Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

BBC links on IF- these links are from someone doing 5 day fasts once a month:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25549805
www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25498742
www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25498743

The NHS site has updated its 5:2 article - it's still annoyingly says things like

"You are likely to be very hungry and have less energy and this could affect your ability to function (such as at work), in particular it may affect your ability to exercise which is an important part of maintaining a healthy weight."

but it is a vast improvement on the article there a year ago.

I'll put these on the Tips and Links thread too.

Abi01 · 04/01/2014 10:49

Thanks BetsyBell and BigChoc I will take a look at the Exercise thread.

3 FDs for this week done and dusted and just finished day 4 of shred. Hopefulgum think I'm going to copy you and break my fast with some yummy gluten free pancakes with lots of nutella

Have a lovely weekend everyone :)

MazzleDazzle · 04/01/2014 12:35

Thanks Betsy I'll check out those links.

Several NSVs to report today! NFD yesterday & today, but instead if feasting I didn't eat anything between 5.30pm and 10.30am - 17 hours. Skipped breakfast, went to the cinema this morning and only had a diet Pepsi and 3 flumps instead of the usual XL bucket of popcorn and family bag of Minstrels. Also I've stopped taking milk in my tea and coffee, something that only last week would have seemed impossible. I'm not missing it at all!

BetsyBell · 04/01/2014 13:23

Brilliant stuff mazzle Lifestyle change victories!

Soon you'll be like me & my DH and be really intolerant of people constantly snacking in cinemas/theatres/walking around, muttering 'why do people feel like they need to eat constantly'!

BetsyBell · 04/01/2014 13:24

(I used to think that a massive bag of Minstrels was an essential part of cinema-going Grin )

BsshBossh · 04/01/2014 13:30

Terrific LSV Mazzle, though I admit that I will often skip a meal just so I can devour cinema popcorn :)

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 04/01/2014 13:54

Well done Mazzle, sounds amazing for a none fast day.

Thanks for those links betsy really interesting.

Today is my second fast day. I've only had 132 cals so far but am about to have some porridge. Also I've cleaned half the house so feeling quite productive.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 04/01/2014 14:09

I agree with the cinema and eating, I find it hard to stay away from the ice cream at the cinema. It used to be a Wednesday treat years ago and now I associate the cinema with ice cream.

I just had the porridge and am still hungry, think I'll have a cup of tea instead.

ImABadGirl · 04/01/2014 14:57

Fast day for me today and I've just had a mushroom omelette, that I made with 2 egg whites and 1 whole egg and 100g of beans, I lasted 18 hours since 2030...my stomach has definitely shrunk as the omelette has really filled me up I have 250 cals for dinner which will be vegetable soup.

I have to really plan a fast day then I know what to look forward to, hope everyone's FD/NFD is going well.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 04/01/2014 15:16

Everyone is doing so well.

Hello all Smile.

NFD today. Went out without breakfast as I work up and could hear someone Wink in my head saying "you don't need breakfast" so I didn't have any and put the fruit teacakes that were tempting me in the freezer. Went out to do errands and had a couple of crackers and cheese while preparing lunch then a couple more, a piece of herring and onion 1 inch size and 2 small slices of ox tongue. I'm a Northener, me Grin. I also had 2 or 3 pieces of M&S bruschetta.

Just making Jamie Oliver's fish pie for us all to eat together and will also do peas and sprouts on the side. Veg wise there is carrots, celery and tomatoes in the pie. I plan to have some chocolate later.

I fell today. Still sore so not planning too much more housework.

Tomorrow I am making winter vegetable soup and fresh bread as per request of my 8 year old.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 04/01/2014 15:20

Bought the paper today and ridiculously annoyed about the "Diet 2 days a week, eat normally for 5" booklet they have. I feel protective about our WOE and it annoys me when it is talked about and they have got it wrong. Have to admit haven't looked properly at it yet so they may have it right. This morning there was something on the radio about a fast where the health benefits have been proven but I am sure it wasn't about the 5:2 as it seemed a one off now and then. I missed the beginning so I could have been wrong about that too.

.

ImABadGirl · 04/01/2014 15:28

toffee your winter veg soup sounds yummy, can I have your recipe, I need to start making my own soups :)

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 04/01/2014 15:44

imabadgirl great minds must think alike. I'm having mushroom omelette for my dinner later. Going to try and eat it as late as possible.

toffee I have to admit my impression of the 5:2 was to eat normally on the 5 normal days. Really glad I am on this thread or I think I would have royally cocked things up by now.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 04/01/2014 15:47

My cinema trips always include ice cream, those big bag of minstrels I would buy from the supermarket and eat at home. Not had any for months now. We only go to the cinema 3 or 4 times a year at most anyway so will probably still have my ice cream treat.

Normal Saturday anything goes day today, though I've not eaten much as I've just not been hungry. Had something at 11 ok so it was a cupcake so was very naughty now will wait until my tea.

Have also looked into swimming pools near me. As it's too wet to run I've decided to swim again. I really enjoy swimming.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 04/01/2014 16:12

I'm apparently having a mini-fast today, I've had no time to do more than grab a quick snack so far!

There is a Bar Burrito next to our cinema. I like a big bowl with the veg, loads of guacamole and spicy salsa. Mexican food is my favourite.

toffee you're doing well. I'm third-ing the request for the soup recipe. Sounds like my lunch tomorrow!

BsshBossh · 04/01/2014 16:15

Argh, so poorly these past two days. My body hasn't been craving its usual healthy fruit, veg and wholegrains but instead my menu has consisted of (yesterday) glass milk, 2 rose & violet cremes, 1 store-bought cheese straw, handful of Bombay mix, mint KitKat, packet of beef crisps and (today) 2 x Marmite on toast, handful Bombay mix, tube of Refreshers. Luckilly DH is forcing me to eat homemade crab cakes and salad tonight. Food cravings are so odd!

Not2bObvious · 04/01/2014 17:04

I second the feeling poorly Bssh I've been in bed most of the day, miserable cold in my case. Making s

Not2bObvious · 04/01/2014 17:15

As I was saying... Making some spicy thai bits to clear the sinuses. Having a 16:8 today mainly due to the fact it was pretty much lunchtime by the time I could get it together to feed us all! Kids were fed but me and dh just lay there sniffling and choking. I've felt a bit picky this afternoon but decided to get the head down and do food prep. I always find that works well for me, no desire to eat raw onion or chilli Grin We decided we weren't leaving the house today so if it ain't in the fridge/press we aren't having it! So that vastly reduces options for badness, there is a few treats but nothing too bad. Hoping to feel better in advance of my pre 24 hour Lof, Toffee I'm doing this from tomorrow, basically having my Sunday lunch and making it a good one with dessert, then that's it til Monday lunch and 500 then until Tuesday morning. Dh thinks it sounds v extreme but really it's only about 5 more hours fasting than I normally do. So if you fancy giving it a shot with me virtually I'd love the companyWink Going to do normal FD Thursday, nothing fancy lol!

MazzleDazzle · 04/01/2014 17:22

That sounds like what I used to have for breakfast bssh!

Toffee I second your irritation at the mis-selling of 5:2! It implies that you can scoff like a pig five days of the week if you starve for two.

Interestingly, my 2 DC often go long spells without food and aren't keen on breakfast, or if they have a big breakfast, they don't want lunch or tea. I would have been mortified sending them out in the morning without eating and we often battled about it. From now on, I'm not going to coax them into eating breakfast and so long as they are properly hydrated, I'm sure they'll be fine.

BTW does anyone know anything about fasting when pregnant? If I do have another, this time I'd really like to stay in control of my eating. I'm ashamed to say that I consumed so much fat and sugar during first two pregnancies!

Indian take away and a couple of bottles of beer to look forward to tonight, then FD tomorrow.

ImABadGirl · 04/01/2014 17:30

I have a colleague that is doing the 5:2 but moans like hell on his 'diet' days, then eats like a pig on his eat days, I did ask him the other day what was the point? He couldn't tell me, he is one of the ones that makes up for the diet days on eat days...bonkers Grin and yes he is still as fat as when he first started in November!

BigChocFrenzy · 04/01/2014 18:14

Mazzle Do not fast when pregnant, or do any other diet unless advised to do so by your doctor.
I have some scientific links about the effects of dieting on the baby, but I won't post them unless someone requests, because they are rather alarming.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/01/2014 18:15

Just cut out junk food and stick to TDEE (of your current weight) during pregnancy unless your doctor advises otherwise.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 04/01/2014 18:16

Winter Vegetable Soup.

Serves 8.

1 medium Savoy cabbage, quartered and cored.
30ml/2 tbsp. corn oil.
4 carrots, finely sliced.
2 celery stalks, finely sliced.
2 parsnips, diced.
1.5 litres/2 1/2 pints/6 1/4 cups of chicken stock
3 medium potatoes.
2 courgettes, sliced.
1 small red pepper, seeded and diced.
115 g/4oz/2 cups cauliflower florets.
2 tomatoes, seeded and diced.
2.5ml/1/2 tsp fresh thyme leaves or 1/4 tsp dried thyme.
30ml/2 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley.
salt and freshly ground pepper.

Note to self - when asking your 8 year old to write out the ingredients needed to make the soup you check it before you go as when you type it out for your internet friends you discover he only copied half the list.

Slice the cabbage quarters into thin strips across the leaves.

Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the cabbage, carrots, celery and parsnips and cook for 10-15 minutes over a medium heat, stirring frequently.

Stir the stock into the vegetables and bring to the boil, skimming off any foam that rises to the service.

Add the potatoes, courgettes, pepper, cauliflower and tomatoes with the herbs, and salt and pepper to taste. Bring back to the boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Serve hot.

Enjoy!

I have a soup book with over 200 soups in.

BetsyBell · 04/01/2014 18:20

Mazzle During my second pregnancy I craved only healthy foods - wonderful wholesome eating of home cooked loveliness. I didn't put on weight (aside from the huge baby and accompaniments of course!). Don't fast or diet in pregnancy but aim to eat healthily as much as possible.

(first pregnancy was a very different story!)

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 04/01/2014 18:20

Bssh - I hope you feel better soon. I totally sympathise with having lovely food in and not wanting to eat it.

Not2bObvious - same get well wishes to you too. I am in for a fast tomorrow though I will miss my lovely soup as I had planned to have it tomorrow evening.
