The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

hi All,
Just a quick update .I've been so busy lately I've not been keeping up to date with everyone on here- When I first started 5:2 I was reading the thread religiously every day ! I've had a lot of social stuff going on- weekend break for MIL 70th, awards ceremony in London , and just this weekend gone on a fabulous weekend in Venice to celebrate my BIG birthday .
Needless to say there's been lots of lovely food and wine going on.But also stuck with 5:2 all the way varying the FDs to fit in with it all.
Before I went to Venice my WI was 9 st 12. it's a FD today and I'll have my next WI on Friday..hopefully will be the same weight.I really don't expect a loss with the amount of fizz I've been putting away! ( hard to resist when your hotel provides complimentary prosecco every afternoon ).
this weekend another party at my house to celebrate ...
Anyway hello to all my 'old' fasting buddies dotty bssh TIP and welcome to all the newer people I've missed over the last few weeks.I hope you're all loving 5:2 as much as I am. Good luck today's fasters

Peanate · 18/11/2013 08:31

Hi everyone, hope you don't mind a lurker dropping in to say hi.

I've been thinking about doing 5:2 for ages, and finally completed my first fast day today - yippy! I found it surprisingly easy, which I wasn't really expecting. Helped that I was pretty busy at work which kept my mind off things.

My menu for the day was:
Espresso with a splash of milk (instead of my usual latte)
2 inch piece of telegraph cucumber mid morning
Lunch was 2x corn thins with a small tin of salmon and a tomato
Afternoon tea was carrot sticks and another corn thin
Dinner was 200g steamed mashed pumpkin, with 75g chicken and lots of veg eg spinach, courgette, capsicum, garlic, ginger, stir fried together with a bit of tomato purée. Was delicious and really filling!

So normal day tomorrow, then I'll fast again on Wednesday. The next couple of weeks will be tricky as I have the in laws visiting which normally means lots of eating and drinking out (they are foodies, and wine consumption is also essential when the in laws descend on you!!)

So onwards!!

eatriskier · 18/11/2013 08:38

My lovely DH picked me up a new small set of thermals at the weekend. I've been out to drop DD off at nursery and didn't feel the cold. Am hoping they still stay good for the FD chills later.

rubbishfamily333 · 18/11/2013 09:07

Oh no after eating all weekend I am 10.6 this morning Hmm

But fd today so tomorrow should be better Grin

Signing in for FD

Dotty342kids · 18/11/2013 09:11

hitc you're under 10st Shock Grin, that's amazing, well done!!! Oh, am so envious as am still loitering around the 10st 5-7 range.
Congrats on your birthday and all your celebrations sound amazing. How fantastic to be looking and feeling good for it Smile

Fast day for me today and there's a veggie chilli all prepped, in the saucepan and ready for me to cook later. Easiest thing in the world to make, chock full of nice veggies and with a small portion of brown rice should nicely be within 500 cals.
Hosting my monthly book group tonight so will have to stick to water whilst serving up wine / soft drinks / nibbles for everyone else but have done it before and can do it again!

BetsyBell · 18/11/2013 09:24

Sweetiepie that looks good, maybe have another boiled egg on standby that you can tuck into if you need it. Your body has a lot to do at the moment! Good to see your DH is looking after you, hope all is well with you and the little ones :)

PPC FABULOUS photos, you look incredible and great to hear on the the Inspiration thread that you feel equally amazing too.

Peanate Hi! Sounds like you've got into the swing of it :)

rubbish And that's why I never weigh on a Monday - I know I'm never going to like what I see after a weekend!

Hello to everyone - I'm on a much needed fast day after a jolly indulgent Sunday. Stopped eating by 4pm yesterday which gives me a good head start on getting in fasting hours! I'll do a tiny salad at lunch then I've got some leftover veg curry for the evening which I might have with some roasted butternut squash.

xCupidStuntx · 18/11/2013 09:26

Morning everyone!!

Fast day here too because I foolishly made bad choices last night so ended up having 1500cals in total so not too bad for a non fast day and I'd rather keep Mondays fast days.

Well done on your first fast pea
I'm definitely going to get plenty of protein into my day as it keeps me more full.

During my little ramble around town, I didn't even bother looking in clothes shops (which is unheard of for me) and it's because I actually know that I'm going to do this so buying clothes in my current size would be a waste of money Grin

MrsFlorrick · 18/11/2013 09:32

Well being stuck alone home with chicken poxy DC and a weekend of pure scoffing has taken its toll. I am 5lbs up!!! ShockSad

So FD today. Kiss of death now that I have posted it on here Wink

5 bloody lbs up!!! Ugh feel fat. In fact I now am fat again.

DD not quite well enough for school. Perhaps tomorrow. Don't think DS will be going to preschool this week. Sad

H had the absolute cheek to have the hump about looking after the DC Saturday morning for my lie in. His idea of giving me an outing alone was to send me to Waitrose.
In the end I had to take DD because he "just couldn't cope" with her/both of them at once.

Yesterday I tried to stay in bed to get a little time on my own. H just screamed and shouted at DC and made them cry. I couldn't listen to it so I got up. He was basically being cruel to DC to make me get up and look after them. I think I hate him now. How could he.

And he then didn't speak to me for the rest of the day. AngryAngryAngry

I want to tell him to go but there are lots of boring practical reasons that I can't so for now I am stuck with him. I thought we were getting things sorted but apparently I failed to see that he was a complete c£&@ when I married him! Angry What was I thinking. Sad

This is the point where I am liable to just eat and eat and put several stone on so please please please help me get through this fD and another this week so that I don't end up like last year. Sad

Thanks for reading Thanks

xCupidStuntx · 18/11/2013 09:59

Oh MrsF you poor thing!!
Please don't let the situation make you overeat, you'll feel so much worse afterwards. My God does he realise how he's making you feel?
Would you consider asking him to leave, if even just to give him a swift kick up the arse? That's disgraceful!!

BsshBossh · 18/11/2013 10:05

MrsF your H is making you feel Sad and Angry - that's bad enough - but don't let putting on weight again make you even more Sad and Angry. Make your weight the thing that, right now, makes you feel Smile about yourself and your life. Don't give in to piling the lbs back on!

By the way, those 5 lbs are just water/salt weight, not actual fat - it's too soon for that. Run around after your DC, fast diligently, eat healthily but moderately on non-fast days and those lbs will shift again. I promise.

Welcome pea.

FD for me today too.

BsshBossh · 18/11/2013 10:07

Fantastic work sticking to 5:2 throughout all those celebrations, ceremonies and holidays. I wish we had a [trophy] emoticon.

MrsFlorrick · 18/11/2013 10:11

Cupid. I don't think he does. He certainly doesn't care.

I can't ask him to leave just now. I need to sort some things out first. It's about money and a very long tedious story. I don't have access to any money just now as I don't work and I am reliant on what he chooses to give to me. So I need to sort that out/get a job before I can ask him to go. It could be some time sadly.

He has just phoned from work to complain that DD got up to wee at 5am and he couldn't go back to sleep! DD didn't deliberately wake us. She went to wee on her own and went back to bed without saying a word. I heard her too as you do when your DC get up in the night! Anyway he gripe is that she woke him and he couldn't go back to sleep. Hmm Oh and it was too hot upstairs this morning. Ffs he set the upstairs thermostat last night so own fault. Hmm

I could just go for the biscuits right now Confused

Please stop me!

BsshBossh · 18/11/2013 10:17

Nice observation made by DH over the weekend. On Saturday we were in town. We'd already skipped breakfast at home knowing we were going to have a big burger & fries lunch later, but as we walked through Kings Cross we spotted (and smelled!) a lovely-looking artisan bakery. We paused and DH said, "Shall we pop in?" I said, "You can but I want to save my appetite for lunch." To which DH said, "Me too!" Then he marvelled at how, before discovering intermittent fasting, we'd both have thought nothing of having breakfast at home, then a mid-morning treat at a bakery, then lunch. "Fasting's taught me what real physical hunger feels like," he said, "and this is just mental hunger."

BetsyBell · 18/11/2013 10:18

MrsF Don't eat just to spite him, pointless and painful. Take control of yourself by fasting really bloody well today, which is step one to taking control of your life.

Ugh, I am so Angry Angry on your behalf. What an absolute bell end he is.

Oh, and start spending an awful lot of his money Grin. Maybe start by joining a gym with a fabulous creche and then boxercise the hell out of everything.

Don't touch the effing biscuits though, they will make you feel even more crap than you already do

((((((MrsFlorick))))))

BeCoolFucker · 18/11/2013 10:20

MrsF I am on FD too. We can do it!!!

It was DD's birthday on Saturday - I've lived on cake and fish and chips and Chinese food etc all weekend.

I separated from humpy/negative/moody/entitled XP a while back now so although I'm knackered from doing everything all weekend, I'm feeling great in myself. For years he would get all angry/humpy/whatever in the run up to any lovely family celebration - birthdays/Xmas etc. He was over on Saturday but is now always on very best behaviour so OK to be around from time to time. But what you describe is a reminder of just how much an overly entitled moody P can crap all over everyone's weekend with their selfish self obsessed behaviour. Sometimes I do miss him, but it is a huge relief from us all to be free of his arsey moods which were always inflicted on us all - I understand how you feel MrsF.

Please try and focus on NOT turning this on yourself. Rant away here! Chew on something crunchy and loud perhaps? Carrot sticks? celery? Rise above it it.

I chose not to weigh myself this am - going to do that monthly to avoid the emotional roller coaster it can be.

So fasting with MrsFlorick - lets go!

BsshBossh · 18/11/2013 10:22

MrsF I know it's hard but eating biscuits (or whatever) will make you feel bad, not him. Eating is something you can control right now so stick to fasting today. Big hugs to you!

BeCoolFucker · 18/11/2013 10:26

MrsF I've learnt enough from the Relationships thread to know your H knows exactly how it makes you feel and is in fact designed to ruin your day/weekend/lie in whatever. Being cruel to the children to get to you is really really nasty contrived behaviour.

MrsFlorrick · 18/11/2013 10:34

Bssh. Thanks Thanks

Becool. Yes. I am starting to realise all this. I just want to kick him in the nads really. Being nasty to a 4yo and a 2 yo because you want your own way and can't be arsed to do something, is as low as it can go. It has completely changed the way I view him.

Can't believe I didn't see this before and that I married him in the first place!!! Wtaf was I thinking??!!!

The massive irony is that he wanted DC badly and I didn't. Turns out he wanted a wife to wait on him and do all his chores and some DC as long as he didn't actually have anything to do with them. Sad

I am a fool. And I was completely taken in by him. Sad

I've resisted biscuits and am having a cup a soup (48cals) to see me through the morning.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 18/11/2013 10:39

Sorry to hear about the hard time MrsF

Well done on resisting the biscuits. You will only regret eating them.

eatriskier · 18/11/2013 10:47

((((((mrsf)))))) Don't eat to spite him. Like Bssh says take the control you can do right now. Have you genuinely nowhere you could escape to? Even if its just off for some time to get away from him, sort your head out and make a plan of attack for whatever you choose to do?
