The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

CJMommy
what is Miso Soup?
there are two answers

(a) packaged stuff with lots of extra salt and goodness knows what else that costs lots and tastes foul

(b) a spoonful of 'miso paste' (any supermarket) and a stock pot, into a bowl with enough boiling water to dissolve, half a spring onion chopped in. Stir. Pour into a soup bowl, top up with cooler water, sprinkle over the other half of the chopped spring onion. Enjoy

Guess which one I prefer Wink

Not2bObvious · 05/01/2014 16:52

Ah crap, I think I have the a. version of Miso. Only thing is it don't cost lots. Doesn't matter, I have a feeling it'll never make it out of the press

TalkinPeace · 05/01/2014 16:57
Wink make it up half and half with version B OR use it to make cheap tinned vegetable soup taste of something OR use it as stock in a stir fry nothing wasted ....
BetsyBell · 05/01/2014 17:06

CJ - soup and or salmon/salad is a great fast day plan. A splash of milk is fine - just include the calories into your allowance (approx 15-20 cals). I'm not a fan of sweeteners (the sweetness tricks the body into expecting calories so can actually make you hungry) but do what you've got to do - maybe aim to reduce or give them up eventually…

(I'll always favour natural type foods over synthetic crap I'm afraid, not getting at you personally Grin )

Good luck with your first fast! They'll be lots of us doing the same tomorrow so I imagine this thread will be quite active then :)

BetsyBell · 05/01/2014 17:09

If you don't have miso (or decent miso!) to hand, hot water with half(? - maybe too much) a stock cube, bovril or a spoon of bouillon feels quite satisfying - like a cupasoup but without the calories or (fewer of the) crap ingredients.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 17:23

Not2bObvious - I think I am going to struggle since it is only 4hours in. Are we doing 24? Eek. DH has made the kids bacon sandwiches as I forgot about the soup I made. Feel a bit flat. Kids back to school this week. DH hardly seen each other today and have been a bit snappy together.

I did have roast chicken lunch and a mince pie but feel like crying as I am so annoyed with myself as I feel like I am battling food issues again as I have said I won't eat for 24 hours Confused.

BetsyBell · 05/01/2014 17:31

Toffee Settle back into it gradually - maybe 16 or 18 hours liquid only, or even a mini fast. It's not meant to be a punishment and if it's putting you in a bad frame of mind then that's not ok.

TalkinPeace · 05/01/2014 17:44

Am fasting for the first time since last term.
Had breakfast and lunch.
Now drinking water.
Nowt solid till tomorrow supper - just lots and lots of water and tea
Dreading the scales at the gym tomorrow. Feel bloated and lardy - entirely self inflicted.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 17:45

I did a fast on Thursday-Friday this week, 15 hours I think, and tbh I am not sure I expected to be fasting for 24 hours so soon! I feel my hormones are playing a part tbh. I am smack bang in the middle of my cycle and think that is playing a part. I want my lovely winter vegetable soup with 8 vegetables. I think the thought I can't eat is making me more upset that I can't work out if I am hungry or not Confused

MazzleDazzle · 05/01/2014 17:50

Your miso recipe sounds lovely Talkin will def. try it next.

FD for me today: 2 diet cokes, 2 coffees, 3 herbal teas & water. Not hungry, not thought of food...sailing through.

If I manage another 2 FD before Fri, I'll have done 9 in 3 weeks. Had all my measurements/body fat etc taken today. My block of 12 exercise classes, which are spread over 4 weeks, starts tomorrow.

Haven't had time to get caught up on all the thread - well done to those who are sticking with this! To those who are struggling - tomorrow is another day!

mummytowillow · 05/01/2014 18:10

Hi everyone

I've just read the DM insert on the '2 day' diet, it was the most confusing thing ever!

Is it actually based on the principles were all following or not?

I had KFC today, all within calories but I feel guilty as its just rubbish but yummy rubbish

TalkinPeace · 05/01/2014 18:17

mummytowillow
its the Daily Fail .... nuff said
ignore everything they say and listen to us as we are not over remunerated twonks

mummytowillow · 05/01/2014 18:20

As I thought a load of old crapola!

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 05/01/2014 18:22

Starting tomorrow! See you then! Smile

BetsyBell · 05/01/2014 18:53

Have a bowl of lovely nutritious winter soup toffs. Then fast till lunch tomorrow - easy Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 19:05

That won't be 24 hours though, BetsyBell and I promised Not2bObvious I would do it with her. I am passed the panicking bit now and think I have done nearly 6 hours Shock and will be going to bed in 3 hours so that will be 9 and when I get up around 7 I will be up to 18 and then I think I will be able to last until 1.15pm as I have to take DD and DS2 out at 10.30 and won't be back until 12. Sort out the kids then it will be almost the 24 hours. Hopefully.

Not2bObvious · 05/01/2014 19:07

Toffee don't stress yourself, you'd no need to fast today if you don't fancy it, enjoy your soup or anything you fancy. No reason to feel stressed or upset, I've has 4 days planning for this, so I was prepared. You know yourself that's the beauty of this WOL, you can always postpone til another day.
Just finished 1.5 hours of board games with the kids, just for distraction and also made them happy. Still stuffed anyway, my god what a binge I had, not sure if it's the best way but it's done now

Not2bObvious · 05/01/2014 19:12

Best of luck for new job Biscuit
Really envious of you runners at the min, haven't managed a run in over a week due to this manky cold thing. My system(ahem) is so bunged up, I think it misses exercise.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 19:19

I'm okay Not2bObvious. I want to give it a go. Is it a total no calories at all fast? I can't believe there are many calories in my veg soup as it is literally just corn oil to fry it off, Bouillon stock, parsley and the veg. I would rather carry on though than have to start again. I had intended to have some Kendal Mint Cake as a treat but didn't as wasn't hungry so at least I have gained that achievement!

Not2bObvious · 05/01/2014 19:23

I don't know Toffee, as I said earlier I had some recollection of someone saying under 50 cals but quite honestly I'm sure a cup of your soup wouldn't sink the boat - have it, it sounds lovely and if it gets you through the evening comfortable, then all the better. I'm just thirsty, thankfully! About 2 hours to bedtime

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 19:32

I am having trouble even drinking at the moment. I have barely had a beaker and a half today and I know that isn't enough. I just feel full. My stomach has definitely shrunk but since I had the flu I feel all full at times and it is really unpleasant.

I will see how I go but if I really struggle I will have some soup.

As a side issue, when I make the soup it doesn't go in the fridge and then by to days after it is fizzing. Am I meant to put it in the fridge when there is nothing but veg in it? The recipe book doesn't say.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2014 19:37

Zero Cals means fewer than 50 cals total in the fast period. This 50 figure is widely accepted, e.g. LeanGains, as being too low to raise insulin levels.
This means, for example:

  • For 16:8, you can have maximum 50 cals total in the 16 hr fasting period
  • For an optional zero-cal FD in 5:2, you have max 50 cals total during the entire FD.
BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2014 19:38

Zero-cal FDs are tough though, so don't do them unless your are healthy and prepared.

BetsyBell · 05/01/2014 19:40

Toffee Once it is cool it should be stored in the fridge. If it is fizzing then it is fermenting… not good.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/01/2014 19:45

It was definitely fermenting!! And it went in the bin

Goodness knows how I am going to get it in the fridge. I am okay now but should I have a small bowl full just in case?
