The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I have done ok today, only coffee and water ingested so far, now about to sit down to a bowl of Dahl! Smile

BsshBossh · 06/01/2014 19:39

Dotty 3 lb gain is nothing. Well done! It'll be off within a fast or two.

Not2bObvious · 06/01/2014 19:47

Elfin I have a preteen and I don't say anything about fasting or dieting ever to her. She gets more than enough of it when she's in school, mentions the concept of being fat in a derogatory fashion quite a bit , often asks if food is healthy or not. Not sure how to handle the 'fat' comments, I try draw her out on this, trying to understand why she's sees it as such a negative thing, quite hypocritical of me since I obviously see bring overweight as a negative but I'd like to do better for her than I do for myself!
It's a minefield really

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2014 19:48

Betsy My congrats too on your new thread.
Flowers
Some folk have tried very hard to do 5:2, but no WOE can suit everyone, at all life stages.
As you said, maybe your thread will give us insight to deal with future newbies who struggle.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2014 19:51

Toffee Good news that they let you keep your delinquent cats.

Mind you, who else would put up with such scallywags ? Even their own mum booted pawed them out as early as poss !
Smile

BsshBossh · 06/01/2014 19:52

Elfina my DD is 5 and I've decided to be very honest with her: that I'm skipping the odd meal to lose weight in order to be healthy but I'm only doing it because I'm an adult and have stopped growing. She's a very alert and aware little girl but totally understood and no longer comments about me skipping the odd meal. DH does 6:1 but frequently skips breakfast these days now so she sees it as something her mum and dad do.

BsshBossh · 06/01/2014 19:57

Castle I generally exercise on an empty stomach, especially cardio. If I do a heavy weights session then I might have some milk or a banana an hour beforehand. Fasted training is meant to be very beneficial for body fat reduction but I'm sure BigChoc or TiP or another of our exercise gurus here can pull out the research on this :)

Fast day over. Have broken fast this evening with grapes and now am heating up some mushroom and broccoli soup. May or may not have a slice of wholemeal thinly buttered. Will see how I feel.

mscnile · 06/01/2014 20:03

Hello to new or re-starters Bella, Castlecellar, Elfina, Farrow, spilsons, mummy, russian - and about 10 others I”ve missed! I love this WOE, it works for me (tempted to post on your thread Betsy, but haven't yet) and is so flexible you can't go wrong.

Farrow FWIW I usually go as long as possible without eating, I find it easier that way, but others are the opposite – whatever works for you!

Mummy I have fluctuations too so do one ‘official’ weigh-in a week – Thursday mornings after my second fast day – that way I can track long term progress.

Elfin I have 10yo twin girls who know I fast, but also know I exercise and that I eat ‘normally’ the rest of the time. I guess they may be a bit young yet to be overly into body image, but some of the comments they report from friends are quite depressing at such a young age.

I’m on my 3rd hot spicy fruit drink of the day (29 cals, tastes like mulled wine Grin) so will finish on 516 today.

Biscuits hope the first day went well!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2014 20:07

Castle

Once you feel reasonably happy FDing, fasted training can boost fat-burning, or break through a plateau. Different meal times suit different folk.

If I train before lunch, then I don't eat until after, on FDs or NFDs. I have to train on a fairly empty tum, because my training is very intense.

I usually train evenings though, so in that case I have 200-400 cals lunch, and then I eat my remaining cals after training.

Bssh and some others usually have all of their cals after training, whatever time that is.

Check out the exercise thread; see what exercises other 5:2ers are doing.

purplebaglady · 06/01/2014 20:08

just jumping in

BellaI · 06/01/2014 20:24

I've just thrown up just before having my meal. Don't know if it's from drinking fizzy water on empty stomach or a bug. I've still eaten the dinner as was so hungry!

Chocupid · 06/01/2014 20:25

was aiming to do a LOF today, and about to post on here the question of wether having a soup still counted as LOF.

Found myself eating a handful of peanuts Blush
Ah well I'm sure it still counts as a FD as my hands surely aren't big enough to hold 500 cals worth?

Nearly there now fasters.

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 20:25

elfina I have DSs but have been upfront about what we're doing (DH does it too) and explained that it's healthy for us as we've stopped growing but that it isn't suitable for children who are growing. It also coincides with me getting much fitter and generally being a positive role model for health and fitness and we regularly have discussions about what's healthy and what should be considered an occasional treat.

I am hoping that they will not succumb to body pressure issues which are getting to be as extreme for boys as girls these days.

I hope your DD gets through these difficult teen years relatively unscathed.

RavenousRunner · 06/01/2014 20:28

Lunch out put paid to the FD, though I managed to stick with grilled scallops and salmon - the lemon posset was a bad idea and I didn't even really want it! Urgh. Then came home and had more salmon (DH cooks during the week) and salad, now on the herbal tea. I felt just awful today which at least was motivating. Looks like I still had at least 1800 calories, but resisted wine with dinner which is a small victory. My parents drank wine with dinner every night and so do we, but trying to give it up for two FDs a week.

It was so liberating to have a few months where I didn't think about my weight at all...I need to get back to that.

Chocupid · 06/01/2014 20:28

Bella ooh nasty! I ofter felt nauseous and sick to the stomach on a FD when I first started, but it passed after a few weeks, hope it's not a bug.

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 20:28

So many lovely new people - I can't keep up! Welcome to you all :)

Jumping in to a fast or just the thread purplebaglady?! Tell us a bit about yourself…

Cheers bigchoc - I wasn't expecting it to get much attention, thought it would peter out after a couple of posts!

TalkinPeace · 06/01/2014 20:30

Elfina
My kids (15 and 13) love the evenings when DH and I fast as they get to pick their own supper. Tonight it was pasta, pesto and then fruit while he and I had healthy stuff.

I've been very clear that full fasting like we do is only for those whose skeletons have stopped growing.
DD skips breakfast, but so did I at that age.
I don't fuss about it so nor do they.

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 20:32

I got attacked by a handful of nuts today as well chocupid… I'm pretty sure I've gone over by, ooh about a handful of nuts worth? At a guess Grin Shock

Ah well, sipping lemon & ginger tea and the kitchen is now firmly SHUT.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2014 20:38

OMG, Nuts, especially salted / chilli.
I can inhale 100g+, so I have to measure out in advance the nuts I am going to eat and then put the packet away!
Whenever I think I just want a few, so don't bother measuring, I surface 30 mins later, from under a sea of wrappers.

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 20:41

They were at least raw nuts in my case bigchoc - slightly less moreish without the added extras!

I normally avoid completely on FD so now I've decided to award myself credit for stopping at one handful Grin - it's just all about how you look at things isn't it (and thinking about the post-festive scales Shock…)

mscnile · 06/01/2014 20:44

Nuts are my chocolate Grin

nogravitasatall · 06/01/2014 20:48

The first fd is done! Probably went a little over at dinner time, but only had one "normal" cup of tea today, then herbal teas rest of day. Starting weight 11st 9... oh blimey!

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 20:51

We need a nuts addiction thread mscnile! I'm quite partial to a praline from time to time - there's definitely a place for nuts and chocolate.

Ugh, this is a terrible fast day convo, I'm going to refill my herby tea!

Coveredinweetabix · 06/01/2014 20:52

Obviously a month off and eating lots of choc & cake etc has sent me back to square one both in terms of weight & how I deal with FDs as I had to have some food (a 120cal pack of wafer thin roast beef) at 4pm.
Can someone remind me why it has to be 500cal? I actually measured the milk in my tea today & it came to 75 cal. I'm not sure I can reduce my actual food intake my 75cal tho to get below 500. Should I have a sex change just so I can have my tea & 500cal of food?!
MrsF - my DC sound as though their behaviour is just the same as yours. I think we've all seen too much of each other & been cooped up inside too long.
Castle - I'm glad you asked that question as I have been wondering the same thing over the past couple of days. My DD is 4 and she hasn't noticed. I do 4:3 and two of my fast days are on days I work and the children are at nursery so I don't see them between 7.30 & 7.30 so they have had all of their meals without me any way. I expect DD thijks that I have breakfast at work (as I do lunch) & dinner once she's in bed. On the third day, they are at home with me. Breakfast is always airly on the hoof for me as I get them their food, empty the dishwasher etc so DD won't notuce if I've had it or not. For lunch, I will cook veg soup or chicken & veg or something which we all have and then the DC have always eaten separately in the evenings to us so, as far as DD is aware, there's been no change. Having said that, I do want to finish losing weight by the time she starts school in Sept if I can.

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 20:55

I had a random thought - someone recently joked that I was probably quite weak (not quite phrased like that) because I'm slim. Yet when I was 1/2/3+ stone heavier I'm guessing that the same person would have assumed I had got more strength - due to bulk?

I'm very much fitter and stronger now than I was 2 years and 50lbs ago!

Perception is a funny thing isn't it?
