Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Geckos - nice to meet you. Some how, I felt you and the 8 stones you want to lose got lost under the guineau pig recipes.
So here's cheering you on. I suggest a photo for you too.
I wish I'd done that myself - infact I seem to have managed avoiding the camera so well for so long that I haven't any fat photos at all. Confused

LilyJoAndMe · 10/01/2014 14:18

Toffee - I am prepared to send you the guinea pig recipe for the mouse - might help to shift you off the plateau - varied eating and all that ?

LilyJoAndMe · 10/01/2014 14:18

Ooooooh Dino Confused!

MakeTeaNotWar · 10/01/2014 14:20

Hello can I join? I've just turned 38 and weigh the heaviest I have ever been. I am 5' 5" and today weight 65kgs. Pre DC 3 years ago, I was steady at 56kg so a significant gain for me. I feel intimidated by 5:2 and ate an enormous lunch today in contemplation of beginning this on Monday. I don't eat meat so any pescetarian / veggie food ideas welcome.

My stats are
5' 5"
65kg
BMI 23.5
Body Fat 29.7%

One week in and 2 fast days completed. Have lost 5 lbs... Whoopee.

Have now got a tape measure and will do the deed later, but can someone explain why not weighing every day is better. I do weigh daily, and have found it quite motivating so far, but am prepared to learn.

MelanieCheeks · 10/01/2014 14:30

MakeTea, you're already at a healthy bmi, so any loses will be reeeeeaalllly slow.

What is intimidating you?

Dotty342kids · 10/01/2014 14:31

Bssbossh that's brilliant! Well done to you.

I seem to have shifted 2 of my 3lbs from Christmas so happy with that. And I did the Squat Challenge last June and currently on Day 6 of it again! Don't know why we do these things to ourselves Grin

MakeTeaNotWar · 10/01/2014 14:32

melanie I'm afraid of being hungry, of the discomfort. I eat out of boredom (my job is very slow at the moment), I eat the kids leftovers and am very partial to beer.

Msdunny · 10/01/2014 14:44

Decided to jump in. I have been lurking 2:5 threads for ages but only started and did my 4th fast yesterday. I have already lost 7Ib! I absolutely love this wol and finally feel I have some control in my life Grin and it all thanks to all of you!!

MrsFlorrick · 10/01/2014 14:55

Dino Shock. That said I've rated deep fried cows brain in Romania. And not tasty either. Like salty watery very over cooked cauliflower without texture but sort greasy. Blurgh.

MrsFlorrick · 10/01/2014 15:01

Bssh. Eatriskier Zedzed.

Yes I am very happy it's not the vom bug. It's the stuff of nightmares.

Still poor DD isn't great. She is still vomiting every so often.

The antibiotic and calpol stayed down so fingers crossed she will feel better soon. I am very sad for her as I know how painful it is.
The female pharmacist winced after looking at the prescription and at poor dd who was slumped in the stroller with a little tear down her cheek Sad

Anyway. She is in bed having a nap. DS is being allowed TV and lots of it to keep him happy and quiet while DD rests. So he is over the moon.

MrsFlorrick · 10/01/2014 15:04

So many new people here Grin its great!! We are all happy to see you!

Luckily it's a NFD here. I've eaten a few falafals with salad and two rounds of toast. For the first time this week I am hungry though. Actually very hungry. Good job I was planning a decent dinner. Steamed cod fillets with greens and possibly some form of potato

Papayasoup · 10/01/2014 15:07

On account of being in my phone and it being Friday NFD and having had my share of the Wine tonight I again apologize for my inability to remember everyone, especially when I catch up on 3 pages in one go!!! Brilliant and welcome all

Well done everyone who's had 2 fasts this week for the first time, you've been AMAZING! But remember slow and steady wins the race.

I did get rather alarmed when I read that zed had wee that was blood orange and though that poor mrs f's dd's infection was catching.

zed well done on your first step to a healthier you and a great role model for the babies

mrs F I do hope you can still go out for your posh meal, you so deserve it.

RavenousRunner · 10/01/2014 15:15

Darnley I'm with you on the weighing - provided one has a good WOE like 5:2 and aren't tempted to starve yourself or cry when the scales don't say what you want. Once I stop weighing myself, I inevitably gain weight, because I start thinking 'Oh a third second portion of chips isn't that bad, my clothes still fit. I try to bounce around where I want to be, so pre-crazy Christmas weight gain I figured as long as it was between 144 and 146.5 I was fine. Then I stopped weighing myself and lo and behold it was 152 the next time I looked!

Also I don't have the disclipline without the reinforcement. If I see I've lost even a tiny bit, I'm motivated to keep it off, and that can help my willpower in the face of salty goodness (I can take or leave the sweets, I have man-style food problems in that I can knock off a kebab, chips and a bottle of wine without blinking). Plus I am a stats geek so I need a number to put into MFP and Runkeeper - and I want to know that my calories burned count when running is accurate. So I will keep weighing. I will not be like my nutty DH who weighs himself after dinner and then complains that he's gained 3 pounds! First thing in the morning, before even a sip of water, no clothes.

Papayasoup · 10/01/2014 15:17

My 2 FD this week put right the slight holiday gain. for anyone who doesn't know I'm now makntaining.
However I had my monthy weigh in at the gym after no exercise for at least 3 weeks. My weight is the same but I have gained 1% of body fat and extra cm on my thighs and hips. Yes, I am a pear! Confirmed what I was thinking, that it was all a bit more jiggly down there! And of course the TDEE they calculated for me has gone down. I know it is not accurate but showing a trend nonetheless. It also reinforces that I really need to focus on toning this year as not only will it help te jiggle but it'll mean I have more efficient body tissue (ie muscle instead of fat) so I can enjoy everything perfectly guilt free!

Geckos48 · 10/01/2014 15:21

yes I hoped the 8 stone thread would kick off because it is quite disheartening to be on support threads with people who have got a stone to lose, talking about feeling fat in size 12 clothing and stuff... I know everyone is on their own journey but I think its important to have relevant support and i dont think I could offer support to someone with half a stone to lose any more than they could support me (unless they have already lost 7.5 stone of course!)

I had a bit of a fasting mis-hap this week. I was using diet Dr Pepper and diet Fanta to help me through and right next to all the diet drinks was a cherry 7up which i assumed was also diet, well when I went back to get some more I realised it wasn't :(

So for two of my fast days I drank full-fat drinks :(

Oh well, I already seemed to have lost some weight so thats good. I did eat a bit of choccy and a few crisps today but I am fasting again tomorrow.

Thats what I love most about this diet, that you dont have to feel constantly guilty for stuff and I can just say 'I really want this but I will eat it tomorrow'

Papayasoup · 10/01/2014 15:27

To finish my previous post, this makes perfect sense as why the weight crept up. Prior to DD I was relatively fit and then she came along and I dropped it all from one day to the next but didn't really change my eating habits but as muscle went down weight went up and before I knew it I was a stone up. Just goes to show that exercise is not just to allow you to eat more on the day but longer term as well. And really that is all I want! It just reinforced once again my goal for this year and made me happy I started exercising again in the summer.

This being said, I did 6 months on 5:2 before I reintroduced exercise but I'm so glad I've started to now. I have to admit that even though research shows that IF results in less muscle loss I definitely noticed I'd lost muscle, which spurred me on. But I'm the slimmest I've been in my whole life so I can't say whether the muscle loss would have been less or more by other means.

The point of rambling post is settle in but do think of exercise in the not too distant future.

MelanieCheeks · 10/01/2014 15:29

Make Tea, why are you afraid of hunger? It - literally - is not going to kill you. Discomfort? Might be a few tummy rumbles, but unlikely to be anything more serious than that.

You say you're eating out of boredom - that's not good. Well, it's good that you are aware of it....

Papayasoup · 10/01/2014 15:30

bssh well done, so close!

Papayasoup · 10/01/2014 15:36

maketea my stats were similar to yours a year ago.

I reckon I hadn't felt hungry before starting 5:2 for 12-18 months!
My DH doesn't fast with me but he's taken away one lesson, which he told me about yesterday, after a year of me banging on about it. He is now trying to only eat when he is hungry. Hunger is not bad, quite to the contrary. And tip is so right snacking is not necessary or healthy. Your calories will go so far when you save them for your meal. Just try it!

Papayasoup · 10/01/2014 15:40

Sorry slightly of topic and not at all as entertaining as yesterday's banter about the pigs but I've decided to get a slow cooker in an attempt to be less time poor in the evening and maybe get some exercise in.
toffee if I remember correctly you have one and use it a lot. Any recommendations and do you use a specific cook book?

BigChocFrenzy · 10/01/2014 15:41

Zed There are a few routines on my exercise thread Here for those who have high BMI or are at beginner level. Check out: interval walking, beginners spin, stretching etc.

Have a look: Masses of info there, something for all levels.

You might want to try the Body Fat calculator, to get an idea of where you are, because BFat % is more important than BMI for health.

zedzedzed · 10/01/2014 15:42

lilyjo Yup, just created a profile on here, have NO fat photos to upload as I've been avoiding the lens since gaining 100lbs,strangely enough, ...denial, not just a river in Egypt.

May take a faceless, anonymous one soon, hopefully for looking back on in horror not longing.

Hahahaha! No blood-orange wee here! Just Scottish and use the word wee...a lot.

RavenousRunner · 10/01/2014 15:44

Minefield of Friday night office drinks approaching - I don’t go often but when I do I plonk myself down by the posh crisps and eat most of them to accompany my wine, and then go home and eat dinner, and popcorn on the sofa with the boys after. I will eat 10 and enjoy them all. If I quantify it and tell you all maybe I can actually exercise some self-control…if you hear loads of crunching send a mental head smack my way.
