Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I knew I'd read the 50cals thing here somewhere, thank you BigChoc!

Apart from the oven chip earlier, I'm still on track for 36hrs LOF. Am hungry now, but will have more water and have to get up at 3 for a wee and look forward to a real breakfast in the morning

MrsFlorrick · 05/12/2013 21:58

Rubbishfamily. I have been doing Jillian Michaels workouts. But I was doing the same amount of exercise through out 5:2 and I was doing JM from April this year.

Working out obv helps firm things up but not necessarily what helps me lose weight or drop dress sizes.

Talkinpeace · 05/12/2013 22:06

Toned muscle is definitely "narrower" than untoned.
Was waiting to check the gym scales today and a newcomer was on them. Se was noticably bigger than me but only weighed a few pounds more ...
abs of concrete are definitely smaller than the wobblier variety Grin

Not2bObvious · 05/12/2013 22:23

Tried posting this earlier - stupid wifi
Just spent an enjoyable 20 mins reading through the thread, my you lot have been busy , I was page 3 this morning (oh er Matron, my first/last time as a page 3 girlXmas Wink)
Cause it's hard to scroll up/down, going to work from memory and try get initial if not name! P lady in Asia, loved reading your story, get so encouraged when of hear long haulers still at the WOL and suceeding.
Dotty v sorry on the money issue, at least you're not flushing ££'s down the drain on a slimming club! And super well done on dealing with anger with aqua therapy. You just dealt with a major opp to self sabotage and you drowned it!
Sweetie pet, I hear you, I know people say losing weight won't make you happy and I know it's true but like you when I feel in control of my weight, I just feel more in control. I did gently try to question on the last thread were you a little early after baba to do this, ultimately it's your choice but please remember this is a tough time for you body/head wise and pnd or no pnd, there'll always be a lot of emotions/hormones flying about. Put the scales away, pick something a little snug and use that as your measure if you really want to keep at it. I'd give anything to be where you are now with the presence of mind to know, this is such a small window of time with baby, and to relish it. I saw a little one about your baby's age yesterday and I wanted to scoop it up and nibble it's cheeks. Ahem, best make sure I keep taking my pill, think mother natures on the prowl Xmas Grin

MrsFlorrick · 05/12/2013 22:24

Tip GrinGrin

Sadly I don't have abs of concrete. Working on it though.

annielewis · 05/12/2013 22:47

Hi everyone - possible TMI alert.....just wondering if any of you have found that you have had weird monthly periods since you started this WOE?

BsshBossh · 05/12/2013 22:54

I know my 36 hours won't be over until 10am tomorrow but as I'm now retiring to bed to watch the amazing Mandela tributes sleep I doubt I'll be eating. So let me declare my first 36 hour LOF since May an outright success - only herb tea, black coffee and water passed my lips. G'night all.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 05/12/2013 22:55

Tip In case your overweight sparring partner claims it is healthier to be slightly overweight ( I know you like boxing her ears)
Xmas Grin
I remembered this interesting article in Nature analysing the apparent paradox of slightly overweight people living longer than those within recommended BMI range. It analyses why and has this very informative curve of age and best BMI:
www.nature.com/news/the-big-fat-truth-1.13039#/obesity

Young adults should aim more for lower BMI, maybe because weight usually increases with age not with 5:2.
In contrast, middle-aged and elderly might be better off slightly above BMI 25, but not obese.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 05/12/2013 22:59

Dotty Shame you didn't receive your regrading. Never good to hear one's income will drop, especially at this time of year
Xmas Sad ((Dotty))

Well done for not Frenzying. At least 5:2 generally lowers food & drink bills.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 05/12/2013 23:11

BreadandWine If you are doing a vegan lurk:

Amazon just delivered my Ezekiel sprouted fettucine, which their blurb says is a mix of 6 sprouted grains & legumes, producing a complete protein with similar levels of protein to eggs and milk.

Important for a lazy, dangerous hungry cook like me, it only takes 4½ mins to cook.

I also recvd Annie Chun's ready meal of sprouted brown sticky rice.

I'll try one or both at the weekend, plus your vegan choc muffin in a mug.

My life is really sprouting at the moment.
Xmas Smile

ChocolatePudding · 05/12/2013 23:22

Hi everyone. Been so busy that I've not been able to keep up with you all. Can't believe you are on page 7 of new thread already. I think I left you in the early 30s of last thread!

Well I've had a mamouth catch up on all your chatter. Like many of you the bugs have been circling our household. A treatment of antibiotics seems to be recovering my energy levels and chest pains have gone which is such a relief as I feared it was the 5:2 making me feel lethargic and tetchy.

I haven't worked out how to name change correctly. I like the idea of a festive name change and I do so enjoy a pudding or two or three of most sorts (usually chocolate variety but had to develop a taste for non chocolate puds the year I gave up chocolate and succeeded for 10 whole months!!) so will have a go at it later.

Well done on all those fab NSVs and SVs. Very motivating for others to see this WOE working.

My stats as per Bssh request:

Height 5ft 8
SW 161lb (highest ever non preg weight and just inside norm BMI)
CW 147lb
GW 139lb

So excited to be back to 10st 7. I was here sometime before the summer holidays but then like others I really struggled over the holidays and didn't manage a single fast. I also lost track of these threads back then and that was probably what killed my motivation. Hence the importance of me catching up with you lot again even though I've not been able to keep up well over the last few weeks. It's great you r all still here for me to tap into.

Did my first LOF on tues and found it easier than expected. Aim to do 2 mini fast this week on Fri and Sat instead of doing another full FD. It seemed to work well for me last week and I'm used to avoiding food all day. Makes my life much simpler as not constantly cooking and having to clean up again. Kitchen is so much cleaner and tidier on days kids are in school (another NSV?)

Time to catch up on my beauty sleep.

Papayasoup · 05/12/2013 23:44

rubbish I know it is hard but keep at it and the weight will come off. There are weeks like that and then the next you see a loss

dotty what a NSV!

Well done on all the LOFers, you guys have done great!

annie I've actually found the opposite but I am borderline PCOS and as I try to eat lower GI it helps me be a lot more regular. This is actually one of the improvements I've really noticed this year.

bigchoc am intruiged about the sprouted bread but don't think I've ever seen them here. Will need to look out for them

I weighed in this morning at 57kg which is my lowest ever, and I mean ever. I had a good look in the mirror and I feel slim and definitely not gaunt (DH agrees) but toning is required as I still have a bit of a tum and my backside could do with a lift. That'll continue to be my focus into next year and continuing with fasting of course! I tried to find the tape measure but of course couldn't but it was 6am so probably not at my most focused.

And now I am focusing on the start of my NFD. Supposed to have lunch with a friend and no doubt something naughty tonight!

Happy Friday!

peplum41 · 06/12/2013 00:57

Hi
Just wanted to say hi to papaya and hardtitch . Can't believe how long you've been lurking pap.

annielewis yeah my periods seem more frequent past 8 weeks I've had 3 periods, and judging by spot on chin another is looming. Keeping an eye for now. What's to do with yours?

Comiz dotty. Hope it didn't ruin your evening resolve.

bennettgirl you probs just know me from here. Sadly not a c25ker yet but that could be a ny resolution. What was your name beforehand? I never did get to the bottom of that.

somewhere the tens are so close for me too! Plus I'm flopping about in size 16 rather than looking too big for 14. At least it keeps me out of the clothes shops.

Fast day Fri, plus minifast Sat, but followed by a meal at friends so not punitive.

Have a great weekend y'all. X

ChristmasPudding6 · 06/12/2013 01:43

Thanks BCF. All sorted. Just trying to get back to sleep after massive overhaul of DS1's bed sheets, duvet, pillow and carpets. Yes that's right. Another one with the sickness bug.

ChristmasPudding6 · 06/12/2013 01:52

Rushed off then to another round of vomiting. This is going to be long night. And thanks for the welcome back.

Tomorrow will be a FD for me. Good job as will have nostrils full of sick which is enough to put anyone off food. Apologies to anyone eating breakfast whilst reading this!

Not2bObvious · 06/12/2013 06:11

Good girl Sweetie, hope you had a lovely night and really enjoyed it.
Well despite my great intentions, I reckon I knocked up 3000 cals yesterday - just a little reminder of how easily it can be done when faced with too much food and a non mindful state! My saving grace was I snuck off to bed after 2 glasses of wine so no excessive alcohol cals not any hangover. Would love some sort of workout but not sure if the gear I have with me could be adapted to wear in the gym. Failing that I could attempt a brisk walk aftr breakfast, if I chose the have breakfast that is.
Bssh it was only late last night I heard about Mandela, so weird when you're in a bubble environment(locked in a meeting room) and history is happening outside your door, rest his soul.

Not2bObvious · 06/12/2013 06:18

ChristmasPud my heart goes out to you! I really hope you got a few hours after the last clean up on aisle 6Xmas Sad
Had it in my house 2 weeks ago, some comfort was it did only go 24 hours for my pair, they tag teamed it which was strangely helpful! You'll have to do better to put me off my brekkie.
Mindful considered and careful eating for today. Mfp recalculated my goals, which is exciting, never did that before so I'm down 70 cals a day since I input my latest lowest weight. So I will enjoy my food but I'm not eating to excess. Wish me luck!

dingdongduckyfuzz · 06/12/2013 06:24

Oh my goodness how quickly this thread moves! Hoping to be off work this morning due to the place I'm meant to be at being evacuated yesterday as a result of coastal surge... Fingers crossed!

NFD yesterday and out for supper with friends, ate just what I wanted and came in under 2000 cals for the day (having saved my cals for the meal!)

Now will catch up with you lot...

Baloostika · 06/12/2013 07:06

Good morning all.
Just a few hours to the end of our 36 hrs LOF.
Had 2 black coffee, a little milk, a mug of tea and plenty of water.
Bssh, Toffee and other LOFers, how are u guys keeping up?
Have a wonderful weekend y'all.

peplum41 · 06/12/2013 07:20

Well done baloo, what you going to have for Brekkie?

Oh dear xmaspud6 , sounds like you will be fasting the hard way this weekend if that bug is catching.

BsshBossh · 06/12/2013 07:22

Friday weigh-in today and 1.4 lbs down (pleasantly surprised by this as it's TOM week for me). I'm officially in the 120s (just... 129.8 lbs!).

Still 3 hours to go until my 36 hour LOF is over but no food has passed my lips.

minifingers · 06/12/2013 07:44

Can someone talk to me about what happens period wise in relation to fasting? My periods are usually 3 days like Niagara Falls followed by 3 lighter days, leaving me pale and wan. I want to continue to fast throughout (2 fast days) but I'm wondering if it's wise?
