The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

190 calories for home made winter veg soup according to MFP.

Not2bObvious · 05/01/2014 19:50

I'm confused, fizzy soup??

BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2014 19:50

Hols over, back to work tomorrow, so I'm just taking stock of 5:2 and me:

2013, several NSVs:
Grin

  • First time ever, achieved SWATH (Same Weight After The Holidays), so not starting NY with a holiday bulge to shift.
  • I mainly 5:2, but I have learned to use ADF as a temporary 10-day tool for holidays.
  • Waist reduced from 30 to 27"
  • BMI red. from 24.9 to 22.6
  • Muscle gain, body composition (23% BF) and shape radically better
  • Nutrition: 5000 cal sugary junk frenzies stopped. I have a big appetite still, but for mostly healthy food with a few sweet treats per week (I don't do perfection). Eating is mindful. 1-2 meals per day and a post-training shake are fine. I only eat if I am hungry, e.g. often zero-cal breakfast.
  • Exercise: HIIT performance improved; fasted training is fine, plenty of energy.
  • General feeling: Heathy, cheerful, not stressed. Fine on FDs. This fits my lifestyle, so is my longterm WOL Smile

2014:

  • Tough Aims: 26" waist and 20% BF without losing muscle
  • To achieve this: Watch the NFDs, try carb cycling, keep training rest days low carb
  • Sleep: Get 8 hrs sleep instead of Kindling half the night -and grow up--.
  • Dig further into the IF / HIIT science

Anyone else want to post their own 5:2 review ? Smile ^^?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2014 19:53

Toffee Cooked veg is not as sensitive as meat, but any soup you don't intend to eat within a couple of hrs should definitely be refrigerated or frozen once it has cooled to room temp.

BetsyBell · 05/01/2014 19:54

bigchoc I'll no doubt be doing a 1 year of 5:2 review in 10 days Shock

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 19:57

Well done BigChoc.

not it was fizzing as it had been left out for 2 days.

DH is on the case trying to fit it in the fridge.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 19:59

My review is pitifully small as can't be bothered to move to get the tape measure out. I know I have lost cms though.

Started at 12 stone 4lbs.
Currently 11 stone 5lbs.

Learnt to only eat when hungry.
Learnt to not panic when first hungry.
Learnt I can eat it tomorrow!

Not2bObvious · 05/01/2014 20:00

Still lost on the fizzing phenomenonGrin Don't mind me I'm sure I'm being stoopid
I wouldn't be familiar with food still being there are 2 days laterWink

BetsyBell · 05/01/2014 20:10

Try leaving a glass of orange juice somewhere warm for a couple of days Not2 - then you'll see some fizzing fermentation… Leave it for a bit longer and you'll see stuff growing in it. Fun for all the family Wink - as long as no one tries to drink it of course.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2014 20:13

Well done, Toffee. I think learning healthier habits is maybe the most important NSV for most of us on this WOL.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 20:17

Thanks BCF.

I confess to having a very small bowl of the soup. More because I scared myself with the post about not doing a 24 hour fast if you aren't healthy, and since I have about 1 stone to lose I figured I am not healthy.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2014 20:28

Fizzy stuff for Not2b & Toffee

Bacteria (including the one that causes botulism), can form inactive spores that survive boiling. Once soup cools below 130°F, these spores can germinate and multiply quickly.

Soup left out for two days probably has high levels of nasty fizz: Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium botulinum or Bacillus cereus.

Toffee Hope you don't get the runs. Don't worry, you are probably like Rasputin.
But everybody: experiments with old food are for the chemistry lab, not your tum.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 20:32

In my TIO it read that you had called me ToffeeBacteria Shock.

Why would I get the runs now Confused. The soup was out for more than 2 hours but it is only veg [hopeful].

BetsyBell · 05/01/2014 20:34

She threw away the fizzy veg soup long ago bigchoc - now she has lovely run-free new soup!

Southeastdweller · 05/01/2014 21:21

BigChoc Thanks for posting that; what a great testimony to 5:2 you are. I'm planning on doing a 5:2 review on my anniversary - January 25th, when I'll be in York, shortly after I've stuffed my face in Betty's. I don't do perfection either Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2014 21:47

Phew, I was worried Toffee meant she drank the fizzy stuff !!
Enjoy your lovely fresh veg soup
Smile

Re Zero-Cal Fasts:
Being very overweight (and you are not) is not a problem for 0-cal fasts - it is good motivation.
"Healthy" just means not having a cold, flu, tummy upset, blood sugar problem, ED etc
Obviously no BFer should 0-cal either.

plecofjustice · 05/01/2014 21:52

Restarting tomorrow after a 2-3 month break (with a few 6:1 's mixed in)

Really looking forward to it - I really need to get back in control of eating and quit the bread again :)

RavenousRunner · 05/01/2014 22:17

Getting ready to fast tomorrow - too much bad Indian takeaway for dinner, then wine and chocolate while watching Lord of the Rings with the boys (inset day tomorrow). Ran 6 miles this morning but hardly enough to make up for that stuffed paratha...
Going to try soup for breakfast tomorrow, in hopes something hot with lots of volume will keep me going. Anyone else tried this? I find with porridge I'm hungry again in minutes.

plecofjustice · 05/01/2014 22:24

I find breakfast is the worst thing. The only time I eat breakfast when fasting is if I do a 48hr fast. Otherwise it sets me up to fail, I'm sooooo hungry by lunchtime!!

RavenousRunner · 05/01/2014 22:29

This does seem to work for a lot of people, but I find I lose more if I actually do eat something in the morning - I think it's harder because my metabolism wakes up and is wondering when more food is coming, but is also burning off calories. If I could just wake up and roll out the door I might manage it, but having to do kids' breakfast if I'm not eating is torture!

CJMommy · 05/01/2014 23:13

Can someone explain how 24/36hr fasts work and how they fit in with FD/NFD's? (I'm a simple soul Smile)

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 05/01/2014 23:18

bigchoc impressive results over the year. I'm going to take my measurements tomorrow so I can check my progress.

toffee glad the fizzy soup is in the bin.

I need to put the baby in his night nappy and give him a feed but he is sleeping so peacfully it seems cruel Smile.

Had a bit a of an unhealthy cake fuelled nfd, not fasting tomorrow but will try and behave myself a little better.

BsshBossh · 05/01/2014 23:19

Biscuits good luck with the job tomorrow. If you can, check in with us especially as you're planning a FD.

BigChoc lovely, inspiring review and preview :)

hopefulgum · 05/01/2014 23:23

I am a bit lost. Why are people doing 0 calorie fasts? Aren't we supposed to have 500 calories? Is the zero calorie thing for quicker weight loss? Or better health outcomes?

TBH I don't think I could do this if I had to do 0 calories. I still feel hungry on fast days, not so I'll eat too much, but I do feel I need (want?) the calories I do have.

It's fast day for me (Monday in the southern hemisphere). Yesterday was a total blowout. I think I may have overdone it,and didn't even bother putting it in MFP, there was just too much. After a light breakfast and a long walk on the beach, the whole family got stuck into a jigsaw puzzle, then I thought how nice it would be to have scones with jam and cream. So my daughter made them and we ate them for lunch! If that wasn't bad enough, I then had an afternoon tea with friends, so ate chocolate cheesecake brownies and lemon cake. Topped it off with fried rice for dinner, followed by more rice with butter and coconut sugarShock I hate to think how many calories it added up to, and it was an absolute carb-bomb!

So much for not eating grain.Sometimes I just have to have a blow-out I guess. But it's back on the wagon today.... thank goodness!

BsshBossh · 05/01/2014 23:23

CJMommy. Example of 24 hour fast if your FD is Monday:
Sunday: Stop eating 8pm. Sleep.
Monday: Eat up to 500 cals no sooner than 8pm. Sleep.
Tuesday: Normal eating resumes.

Example of 36 hour fast:
Sunday: Stop eating 8pm. Sleep.
Monday: Consume only liquids (generally zero to very low cal) all day. Sleep.
Tuesday: Resume normal eating from 8am.
