Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Am in the park with The Boy, there are outdoor exercise machine things here for the adults, have done 20 reps on all 6 and 50 squats, also ran for bus so pthrrrrrrp to y'all! (and thanks). (yeah, knees & ligaments already knackered from preggo hormone, relaxin, & extra weight has exacerbated, feel very old these days) Off to get in yummy supplies for NFD tomorrow. Duck and green beans and maybe even a wee fruity pud. YAY!

TimeToPassGo · 10/01/2014 11:00

My Paul McKenna emotional eating book arrived. Reading through it now but will update with feedback Smile Interestingly he says he wrote it for people who tried the old system but just stopped even though it was working - because emotional eating was just so habitual. That's me alright!

Also I started WW Discovery Plan on Monday but combined it with a bit of 5:2 stuff. So far this week I have lost 6lbs! This is mostly water weight esp because first measurement was taken at the heaviest point in my cycle. Giving me a bit of encouragement though. I am going to eat a decent amount today and tomorrow to compensate. Chinese for dinner tonight and out for lunch too Smile Doing 5:2 first really helped me not be afraid of being hungry for a couple of hours. Also hoping the book will help me get on top of my desire to munch in the evenings.

ElenorRigby · 10/01/2014 11:03

Very strange diet this.

I've had 2 fast days and Im only 4 days in. This morning I went to have a reduced portion English breakfast. One hash brown, one toast, 2 eggs, 1 sausage, mushrooms. It nearly killed me to finish it! Shock
A week ago Id have had wolfed the lot with a choc bar thrown in!

Aside from that my blood pressure is down (work in hospital so test myself) and oxygen satuaraion is up! Weird.

Also Ive lost 3 lbs! I can hardly believe this!

ELR · 10/01/2014 11:20

Morning all, just caught up on the thread.
mrsf your poor little piggies, if you need to hide them bring them round to me I've got a lovely warm shed for them! Also hope the d&v clears up quickly but on the plus side if you do get it think of the weight loss, every cloud and all that!!
bshh your 1.4 lb weight loss must of hot footed it over here and stuck to my arse coz I'm up by that exact amount today after two fasts too! Oh well feeling a little bloated so it's prob that there's no way I've gained!
zzz loved your description of 30day shred def something you want to do once and maybe never again! A friend and I did it for the first time last year and the next morning my friend had to take diclofenac for the pain(she's a high flier in the NHS so got a college to perscribe).
Anyways off to do some shopping, NSV made myself a cuppa and got out an aero biscuit to go with it but then thought of b&w s wait 20 mins and see if you still want it well I did and I haven't eaten it! Also I'm practicing his clench thing too and it's working! So if everyone could just slip the word clench into every post I'll have a pelvic floor to die for!

BetsyBell · 10/01/2014 11:34

ElenorRigby Strange because it's working…? Grin

Update. Not D&V. Phew. Dd has a urine infection.

She wasn't vomiting this morning but her wee was so smelly so I took her to the doctors and yes that's what it was. Poor DD. she is miserableq

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 10/01/2014 11:55

eatriskier - I think that is all working okay Grin.

ElenorRigby - remember you don't have to finish the plate Smile.

Someone mentioned poo. I just cleaned up a massive mountain of it. My cats might be 2 and under but OMG they can so big ones Hmm!

MrsFlorrick · 10/01/2014 11:57

ELR Grin. The piggies are ninja piggies. They do my JM workouts with me and squeak at me to dig deep and fight for it Wink

Bigchoc you may be able to do grown up press ups but I run really really fast even when laden down with a massive choc stash. Catch me if you dare! Wink

Eatriskier · 10/01/2014 12:03

Sorry toffee. I thought you said you were a bit blocked. Must have confused you with someone else Blush

Eatriskier · 10/01/2014 12:03

mrsf glad it's not d&v. Hope your Dd gets well soon

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 10/01/2014 12:09

Eatriskier - I am stuck as in can't lose any weight! Grin.

TalkinPeace · 10/01/2014 12:17

How often should I weight myself?
No more than once a week.
Seriously, lock the scales in the boot of the car, or DHs car so you cannot access them.
Learn to listen to your waistband.
I do not own a set of scales. I weigh myself at the gym, once a week, in the same clothes, after my swim, before a class.
Therefore the numbers are comparable.

THen again they have just changed my class timetable and I could not weigh in today.
Ah well, I know that my jeans are looser than last week. That'll do.

Pizza and Wine tonight. Nom Nom

ELR · 10/01/2014 13:07

Just wanted to add that even though I weighed 1.4 more than last week I've lost 1.5 inches on my waist and off my hips and 1/2 inch off each thigh and under bust. That is def a better indicator of how you are doing!
Just had a bacon and egg sandwich it was delish!

BsshBossh · 10/01/2014 13:14

ELR that's the perfect example of how measuring is often better than weighing. Well done you!
MrsF what a relief (though not for your poor DD... ouch).

zedzedzed · 10/01/2014 13:24

Poor MrsF's brood! Water infection's not quite as bad, hopefully, as a house full of vomit plague. Still, poor lamb.

2nd FD continues, liquids only since last night 9pm, it's totally fine, not a problem...don't hit me/point and laugh but...it's easy! (maybe because I'm used to starving myself unhealthily for months on end on other 'diets' over the last 30yrs, but THIS I could stick to forever,(IF I lose consistently), because of, (broken record) tomorrow:

I've just bought a wee blood orange creme brullee, a duck breast and spring greens for tomorrow's special weekend NFD.

Even if I haven't lost ANYTHING this 1st month (inconTHEVEable) I'm certainly choosing more varied food than the pasta, pasta, pasta, mincepies, more pasta that was the last 3wks; spring greens would've been bottom of the list of stodge). Also, I'm cooking better/more varied meals for my son as a result of having better leftovers/fridge pickings.

Woo and also hoo.

I may even squat again tomorrow.

BsshBossh · 10/01/2014 13:27

zedzed naturally choosing healthy options so early in yur 5:2 journey is a splendid NSV. Sterling work :)

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 10/01/2014 13:29

Friday weigh-in: -1lb on pre-Christmas. Do I qualify for SWATH?? Grin

Absolutely must get rid of scales at home because I can't stop weighing myself midweek either Sad bad habit.

Happy weekend everyone, and Friday FDers, go go go!

zedzedzed · 10/01/2014 13:33

RavenousRunner · 10/01/2014 13:41

My DS uses 'squat' as a humourous alternative to 'taking a poo', as in:

'Where's your father? We need to leave right now!'
'He's still in the loo. Maybe he's squatting.'

11 year old boys are so odd.

The thought of a 30 Day Squat Challenge and all the related posts are killing me.

LilyJoAndMe · 10/01/2014 13:50

Wow!
Can't believe how FAST ( is that how 5:2 got its name ?- I think) thread 35 is shifting.
I hesitated about not reading all the posts since I last clocked near the end of thread 34. Then I just got stuck in. I've had so much to read I've hardly had any time to make breakfast or lunchSmile.
I'm hesitating about giving up work completely so I can get more involved in this thread ... ( decides to ponder the matter over another cup of tea - not feeling hungry but remembering this is a NFD).

LilyJoAndMe · 10/01/2014 13:56

Zed - marvelous that you went a weighed yourself!
Well done - really well done!!!
Have you taken a photo of yourself ?
I suggest you do - another way of seeing progress without weighing.
I did this just over 2 weeks ago and I can already see the difference.
Unfortunately I took it of myself in my bra and knickers. So it won't be on t'internet. Smile If you decide to do this I suggest you're fully clothed for your photo.

LilyJoAndMe · 10/01/2014 14:04

I live in France and in my French recipe book there is a recipe for guineau pig. I feel too sad to hunt it out for you Big Choc and partner (can't remember who else you managed to rope into your evil plan-sounded like a Mr Fox escapade all over again). Anyways, just to say that maybe the Romans did eat g piggies. But certainly, until fairly recently the French definately did !
Hasten to add, I never have and have never met anyone here that has either!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 10/01/2014 14:09

Does an adrenaline rush = weight loss?

I came home all psyched up to see a mouse courtesy of BoyCat. And right there, by the table was this brown thing, looking more squashed than the usual mice he brings me but hey ho. I then notice one of them has pulled out the bin liner (GirlCat broke the bin lid) and knocked my 2 notes on the flour so I am thinking I really do love the cats Hmm. I go to get some kitchen paper and get the bin liner ready to pick up the mouse telling myself it needs to be done and to just do it. I was feeling so brave. So sure I could do it. And I did.

It was a massive brown leaf Blush.

BoyCat has only just got in, thankfully without a real mouse.

DinoSnores · 10/01/2014 14:14

I've eaten guinea pig in Peru. I was given it for lunch when I was out working in the Amazon jungle. Wasn't the tastiest thing I've ever eaten!
