The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

talk to me some more as I read your post and what I think you mean isn't what I am reading

Hi Toffee

Brie parcels:
Make a batch of dough - 1 mug flour to 1/3rd mug water, salt and yeast (or 200g flour to 125ml water).

Knead it for 20-30 seconds, form it into a cob shape, then, using lots of flour, roll it out into a circle several centimetres bigger than your triangle of cheese. Fold the dough over the top of the cheese, cutting off most of the overlap, using scissors.

Use the trimmings for breadsticks - roll them out to the length of the tray.

Place on a prepared baking sheet and leave until the dough becomes risen - you're looking for the dough to get puffy.

Bake at 200/220C for 15-20 minutes until golden. You also need to see some of this colour underneath.

HTH!

Mehefin thanks for flagging Dr M interview on r5, it was really interesting, but gone back to Wrighty on r2 now. Will be trying HIIT for sure, but will write about that on BCF's thread.

devoncreamtea , yummy name, nice post about your friend in her dress, but has she had 4 kids, once v recently? Pilates is really good, like dino says , you look like you're not up to much but if done right its so powerful. I like the Darcey Bussell DVD, I feel addicted to holding my stomach taught when I do it

Peplum41 · 06/01/2014 15:49

toffs glad you're cats will be ok, though they would say that as they've got them coming out their ears. My cats get on well but occasionally wrestle quite viciously, then cuddle up together afterwards. They used to hunt a lot, but I think they're too slow now as I haven't seen any presents for years, but Im sure they still act as a deterrent to little mices.

thekingfisher · 06/01/2014 15:50

Can I join - had done 5:2 last year but fell off wagon but wax lyrical to all about how well I felt on it. Am just recovering from a hysterectomy and illness so have spent last 3 months doing very little exercise based on previous levels.

I am just eating first food today having fasted since 8.30pm last night so feeling good. Have planned what I'm eating ( meaning getting the most from my 500 calories!)

Anyone else starting today?
I only have a few lbs to lose so don't need to go mad but my hyster scar has left a nice fatty roll on my tummy and need to attempt to reduce it!

AGlassHalfEmptyNoLonger · 06/01/2014 15:53

2nd FD here, looks like I'm going to come in at 529 cals, so down 20 cals from Friday :) Oddly enough, the willpower on FD's isnt an issue, I seem to have more problems on NFD's, need to step back and look at meal planning, I think. Am on MFP as ttmc978 if anyone wants to add me.

About to measure myself, but have about 80lbs to lose, as far as the SV goes. Am refusing to weigh myself too often (ideal want to keep it to once a month), and measuring will hopefully be the same.

NSV for today, managing day 2 and not having lunch :)

Hope everyone else is doing well

Peplum41 · 06/01/2014 16:02

Keep going muffin, nearly there! Hows it been so far?

glasshalffull (I think that was your name), did you manage it today? Don't be shy if not...

betsy brave thread you've started about those who have not kept up with 5:2, but I didn't want to comment there incase I sounded smug. Its not for everyone, but I found low carb wasn't for me. A lot of people had very young kids or worked with kids and felt they were too moody. I can be moody when blood sugar is low, but have learned when to fast and when not to, although I work with people (adults) with challenging behaviours, they don't seem to be a trigger, phew. Maybe its because they'd punch my lights out. Little uns and fasting, yeah I could see how that might be testing, sleep deprivation aside.

Peplum41 · 06/01/2014 16:04

Hey Xpost glass! Glad you made it Smile

Im the same, willpower of iron on FDs, piggywiggy on NFDs. Planning and lots of water helps, but its just remembering that.

Dotty342kids · 06/01/2014 16:16

Hello everyone!

Oooh, it's nice to see lots of new enthusiasm as well as some of us seasoned old hacks still lolling about the place Smile

So, after one week of sickness bug, and two weeks of school hols / over eating, I'm about 3lbs up which isn't too dreadful but oh my, today is my first fast in three weeks and it's a killer Grin
Just succumbed to a biscuit but that's me done now until some harissa salmon, new potatoes and salad for my tea at approx. 7pm. Then I definitely think I'll be needing my evening bath distraction strategy to get me through to bedtime.

I'm definitely out of the rhythm of fasting as my normal days are a Monday and Thursday but I blissfully menu planned a shepherds pie in for Thursday. Oops! Might have to move tomorrow's home made soup to Thursday instead. Such a ditz........

Hope the rest of Fast Monday goes well for you all Smile

spilsons · 06/01/2014 16:20

Hello there,

First time posting on here, have just joined! I have just over 4 stone to lose- currently 14st 4 1/4 lbs. Have tried weight watchers & sw- lost about a stone ish each time but struggle to stick with them for more than a month or so. Now I'm fatter than ever!

Getting married next may and want to be around 10st.

Going to be combining 5:2 with 30 day shred (only on non fast days though).

first fast day today- banana for breakfast, slimasoup and 2 crackers for lunch, and then a 280cal ready meal for dinner at around 7pm. Feeling ok- hungry but ok!

Will keep you updated on my progress and wish you all lots of luck! xx

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 16:25

peplum Thanks for that. The responses are quite interesting - I was expecting a bit more vitriol tbh! I started it after coming across comments on other threads slating 5:2, but I'm guessing now that those were perhaps from people who haven't tried it Grin

I find it's easier to deal with challenging behaviour from people who aren't in your immediate family - I work with kids but have no problems on fast days. I could not have fasted when mine were small, I spent a good 4 years being utterly sleep deprived - I was a husk of a person!

Looks like the fasters are doing ok? I caved at lunchtime and had some chicken with salad leaves. I got a bit trapped at home and the kids were eating yadda yadda - we all know the story! Also a bit tired from not sleeping very well after drinking a bit too much of the remains of the Christmas booze. A minor hangover does not help a fast day.

That'll be it for booze in the week now for me. Back to sensible eating/drinking (boring) Betsy.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 06/01/2014 16:46

Thanks Breadandwine. I will have a go.

Peplum41 - I doubt she could have taken them off us since we have had them for seven months. I would not have been happy!

If you were an 8 year olds school cap, where would you be hiding if you weren't where you were meant to be? Doubly Angry as DS2 did not tell me he had two books to read this holiday and has only read one.

mummytowillow · 06/01/2014 16:55

I'm feeling confused not difficult

Last Thursday morning I weighed myself at 14st 10lbs, this morning I got on scales and was 14st 7lbs yay!

I've foolishly just got on them again and I'm 14st 10.5 how can that be and I'm on a fast day. Which the is right one folks as I've followed it 100%.

I know I'm going to be told off for weighing so much but couldn't help it ...

BsshBossh · 06/01/2014 17:02

mummy I gain around 5 lbs during the course of a day, even on a FD; sometimes as much as 8 lbs! The next morning it's all gone so I don't stress about it. It's just your body's normal fluctuations of hormones, inflammation, liquid, food going through your digestive system...

russianmule · 06/01/2014 17:43

I'm starting again after 6 months away and ahem 8lbs heavier. I'm so cross I stopped and looking back can't see why I did. Anyhow. First fast today just had first food, lots of mushrooms with a huge salad and feeling quite satisfied. I'm trying dry January too, so hope to lose a stone for Easter then hoping for another 7lbs before summer.

Not2bObvious · 06/01/2014 17:57

Mummy exactly as Betsy said. Best time to weigh is after 2nd of the week, you can weight inbetween as long as you don't let it affect your mood, fluctuations are completely normal and over time you'll see a gradual drop. In my case it's been slow enough, .6 a week, then might get a 1.2 here/there. Key is to keep going, plod plod plod.
Flipping exhausted now, going to put together dinner in the next 30 mins and then close kitchen

farrowandballs · 06/01/2014 18:02

Hi can I join?
I started my ffirst fast day today on 5:2. I just ate 509 calories of roast topside beef, green beans and broccoli but I spoke to my mum who has been 5:2 since April - and has lost almost 3 stone! - And she said I should eat little bits through day rather than fast all day and then eat a big meal. Bit confused?
Not weighing myself - I know ive got a couple of dress sizes to lose so a long way to go. Found fasting v easy today. Will also be doing vaguely low carb on NFDs and starting shred maybe in a couple weeks.

Eatriskier · 06/01/2014 18:22

farrow for weight loss it doesn't really matter how you eat your 500 calories. MM did it in 2 meals, some people graze all day, a lot of us save it all for one meal (me included, I find its just easier as otherwise I'm always hungry). The beauty of this WOE is that you can adjust it so it works for you. For health benefits though the longer you leave between eating the night before and eating on an FD the better.

farrowandballs · 06/01/2014 18:29

Ok great thanks eatriskier. I am Hopi ng for the health benefits as well as to lose weight. I am hoping this is something I can do as a permanent way of eating - it fits quite well with my lifestyle

TheBitchesOfWeestick · 06/01/2014 18:33

First fast day complete - had tinned soup for lunch and lentil/spinach dhal for tea. Feel sustained but not sated iyswim. Not a bad feeling though. Looking forward to eating normally tomorrow.

farrow my MIL does three smaller meals on fast days but I find it easier to skip breakfast as otherwise I'm just in eating mode for the rest of the day.

BellaI · 06/01/2014 18:34

New to this also, first FD today! Haven't eaten since porridge for breakfast! It's fairly tough but drinking water! Have a headache but had it before started this!
Weigh 11.5 and at my lowest ever before kids etc have been 9.5-10! My waist measurement was 40" more than my DH! BMI says I'm overweight.
I'm hoping I can get on with this as my parents have done well on this diet last year!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 06/01/2014 18:36

farrow when I am on a FD I also save my calories for dinner as once I start eating that is it. It sets the eating monster off. Maybe your Mum has good control! Grin.

Castlecellar · 06/01/2014 18:42

So this is my first fast day (I'm not counting the half hearted
attempt before Xmas!) fasting! I decided to go for as long as possible before eating anything and got to 3pm when I had a tin of soup. Looking forward to stir fry at 8pm then bed at 9pm so I can't eat more food :)
I did a 2 mile walk on my lunch break, which was before I ate. Is it better to exercise after eating or before? Just wondered which would be better.

Elfina · 06/01/2014 18:52

Hello! First fast day here. I tried whilst on maternity leave and found it too hard. Being back at work has made it easier. Cracking headache, and I think I've had too much black coffee...

Out of interest, how do those with teenage/ preteen DDs feel about fasting? I'm a psychologist and I work currently on an eating disorder ward. I know, of course, that boys can an do experience negative body image/ diet culture, but ATM it's predominately girls. My DD is only 14m so I have it to come, I guess I'm just processing how it all fits for me, mentally... Be really interested to hear people's views Smile

ELR · 06/01/2014 18:54

Well just finished my dinner and total for me today is 595 which I'm ok with have had loads of tea today so that's where I've gone over mainly. Although I did have half a date a large spoonful of Rachel's coconut yogurt and one square of dd's chocolate so that's why I've gone over really its nothing to do with the tea!!
Dinner tonight was chicken marinaded in garlic, lemon juice and basil then pan fried in a tsp of oil, we had it with mashed celeriac with watercress folded through and then green beans. It was a hit with everyone the kids had cous cous with theirs instead. I can really recommend the celeriac 300g steamed and then mashed is only 48 calories and you get a massive heap, really filling.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 06/01/2014 19:03

Elfin a I find it easier now I have gone back to work too!

Castle I plan not to let dd know I am fasting. IMO fasting is not a good choice for people who are still growing, so I do not want her seeing it as a good way to lose weight.
