The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I have just put in to MFP my calories for my lunch already had and dinner I intend to have, plus a not allowed snack, and I have 949 calories left!! Hence the having a snack as I suspect I have not being eating enough on normal days, hence the stuck on the same weight for days.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/01/2014 14:40

Cuckoo We missed you - we thought you didn't love us any more
Sad
I totally agree about being in this WOL primarily for health reasons, which is why a few of us like to do one much longer fast every week or so.

I need someone to post CLENCHing routines on the exercise thread, since we're thinking healthy. Can you pop over and visit us on the exercise thread Here

You might find something you fancy. We have all levels from beginner to hardcore, so pick something in the middle.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/01/2014 14:44

I can have it tomorrow is one of the best sentences that has got me through. It really really helps.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/01/2014 14:55

Cathy I low-carbed for years, but put several kg on at the menopause. I had terrible fat feast cravings, so I stopped LC and tried TDEE Mediterranean. However, I boomeranged madly into sweet junk.

Finally, I discovered 5:2, which has restored me to health and stopped the junk food orgies.

I am now trying carb cycling with 5:2, so NOT strictly:
-moderate LC (no starches or fruit) on my training rest day and 2 NFDs
-VLC on my FDs

  • HC (starches, fruit, treats) on the other days.
BsshBossh · 07/01/2014 15:16

Toffee the way I bump my calories up when I think I've not eaten enough is to add a olive-oil-drenched salad to my main meal with extra seeds/nuts or extra mayo to a sandwich or extra grated cheese to a sauce plus a creamy pudding. My appetite has really shrunk so I'm very conscious now of adding calories back in to my meals in a way that I don't feel bloated ( never in a million years would I have ever have believed I'd suffer from this problem! ).

BsshBossh · 07/01/2014 15:18

A glass of milk or milky hot chocolate is another trick I use.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/01/2014 15:48

Yes! What Bssh said - exactly that! I am one of those whose appetite has shrunk so that even though I can have it tmw I find that now come tmw - I turn my nose up. Not always mind you - depends on tom, moon, etc etc but a lot of the time I'm just not interested.
So what I now do is make sure I'm not eating too little volume, AS WELL AS, too little calorie wise - if I'm concerned about under eating regularly.

Potatoes/Pasta/Cheese - all welcome here! Grin [slobber]

Ref LOF (liquid only fasting) - it is different for all. Only way to find out is to try it.

Sometimes symptoms of fasting disappear after while. I used to get headaches a lot. Not anymore. Largely because I .......

.... DRINK WATER ......

like nobodies business!! Incidentally I noticed that the worst times over Christmas for me were when I was away from the tap! My bloatiest days were def my driest water days too.

When weight stalls. The dreaded plateau. Yes you can 4:3 if so wish. But consider that a) it may start to make whole fasting thing feel more difficult in which case not good idea. b) it can just be your metabolism adjusting and can get going again once your weight has stabilised.

I tried 4:3 a couple of times - even did a Friday fast HARDCORE Grin! It was easy on those weeks but they were also good months in my cycle for being able to cope - ie no cravings for tom.

But it did also get moving on its own after stalling without any additional exercise (I've done zilch so far really), if anything I would say increased water consumption helped, so I would......

DRINK EVEN MORE WATER

Think I remembered everything! Sorry if bit random my mob is being shite atm so hard to scroll back!

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 16:07

zedzedzed If you've ben lurking for a while you'll have noticed just how much we talk about food! The food that we get to eat 5 days a week. Grin No pro-ana nonsense here and lots of concern expressed if people appear to be fasting too often or not eating to their tdee often enough.

As for plateaus - we focus on health benefits and carry on as we are. Maybe mixing up fast days. I call plateaus maintaining!

Loss (for those who need to lose weight) tends to average out at around 1lb a week. Likely to be less if you're close to normal BMI.

The important words in that sentence are 'average out' - it's not clear cut, some weeks you may inexplicably gain, others lose nothing. It's a zig zag line that averages out with a downward trend.

Best thing is to just get stuck in and see how you go.

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 16:11

And yes, you can eat anything on your non fast days. Fat is good for you, 'low fat' foods are full of sugar and junk. Just stick to your TDEE or thereabouts and you'll be fine.

Many of us seasoned fasters tend towards eating slightly under TDEE during the week so give us extra allowance for weekend fun.

So it's worth looking at your calorie allowance over a week rather than daily. The fast days give you a lovely big deficit so that will help with weight loss, so you don't need to go without for the other 5 days.

If you overeat beyond your TDEE on every NFD you will probably gain weight.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/01/2014 16:26

BIGCHOC!!!!!!! runs and leaps on BC licking her face like a mad dog (tastes like rice pudding and nuts) (the eating kind that is Wink)

I missed you too! X

Abandon thread!?? Never! (fist pumps air)

We're in this together!!! (smears braveheart style face paint)

Fast to the death!!!! .....errrr....... When we're really, really old that is. Bicentennial man old at that - thanks to all fast health benefits! Grin

MazzleDazzle · 07/01/2014 16:35

Re. the plateaus zedzedzed, I came to this WOE after already losing weight (due to a bug and then from following Weight Watchers) and so for me the weight loss has been slow.

So I tried...

  • Calorie counting on my NFD (stops me binging)
  • 4:3 (if I wanted to push for a bigger loss, or had been out for a calorific meal)
  • 16:8 (didn't have any impact on my weight loss)
  • Exercising more (only just started so we'll see how it goes)
  • Zero cal FD (for me, far easier as I don't have to think about food at all, though sometimes I have a snack before bed if I need it)

Downside of this WOE is that I now drink 2 glasses of diet fizzy drink and 2 coffees on FD, which i never did before, but I'm eating a LOT less sugar 7 days a week.

As betsy said, the weight loss is definitely on a downward spiral, but it's not radical. However, although I'm committed to losing weight, even if I stayed this size I'd be happy to reap the other health benefits.

Good luck!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/01/2014 17:03

BsshBossh - I am having deja vu as I remember now posting about this before Blush. Thank you for being so kind an dnot slapping my face for being annoying again. I am roasting lots of vegetables in the oven to have with some roast lamb I cooked earlier so won't feel guilty for the olive oil I will pour on them. I realise it should be "good" calories but I did enjoy my bag of milk bottles as I haven't had any for months. I am wondering given then I did a 26 hour fast on Sun-Mon whether I should fast tomorrow or Thursday. What would give best results with a stone still to lose do you think?

Cuckoo - I have had lots of experiences of looking forward to something I really wanted tomorrow and then when tomorrow comes I am not hungry. That is my main problem at the moment, not feeling hungry very much at all. I never thought I would ever feel that after always really loving stuffing my face and having food issues.

I drink loads of water and had read 8 glasses a day isn't actually the optimum amount for everyone but I have 4 big beakers a day at least.

TalkinPeace · 07/01/2014 17:16

Holy moley fanoley you lot type a lot while I'm at work Grin

Am utterly ravenous - had a teeny sarnie and a piece of fruit for lunch to break ysterday's fast.
Now planning what to make with Sunday's leftover lamb - probably a curry ... time to get DS reading the Madhur Jaffrey book I got him based on the discussion in the last thread !

NO SNACKING

DRINK A PINT OF WATER

SIT UP STRAIGHT OR STAND UP WHILE YOU TYPE

MazzleDazzle · 07/01/2014 17:25
TalkinPeace · 07/01/2014 17:28

Mazzledazzle
its an amusing historical point - in Jane Austen times it was deemed apalling manners to lean against the back of your chair at meals etc

  • sitting up tall and having a slim waist was ever so important for both men and women.
zedzedzed · 07/01/2014 18:03

Wow! I thought I'd offended everyone and all posting had ceased all day long, then realised we'd moved onto a whole new page! Thanks to all who posted info/advice to me/in general! Really kind of you seasoned fasters to answer the same-old same-olds again. Have decided to definitely commit to this longterm, first fast day on Thursday I think and will go get weighed for the first time since before the babies (I insisted the midwives wrote weight down in my notes in silence as it was so distressing) but if it's the only way to do an accurate TDEE...shudder, dread, fear. I guess as I've a lot to lose I'll be here a while...thanks again.

Southeastdweller · 07/01/2014 18:18

I've just seen the 5:2 'foods' that Lighter Life are selling at Superdrug. £8.99 for a pack of four nut fudge bars - what a joke. And there were more than 20 ingredients Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 07/01/2014 18:29

"Nut fudge bars" are not food. If you want a healthy choc treat, have a couple of big squares (15g) of good quality dark choc, 70-90% cocoa, around 100 cals.

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 18:30

Yurgh, sounds grim SED. Horrific in fact.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/01/2014 18:36

Yuk.

The kids and DH have just been enjoying some seaweed peanuts from Holland & Barrett.

mscnile · 07/01/2014 18:58

NFD, within TDEE, the fasting starts now!

Yay for all today's success (to many to keep up with!)
Boo for rip off so called diet 'foods'
Welcome back cuckoo!
Toffee I love a peanut but seaweed ones? No thanks!

Typing this sitting up straight at my desk (pretending to work)

Not2bObvious · 07/01/2014 19:16

My oh my, just caught up after working for a few hours - love it, I do enjoy catching up on the chatWink
Toffee Sunday was my second 24 hour fast in a week, and last Tuesday I was the same weight as todaySad So I actually maintained over a week, no loss.
Anyway, no point in getting disheartened, it'll come together.
I'm doing a standard 16:8 500 FD on Thursday. No more fancy stuff this week!

Peplum41 · 07/01/2014 19:19

southeast yuk and wharraripoff! Aren't you glad you know the real way to 5:2?

zed you're asking the same questions I asked when I started, but I just sneakily lurked and let every one else pester. Lots of lurkers will be glad you're on here with the questions that matter.

I hope you stick around to deal with the next wave of newbies when you're in a position to answer posts....wearing size 10 jeans, and apparently we've got to all sit up straight now as well as clench, drink water, not snack, do proper press ups...

muffins · 07/01/2014 19:27

Evening all
NFD for me today and I think I've made some sensible food choices today. Think I need to start counting cals to see how close I am to TDEE though. Second FD tomorrow as I'm at work. Got some fish cakes for tea tomorrow, surprised how little calories is in them actually, 215 I think.

I see lots of people have been weighing themselves, I'm desperately trying to keep away from scales til Sunday if I can. I have been known to abandon many a healthy eating regime because of what the stupid scales say! Plus I weighed on thurs after new year binge and was 11.7.0 then on Sunday was 11.4.2 which seems quite a drop for little effort (only started this woe yesterday). So think ill be best off waiting til Sunday when a week has passed. How often does everyone else weigh in?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/01/2014 19:35

Mscnile - they are really yummy. Don't taste of the sea, almost caramelly.

I weigh daily to program it in to my Happy Scale app. It is good as it tells you what you have done over the last 7, 30 or as many days as you are on there.
