The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Hello again. I made it back. I've not been on one of these threads for a good few months, and unfortunately in those months also managed to put on a good few lbs too.

I have managed a few FDs in that time but was more 16:8ing. Had a very indulgent December, and I am just back from a long weekend in Budapest which involved lots of beer, mulled wine and hearty food.

The good news though I suppose is that I am still about 10lbs lighter than I was this time last year.

Managed first FD of the year today.

Looking forward to catching up with you all.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 08/01/2014 02:05

Bloody insomnia!! Can't blame it on 5:2 though as haven't managed a fd until today for 3 wks!

BC - I don't tend to eat on fd anymore. Certainly not meals anyway. This would not have happened today if I hadn't actually decided I would abandon fast day in favour of a carby meal. Just happened to change my mind again at last mo and fortunately managed to come in around fd target, as I'd only had green tea until dinner this evening.

Feels good. Was worried for a bit I would lose my 5:2 mojo after the Xmas 3 wk hols. But can feel it seeping back in after today, am pleased to report. Phew! Am fantasising about roast potatoes now though!!

Hopeful I am on mission to use up whatever's in fridge before doing first post Xmas shop. So tonight's meal was how that came to be. The bacon was prob between 3-4 slices cut into strips (my half). I had previously snipped it and put it in fridge ready for use and had already started cooking before deciding on 'salad' version so can't give exact measurements. It could have been made with less for same impact I reckon. Was smoked bacon so didn't need any seasoning except for pepper (and chilli).

Wecome back itsaboat Smile

TheBitchesOfWeestick · 08/01/2014 06:55

Cuckoo that sounds amazing, so good in fact that you've strengthened my resolve to fast today instead of tomorrow. I have all the relevant stuff in the fridge to recreate your masterpiece Grin

Eatriskier · 08/01/2014 07:44

hopeful there will be some difference between them all but I have noticed that not all calculators have the same number of exercise levels in them, so your 1740 one may have been on what someone calls light exercise but the 1880 one may have been what the first one considered moderate exercise. If you want to see if they are compatible try them both at sedentary

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 07:45

Well done Cuckoo! Your dinner sounds delicious.

Welcome back itsaboat.

I was upset this morning as I am still 160lbs. Today I plan to just have my winter veg soup whenever I am hungry and hopefully tomorrow will see a minus on the scales.
23.12 - 159lbs
24.12 - 158.
26.12 - 160.
27.12 - 160.
29.12 - 161.
3.1.14 - 159.
4.1 - 159.
6.1 - 158.
7.1- 160.
8.1 - 160.

Any clues from where I am going wrong? Confused.

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 07:51

Hmm, I'll have a look at other Tdee calculators and see whether there's a better one for the next op. the original one we had up there disappeared off the web.

Iirc the main difference between the two are the number of exercise level options - there's more on the current link.

Let me know any thoughts...

I checked some that Bssh and Bcf linked too on another thread but they were more complicated - I feel it needs to be as straightforward as possible for new starters wanting to get going right away. Especially as most people don't want to think about calories on NFDs.

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 07:52

Toffee - you're not going wrong, that's just normal fluctuations x

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 07:58

Thanks BetsyBell. Was sad to see on my other chart I was 157 on the 20th Dec but I suppose that isn't huge. I just updated yesterdays MFP and it said if I ate like yesterday every day for 5 weeks I would be 153lbs ShockConfused.

School now. Shopping. Then baking. Keeping busy.

postmanpatscat · 08/01/2014 07:59

Morning all

toffee don't stress, it will shift sooner or later.

Welcome back itsaboat and well done on your fast cuckoo

I'm down another 800g this morning, and 600g yesterday after Monday's FD. Weird how it sometimes kicks in late. I can't say I ate much yesterday tbh, between the school trip and another evening of emotional turmoil with eldest DC.

MorrisZapp · 08/01/2014 08:19

Well my first fast day went well! Better than I expected tbh, although in all honesty I did eat 600 cals when I include tea and coffee, and a few bites of DSs dinner :)

Just enjoyed a decent brekky now and wondering how to spend my lavish calorie allowance today.

Dotty342kids · 08/01/2014 08:21

Good morning itsaboat Smile. So, I've remained on the plateau that I've been on since about September!! Of between 10st 4 - 10st 7lbs. For me though, I know that's because I've taken my eye off the ball with regards to NFDs and basically eat what I want (rather than what my TDEE is).
I'm back to post Christmas fasting and exercising regime and am approaching my 1st 5:2 anniversary and can cheerfully say though, that this is part of my lifestyle now. Fast days are a normal part of my week, I enjoy the feeling of lightness and energy that they give me and see no reason to stop.
Would still like to find a sticking point that's about 3-4lbs less than my current one but my body seems to like being this weight so it'll require some concerted effort on my part Grin

MelanieCheeks · 08/01/2014 08:23

It's tempting to think that if we calculate exactly the right number, and log everything we eat and exercise, that results should automatically follow. Sadly, all those numbers are very fuzzy estimates, and bodies dont respond that quickly.

I've just thrown the last 2 mince pies in the bin. They were past their use by, and I'd rather have chocolate and wine for treats.

russianmule · 08/01/2014 08:24

Second FD for me today and managed to get DH to try too so his first today. Although I had an awful sleep last night, hoping that it doesn't have an ill effect on my will power.

First week weigh in tomorrow. Will I see any loss or is it usual to take a while to kick in?

mscnile · 08/01/2014 08:29

Toffee that looks like you've maintained well over Christmas and will soon be losing again. Don't forget its a slow, steady and sustainable WOE!

Hopeful I work on 1700 TDEE on NFDs in the week too and I'm also aiming for 65kg (69 at the moment) - weekends are another matter though!

FD for me, working all day and ferrying DTs this evening, so should be ok.

Happy fasting!

zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 08:37

Morning.Lovely to find everyone here already!
Total 5:2 newbie here, I can't get to town today to get weighed to calculate TDEE, but don't want to wait so have jumped straight in with my first ever FD today.
Have measured out my milk in a jug as I have a feeling I'll need a lot of tea/coffee throughout today! Think I'll just do tea/coffee/water till tonight, then see if I need to eat. Am also dodging a playgroup this morning as it's Cake Wednesday!
Have a plan to bundle up the babies and hack down all the weeds/ branches in the garden to stay busy...I'll just keep thinking about 'I can eat it tomorrow' so useful that.
I entered my details and guess-timated weight (based on my worst fears/last time I was weighed non-pregnant) and I seem to be getting a TDEE of over 2000!!! This has filled me with dread as I've never lost weight on more than 1200 before...but then it's never lasted, body has gone all starvation-y and I guess if the FDs give you a deficit and the woe allows you to stick to it...it should pan out...right? It just seems like SO MUCH!

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 08:42

Try it out zedzedzed - it sounds like your metabolism has never quite found its way so part of this WOE is retraining yourself and your body to a have a normal, healthy relationship with food.

Another thing you can try, if that really does feel like too much food, is find out what your tdee is of the weight you are aiming for - your tdee shrinks as you do so you have to readjust your eating habits anyway!

frenchfancy · 08/01/2014 08:48

toffee what do you mean going wrong? It looks to me like you are going right. You managed to get through Christmas and new year whilst maintaining your weight. Have you ever done that before? (I know I haven't) If you can maintain over the festive period that proves that you will be able to maintain once you get to your desired weight.

zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 08:50

Thanks betsybell Yeah, will do what I'm told calorie-wise and see what's what in a month maybe. But if I were to only eat the TDEE cals of the weight I'm AIMING for, which would be a LOT less, won't that put my bod into that starvation mode thing that slows your metabolism and sabotages your weight loss? Maybe I've misunderstood it...again!
Great point about remembering to re-calculate your TDEE as you lose weight, I wonder how many people plateau and don't remember to do this!

Eatriskier · 08/01/2014 08:53

zed I personally didn't eat at goal TDEE, preferring to drop it down as my weight dropped. With the fasting resetting the hunger levels I found this very achievable even with my own rapid weight loss. I'm not sure I'd have gotten on eating at TDEE for someone who weight nearly 80lbs less!

zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 09:08

Yeah, I think that's where I've gone wrong before, eatriskier by eating WAY under what I should in an effort to lose a lot of weight as fast as possible; when you finally wake up and see what you've done to yourself it's hard not to want to change overnight so you don't have to look at that wreckage anymore eh?
But it clearly hasn't worked long-term. So here I am, again, with an (estimated till tomorrow's dreaded weigh-in) 70lbs to lose...again...but if I could lose an average of just 1lb a week for 18months, I'd be there, and if I could maintain that by eating normally with one fast day a week, I'd be delighted. I'm so dizzy from the yo-yo-ing, everyday since I was 14yrs old. I want off! I don't wanna think about this any more; it's so dull and a waste of my brain space.
Right. More water. More gum. I can eat it tomorrow. Wow. that totally works. :)

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 09:09

zedzedzedOnce you realise how much butter, cheese, full fat yogurt and olive oil dressings, nuts and seeds you can now eat on this WOE you may find your proper tdee is not so much after all!

If you're calorie counting you need to include everything - even those bits you nibble while your cooking count, those leftovers that needed tidying up. It all adds up.

What's your goal Zed? Are you aiming for a particular weight or BMI?

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 09:11

Have a look at eatriskier's before and after pictures on her profile (click on her name) zed - that will give you all the inspiration you need.

zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 09:17

betsyb I'm aiming for my stretchy size 10 jeans from 3yrs ago (pre two babies) I'm a size 18 now, and also I really want to have a healthy bmi. But MOST importantly, I never want to go on a diet again, I do NOT want my baby girl to see my bad habits, I want her to learn to be healthy, right from the start...she had her first tastes yesterday, banana mush...she loved it...long may that continue for her.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 08/01/2014 09:21

Bloody hell eatriskier just looked at your pics that's amazing and over only 6 months.

I'm on a fast day too zedzed I'm braving the playgroup though so will need an iron will later. I've also measured out some milk for teas through the day. Best of luck
