The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

TIP. Smile
DH is home. He is taking the DC tomorrow morning so I can have a lie in.

And I have now had plenty of wine. Aaaaahhh.

I've not had the talk with him yet. Saving that one for later b

MrsFlorrick · 15/11/2013 23:14

Oh and bigchocfrenzy.
I need to know about firming up my abs.

I've obviously been doing my Jillian Michaels workout. But I need more!!!

What are my best options for a nice result. And I'm not talking about sculpted abs here. Just firming my porridge like middle.

SirRaymondClench · 15/11/2013 23:18

Ok I started this this week. Am doing 3:4 (this week) I have about 2 stone ideally I would like to lose. I didn't find the fasting days too bad really although I've only done 2 so far this week. Doing my third of the week on Sunday.
I have lost 2lbs so far although I know that is water weight.
Can I ask what benefits other than weight loss you have found with this WAE?

BigChocFrenzy · 16/11/2013 00:28

For MrsF and any others interested in abs definition, you can increase / decrease these exercises according to your fitness level.

Plank:

  • 3 sets of 30 secs (or whatever you can) with brief breaks. Build up to 3 x 45 secs.

Front Crunches:

  • lie on your back, knees bent, so lower legs are at 90 degrees
  • crunch your upper body, preferably with hands stretched either side of legs.
  • hold position 3 secs, then lower your shoulders
  • try 3 sets of 8. Build up to 3x15

Lower Abs/Leg Raises

  • lie on your back, knees bent, so lower legs are at 90 degrees
  • lower and straighten your left leg (or as much as possible) until it is just above the floor, then bring it back up to the 90 degree position
  • repeat with right leg
  • try 3 sets of 5 each leg. Build up to 3x10

Side plank Crunches:

  • lie on your side with your lower arm supporting your upper body, elbow bent and forearm flat on the ground, legs on top of one another.
  • raise your hips off the ground so you are supported only by your elbow and your feet. If you can't manage this, keep the lower part of tour legs on the ground.
  • the other arm should be vertically in the air if you can, or across the front of your body, if not
  • lower your hips again to just above the ground. This raising and lowering completes 1 rep.
  • try 3 sets of 5 each side. Build up to 3x10

Abs swivel:
-Sit and raise legs, so thighs and upper torso form a V, while you balance on your bum

  • Hold a weight or ball (say 2kg to start) between both hands. Twist and bring the weight across your body to the left side, back to the middle, then to the right, while maintaining the V shape.
  • do this 5 times for a set. Do 3 sets. Build up to 3x10

Enjoy
Smile night all

BigChocFrenzy · 16/11/2013 00:31

Btw: apologies if I repeat anything that is in Jillian Michaels or Shred etc, as I haven't watched any fitness DVDs.

MrsFlorrick · 16/11/2013 00:58

Bigchocfrenzy. Flowers thanks.

Some of them are similar but not identical to JM.
I will have a go at your suggested ones.

It's predominantly my mid section which still looks fat. Rest of me is now fine. Annoying. Guess you cannot expect to carry two 10lbs babies and put on 6 stone twice over (not including baby plus water!) and have Miranda Kerrs tummy. Sigh.

Oh well big improvements have been made and I'm on the home stretch.

So much for H coming home and helping.... He is currently "helping" by snoring fast asleep whilst I am up with Chicken poxy DS who is oscillating between whining and wailing. Poor boy. Hope the calpol and piriton kicks on soon.

And as for H. I could cheerfully kick him hard where the sun don't shine.

Not2bObvious · 16/11/2013 06:48

Poor MrsF hope your little guy calmed down and got to sleep. Hopefully for your sake you didn't smother the big guy while he sleptWink Although you'd probable get away with it....not encouraging marital violence I promise! Only kidding.
Went for food last night and was faced with mammoth portion. Felt incredibly daunted, could only eat a fraction of it, was delighted thinking maybe my inner pig has been cured. But then I fell into the chocolates later. Oh well it was Friday, the day of excess for me. Felt v poorly last couple of days but have woken (stupidly early, 4.30am) feeling much better and planning a day of cleaning/exercise and general togetherness. Although will likely need an afternoon nap after early start. The kids are awake as well so it's going to be a lonnnnngggg day of bickering, joy oh joy.
Contemplating 16:8 as no hunger pangs yet and reckon I can distract myself til lunchtime. Need to get back on track as maintenance/aka not losing is frustrating me a bit. Need to be back to pre midterm lie of 11.2'ish, been 11.4'ish for about 3 weeks now and it's cause of lax behaviour! It must stopAngry

Not2bObvious · 16/11/2013 06:50

Pre midterm lie? Pre midterm low I mean, although it's been so long since I saw it, maybe it was a lie, b*stard scales, my nemisis....

toffeesponge · 16/11/2013 07:00

Morning all .

Can't sleep so gave up and got up. Head spinning with changes my children are about to embark on. Currently have my 8 year old snuggled into me and the cats are demanding I feed them.

ChocolatePudding · 16/11/2013 07:13

Morning. Mini FD for me today. Undo some of yesterday's damage.

ChocolatePudding · 16/11/2013 07:16

MrsF hope u enjoy ur lie in. No such luck for me Envy

BsshBossh · 16/11/2013 07:33

Went for food last night and was faced with mammoth portion. Felt incredibly daunted, could only eat a fraction of it, was delighted thinking maybe my inner pig has been cured. But then I fell into the chocolates later. Not2bObvious but remember, in the past you'd have demolished the massive portion and the chocs. So last night's eating was a big improvement.

Everyone, please don't feel guilty around food. There's alot of it on this thread. Many of you are still in the early days of fasting, you're still adjusting, in time you will physically be unable to overeat too much. Enjoy your food, knowing that eating is a balancing act: if you overeat one meal/day, you undereat the next meal/day. It really is as simple as that. No more Blushs now people.

Not2bObvious · 16/11/2013 07:44

Thanks Bssh you're so right. And today is my cut back day after yesterday's excess, slowly getting into my running gear for my first outside run in weeks. There's a good chance it will end up being a brisk walk or maybe I'll rebrand brisk walk to vvv slow jog Grin
I really am dragging myself out but I will get out that door by 8 to be back before 10 for first round of kids taxi. Anyone else remember Saturdays pre grown up life? I think I've blocked the memories for my remaining sanity

BetsyBell · 16/11/2013 08:05

I agree with bssh! No more Blush over what you've eaten please - enjoy it and adjust the next meal. Easy.

So 10 months of 5:2 and here's my attempt at being indulgent on a Friday (bearing in mind I'm currently not eating sugar/drinking booze Monday to Thursday): 1 tunnocks wafer bar, 1 slice of homemade flapjack after school. Then a meal out where I opted for salad because that's what I really fancied and no pudding because I didn't want one. Lashings of bubbly and a mountain of olives though!

I call that a lifestyle change victory.

duckyfuzz · 16/11/2013 08:14

Aaarrrrggghhh just lost a massive post Sad which is out of character for me! anyway to summarise
Mrsf glad dh is back and hope he keeps his promise this morning and that you get to chat later
Toffee great news about dd (and cake!)

WOE victory yesterday I think, knowing I'd overindulge last night I restricted calories through the day so came in at only a bit over TDEE despite managing nuts, wine and chocolate

Out to this later which will involve food and drink so will run at some point and eat as little as poss until then

I do keep up with everyone but am not a very chatty person, sorry if it seems like I'm not interested, I am!

Have a great day everyone, FD or NFD

duckyfuzz · 16/11/2013 08:15

Betsy great lifestyle change victory, I love it!

Bramblesinforrin · 16/11/2013 08:29

Popping in to wave! Phew. Nfd today, as I'm now maintaining and just doing fd once every ten days or so. Have kept the 20lb loss and size 10-12 from size 14-16. I've been to Rome (pizza, pasta, icecreams), had indulgent weekends etc etc without gaining. Amazing!

Biggest nsv this week at a course. Previously I've been offered chairs as people assumed I was pregnant! Too many comments in too many locations like this and I was trying to find a way of losing the bulk. This time, 3 people asked if I was a ballerina?! Strewth!

So keep going. It really does work. The initial loss took me 5 months and it has stayed off with the odd fd as maintainance. I'm looking forwards to getting into my nice Christmas party frocks instead of hiding in something skimming.

BetsyBell · 16/11/2013 08:30

Thanks Ducky - not remotely hungover either*! And brilliant for you too - adjusting eating earlier knowing you're planning treats later is an amazing victory. Your evening looks fun and a run too!

*well maybe a bit, certainly don't fancy rushing out for a run Wink

Velma8877 · 16/11/2013 08:42

Found my way back to the thread after dropping in back in #25 or so. Good to see everyone is still enjoying the WOE.

After 4 months of bouncing from around 10st11 and 10st12 I have dropped to 10st9. I'm really hoping that that's the end of the dreaded plateau.
10st 11lbs is the weight I've been for the majority of the last 10 years...usually where my weight stabilises and plateaus and eventually I give up any calorie controlled plan. Because the deprivation just gets to much.
But 9 months into this WOL I know I can just keep trucking on happily.

As well as my scales victory today, a couple of NSV too. A bag of my fav chocs was purchased a few days ago...and not finished until last evening. And one of my favourite meals was served up to me too, and I was happy with a third of what I would have forced in a year ago. Leftovers for lunch!

And thanks to TIP, that no snacking advice is invaluable. I'm now out of the habit and during the week rarely ever snack... unless I'm proper physically hungry...healthier snack of some cashew nuts or an apple rather than deciding that Burger King is a good idea for a late lunch when I go past on my way home. Greasy fast food lunch now leaves me feeling rubbish for the rest of the day.

Velma8877 · 16/11/2013 08:53

I must visit the thread more often, I think my household is sick of me banging on about how amazing 5:2 is all day, every day. Except for those long FD evenings spent describing the imaginary 5 course breakfast I'm going to have "tomorrow".

Just so brilliant to have had a year of enjoying life and I'm even looking at the long plateau as a positive. It's certainly nicer to near the end of the year not having steadily, slowly and seeming inevitably gaining weight.

BsshBossh · 16/11/2013 09:15

Some great LCVs and NSVs going on. Big Thanks and hurrahs to everyone! Brambles, velma welcome back.

Of into town for a lovely day out with DH. Meat Market burgers planned for lunch so we're both skipping breakfast to make room for them. Shopping for size small woolies is on the cards for me too :) Have a good weekend all.

BsshBossh · 16/11/2013 09:16

*Off

duckyfuzz · 16/11/2013 09:17

Hmm I have just been for a run and now feel I may explode from within, maybe too much wine last night... Still it's done now Grin

Not2bObvious · 16/11/2013 09:45

Well done Ducky on the run, just back from my run/jog/walk early morning shopping. Thrilled with myself, according to mfp 545 cals! Bit too high to be true but still money in the bank for munchies laterGrin. It was an amazingly easy/enjoyable run, v pleased with myself

duckyfuzz · 16/11/2013 10:04

Not2be that's loads more than me Envy we are similar weight I think! my all time low was 11st2 three years ago (for my 40th) but has crept up to hover around 11st7 for the last couple of years, above that at times. I'd love it to start with a 10 by Christmas! I'm currently 11st3.5.
