you'll never touch a works biscuit tin again with that thought planted in your head Grin

RavenousRunner · 10/01/2014 17:52

tip Oh...oh! Oh no! It's bad enough that there are stacks of magazines in the loos! That's killed my craving entirely. Thanks.

That said, I bet they do a better job than my sons, and I share snacks with them. It'll be individual bowls for the popcorn tonight.

MazzleDazzle · 10/01/2014 17:58

I will weigh myself tomorrow morning (last FD of this week) and then I swear I will not weigh myself until the morning after my last FD day next week.

Thank you to everyone who has offered their support.

FD today and zero cal so far. Had my first FD workout too and I felt fine.

After reading about 'big girl' press-ups on here I really went for it today and after years of thinking I can only manage my knees, I managed a few real ones! Not huge ones, but it's a start. I'm committed to giving them a bash everyday.

Welcome to all the new folk on here. You have the help and support of the fabulous fasters on this thread to guide you!

BsshBossh · 10/01/2014 18:04

zedzed me too! When I was BMI 36 I felt absolutely fine. Fit, healthy, no struggle with chaffing thighs and getting out of breath etc. I didn't feel fat at all. Yes, it was annoying that I couldn't dress in exactly what I wanted (I like small, independent designers who simply don't do size 12+) so I wasn't happy with my personal style (I felt a bit frumpy) but I was confident in my skn and my DH still fancied the pants off me despite being half my size and very fit. For me it was and is all about my future health. Seeing my overweight mother and her overweight friends and family members living physically compromised lives in their 60s when they had led healthy but overweight lives in their 40s and even 50s... well, that's been the eye-opener for me: I had my DD in my late 30s and need to be healthy for her future as well as mine. But yeah, I hear you on feeling fine whilst being overweight :)

BsshBossh · 10/01/2014 18:08

Well done on all the weight losses this week, especially all the newcomers!

BsshBossh · 10/01/2014 18:09

Folks, this weekend I will get DH to take my updated BMI 21 "after" photo. I will wear a vest and have the photo taken outside brrrr Grin.
