The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

grrrr, just caved and had a chocolate. Only one, and I have a box full, but gutted with myself none the less. Up to 598 cals for the day :( Still, onwards and upwards. Am really struggling tonight but am not going to cave any more> gotta pick a mate up from the station in about 10 minutes, then will come back and chat to my dp before going to bed. Well done everyone who has managed a FD today :)

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 06/01/2014 20:58

FD2 almost over. Not struggled with willpower all that much but did feel pretty sorry for myself all afternoon - went back to the inspirational thread to cheer me up!

Mummy I just did the same, up about 5lbs, really need to kick that habit as it's not good for motivation when you're getting hungry again! Maybe just chuck the scales and rely on my office Fat Club on Friday mornings, which would work well after planned Thursday fasts.

I tried a HIIT class at the gym this evening, WOW that's intense. Managed about 6 of the intervals, but at least I've got something to build on for next Monday.

Thanks for all the encouragement today everyone, happy rest of week!

Chocupid · 06/01/2014 20:58

Ha glad I wasn't alone betsy OMG now dreaming about nuts and chocolate... A deadly combination, pure food porn and not fair on a FD Shock

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 21:02

glass one chocolate out of a box is restrained and moderate behaviour. Properly impressive. Now put it away and announce the kitchen closed! You've done a brilliant fast today and you will feel fabulous tomorrow.

If you want you could have chocolate for breakfast tomorrow - and you probably won't - but you could and that's the important thing! Not banned, deferred.

Southeastdweller · 06/01/2014 21:08

Well done today everyone and wow at Lexington for losing half a stone in five days Smile

DefiniteMaybe · 06/01/2014 21:14

My FD yesterday clocked in at 501 cals was very happy with that. I've been saving all my cals so I can eat at teatime with the dc. I had a cod fillet, brown rice and loads of veg, it's quite filling.
The FDs seem to have shrunk my appetite, on MFP I come in at between 1500 and 1700 cals a day on NFDs. Do I need to be eating more? My TDEE is 2300 cals. I don't know how I'd manage it now tbh I'm absolutely stuffed today and think I had about 1650 cals.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2014 21:20

Betsy'Strength comes from muscle, not from fat. Depends on body composition / training whether a heavier person is stronger than a lighter one.
One usually thinks of the power / weight ratio, say how many press-ups someone can do, to quantify strength.
You are definitely a fitter, stronger Betsy now !
Smile

Castlecellar · 06/01/2014 21:28

Thanks bigchocfrenzy , I will have a look on the exercise thread.
Right I'm off to bed as feeling quite shaky, looking forward to
breakfast!
Good luck everyone
Next fast day is Thursday for me

CJMommy · 06/01/2014 21:33

Well, first FD nearly over and I actually feel good - even more so knowing I can eat my TDEE tomorrow Smile

Last ate at 8.30pm last night then didn't have any food until 3pm this afternoon. Had two small oranges and then dinner at 7.30pm (fishcakes and veg). I've had 550cals so really pleased with myself!

It was a strange feeling after dinner; felt like I could've eaten the same amount again but was definitely not hungry - almost like I am used to being 'stuffed' full of food and I wasn't - does that make sense? Confused

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 21:33

bigchoc In reality it was mostly a jealousy comment from someone. But I still found it interesting that slim should equal weak in someone's eyes. Actually, I'm lucky and have mostly had positive comments from people, so the ones that aren't come as a shock.

I would say that my build for a while was perhaps more 'farmer's wife' - sturdy - I have always have muscly forearms and calfs. I got away with being overweight as I 'carried it well'. It was a bit of a wake up call to realise I was in the obese BMI category. Very motivational though!

Butteredsidedown · 06/01/2014 21:34

FD #2 done and dusted. Feeling good, not really that hungry.

Did 50 cal veggie soup again for lunch and small chicken stir fry for dins.

I can do this!

BsshBossh · 06/01/2014 21:35

Definite have you calculated your TDEE for your goal weight? It might be closer to 1700 cals, in which case you may as well get used to eating at that amount :)

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 21:35

Apologies for all the me me me musings - I was thinking about my 1 year review today!

somewherebecomingrain · 06/01/2014 21:39

Good fast day. Sub 500 with very little difficulty. It's all about tomorrow and not over eating .

farrowandballs · 06/01/2014 21:40

Thanks for all the feedback re how to eat on a fast day. Can I also ask what is a tdee and how so I find out mine?
Does anyone drink alcohol on NFDs? Is it ok to do that?

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 21:42

Hi farrow - you can work out your tdee here - it's stands for total daily energy expenditure - ie how many calories your body needs to function.

Yes you can drink on NFDs!

alwaysanauntie · 06/01/2014 21:54

Hey folks, glad to see so many climbing on the wagon post chrimbo, hope you all enjoyed the hols :)

So, have bounced up from my 5:2 low of 58.8kg 3-4 months ago to 60.7kg this morning (having mostly taken a break from fasting during that time) plus yesterday i barely squeezed into a pair of cords i bought a couple of months ago & have definitely got more of a tummy going on, therefore tomorrow will be my first fast day for aaaaages and fingers are crossed it will be ok.

my appetite is definitely less piggy than pre 5:2, but I'm still not immune to the odd 4000 cal blowout (am not a gym bunny like bigchoc so don't have the excuse of burning it off with exercise), and whoever asked about dizziness a few threads back, i got it throughout my 6 months on 5:2 and not necessarily on fds (partly why i had a break) so will be interesting to see if that returns.

i also need to step away from pastries & snacks (sorry tip, just sooo hard to resist) and not eat food when I'm not actually hungry. Hopefully putting all this down will help me to stick to it, will post when i can again but the thread moves so fast. Also plan to go back to logging on mfp to keep my greedy habits on track...

good luck to all Tuesday fasters (oh, and bssh i got an oven, sink and worktops on Christmas eve, wonderful to have after 11 months but means we've eaten a lot of roasts over the last few weeks Grin). See you tomorrow all, sleep well and dream of full tummies and bad habits beaten!

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 06/01/2014 22:00

Well I'm on 453 calories right now so that's a successful FD. It was easy because I was on my induction at my first day at work. It seems like a really good place to work. I just hope that it carries on like this. Next FD Will be on Friday.

TalkinPeace · 06/01/2014 22:12

well my Fast day supper was the same as DHs ..... his favourite :
One small slice of toast, a complete tin of Whole Earth baked beans with a selection of ends of packes of salami stirred in .... around 550 calories
utterly stuffed - nom nom

farrowandballs · 06/01/2014 22:21

Thanks Betsy although I have just blown it and eaten a big slab of roast beef. Waaaaah

farrowandballs · 06/01/2014 22:26

Oh crumbs. Well I have guessed my weight but I reckon ita prob about right, which gives me a bmi of 28! And 1900ish calories a day. I feel sad.

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 22:29

We are fast day supper twins today tip! Except I had half a tin (as had a small lunch today) with leftover ham stirred in. Lots of pepper and a bit of Worcester sauce too. Yum!

BetsyBell · 06/01/2014 22:30

Farrow It's depressing - but here you are coming to terms with doing something about it. And you will, like so many of us have here. Onwards and upwards! (downwards on the scales though Grin )

TalkinPeace · 06/01/2014 22:31

farrow
you'll be fine .... my old pic is when I was BMI 28 ish ... I now get cross with myself if it goes over 21!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2014 22:31

FD today finished at about 350 cals, with fasted HIIT spin.

Like many here, my Monday FDs have to compensate for a huge, late Sunday lunch.
Also, last night I accidentally ate the 5 lamb chops & roast veg that I had cooked for tomorrow.
Blush
Important rule: Unless I have fasted all day, I cannot eat any supper, because my self-control goes to bed hours before I do.
