The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

It wasn't too bad Toffee but I reckon I could only do lunchtime to lunchtime, I might try again starting Sunday. No breakfast and then a spectacular lunch with dessert, under tdee but only just I'm planningWink Then nothing but fluids til lunch on Monday, and 500 over 2 meals, breakfast in Tuesday to start nfd.
Quite excited about the yummy lunch, thinking fillet steak, creamy potatoes, cauliflower cheese, drool!
Totally enjoying my solitude, will start cooking my supper soon...ah peace & quiet

BetsyBell · 03/01/2014 18:56

I have mostly failed at my self-imposed no grains, no junk effort today. Maybe when we're back at work/school it'll be easier…

I like your thinking bigchoc. It's a hard scenario to imagine but I'm guessing if I were on my own with no kids I'd either become an uber-gym bunny like you or I'd be slobbing out even more than I do now [mad cat lady face]. Luckily I have 3 dependants (DH included Wink ) so not likely to happen any time soon.

I'm working on becoming the fit type of person though. Thinking about it really hard while I drink prosecco..!

It is doable though, in many ways I'm a whole different person these days than I once was so changes do happen. Taekwondo starts on Tuesday [excited face].

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/01/2014 19:09

Betsy Great you have an about starting taekwondo ; you are motivated to do well !
It may incorporate Fartlek too. Anyway, a great fullbody cardiovascular workout !

Abi01, Mazzle, anyone starting exercise:
I recently posted FD Eating, Shakes & Training on the exercise thread.

Mazzle I think you mentioned monitoring Body Fat ?
Yes, it is the most important health parameter for most of us.
Keeping track of waist size will do this, or use the BF calculator link in the OP.

Betsy I think it's best to get back into the swing with 5:2 before trying to go super-healthy as well.Obviously try to cut down junk and alcohol, but whole-grains are healthy in reasonable amounts for most people.

Experts like Walter Willets (Framingham Study) and Varady keep emphasizing it really is just the calories:

Unless one has a particular allergy or intolerance, the precise type of food - low / high fat / carb, Paleo, veggy, vegan - and even how clean you eat, doesn't matter for weight loss.

The healthiest diet depends on the individual, but healthy weight - and exercise ! - are more important.

Totally agree. I was really hungry today bigchoc, I just did what I had to do. [wipes chocolate off lips]

I did an excellent fast day yesterday though, so happy with that.

AGlassHalfEmptyNoLonger · 03/01/2014 19:43

Kitchen closed after my first FD. Still the evening to get through, but about to watch Elf with my ds, then will be bedtime story for him, and I'll curl up in bed with my Kindle after that, so hopefully I can stick to liquid for the rest of the time.

Had 50g smoked salmon for breakfast, home made chunky tomato soup for lunch (2 tinned chopped tomatoes, reduced down with a few flavourings), and 3 scrambled eggs with a smidge of milk for tea. Have drunk fizzy flavoured water al day (don't like plain water, and dont really drink hot drinks either), Have come in at about 550 cals, so am really happy with that.

Must say though, my biggest NSV today wasnt the 550 cals, or not partaking of the chocolates at the staff meeting this morning. Nope, it was resisting the temptation of the cold onion rings my ds didn't eat with his tea. As I am recently, unhappily, intolerant to the allium family, was a big NSV of many sorts Grin

I hope everybody else was successful today, roll on 2 NFD's now, before the next one.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/01/2014 20:07

Well done on an excellent 1st FD, Glass !

OP posts:
MazzleDazzle · 03/01/2014 20:43

Well done glass!

A NFD for me today. 1800 cals with no snacking. Was, at times, as hard as a FD. Going to the cinema tomorrow and visiting friends, so will enjoy some treats. The thought kept me going throughout today.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 03/01/2014 20:52

Not2BeObvious - next time you do one give me a shout and we can support each other if you like.

ImABadGirl · 03/01/2014 22:08

NFD for me today and I had 1808 calories, I had nearly 300 calories worth of chocolate, will this affect my weight loss? I'm doing ADF and have stuck religiously to 500 or under on the 3 FD so far.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/01/2014 23:15

Ima For weight loss, all nutrition experts agree it is basically just total calories, not whether they come from choc or veg .
Smile
It is good to have treats (within reason) on NFD, because this is part of what makes it a sustainable WOE.
Enjoy !

OP posts:
ImABadGirl · 03/01/2014 23:31

Thanks for that bigchoc, I have calculated my calorie intake for this week and it comes to 6890 so going on my TDEE of 1995, my calorie deficit is 7075 so that should equal 2 lbs loss

or am I over thinking this massively??

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/01/2014 23:47

Ima That is the theory, but your particular body may lose more slowly (e.g.if you are starting from a healthy BMI), or more quickly.

BTW: If you find ADF a strain, especially after a few weeks, then try changing one of your FDs to a mini-FD, or moving to 5:2.
Different IF suits different individuals.

ImABadGirl · 03/01/2014 23:54

my starting BMI is 28 so not too bad, I weigh 76kg and aim to get to 56kg, I know it's doable on this woe just have to get used to it

These threads are fab Grin

ImABadGirl · 03/01/2014 23:57

I've exercised every day so far, today I walked 5 miles at a quite fast pace, my head is in the right place at last!

hopefulgum · 04/01/2014 00:07

Yes, Bigchoc, the fact that we can eat treats on NFD's makes this the easiest WOE I think.

Otherwise it is easy to feel deprived and tell ourselves that no diet is worth giving up our favourite things. The great thing about 5:2 is that it also teaches you what provides the most calories, and what doesn't: vegies. I think the 5:2 encourages more vegetable eating as they are the lowest calories, and eating loads of vege is great for the body.

Yesterday was a NFD and I was under TDEE. That was a bit of a surprise to me, but I think it helped that I didn't feel like breakfast, which meant I'd saved a lot of calories. Is it important to meet TDEE on NFD's? I don't ant my body to feel it is going into starvation, which will in turn stall weight loss.

This morning is a whole different scene: Gluten free pancakes with butter, maple syrup and mascarponeShock Oh yeah, I feel satisfied! Glad I am going to swim laps today!

Betsy, I have issues with wheat (and other gluten too), but funnily enough was able to tolerate it while pregnant. I would get up in the middle of the night to have a white bread peanut butter sandwich ( coincidentally my DS's favourite food!). But when I am not pregnant, gluten will make me look pregnant and I have awful bloating and discomfort, which usually ends with awful cramps and diarreah. It isn't pleasant and it means passing up all cakes, biscuits and breads made with gluten is actually easy.

My next fast day is Monday. I feel ready with the carrot and coriander soup in the freezer, and some seafood for a light dinner. Yum!

hopefulgum · 04/01/2014 00:12

ImaBadGirl, I am almost the same weight and have a similar goal to you, though I am hoping to get to 60kgs first. I'd love to be 56kgs, but it just seems so far off...

My friend who inspired me to go 5:2 started last February, but was definitely not overweight, I think she was about 63kgs, and by the end of the year, just before Christmas she weighed in at 55kgs. She felt she hadn't even tried to lose weight, for her it was about the health benefits. However, as I have a lot more weight to lose, I think that maybe I could still have a similar, if not better loss over a year of 5:2 ing.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 04/01/2014 01:04

Hopeful

Many 5:2ers eat about 10% under TDEE for 2-3 NFDs, to save calories for the weekend; again, this helps makes the WOL sustainable.

Aim for the weekly total of your NFD calories, because IF needs a big contrast between FD and NFD.

Example for TDEE 2000:

  • 2 x 500 FDs
  • 3 x 1800 NFDs (so saving 600 cals for the weekend)
  • 2 x 2300 NFDs (weekend)

My bedtime now. Enjoy your evening.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 04/01/2014 01:23

NFD here today. We had a big group of friends round for dinner, so I was super sensible and had salad for lunch. Then pizza for dinner (I used chickpea flour for the base of mine) with lots more salad.

Really busy day tomorrow, I might fast just so I have one less thing to fit in!

hopefulgum · 04/01/2014 06:14

Oh thanks Bigchoc, I like the sound of that. Especially as I went out for lunch and ate a big pile of lovely, lovely hot chips!

I am guessing I will easily go over 1700 calories today, but that seems to be fine as it is the weekend and I've been good all week. 1700 is less than my TDEE(ideal weight) which is much closer to 1800. My actual TDEE for the weight I am now is about 2000, but I am sure I read I should use the TDEE of my ideal weight?

hopefulgum · 04/01/2014 06:36

Thanks, Bigchoc, I will try to work out my NFD's TDEE now.

Greenkit · 04/01/2014 07:42

EarSlapsTue 31-Dec-13 06:22:51

Greenkit- did you drink lots and lots of water? Normally we get most of the water we need from our food, so if you're not eating as much you need to make sure you drink more. Also, some people find they need something salty on fast days- a drink of hot bovril if you're struggling is really good. I don't normally like things salty but on fast days I crave salt.

ELRTue 31-Dec-13 07:23:08

greenkit I suffer from migraine so ensure that I drink plenty on fast days and as earslaps says something salty, I have a cup of veg bouillon. Also if you normally drink tea or coffee keep that up too as it could caffeine withdrawal.
If fasting on waking I have a large glass of water followed about half an hour later with a cup if tea, I then have another tea mid morning then a large glass of water and a small lunch as I split my calories, then a tea. I have another large glass of water around 3pm then around 4.30ish I have a cup of hot bouillon. Then dinner around 6/7 and a tea around 8pm then before bed a small glass of water.

Thank you for this, I will try and add more water

BetsyBell · 04/01/2014 08:46

Hmm, had an unexpected cheese fest last night - decided that the snacking was equivalent to 2 meals so I'm going to fast until this evening.

I've just read an interesting new article on the bbc on IF, mainly based on Longo's research re. IGF levels. I'll pop a link to it when I'm on a more suitable device.

BetsyBell · 04/01/2014 09:00

Ooh, just did a weigh in (out of interest) and despite my massive cheese fest (and cake Blush ) I am only a few ounces up on yesterday. I guess the 5 mile walk really did the trick.

There's something in this exercise lark isn't there Grin

Still doing a mini fast today though.

The weather is filthy here, not sure if another big walk will be possible desirable today.
