The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

And my big question - what are you doing with your "fat" clothes. I have had a bit of a shopping spree this week and can't believe how much I love myself now I am in clothes that I like & which fit (pre-DC, I used to wear quite fitted clothes so have hated wearing sack or tent like things for the past few years) but don't know what to so with my old clothes. I think it's a bit risky to charity shop them all immediately so think I'll put them in the loft for twelve months. I am hoping that, by this time next year, I'll be another stone lighter and will have maintained that weight for 6 months so can then charity shop those clothes.
I have some clear evidence of vanity sizing now. The size 12 jeans I bought in M&S last week are bigger than the size 14s I bought in there 10yrs ago. I remember buying those jeans as it was the first time I had strayed into size 14 territory, but by no means the last! I think vanity sizing was one of the reasons I was able to kid myself about my weight for so long as I was never more than a size 16 and that didn't seem that bad.

Southeastdweller · 17/11/2013 09:21

Morning all, catching up now.

cuckoo You're such a positive poster and I personally get a lot of strength from you, and thanks for your kind words about me on the last thread. Wishing you lots of luck on your next chapter.

Bssh I've been thinking a lot about that sour cherry bread you had the other day Grin. I'm going to Gail's Bakery in the week to stock up. How were the burgers you had yesterday in town?

covered I gave all mine to charity shops. I'm not going back to that size again ever.

All the recent sugar talk reminds me I must watch that Lustig video soon, probably today but after I've tried the new Lindt Strawberry Intense chocolate...

mollysfolly · 17/11/2013 09:25

Morning Everyone! I'm delurking after a couple of months as I can't resist commenting on emmabryant's drink of choice - 'JD and come' (Sat 19:28). When the Baileys bottle beckons I'll remember this one Wink

Good luck to all Sunday fasters - I actually managed this last week so I know it's possible..

Thanks to all going through a rough time at the moment

xCupidStuntx · 17/11/2013 10:01

Morning everyone!

I decided not to track calories yesterday, and didn't even binge in the true sense of the word, yet I still managed to clock up over 4000cals!!
I don't feel guilty, I've just had a light bulb moment, quite honestly I would have described my eating yesterday as not great. I wouldn't have thought it was so many calories, not in a million years! Had I been tracking through the day I'd have made a few changes along the way and swapped unnecessarily high calorie things for lighting things.

I'm learning though and still completely motivated to keep going!

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend, I'm going for a ramble around town today totally on my own without my little shadow (DD- 2) can't wait to rifle through bookshops and go for a nice coffee, it's been an age!!

duckyfuzz · 17/11/2013 10:13

Morning all. Pathetic, exhausted wave at everyone - I have run, again Shock but won't be able to tomorrow or tues so needed to really. Aiming for TDEE today, then I have work with lunch provided mon/tues so will have to plan around that...

duckyfuzz · 17/11/2013 10:14

Cupid that sounds like a lovely afternoon, enjoy!

xCupidStuntx · 17/11/2013 10:17

Oh I will ducky thanks Smile
I really need to start doing some form of exercise myself, even just for the feel good factor!

BsshBossh · 17/11/2013 10:39

Southeast Meat Shack (and Meat Liquor) burgers are my favourite. Highly recommend both. I tend to order the Dead Hippie burger, jalapeno poppers and fries. They also do hot dogs but I've not tried these yet. Shack is bright and airy, above Jubilee Market and Liquor is dark and gothic, near Marylebone. Enjoy!

BsshBossh · 17/11/2013 10:59

Covered I went cold turkey and donated all my big clothes. There's no way I'm going to wear those sizes again (they range from 14 to 20). Good riddance to them. Also, my style has changed a bit - I no longer want to wear baggy clothes to cover my bum; it's cropped, fitted clothes all the way now.

DH and I spent a lovely, child-free time shopping on Lambs Conduit Street yesterday - some really nice independent boutiques there eg Folk and Oliver Spencer and it was such a wonerful feeling being able to buy off the rack (sizes 8 and 10, incidentally) and knowing everything would fit me. On Friday I got my hair cut even shorter now that I've discovered I have a small, diamond-shaped face (with no rolls of fat to obscure it). I feel so light, in every sense of the word.

A more chilled at-home day today. We'll pop into our local farmers' market and shops for provisions and DH will slow-cook a lamb and apricot stew. I've had porridge for breakfast but have no idea what I fancy for lunch.

toffeesponge · 17/11/2013 11:40

Hello everyone Smile.

I am freezing. Just been and put another cardigan on so I have four layers on now plus my apron as I am cooking a roast dinner. We are on a serious economy drive so it is layers before heating though I am not sure DH realises how cold it gets at home in the day. Plus with about a stone off (2lbs on this week Sad) I have less fat keeping me warm. Even my feet are cold and I have socks and slippers on.

Hard week coming up so just trying to stay focussed and not let myself get overwhelmed.

Need to bake and cook lots for the kids but won't be tempted. Any ideas for things I can make and freeze for packed lunch would be good. I bake muffins a lot but not sure they would be nice after freezing?

Talkinpeace · 17/11/2013 12:28

What to do with Large clothes? : keep the jumpers, you'll need them to stay warm as you have less inner insulation
everything else goes to the charity shop the day it gets too big
as it will just get more and more too big as the days go by.
Possibly one "tent" to remind yourself how well you have done
but tight waistbands (no more elastic ladies) are definitely the fastest way to keep on track when you start maintaining.

bssh need picture of petite you Smile

postmanpatscat · 17/11/2013 13:59

I have to confess...blew up the router at home so in order to get my lesson planning done and update on MN I had to take refuge in McDs to take advantage of free wifi!! I did try M&S cafe and Costa first, but no seats in either. However, it's now 2pm and I have had nothing else to eat at all apart from my unhealthy lunch (veggie wrap, fries and hot choc).

Went to the gym last night and beat my PB...drum roll....10k in 58:30 Grin Can't remember the last time I did it in under an hour but I was definitely at least five years younger!

weetabix sounds to me like you're doing great and 5:2 is working well for you. As for larger clothes, get rid. I made a small fortune on Ebay with mine and used it to buy new or nearly new smaller clothes. It's not like I had a load of designer stuff either, it's all high street and sold well.

bssh you're an inspiration! You clearly had a great day yesterday and there's a lot of satisfaction in buying those smaller sizes...the well-earned smugness is leaping off my screen!

cupid enjoy your afternoon, bliss!

ducky well done on your run. It can be hard to fit in but you seem very motivated at the mo.

southeast you clearly have your priorities right! I have watched the video but I still eat sugar when I want it. I'm just better informed!

Right, off to post on inspiration thread. Will try to get pics up too.

Emmabryant123 · 17/11/2013 14:09

Talkinpeace · 17/11/2013 14:28

postmanpat you look FAB.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 17/11/2013 14:52

Just been reading the inspirational thread. Wow. All the photo's look fab.

I will be writing on there one day.

For now though my mini goal is to stop eating when Im ready tonight. I dont care how nice my meal will be as I will eat it again another day anyway. Its not like its going to be the last time I will get chance to eat the same food is it. therefore I dont need to stuff myself silly with it.

Tomorrow's goal is FD.

Thanks for that thread eatriskier

Breadandwine · 17/11/2013 14:57

postmanpat - WOW!

Breadandwine · 17/11/2013 15:01

Hi toffee!

Don't know how you are with breadmaking, but the sizzlers in this post are absolutely lovely for lunchboxes - as are the pizzas!

nobreadisanisland.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/on-tight-budget-make-your-own-bread.html

Especially if you can get the kids helping you to make them.

(Can't complain, then, can they? Grin)

And all breads freeze well.

BsshBossh · 17/11/2013 15:07

postman woohoo, you look fab!

toffeesponge · 17/11/2013 15:23

Thanks B&W. I can and do make bread but the muffins I meant at the cake ones. I do sweet and savoury ones. I am just going to make a list of things DS likes to eat and see what I can make from scratch. I bought some bread flour the other day and it was so cheap I wasn't even sure it really was more making bread with. I will see what happens when I try..

Not2bObvious · 17/11/2013 15:29

Wiw woo Postman (I hope you get the sentiment, not sure if my phonetics make sense !)
You're doing my shopping urge no good, seriously want a slinky jumper dress Envy
30 min run/20 mins kickboxing/10 mins weights - big greedy indulgent lunchGrin Love indulgent Sundays.
For the folks who we're saying they wanted/needed to start exercising? Just do it, find something you can do, DVD or walking or jogging - it's an investment in you and for you. You'll be happier/healthier and it'll help you in so many ways I'm not articulate enough to type! Honestly, I feel like a hundred bucks Wink Is it the exercise or the lunchtime wineConfused

xCupidStuntx · 17/11/2013 16:57

Oh wow postman you look amazing!!!

Had such an enjoyable day all to myself, just got home to discover I have the place to myself! Doubly wonderful! I saw the 5:2 recipe book while I was out, it actually looks pretty good. Has anybody got it? I think I'll get it again!
I've also, unintentionally, not eaten a single calorie (I drink black coffee) so I think I'll just have a nice 500cal dinner and call this a fast day. It would seem pointless to gorge for the sake of it.

ChocolatePudding · 17/11/2013 19:00

Mindful eating for me begins with actually counting how many biscuits I've eaten today instead of gorging blindly.

6 is a vast improvement. B&J limited by small volume remaining from Friday night.

Tues and Thur FD this week. NNN set to begin Tuesday.

Motivation spurred by Postman's wow photos! Can't remember the last time I allowed myself to be pictured in a bikini. Goal is to have photos taken Summer 2014 Grin.

CoffeeOne · 17/11/2013 19:23

Hello all, not had much chance to get on here this week! First week of this WOE done and feeling good. Going to weigh myself tomorrow. FD tomorrow too and actually looking forward to it! Off to catch up on the posts.

eatriskier · 17/11/2013 20:34

Hello everyone.

ppc wowee

Another Sunday of over indulgence here as was at my mum's for a roast. But they are always worth it. Shall hopefully fast the worst off tomorrow.

Finally we have Christmas decided and we're going to do our first little family one which is great for two reasons: firstly that I've been slightly wanting to just spend a Christmas not touring the South East visiting all and sundry and secondly that I have control so DH and I won't go too nuts. We've got a list of items we won't go near normally that we're planning on indulging on but it won't be a chocolate/crisp/fatty food fest. No nibbles either, nibbles tend to end up in the dustbins 3yo and 1yo.
